Yōkai Shihōin (四楓院妖怪, Shihōin Yōkai) is a male Shinigami, born and raised in the infamous household of the Shihōin family. He's the child of two pure-blooded Shinigami, who clenched an honorable position in the family. Yōkai's lineage was nothing less that nobility and royalty as he was related to legendary shinigami, amongst them is his father. He was nourished in the Shihōin household. Yōkai's childhood was filled with hardship and conflicts between him and his parents as he was split between his mother who was a kind, compassionate woman who cherished her child and cared only for his safety, and his father who was an elitist to say the least. He wanted his child to become a captain in the Gotei 13. Thus, he adopted harsh methods of tutoring him in order to qualify the young Shinigami to raise to the position of captain. He was taught to obey the rules at all costs and to become a heartless beast who lives only to see the blood of his foes dripping from his zanpakutō. Eventually, his father was able to dilute any sense of ambition or desire and replace them with what he craved, which was for his child to ascend to the rank of captain, using excuses as "honoring the Shihōin" in order to justify his rough treatment.
At a relatively young age, Yōkai joined the Shinō Academy, an educational institution in order to prepare full-fledged Shinigami, who are capable of carrying out their duties within the soul society and the human world. Unlike the rest of his clansmen, Yōkai failed to excel in Hakuda, the art of hand-to-hand combat, which was apparently the specialty of most of his clansmen. However, Yōkai shined in the art of Zanjutsu (斬術, Swordsmanship; Viz "Art of the Sword"; Cutting Technique). The man was unbeatable with the blade in his grip. He easily overcame all of his classmates when it came to using the blade. It seemed as if his sword was an extension of himself, a body part, which he used just as he would use his limbs in Hakuda. He also shined in the art of Hohō, which involved fast movement and agility as he managed to grasp Shunpo within a couple of days.
Yōkai's notable skill in most fields of combat made graduating the academy an easy task for him. He joined the Gotei 13 at a relatively young age. He was adopted by the first division, which was considered to be the most powerful divisions of them all. A division that only model shinigami entered. Yōkai became the fourth seat officer of the division in a short period of time. He was considered to be a genius from the Shihōin clan. He was infamous for his Zanjutsu and Hohō, feared by his foes, respected and admired by his allies in the soul society.
