- "Damn, you're tough! Most people would've been reduced to ash by an attack like that. All you get are burns! But I'll take the side-effect instead.
I told you already that we're dealing with a real monster here. I stopped applying "sense" to this guy some time ago. Wait... What's he doing now!?
Ransōtengai...! Looks like paralysis won't cut it either. I have to admit, this guy's starting to annoy me.
You stole my line!" - —Kenji and Hitsugaya during their battle with Gerard Valkyrie.[src]

Tōshirō Hitsugaya (日番谷 冬獅郎, Hitsugaya Tōshirō), who is known occasionally as Shiro (白, White) and Toshie (俊江), is a Shinigami, as well as the embodiment of a heavenly guardian that would be reincarnated every few centuries. His Zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru, has a twin, who is wielded by Sōjirō Kusaka.
Hitsugaya had a long and distinguished Shinigami career. He served two separate times as the 10th Division Captain in the Gotei 13 and later as a Captain in the Gotei Remnant, though he defected from the latter organization following its alliance with the Imawashī criminal organization. Inbetween his Captaincy stints in the 10th Division Hitsugaya was also affiliated with Kenji Hiroshi and the organization the latter created, where he worked in tandem with the Ryū Guard and the Visored.
He was a central combatant in not only the Winter War and Quincy Blood War that followed, but the First Spiritual War as well. He fought alongside Kenji Hiroshi and the Ryū Order in the latter conflict as one of three liaisons from the Gotei 13, and partnered Amagai and Hiyori Sarugaki frequently, often on the front lines where the fighting was thickest. He was also the only person sans Van Satonaka who was aware of Kenji's plan to fake his own death near the war's conclusion so that he could later take Averian by surprise.
Sometime following the Collapse, Hitsugaya joined Kentaro Hiroshi to help bring security to the Reikai, becoming a Commander in the Six Directions, after defecting from the Gotei Remnant. His presence within the organization convinced Hiyori to lend her talents to the cause as well, though she would never admit to it. He has since vowed to destroy not only the Imawashī and the Kikkashō, but Averian and his Espada as well. He is one of a very select number of people who is constantly aware of Kenji Hiroshi's actions due to their shared use of a linked Renkei. He is thus a member of the reformed Ryū Guard.
Appearance[]
Hitsugaya is short and lean with spiked white-coloured hair and turquoise eyes, both of which tend to make him stand out regardless of his locale.[1][2] In many respects he is the polar opposite of Sōjirō Kusaka; Sōjirō was tall and much more muscled, with Hitsugaya being the more lean-built of the pair.[3] As a child in Rukongai he wore a lime-green kimono with a vine-like pattern on the sleeves as daily-wear, and changed into a white-coloured kimono before he slept.[4] Prior to his Captaincy his spiked hair-style was not as prominent and he wore the standard uniform of the Shinigami, with the 10th Division's insignia on his left breast.[5] As a Captain his uniform was largely unchanged from his days as a Seated Officer, though he donned the Captain's white haori with a green-coloured sash around his shoulders, held together by a round, star-like clip, which he uses to secure his Zanpakutō to his back.[6]
Hitsugaya momentarily donned a tattered poncho during his investigation into the matter surrounding Sōjirō Kusaka and the Ōin, which was a gift from Kenji Hiroshi. He soon replaced the garment with his Captain's haori upon clearing his name. After the defeat of Sōsuke Aizen he became slightly taller, his hair grew slightly, and he added a long turquoise-coloured scarf to his attire.[7][8] He also replaced his old green sash with a thin chain, but retained the star-like clip.[9] During the Quincy Blood War, which saw Hitsugaya momentarily fall under the control of the Quincy Giselle Gewelle, he wore a long white-coloured double-breasted trench coat sporting black lapels. The only constant retained from his prior attire was the thin chain holding his Zanpakutō's sheath.[10]
During the initial stages of the war with Averian he retained his Captain's haori despite no longer being affiliated with the Gotei 13, a trait he shared with Amagai.[11] Following his return to the Gotei 13 at the request of Madoka Mizuki he had experienced a growth-spurt in the sixteen-year time-skip between Part II and III. He is broader through the shoulders but retains his lean build, and is about half-a-head shorter than Amagai.[12] Following the Collapse Hitsugaya adopted a new outfit. He now dons a pair of light blue fingerless gloves, a thin white shitagi underneath his haori, with Hyōrinmaru sheathed on his back in an over-the-shoulder style.[13] In addition he has matured greatly, with the appearance of a young adult, and is no longer required to "mature" himself to activate his complete Bankai form. The transition from his standard Bankai form to his complete Bankai form is marked simply by the dissolving of his ice-wings, with said ice forming around his shoulders, forearms, and knees. During the second Wandenreich Invasion Renji Abarai mistakenly believed that Hitsugaya had an older brother, and that it was him who was fighting Gerard. Rather than correct him Hitsugaya reluctantly went along with it to avoid an explanation.
Personality[]
- "That's Captain Hitsugaya to you."
