Tarō Kinzoku (金属太郎, Metal Eldest Son) is a Shinigami and the Captain of the Third Division. His Lieutenant is Kana Enodoriko.

Appearance[]

Kinzoku is a tall, muscular man physically in his early 40s. He has short blond hair and deep green eyes. His squarish face possesses very sharp features and is always stiff with a grim expression. Usually, his gaze is focussed and unrelenting. He bears severe burn scars on his left arm, the result of his encounter with Tōru Yōshanai.

He wears a completely standard Shihakushō with the Captain's haori on it.

Personality[]

Tarō is a man of few words^[1]^[2]. Normally silent and brooding, most of the time he merely answers other people rather than engaging into conversations himself. Consequently, he is rather difficult to interact with^[3].

Moreover, he is renowned for his unyielding determination and extreme ruthlessness. Whenever he enters a battlefield, he does so with no fear whatsoever. He advances tirelessly, mercilessly cutting down all of his enemies until no one remains^[1]. These traits and his feats during multiple battles have earned him the moniker "the Juggernaut".

History[]

Kinzoku had known Takeo Danko even before they joined the Gotei 13. They were accepted to the same class in the Shinō Academy approximately 500 years ago. For a time, they used to serve in the same Division after their graduation.

Over 300 years ago, Tarō was the Lieutenant of the Third Division. He participated in a bloody war, and due to his relentlessness and valiance managed to accomplish the mission his late Captain had not been capable of completing. To reward him for that, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto personally appointed Kinzoku the new Captain of the Third Division.

More or less 150 years ago, Tarō began regular swordsmanship trainings with the Eleventh Division Captain, Kenpachi Kūfuku^[4].

Zankensoki Skills

Master Swordsman: Due to his focus on melee combat and the special abilities of his Zanpakutō, Kinzoku has trained Zanjutsu extensively. Eventually, he has become a true master-level sword-fighter, and only the likes of the Captain-Commander and the Kenpachi are more adept specialists in this regard. He is almost unparalleled in terms of offence and has excellent defences as well. His preferred fighting style involves a so-called "sword dance", where he overwhelms the enemy with fierce and incessant strikes of multiple blades slashing from constantly changing directions^[5]^[6].

Senmaioroshi (千枚卸, "Thousand-Page Wholesale"): Kinzoku cuts the enemy to ribbons with multiple slashes taking place within a split second^[7].
Agitowari (顎割, "Chin/Jaw Splitting"): A swift cut which bifurcates the opponent horizontally^[7].
Suikawari (西瓜割, "Watermelon Splitting"): An overhead slash which cleanly and precisely cleaves the opponent in twain^[6].
Ryōdan (両断, "Bisection"): Simple, yet very powerful kendō technique, which unleashes a potent, sharp wave of energy with an abrupt downward swing of the sword^[4].

Hakuda Expert: Whilst seldom used, he has undeniable skill in unarmed combat as well. Whereas his fighting style is rough and focused on brute force rather than finesse, it is quite effective thanks to his increased strength.

Shunpo Expert: Tarō is proficient in the use of Shunpo, and is able to keep up with most Captains in terms of speed.

Natural Abilities

Immense Strength: Tarō is also characterised by his incredible physical strength. He utilises it to overpower his opponents with devastating, broad strikes of his Zanpakutō^[5]^[7].

Immense Durability: He is astonishingly tough, and can take fairly powerful attacks with little damage. His Bankai further increases his survivability^[4].

Enhanced Endurance: Furthermore, Kinzoku is capable of fighting for extended periods of time without signs of fatigue. Some people like to say that after numerous difficult battles, he was often the only one left standing.

Immense Spiritual Power: He possesses an enormous amount of spiritual energy, far more than sufficient to be a Captain of the Gotei 13. He uses it effectively to bolster his swordsmanship skills. Being light blue in colour, his Reiatsu feels "sharp" to others when intensely exerted^[5].

Zanpakutō

Hyakubaiken (百倍剣, "Hundredfold Sword"): Whilst sealed it is a nodachi with a square tsuba and a dark grey hilt.

Shikai: Its release command is "Cleave" (れる, "Wareru"). Tarō slashes diagonally with a two-handed grip. Upon activation the Zanpakutō splits into two swords identical to its sealed form.
- Hataken (畑剣, "Sword Field"): Kinzoku crosses the swords and impales the ground with them. Subsequently, dozens of several-metres long blades rapidly raise from below the opponent and pierce them instantaneously^[1].
- Rendaken (連打剣, "Sword Barrage"): This technique consists of Tarō scraping the blades of his swords against each other. Subsequently, several sharp wedges are shot toward the enemy with considerable speed.
- Hijiken (肘剣, "Elbow Sword"): Kinzoku sprouts two additional blades from his elbows in order to increase his offence and overwhelm the opponent with fast, unpredictable slashes^[3]^[7].
Bankai: Hitori Guntai Senbaiken (一人軍隊千倍剣, "One-Man Army Thousandfold Sword"): The twin nodachi shine brightly and widen, changing their form into triangular broadswords fused with Kinzoku's hands. Metal coating covers his arms and two shield-like armour plates appear on his shoulders.
- Enhanced Strength: Previously unable to overcome Tinieblas's strong Hierro, in his Bankai Tarō pierces it easily, nearly cutting off her forearm in the process^[7].
- Enhanced Shikai Abilities: Tarō may access and utilise empowered Shikai techniques when using Bankai^[6].
- Shūdan Kushizashi no Kei (集団串刺しの刑, "Mass Impalement"): Generally an improved version of Hataken, the technique summons numerous thick spikes of sharp steel which erupt from the ground and pierce anything on its surface. The technique is fast, and the stakes vanish soon after it takes place^[7].
