The Tres Pilares (三中枢 (トレス・ピレーレズ), Toresu Pireresu; Spanish for "Three Pillars", Japanese for "Three Backbones") are a triumvirate of powerful Arrancar who jointly rule Hueco Mundo in the aftermath of the war with the Wandenreich. Its members consist of Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, the former Sexta, Tier Harribel, the former Tres, and Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck, who was also the former Tres, from Sōsuke Aizen's Espada. In an effort to avoid further bloodshed in the wake of the Blood War, and maintain peace, they upheld a verbal treaty with the remnants of the Wandenreich not to interfere with them as they settled in Hueco Mundo.

History[]

In the immediate aftermath of the Winter War, Harribel returned to Hueco Mundo alongside the Tres Bestias, overlooking the damage.[1] Her Fracción suggested Harribel herself rule Hueco Mundo to stave off the return of chaos, and although she claimed a fake sun could not bring light to the darkness of Hueco Mundo, and all which is truly needed is the silent darkness, she nevertheless set off towards Las Noches.[2] This marked Harribel's tenure as Queen of Hueco Mundo, until her defeat by Yhwach and subsequent capture.[3]

Following the rescue of Harribel by Grimmjow and Nel, the trio returned to Hueco Mundo.[4] Together with Nel, Harribel gradually began to return peace to Hueco Mundo.[5] Grimmjow, meanwhile, had grown strong enough in the intervening years that even Harribel was hesitant to fight him.[6] Ikomikidomoe, however, ridiculed the very notion of an Arrancar as young as Grimmjow ruling Hueco Mundo.[7] Despite the ancient Hollows words, the trio came to be known by the Tres Pilares in the years that followed.[8]

The formative years of the Tres Pilares were closely entwined with the activities of the Wandenreich remnants. Nel and Harribel sued for peaceful coexistence, and were largely successful in their pursuit, but tensions remained high, and Grimmjow often fought with the surviving Quincy and even other Arrancar. Averian, and to a lesser extent Gundinger Dreliarn,[9] was largely responsible for stoking the hostility between both factions,[10] a fact supported by Muto.[11] Furthermore, Averian found it ridiculous that the trio ruled jointly, describing them as "the self-styled rulers of Hueco Mundo".[12]

Furthermore, the trio managed to galvanize most of Hueco Mundo's Hollow and Arrancar population under their leadership. Rudbornn Chelute, with Loly Aivirrne and Menoly Mallia amongst his Exequias, contributed bodies to their standing army. This was further bolstered by the child-like Picaro, with the aforementioned standing as main opposition against the Soldat of the Wandereich remnants.[13]

Group dynamics[]

Although powerful individually, the dynamics of the group are fairly straightforward. Harribel and Nelliel are often of one mind, and the two together are able to curb many of Grimmjow's more reckless pursuits, often resulting in a disciplining Bala courtesy of Nelliel.[14] When threatened, however, the three don't hesitate to move as one, as was the case when they moved to intercept Averian.[11] This joint approach to ruling was considered strange by Averian, who had attempted to rule Hueco Mundo himself in the past, but lost to Baraggan Louisenbairn.[15]

Author's notes[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Tres Pilares were originally set to appear in the site's Fanon Canon project, with fanon characters assuming the roles. In Bleach: War for the King's Seal, Grimmjow, Harribel, and Nelliel were retained, as extended material featured the trio together. At first, they served as background characters and plot devices, specifically in the journals of Akira and Ashido. Their first proper appearance was during Hunger and Greed: Predation, with Averian fleeing the moment they mobilized against him. This was followed up in Hunger and Greed: Rallying Ants, where they were shown interacting with Gundinger Dreliarn.
  • As far as the author is concerned, Grimmjow (6) is levelled out by Harribel (3) and Nelliel (3), and this mindset is considered whenever the trio appear in-story together. Furthermore, the relationship between Grimmjow and Nelliel is largely inspired by the relationship between Nnoitra and Nelliel albeit less confrontational on Grimmjow's part and slightly more forceful on Nelliel's part. Harribel's approach, meanwhile, mirrors the spectator role she took during Grimmjow's battle with Ichigo, though she sides more with Nelliel. As such, the two together act as a check on Grimmjow's impulsiveness.