- —Hitsugaya to Captain-Commander Madoka Mizuki upon the latter calling him "Toshi".[src]
Hitsugaya is a complex young man whose maturity and seriousness is far and away more developed than some fully grown adults, and he always does his duty; even should he be pitted against old comrades.[13][14] He dislikes his subordinates or allies goofing off in his presence, detests loud people who bring unnecessary attention to themselves and others, and has absolutely no time for jokers.[1] He also detests being referred to or treated like a child, especially when someone questions his rank or ability because of his apparent youth.[12] Jūshirō Ukitake often forced an assortment of sweets and candy upon Hitsugaya, who was often left wondering in humorous irritation why these things always happened to him.[15][16] As he grew these occurrences thankfully became less occurring, but he was always swift to admonish anyone who belittled his rank or referred to him with anything other than his full title. Even Captain-Commander Madoka Mizuki fell victim to his verbal reprisal when she referred to him by the name "Toshie", telling her "That's Captain Hitsugaya to you."[12] On the flip-side he was not above pointing out someone's age, for he once referred to the old Gotei 13 as a bunch of old men who never stopped moaning when he admonished Riki Nagakura and Hikaru for the same.[17]
During his time in Rukongai, Hitsugaya had a reputation as a cold individual; his next door neighbours where scared of him even though Hitsugaya did nothing negative to them.[18] The only people who treated him well where his grandmother and Momo.[19] This caused Hitsugaya some degree of loneliness though he would never admit to it, though those who where close too him saw through his guise. This was alleviated somewhat when he met and befriended Sōjirō Kusaka, though the negative outcome of that friendship eventually contributed to his coldness.[3] Despite this Hitsugaya and Sōjirō retained some semblance of a bond; to the point Hitsugaya was the sole thing Sōjirō recognised when his mind was splintered by Averian.[20] Kenji manipulated Hitsugaya into forming a friendship with Hiyori Sarugaki following the Winter War to help them both escape their loneliness, which Rangiku would point out to Kenji. Kenji claimed he thought they'd get along, nothing more and nothing less, and he was right.[21] Hiyori and he bickered like an old married couple; when she yelled at him he yelled right back, but the bond they shared couldn't be denied. Kenji even taunted them regarding their mutual crush for one another; Hiyori stuttered in response, whilst Hitsugaya blushed crimson.[22] In the years after their meeting Hitsugaya and Hiyori's relationship continued to develop and deepen; Hitsugaya was notably willing to take time off to visit her in the World of the Living, and the ease they had in one another's company was clearly evident.[23]
Hitsugaya prides himself on his preparedness; he see's a number of potential strategies at once, and has the experience to best utilize his skills, as well as team-up with his allies.[17] His natural genius, coupled with his work ethic, has driven him to push his own limits on a number of occasions; first it was to meet the challenge of Aizen's Arrancar,[24] then it was protect Momo from further suffering and heartache,[25] and after that it was to find ways to utilize Hyōrinmaru more effectively when his Bankai was temporarily stolen.[26] In this way he decided to better his skills as a swordsman and studied under Kenji and Kusaka. His dedication to self-improvement, not to mention his prodigious abilities, meant that a number of individuals have remarked upon his potential;[27] though he has always retained a measure of modesty, for he claimed that Kenji was every bit the prodigy that he was.[28] His abilities progressed to the point that, following the death of Shunsui Kyōraku, he was offered the position of Captain-Commander, but ultimately turned it down to return as the Captain of the 10th Division.[29] His desire to improve in order to protect those close to him meant that, post-Collapse, there where very few individuals capable of standing against him on even-footing, and Hitsugaya knew it.[13][14]
History[]
Early childhood[]
Hitsugaya lived in Junrinan, which was the 1st District of West Rukongai, along with his grandmother and childhood friend Momo Hinamori.[30] Despite his youth and lack of training Hitsugaya was capable of hearing the call of his Zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru, in his dreams. He put this down to a recurring dream and told no one.[31] Momo eventually leaves to join the Shinō Academy and her visits become increasingly less as the years go on.[32] Later, Hitsugaya meets Rangiku Matsumoto in the marketplace, who is a Shinigami, and he is knocked down by bumping into her bosom. Rangiku tells him to stand up like a man though Hitsugaya runs from her.[33] Hitsugaya has another dream which is decidedly more vivid than any that preceded it. A large, scaly, serpentine dragon appears to him in his dreams and attempts to divulge its name, but its voice is muffled by strong winds. Hitsugaya wakes in a cold sweat with Rangiku in his home. She tells him to stop leaking reiatsu all over. Hitsugaya notices that the room is very cold and that the cold has been affecting his grandmother.[34] Rangiku tells him to become a Shinigami so that he can learn to control his power, for he is strong, remarking that he may end up killing his grandmother otherwise.[35] Hitsugaya tells his grandmother he intends to become a Shinigami and leaves with her blessing.[36] Hitsugaya's prodigious talents ensured that he entered the Shinō Academy on his first attempt and enabled him to graduate within a year. He made friends with Sōjirō Kusaka, a fellow student, and the two manifested the same Zanapkutō. Per the ancient law of Soul Society the two where required to fight for the right to wield Hyōrinmaru; Hitsugaya disagreed with their ruling, but fought-back in self-defence when Sōjirō attacked him. Hitsugaya was deemed worthy and Sōjirō was cut down by the Onmitsukidō to the shock and sadness of Hitsugaya.[3] |
Early career[]
