Zanjutsu (斬術, "Slaying Technique"; also translated as "Art of the Sword") is the swordsmanship practiced primarily by the Shinigami.[1] It is classified as one of the Shinigami's four basic forms of combat. While it is unclear when exactly the use and application of weaponry first came about in the Soul Society, the system of Zanjutsu was said to have been brought about by the introduction of the Zanpakutō.

History[]

Overview[]

The very basis of Zanjutsu is the idea of forging a connection. While rudimentary swordsmanship could be better explained through the core of martial arts, Zanjutsu's teachings began with the concept of the Zanpakutō. The Shinigami must establish a dialogue and eventual relationship with their Zanpakutō in order to increase their skills and become stronger as a result. This principle can be further expressed through battle as well. Connections are not limited solely to the master and their sword, but also between the swordsman and their surroundings, their opponents, or even their allies. Degree of proficiency in Zanjutsu is determined by how well the relationship between Shinigami and Zanpakutō are, but also to the extent of how fluidly and easily the swordsman can forge connections with external sources and targets in battle.
