History[]
It is said that the Soul King was born in response to the chaos wrought onto the Old World by the first Menos. The world seems to intervene as a countermeasure whenever a great danger threatens it. As such, the same was said when the members of the Royal Guard felt the will of the Soul King within their bones which served as Ōken. That a great evil with the power to slay the Soul King was rising and so a successor, a replacement who could continue to maintain the balance of souls if such an event were to pass, was needed. Under Ichibē Hyōsube's instruction, they retrieved Tsuyuri Kawahiru from the lower world. She was the last known member of the prestigious Sōzōshin, beings with powers that closely approached that of the Soul King, and it was thought that someone of that lineage could be used to conceive children via the power of the Soul King that could serve as his replacement to preserve the stability of the three worlds.
However, something unexpected happened. Not one, but two children, were born of this ritual. Kamui Kawahiru, who inherited the power of the Sōzōshin and the Soul King, and Seireitou Kawahiru, who inherited nothing. It was only after the fact that they realized Tsuyuri was not a full-blooded Sōzōshin but rather a half-breed born of a Sōzōshin father and a Kitsune mother. While Kamui inherited only the Sōzōshin blood of his mother, Seireitou inherited both Sōzōshin and Kitsune blood, two conflicting lineage factors which negated one another due to their contradictory relationship. All they required was a child with the power of the Soul King, and so Kamui sufficed, while they intended to kill both Seireitou and Tsuyuri. After executing the mother, who pleaded that at least Seireitou be spared, Ichibē prepared himself to do the same with the silver-haired child, but something prevented him from doing so. It was difficult to say what it was, but Ichibē described an instinctive inability to execute the child, something which he said felt comparable to the warning of the great evil that he received from the Soul King. As such, he believed that this too had to be the will of the Soul King, and so rather than kill Seireitou, he ordered that the child be cast to the outskirts of Rukongai where his fate would be left undetermined.