Hitsugaya joined the 10th Division in the Gotei 13, eventually working his way up to become the 3rd Seat under Captain Isshin Shiba.[37] He was already undergoing specialized training to achieve his Bankai at this time, telling Matsumoto that his training was nearing completion and that is was only a matter of time.[38] Following an incident in Naruki City, which Isshin investigated, Hitsugaya noted to Matsumoto that they weren't strong enough to assist him.[39] He was subsequently present when Isshin once again returned to the World of the Living, bearing witness to Rangiku's rage.[40] Matsumoto continued on as Lieutenant, with Hitsugaya doing most of the paperwork. Not long after Isshin's departure, Hitsugaya successfully concluded his training and achieved his Bankai. He became the youngest Shinigami to ever achieve the rank of Captain, replacing Isshin in the role of 10th Division Captain.[41] Shortly after his ascension to Captaincy and achievement of Bankai, Hitsugaya independently pursued information pertaining to the incident involving himself and Sōjirō. Entering his inner world he quizzed his Zanpakutō Spirit, Hyōrinmaru, regarding how he and Sōjirō could wield the same Zanpakutō. Hyōrinmaru revealed that he and Sōjirō's Hyōrinmaru where linked just as Hitsugaya and Sōjirō where linked, leading Hitsugaya to ask what he means. Hyōrinmaru states that it is possible that Sōjirō is not dead, because he can sense his "twin", though Hitsugaya claims that this is not possible.[42] |
Ryōka Invasion[]
During an emergency Captain's meeting regarding the execution of Rukia Kuchiki, Hitsugaya notes his fellow Captain's are bickering like old men, calling their arguments pointless.[43][44] In another meeting held following the apparent murder of Captain Sōsuke Aizen, Hitsugaya begins to suspect fellow Captain Gin Ichimaru of foul play, and informs Momo of this. She subsequently attacks Gin, only to be intercepted by Izuru Kira, and Hitsugaya has both locked up.[45][46] He then asks Gin whether he was intending to kill Momo, which Gin denies, though Hitsugaya threatens Gin's life should a drop of Momo's blood be shed on Gin's account.[47] After Gin frees Izuru from his cell Hitsugaya confronts them, but is interrupted by Momo, who has been manipulated into thinking Hitsugaya is responsible for the murder of Aizen. She grips her sword so tightly her hands bleed, leading Hitsugaya to act on his earlier threat and engage Gin. He suggests Izuru leave otherwise he will be caught in their battle, claiming a twelve-kilometre gap should suffice. Hitsugaya manages to corner Gin, leading the latter to attempt to stab Momo as a distraction, though Matsumoto intercepts the blow. She tells Gin to withdraw or he will have to fight her as well. Gin withdraws from the scene.[48] Believing Gin to be responsible for recent events Hitsugaya resolves to stop Rukia's execution by appealing directly to the Central 46.[49] Hitsugaya proceeds to the Central Underground Assembly Hall and finds the entire Central 46 lying dead. He theorizes they have been dead for at least two days and realizes that the seals protecting the area where undisturbed. He comes to the conclusion that the judges where killed before they where sealed in and that every order given down by them have been fake. They are interrupted by Izuru who flees the scene. They give chase but Izuru reveals that Momo followed them, having escaped from her cell. Hitsugaya leaves Matsumoto to take care of Izuru while he returns to the Central 46 Chambers.[50] Hitsugaya finds not only Gin but Aizen too, alive and well. Confused, Hitsugaya wonders why they are together, and asks why they referred to the Gotei 13 as the enemy. He discovers Momo in a critical state. He asks how long Aizen and Gin have been working together, with Aizen revealing they have been comrades since the start. Aizen claims that "admiration is the furthest thing from understanding", referring to Momo. He resolves to kill the pair and releases his Bankai. However, due to an illusion, Hitsugaya is cut down.[51] Captain Retsu Unohana arrives who performs emergency surgery on him and Momo.[52] |
Haunted by the Past[]
Hitsugaya, alongside Matsumoto and the 10th Division, are chosen to guard the Ōin as it is being transported to its new location. He complains that there is always some fanfare when the Royal Family is concerned, leading Matsumoto to remind him to be careful with what he says. The pair then sense something amiss as a ball of electricity smashes into one of the carriages, and a number of fires erupt all around them. Hitsugaya orders Matsumoto to rally the 10th Division as he flash-steps away. The attackers, revealing themselves to be Arrancar, attack again. The fire-wielding Arrancar is intercepted by Hitsugaya who nearly freezes her sword, though she evades him.[53] Hitsugaya is then stabbed in the stomach by a masked individual and the two proceed to battle each other. Hitsugaya is surprised when the man remarks that this reminds him of old times and attempts to remove his mask, though he fails. Regardless Hitsugaya deduces the man's identity and prepares to give chase when he flees, but is stopped by Matsumoto calling out to him. He offers no explanation and simply vanishes using Shunpo, shocking Matsumoto. Hitsugaya wanders the World of the Living but soon succumbs to his injuries and falls unconscious.[53] When he next awakens Hitsugaya finds himself in a bed with his wounds bandaged. When he attempts to rise he is told not to overexert himself or he will end up reopening his wound. Hitsugaya thanks this person for treating him and introduces himself. His rescuer introduces himself as Kenji Hiroshi, who claims the Onmitsukidō have been scouring the area. Kenji asks if Hitsugaya would know anything about that but is met only with silence. Kenji scratches his head in exasperation, claiming Captains have always given him trouble. Hitsugaya retorts that he is no longer a Captain, with Kenji replying that he can stay as long as he wants if that is the case. As Kenji leaves, Hitsugaya recalls the reports circulated to the Gotei 13 regarding Kenji, and remarks it was somewhat exaggerated.[54] Later that same evening Hitsugaya, leaving behind a note with the words "Thank you", departs Kenji's residence. Outside he is intercepted by Kenji, who remarks that Hitsugaya isn't really in the condition to be going anywhere. He then forcibly relocates him as a ball of electricity and fire converge on Hitsugaya's former location. Hitsugaya, recognizing the pair, moves to attack, but is stopped by Kenji before he can do so. Hitsugaya asks him what he is doing. Kenji tells Hitsugaya to leave, noting his task must be important, otherwise he wouldn't be attempting to move in such a state or go to such lengths to evade the Onmitsukidō. He claims that he will watch his back and take care of the Arrancar and catch up with him later. Hitsugaya, after a moment of hesitation and a stinging retort that he never asked for Kenji's help, thanks him again and departs with the Arrancar giving chase. Kenji, releasing his Shikai, moves past them both with an accelerated Shunpo and reiterates his earlier words: they'll be facing him and him alone. Hitsugaya leaves the scene as an explosion of fire and electricity obstructs Kenji from view.