The Thirteenth Division (十三番隊, Jūsanbantai), is one of the branches of the Gotei 13, currently headed by Captain Seia Tulia Honoria.
Organization[]
The 13th Division operated in a peculiar manner under its previous Captain, Jūshirō Ukitake. Due to his ailing health, he was forced to hand off most of the administrative duties to his suborindates, the 3rd Seat pair Kiyone Kotetsu and Sentarō Kotsubaki, as no one had been willing to take the place of Lieutenant Kaien Shiba after his death. Since the promotion of Rukia Kuchiki, the division had begun to return to the standard means of operations, a process completed under its new Captain, Seia Tulia Honoria, who has the distinguishing trait of also having been the original Captain of the 13th.
Special Duties[]
Though all Shinigami are able to be assigned a place to protect within the Human World, the responsibility of oversight, and thus assignment, is handled by the Thirteenth Division. Its members are tasked with ensuring that each district, as labelled by the Gotei 13, is protected by a Shinigami. To do so they assess a given area and the skills of a particular Shinigami so that they will be able to complete their duties successfully without simply tossing prospective members to feed Hollows. In this capacity they work together with the Twelfth Division who are responsible for the instruments that allow the Gotei to observe the Human World and its goings-on. They are also responsible for the Shōkin Office (賞金玄関, Lit. Bounty Hall) which assigns and deals with the bounty rewards placed on each known Hollow based on the danger they present.
Barracks[]
Like all the other barracks, the 13th Division Barracks house the offices and living quarters of the Shinigami of the 13th. The Barrack grounds contains the Ugendō (雨乾堂, Rain Dried Hall) Quarters, which was set aside for use by Jūshirō Ukitake, the former captain of the 13th Division. It has since been converted into a memorial hall for those Shinigami lost during the Thousand Year Blood War. The pond around the Ugendō Quarters was once filled with koi fish stolen from the Kuchiki Manor which have been replaced with kumonryū koi which change colouration with the passing of seasons.
