Takeo Masanori (正 剛雄, Takeo Masanori), is the former Captain of the 12th Division in the Gotei 13 and 2nd President of the Shinigami Research Institute. He is now the leader of Hueco Mondo and Overlord of the Arrancar Faction.

From a young age, Takeo was known to be an extremely potent Shinigami. He graduated rather quickly through the academy, and was immediately instated in the 12th Division, in replacement of the recently deceased 7th Seat. Only a year into service and he was already the Lieutenant under Ryo Satoru, and Vice-President of the Shinigami Research Institute under Masa Manabu. He was recognized as a genius and a prodigy, and assisted Masa in many revolutionary projects.

One thing Takeo disliked was the slaughter of Hollows. He viewed them as, in essence, Human, robbed of all free will and forced to kill and destroy, thus making them innocent. Though aware of the cleansing process Zanpakuto brought on in Hollows, Takeo began researching into methods of perhaps purifying Hollows without needing to make them suffer. He secretly began using the almost boundless resources of the Research Institute to fuel his studies. Being the great intellect he was, he eventually came up with the Hogyoku, which was initially intended to transform a Hollow into a regular Soul, harnessing their Reiryoku and carrying it over to the second form in the shape of a Zanpakuto, perhaps creating powerful Shinigami in the process. Takeo began testing on captured Hollows for the Research Institute, once again doing so illegally and without consent.

The process, however, went horribly awry when the Hollow was not completely transformed, and though part of the Soul was indeed sealed inside a Zanpakuto of sorts, the Hollow, dubbed Tazer by the Research Institute, retained its Hollow instincts and hatred of Shinigami. It unleashed havoc on the facility, killing several Shinigami before any real force had been mobilized against it. Before it was inevitably slaughtered, it appeared to shatter it's crude Zanpakuto and gain a little more of it's original form, becoming stronger in the process. At this point, only a 3rd Seat could bring the abomination down.

The Gotei 13 put the presence of Takeo, his residual spiritual energy inside the defeated creature, his compassion for Hollows and a few other small facts together. He was obviously the culprit. Though indirect, his experiments had resulted in the slaughter of fellow Shinigami, and was to be stripped of his position and cast out of the Seireitei. But the Gotei 13 had underestimated his determination; not really believing his actions to be those of malevolence, they placed him in a low-security cell. Before the orders could be carried out, Takeo broke out of his prison, knowing full well what his fate was to be, recaptured his prized Hõgyoku, and used a portion of it's power to create a Garganta, which allowed him to travel directly to Hueco Mondo.