[55] Hitsugaya rests in an old shrine on the outskirts of Karakura Town and falls asleep. He is awoken however by the arrival of Lieutenants Shūhei Hisagi and Izuru Kira. Hisagi demands that he surrender himself and allow them to take him back to the Seireitei for questioning. Hitsugaya emerges, declaring he will do no such thing, and rushes to attack. Hisagi and Izuru manage to intercept his attack and, attempting to reason with him, state that this will be considered rebellion. Hitsugaya tells them to back off but Hisagi refuses, leading Hitsugaya to repel them both. Hisagi manages to temporarily paralyse him with Kidō. Hitsugaya releases his Bankai in retaliation, leaving both in critical condition.[56] Hitsugaya soon tracks Sōjirō down and calls him by his name when the two meet, leading Sōjirō to remove his mask. Sōjirō notes that life has led them on a strange path and reveals himself to be in possession of the stolen Ōin when asked by Hitsugaya where it is. Sōjirō claims he will use the Kyūtai to destroy the Soul Society and fulfil their shared dream, as lightning begins to crackle around them. Hitsugaya asks what a Kyūtai is but at that point Kenji returns, chased by the two Arrancar from before, who move to stand at Sōjirō's side. Hitsugaya reprimands Kenji for not leaving well enough alone, stating this is not his affair, but Kenji disagrees. He tells Hitsugaya that he made it his affair when two Arrancar tried to assault an injured man outside his own home. Kenji then fills Hitsugaya in on the nature of the Kyūtai, calling the Ōin in Sōjirō's possession the "Golden Kyūtai". Sōjirō, stating it is time, uses the Ōin to transport everyone to the Sōkyoku Hill in Soul Society. Hitsugaya asks how this is possible, with Kenji noting that the Golden Kyūtai has the power to manipulate space and time as the wielder wishes.[57] Sōjirō, believing that Hitsugaya will help him claim vengeance for the past, tells his old friend to cut the Ōin. Instead Hitsugaya attacks Sōjirō and forces him to block, leading the latter to ask what Hitsugaya is doing. He claims that Sōjirō should leave the Soul Society out of this, that it should be him he is fighting, and pushes Sōjirō back. Kenji intercepts the Arrancar, telling them they won't get past him, as Hitsugaya continues to clash with Sōjirō. They release their respective Zanpakutō and clash in mid-air as the forces of the Gotei 13 arrive. The former Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō, Anika Shihōin, leaps from the assembled group and attacks the Arrancar using Shunkō, as Kenji finishes them off with a full-powered Jitsugen. She then remarks that Kenji and Hitsugaya have done well. Hitsugaya begins to ask what she means but is stopped by Kenji, who whispers that Anika has things well in-hand. Anika reveals that Kenji, following Hitsugaya's departure from his home, contacted her and asked her to do some digging for him regarding a "Sōjirō Kusaka". Hitsugaya asks how Kenji even knew that name, with Kenji claiming Hitsugaya murmured it often in his sleep when he was treating his wound. Captain-Commander Yamamoto orders the assembled Shinigami to attack Sōjirō.[58] Hitsugaya attacks Sōjirō and the two old friends charge at one another, with Hitsugaya running Sōjirō through the heart. Hitsugaya then pulls him into a rough embrace and tells him that they will always be friends. Sōjirō thanks Hitsugaya for this and bids farewell as his spiritual body vanishes. Following Hitsugaya asks Kenji how this could have happened. Kenji again explains the abilities of the Ōin, but postulates that something else must have been responsible for Sōjirō ending up in Hueco Mundo where he recruited the female Arrancar. He claims however that he has no proof. Hitsugaya asks him what he plans to do now. Kenji claims he will return to his travels around the World of the Living, noting that the Gotei 13 cramp his style, but before departing he notes that Hitsugaya isn't half bad. Hitsugaya bids him farewell and silently thanks him for all his help.[59] Unbeknownst to Hitsugaya, however, was that Sōjirō yet again survived. The Outsider and Averian engineered his escape via a blue light, healed his injuries, and converted him into a Battle Doll. Sōjirō suffers amnesia, though upon seeing a picture of Hitsugaya he smirks.[60] |
Bount Incident[]
Hitsugaya receives a report from the Captain-Commander as well as a message that he is to report to him as soon as possible. He orders Matsumoto to tidy up his office, which she had left in an awful state, claiming he had more important matters to attend to. Before leaving he says he expects the paperwork to be done as well. Upon arriving outside the Captain-Commander's office Hitsugaya meets Lieutenant Shūhei Hisagi. When he asks what brings Hisagi here the latter informs him that he was summoned by the Captain-Commander regarding a matter in the World of the Living. As Hitsugaya reveals this was why he was summoned as well the duo are beckoned inside. Yamamoto tasks the pair with arresting Maki Ichinose, whose location has finally been discovered. Hitsugaya returns to the barracks of the 10th Division to discover Matsumoto gone and the work he instructed her to complete left undone. He does not bother even reading the message she left stuck to his desk.[61] In the World of the Living Hisagi remarks upon his last posting in the World of the Living, though Hitsugaya remains silent as the two companions had been enemies at the time, leading Hisagi to ask if Hitsugaya is alright. Instead of answering the duo proceed with their mission but encounter two more Shinigami. Hisagi notes that they are the only Shinigami assigned to the area, but Hitsugaya recognises one of the men and identifies him as Kenji Hiroshi and demands to know why he is here. The two parties, after the introductions of Hisagi and Yoshiro Kazuki, bring one another up to speed regarding both Maki and the Bount and decide that they have a shared enemy, unbeknown to all that Anika Shihōin and the Captain-Commander had planned for this very occurrence. Hitsugaya flash-steps ahead of the group who soon begin to follow.[62] En-route Hitsugaya opts to remain behind to combat a number of Bount, including the twins Hō and Ban, whose mater-based attacks nearly succeed in drowning Kenji. He requests a spacial freeze in the current area and proceeds to battle the twins. Before he can kill them however he is intercepted by another Bount who introduces himself as Gō Koga, who orders the twins to retreat. Hitsugaya, however, stops them. He requests the release of his limiter and then releases his Bankai, freezing the twins solid. Koga manages to prevent him shattering the pair but is driven into the floor by an ice dragon and frozen solid as well, with Hitsugaya remarking that they should remain where they are. He then departs the scene in order to regroup with his allies.[63] He is, however, ambushed by Mabashi, who uses his Doll, Ritz, to control Hitsugaya's actions. He subsequently disturbs the battle taking place in the Bount Mansion and attacks Kenji, who is quickly driven onto the back-foot, allowing the Bount -- including their leader -- to escape. Kenji unleashes Kyoaku's power to match the strength of Hitsugaya's Bankai, but is quickly exhausted from the effort.[64] It is only when Mabashi is killed by Hisagi and Yoshiro's combined efforts that Hitsugaya returns to his senses and ceases his attack, at which point he apologises. Kenji compliments Hitsugaya's Bankai and compares Hitsugaya to Dastan Shiba in strength. The foursome then agree to take the fight to the Bount in Soul Society, which was where they retreated to. They also come to the conclusion that Maki is a spy amongst the Bount's ranks who answers to Anika Shihōin.[65] On his return Hitsugaya, alongside Hisagi, makes his report to the Head-Captain; though he notably lies, telling Yamamoto that the large majority of the Bount where killed by Kenji who was more than happy to help with the investigation, when in fact they had been slain by Hitsugaya personally. Outside he is asked by Hisagi why he fabricated parts of his report. Hitsugaya explains that there are certain politics at play regarding Kenji's involvement: some see him as a mere criminal, others as an occasional asset, with others still viewing him as an out-and-out threat to the peace. He further claims that he lied in order to take some of the heat off Kenji, pointedly referring to the latter as a friend. Hisagi agrees to help with the deception.[66] Hitsugaya and Hisagi next visit the S.R.D.I, where they gain the means to track down the Bount's unique spiritual power. They quickly track the Bount leader and his remaining subordinates to Northern Rukongai, where they are promptly joined once more by Kenji and Maki. Maki quickly explains how his Zanpakutō works, which prompts Hitsugaya to release his Bankai and go full-force from the start. As Maki's Shikai wreaks havoc with the Bount's perception Hitsugaya, alongside Kenji, quickly seize the initiative. Hitsugaya, after being rendered invisible by Maki, encases the remaining Bount in ice, who are promptly shattered by Kenji. Jin, however, evades, but is instead attacked from behind by Maki, with both injuring themselves extensively. Whilst Kenji sees to Maki's wounds Hitsugaya resolves to finish Jin, and manages to encase the latter in ice, who is then shattered by Hisagi. Hitsugaya takes the opportunity to note that -- in the chaos of the fight -- he lost sight of both Kenji and Maki, which Hisagi is quick to agree with. Kenji encourages Hitsugaya to reach out for help if he ever needs it and thanks him for his help, adding he hopes they see each other again. Hitsugaya, however, disagrees; he reasons that if he does see Kenji again it could quite possibly be as enemies. The two friends part company; Kenji notably saying that, at present, they can't leave things any better than they are.[67] |
Kasumiōji Conspiracy[]
Winter War[]
Arrancar Invasion[]
Hitsugaya leads a team of Shinigami to the World of the Living to help substitute Shinigami Ichigo Kurosaki defend Karakura Town. Once there he explains to Ichigo the danger that the Arrancar pose to the Soul Society.[68] Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez eventually leads an invasion alongside his five Fracción and Hitsugaya mobilizes alongside his team to meet the threat, with Hitsugaya clashing with Shawlong Koufang.[69] Despite his best efforts and use of Bankai, Hitsugaya is severely wounded, and forced completely onto the defensive by Shawlong's Resurrección.[70] Shawlong reveals the nature of the Arrancar and Espada to Hitsugaya,[71] though while doing so the Soul Society approve the release of their limiters, allowing Hitsugaya to access his full-power.[72] Shawlong, shocked, asks what a limiter is. Hitsugaya reveals it is designed to prevent Shinigami above Lieutenant-class from causing unnecessary influence with their stronger reiatsu, and claims he is now five-times stronger as he attacks. Shawlong attempts to retreat but is frozen solid by Ryūsenka and subsequently killed.[73] Hitsugaya, however, succumbed to his wounds and exhaustion, and collapsed.[74] Hitsugaya, after recovering from the wounds he suffered in his battle with Shawlong, is contacted by Captain-Commander Yamamoto regarding Aizen's plan to create the Ōken. He speaks briefly with Momo as well but she attempts to defend Aizen's actions, and Yamamoto knocks her unconscious. Left enraged by what Aizen has done to her, Hitsugaya thanks Yamamoto for allowing her to speak regardless. He then reports to Yamamoto the combat abilities of the Arrancar, as well as the information provided to him by Shawlong.[75] Not long after his debriefing Karakura Town is assaulted for the second time by the Arrancar. Hitsugaya initially does battle with Yammy Llargo, who is the 10th Espada.[76] But even with his limiter released and his Shikai at full-power, Hitsugaya is only able to freeze him for a short period of time.[77] The battle is interrupted by new 6th Espada Luppi Antenor, who demands to fight all of Hitsugaya's team at once, releasing his Resurrección. Remembering the power-up Shawlong received in their battle, Hitsugaya moves to prevent this, releasing his Bankai to attack at full-power.[78] Despite his best efforts he is knocked down in only one attack and Luppi shifts his attention to Hitsugaya's team. Just as his team is about to be killed Hitsugaya returns, having restored his Bankai, and freezes Luppi solid with Sennen Hyōrō; saving Matsumoto in the process. Luppi, however, is rescued by Negación, and curses Hitsugaya.[79] In the aftermath of the battle he learns that Orihime Inoue has gone to Hueco Mundo. Hitsugaya takes his team back to Soul Society to prepare for the war with Aizen.[80] |
Preparations[]
Once back in the Soul Society Hitsugaya approaches Anika and asks her to get in contact with Kenji for him. Anika asks him why he needs Kenji's help though Hitsugaya assures her he is not attempting to arrest him or bring him before the Gotei 13, claiming that he instead needs a favour. Anika agrees to make the arrangements but requests they keep things discreet as Kenji is still viewed as a criminal. He meets Kenji in the outskirts of Northern Rukongai with Kenji remarking on the suddenness of Hitsugaya's request. Hitsugaya asks Kenji to return to the Gotei 13, saying his strength and experience fighting Arrancar is sorely needed, though Kenji refutes this. Kenji claims that Hitsugaya will surpass them all, though Hitsugaya counters this statement, saying Kenji was every bit the prodigy he was. Kenji refuses to help the Gotei 13 but agrees to help Hitsugaya, telling him he will help him to make his preparations for the war.[28] The pair meet the following day in Kisuke Urahara's underground training room. Kenji asks Hitsugaya how many Arrancar he has fought. He recounts his experiences with Shawlong, Yammy and Luppi, with Kenji recounting his experiences with Averian and his forces. Kenji proceeds to don his Hollow mask and attacks Hitsugaya. Hitsugaya demands to know what Kenji is doing as he blocks his strike. Kenji repels him and claims experience is the only way to deal with Arrancar and their kind. Kenji explains that he is a Visored: a Shinigami who has illegally gained the powers of a Hollow, and that he is the antithesis to an Arrancar. Kenji further states that if Hitsugaya wants experience he need only spar with him and he will get all the experience he needs. The duo spend several hours sparring, with Ino Choyo healing their injuries as and when they require it.[81] Hitsugaya finishes his sparring with Kenji and thanks him again for his assistance, noting he has learned a lot. He asks again if Kenji would be willing to help the Gotei 13. Kenji states that Hitsugaya and the Gotei 13 will have his help indirectly, which leads Hitsugaya to ask what he means. Kenji reveals that Anika has been busy putting together a vanguard of sorts that will be waiting in reserve. Hitsugaya asks why a reserve force would be needed. Kenji then reveals the existence of the Privaron Espada: former Espada who have lost their position, but are still far stronger than any Arrancar sans the reigning Espada themselves. Kenji states the group put together by Anika will be there encase the Privaron Espada make a move. The pair wish one another luck as they go their separate ways once more.[82] |
Battle of Fake Karakura Town[]
When Aizen, Gin and Tōsen invade Karakura Town alongside the top-three Espada, Hitsugaya is amongst the Captains and Lieutenants who await his arrival and stand in opposition to his schemes.[83] He eventually stands opposed to Tier Harribel and her Fracción, with Matsumoto stating she will challenge her three Fracción so that Hitsugaya can focus solely on Harribel.[84] When Momo arrives to help Matsumoto, Hitsugaya is relieved, though he questions why she is here, considering her connection to Aizen and the her prior defence of his actions. He relents however and he and Harribel begin their battle.[85] When her Fracción are defeated Harribel proceeds to overpower Hitsugaya whilst revealing her rank as the 3rd strongest Espada: this causes Hitsugaya to release his Bankai to match her suddenly increased strength, resulting in the pair locking blades.[86] Harribel questions Hitsugaya's position as Captain and releases her Resurrección and slashes him from shoulder-to-hip before he can even react.[87] Thinking he is defeated, Harribel moves to attack Captain-Commander Yamamoto, but is shocked when Hitsugaya attacks her again. He reveals he survived through the use of a one-time only ice-clone technique and advises Harribel not to underestimate the strength of a Captain.[88] The pair fight back-and-forth with Hitsugaya freezing her water-based attacks and Harribel melting his ice-based attacks, leading to a stalemate.[89] Harribel attacks him with a Cero but Hitsugaya claims that it was weak, further stating that she is waiting for the same thing he is: for the battlefield to fill with condensation, so she can finish him in one blow. He claims he'd rather not wait and reveals that everything under the heavens are under his control.[90] He uses Hyōten Hyakkasō and freezes Harribel in a large column of ice before she can attempt to melt it, noting that once one-hundred ice-flowers have bloomed across her body, she will be dead. He then notes that she won't be able to avenge her subordinates.[91] Wonderweiss's wail shatters the ice encasing Harribel and she glares at him as the two prepare to continue their battle.[92] He is further surprised when the giant Hollow creature, Hooleer, extinguishes the fire which Yamamoto had trapped Aizen, Gin and Tōsen within.[93] Before anything else can happen however the Visored arrive on-scene, and Hitsugaya questions who they are.[94] As they Hollowfy and swiftly dispatch the Menos he states how powerful they are, further noting that they remind him of Kenji.[95] Whilst Sajin Komamura declares his intention to fight alongside the Visored after helping Shinji Hirako, Harribel attempts to blind-side Hitsugaya, though Lisa Yadōmaru and Hiyori Sarugaki protect him from her. Lisa approaches him and states that Kenji sends his regards. He asks how she knows Kenji, with Lisa claiming he is one of them. He then remarks that he hasn't time to worry about allegiance and agrees to fight alongside them.[96] Hitsugaya and Hiyori bicker when he requests the two Visored deal with Harribel so he can fight Aizen, which leads Hiyori to question whether he is even a Captain. He apologizes to her but Hiyori continues to yell at him and calls him a midget, which leads Hitsugaya to yell right back at her, claiming she is shorter than he is. When he grabs her arm she calls him a pervert. Lisa, remarking that she understands his interest in a woman's body, claims she is going on ahead to engage the Espada herself.[97] They cease their tirade and attack alongside Lisa, though their battle is cut short by Aizen, who cuts Harribel down. Hitsugaya is amongst the fighters determined to protect Ichigo from Aizen.[98] Hitsugaya is the first to attack, noting nothing will happen otherwise, though he makes sure to attack alongside his allies, which Aizen acknowledges as being a wise move.[99] Hitsugaya remarks that his blade is filled with hate and that he would happily throw away his Captaincy if it meant killing Aizen.[100] Hitsugaya manages to freeze Aizen's arm as a follow-up to Suì-Fēng's attack, with both Shunsui and Suì-Fēng attacking in unison. Hitsugaya tells Aizen it is over and charges him under the effect of Shinji Hirako's Zanpakutō, which Aizen notices too late.[101] He stabs Aizen through the back but Ichigo, demanding to know what they are all doing, shocks the Captains. They then realize that they have been under the effect of Aizen's Zanpakutō the entire time and that the person Hitsugaya stabbed was not Aizen at all, but actually Momo. In his rage Hitsugaya rushes the real Aizen only for the latter to cut down Hitsugaya and the Captains in quick order, without much effort.[102] Ten days afterwards Hitsugaya begins training in a secluded cave, ashamed at his inability to protect Momo. He resolves to gain greater mastery of Hyōrinmaru.[103] |
Post Winter War[]
Pre-Fullbringer Incident[]
As part of his training to refine his control over Hyōrinmaru, Hitsugaya obtains leave from the Captain-Commander to travel to the World of the Living, citing his desire to speak with the Visored, where he visits Kenji's home. Kenji is surprised to find a Captain on his doorstep and asks Hitsugaya what brings him all the way out here. Hitsugaya states his desire to control his Zanpakutō with more ease and requests Kenji's aid in doing so. Kenji asks if Hitsugaya has anywhere to stay at the moment. When told no Kenji invites him inside and introduces Hitsugaya to Kusaka Kori and Kazuma Nishiki. Ino welcomes Hitsugaya to their home and tells him to get comfortable, with Kenji telling Kazuma to roll out his futon in Kusaka's room until Hitsugaya's business is resolved. Ino claims she was in the middle of dishing out some stew and puts out a plate for Hitsugaya, who thanks her. He finishes his first mouthful when Kusaka makes a jibe about free-loaders eating his food, with Kenji telling him to shut up. Kenji then states that they'll strike whilst the irons hot first thing in the morning and see what their options are from there. Hitsugaya agrees.[104] The next morning Kenji takes Hitsugaya to the underground training room of the Visored, where he and Hitsugaya are admonished by Hiyori Sarugaki. She demands to know why Kenji brought the perverted midget Captain with him. Hitsugaya quickly reminds her that she is shorter than he is, though Hiyori remarks that it's funny that he doesn't deny being a pervert and launches into a successive spree of curse-ridden admonishments. Hitsugaya tells her to cooperate or go away, claiming he is busy, reiterating that she is the midget. Hiyori then whacks him with one of her sandals before turning to admonish Kenji further, though he is nowhere to be found. Hitsugaya remarks that she likely scared him off and demands that she be his sparring partner, because she cost him his original one. She screams that she won't help but when Hitsugaya draws his Zanpakutō, Hiyori retaliates herself, blocking his strike. On the sidelines, behind a rock formation, Kenji claims that he got away just in-time. He silently apologizes to Hitsugaya before flash-stepping away.[105] A month later Hitsugaya plans to return to the Soul Society to continue his solitary training, content that what he has learned will help him bring his control of Hyōrinmaru to the next level. Kenji asks if he's sure he doesn't want to stick around for a while longer. Hitsugaya claims he has probably stayed too long, citing Hiyori's argumentative nature as a serious waste of his time, but he admits that her help was greatly appreciated. Kenji asks him if he would say that if she where here, with Hitsugaya saying no. He is then struck from behind with a slipper and called a stupid baldy by Hiyori, who had just arrived, seemingly having heard the whole conversation. He asks her why she bothered to come. Kenji takes the opportunity to chide Hiyori about having a crush on Hitsugaya, who blushes, whilst Hiyori stutters over her words trying to refute what Kenji says. Kenji then vanishes, achieving a rare victory over her, as Hiyori curses him. Before Hitsugaya leaves he thanks Hiyori for her help. She snorts dismissively at him and turns her back to leave as she says "Later, then". Hitsugaya notes he would like that and steps through the waiting Senkaimon, telling her to be sure and visit.[22] A week later Hitsugaya returns to the seclusion of his cave and swiftly freezes its interior with his reiatsu. He then conjures an icy-mist by releasing Hyōrinmaru into Shikai, noting that he can do this more easily now. A voice then rings out through the cave, claiming she'd like to hope he was doing it easier now, referring to him as a baldy. Hitsugaya fails to hide his irritation and demands to know why Hiyori has come. She angrily states that she owes Kenji a favour that he is now collecting on, noting quickly that she's not here to help him or any Shinigami, especially him. Hitsugaya says she is a poor liar before the pair begin sparring once more. Outside the cave Matsumoto claims the two make an interesting pair and asks Kenji, who is standing off to the side, if this was his plan from the start. Kenji claims that Lisa informed him of their bickering during the battle with Aizen and that he had a gut feeling they'd get along, nothing more. They turn to leave as Hiyori's voice, calling Hitsugaya a pervert, echoes in the cave depths, with Hitsugaya roaring at her to shut her snaggle-toothed mouth.[21] |
Fullbringer Incident[]
Hitsugaya is amongst the Shinigami who appear alongside Rukia to restore Ichigo's Shinigami powers. He listens in silence as Renji explains to Kūgo Ginjō how they all contributed reiatsu to the sword that restored Ichigo's power.[106] Hitsugaya informs Ichigo of Yamamoto's order, further noting that this decision was completely out of character for the Captain-Commander and that Ichigo was the one who changed this. Hitsugaya then reveals the two reasons behind Yamamoto returning his powers to him: the first was to repay the debt of gratitude they owe him, whilst the second was to deal with Ginjō himself, who was the first Substitute Shinigami.[107] When Ichigo questions how Ginjō could be the first Substitute Shinigami, Hitsugaya reminds him of the badge Ukitake gave him, and explains that the law regarding Substitute's was created solely for Ginjō. He is however interrupted by Byakuya with Hitsugaya then stating they should focus on Ginjō.[108] Hitsugaya protects Ikkaku from Yukio and tells him to pay attention. When Yukio separates everyone using his Fullbring, Hitsugaya ends up facing Yukio personally.[109] He remarks on how "tiresome" it is to fight someone like him.[110] Yukio uses his powers to summon a multitude of monsters to chase Hitsugaya, though he destroys them with ease, and is then told by Yukio that as a Captain he must've had a loving elite family. Hitsugaya deduces from this statement that Yukio was abandoned, causing the latter to angrily explain that he was the one who left his family and caused his father's suicide, though during the course of this Hitsugaya sneaks up on Yukio and freezes his legs and controllers.[111] Hitsugaya then saves Yukio from his own monsters, remarking that he didn't do it as a form of mercy; he just couldn't be sure of he could leave this place should Yukio die. He then freezes Yukio's body with the exception of his head, claiming he will spare him if he deactivates his Fullbring.[112] Once free Hitsugaya orders Yukio to free Ichigo but Yukio explains that he cannot,[113] though Ichigo's Bankai shatters it.[114] After explaining that the Captains knew Ichigo would eventually be targeted by Ginjō, Hitsugaya claims that Rukia was correct regarding Ichigo's loyalties and character. He further reiterates that Ichigo has changed the Soul Society; they where initially ordered to kill both Ichigo and Ginjō, but ended up restoring the former's power and baring witness to his decision. Before returning to the Soul Society he expresses his happiness that the Substitute who came after Ginjō was a man like Ichigo.[115] Following their return Hitsugaya is informed that Ichigo has come to the Soul Society. He bears witness to Ichigo requesting Ginjō's body so that he may be buried.[116] |
Post-Fullbringer Incident[]
Kenji is joined inside the Visored's old compound by Hitsugaya, who came on the latter's request. Hitsugaya notes that it has been a while and asks what all the urgency was about. Kenji claims it was the only way to drag him out here, noting that he's so serious he wouldn't respond to a social call. Hitsugaya cuts in claiming that, as a Captain, he has certain responsibilities, and fears leaving things in Matsumoto's hands for too long. Kenji decides to cut right to the heart of the matter then and hands Hitsugaya a segmented bracelet, with the latter asking what it is. Kenji explains that, should Hitsugaya wear it and need to, he will be able to contact him telepathically from any location and at any time without arousing suspicion. Hitsugaya, accepting the gift and clasping it to his right-wrist, says he has overstayed his welcome. Before he leaves however Kenji tells him to visit Hiyori, noting that Shinji would probably like to know how she's holding up. Hitsugaya groans in response.[117] |
Quincy Blood War[]
Hitsugaya is present when Captain-Commander Yamamoto reveals the existence of the Wandenreich, and is ordered to prepare for war alongside his fellow Captains.[118] Using his Renkei he contacts Kenji, asking if he has any relevant knowledge regarding the Quincy. Kenji provided Hitsugaya with a brief explanation of their skills, drawing particular attention towards Blut.[119] Upon entering the battlefield he unleashes his Bankai but is left in shock when Daiguren Hyōrinmaru is stolen by Cang Du.[120] Despite his shock and anger he maintains his calm and orders Matsumoto to inform the other Captains of this development via Tenteikūra.[121] He is present when Rin Tsubokura reports that Ichigo Kurosaki is on his way via transmitter swords.[122] Hitsugaya clashes with Cang Du, who activates Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, thus gaining its ice wings. Before it can be used against him however Captain-Commander Yamamoto releases his Bankai, with Cang Du commenting in surprise that the ice of Daiguren Hyōrinmaru is melting. Hitsugaya informs him that the water is gradually disappearing from Soul Society, and that Hyōrinmaru is now useless.[123] Rallying, Hitsugaya continues to attack Cang Du, but the surprising death of Yamamoto at the hands of Yhwach shocks him.[124] He is relieved when Ichigo is finally reported to have arrived in the Soul Society.[125] When the Wandenreich retreat from the Soul Society, Hitsugaya is present alongside his fellow Captains in the 1st Division barracks, as they mourn the passing of Yamamoto. When the in-fighting threatens to spiral out of control Shunsui Kyōraku reminds them of their duty, with Hitsugaya remaining silent.[126] Hitsugaya then witnesses the arrival of the Royal Guard outside the walls of the Seireitei.[127] When the Royal Guard leave and things have quietened down a bit Hitsugaya once more contacts Kenji via Renkei, who notes it rare for Hitsugaya to contact him so often. He tells Kenji that he needs a favour and explains what has been happening in the Soul Society. Kenji surmises that Hitsugaya, who relies on his Zanpakutō predominately, wants to learn to fight without a Bankai and asks if he is correct with his assessment, with Hitsugaya agreeing.[119] He realizes that he cannot lament the loss of his Bankai and needs to build a solid foundation, and visits a dojo to retrain him in swordsmanship as he waits for Kenji to arrive.[128] Shortly after Kenji arrives alongside Kusaka Kori, the former tells Hitsugaya that he is going to be put through hell, as Kenji and Kusaka draw their Zanpakutō. They advise Hitsugaya to take a ready stance because he'll be facing them both.[119] Hitsugaya, alongside Matsumoto, returns when the Wandenreich launch their second invasion, saving numerous Shinigami from the fire-based attacks of Bazz-B.[129] Bazz-B, recognizing Hitsugaya, claims they will make a good match and proceeds to burn through Hitsugaya's ice easily, describing it as thin. Hitsugaya, initializing his strategy alongside Matsumoto, shows the fruits of his recent training by unveiling a multi-layer ice wall using Matsumoto's Shikai to fill the gaps with ash, before returning her Zanpakutō to its sealed state, creating many empty layers. Hitsugaya then wounds Bazz-B,[130] but is shocked when the Sternritter gets back up to continue the fight, seemingly without injury.[131] He explains just how powerful his flames are, claiming he offset the flames produced by the late Captain-Commander Yamamoto during their first invasion, in order to save himself and two fellow Sternritter from certain death. Hitsugaya orders Matsumoto to retreat and attempts to stall Bazz-B with a barrier constructed of thin ice, but his opponent easily burns through it, and blasts a hole clean through Hitsugaya's chest.[132] Hitsugaya continues to struggle however and manages to ensnare Bazz-B in a trap, but the latter burns through it with ease, further injuring Hitsugaya in the process, who falls to the floor defeated. Cang Du, who stole his Bankai previously, then arrives to finish him off, and momentarily argues with Bazz-B.[133] Hitsugaya, lying defeated, struggles to move. Cang Du then drops a heavily wounded Matsumoto by his side, and claims that those who have lived their lives together should die together, and then releases Daiguren Hyōrinmaru. Urahara Kisuke initiates his counter-plan however and manages to distribute Shin'eiyaku to the Captains, which Hitsugaya takes. Immediately after Daiguren Hyōrinmaru breaks, wounding Cang Du.[134] Cang Du, expressing surprise, checks his medallion but finds that it is working properly, and further expresses his confusion as to why Hitsugaya's Bankai is returning to him. Hitsugaya, regaining the ice-wing Cang Du lost, claims that Daiguren Hyōrinmaru may simple wish to return home.[135] Cang Du attempts to finish Hitsugaya off with the Bankai before it fully returns to him, but the ice simply redirects away from him, leading Hitsugaya to explain that Daiguren Hyōrinmaru cannot attack itself. Hitsugaya then hears the voice of Hyōrinmaru and welcomes him back. Daiguren Hyōrinmaru then returns fully and takes on a darker manifestation, which Hitsugaya reveals to be the cause of temporary Hollowfication. Cang Du attempts another attack but Hitsugaya, claiming that this is Hyōrinmaru's crest, freezes the Sternritter in a giant cross-shaped flower. He apologizes snidely, saying he should have made the shape a pentagram, as he finally falls to the floor.[136] As he attempts to approach Matsumoto, asking her to wait for him, he succumbs to his wounds and collapses.[137] In his desperation Hitsugaya contacts Kenji via Renkei and explains the situation in detail, as well as the state that he and Rangiku currently find themselves in. Kenji, fearing the worst, assures Hitsugaya that he is on his way. He instructs him to grab hold of Matsumoto and proceeds to channel his spiritual power to the pair through Hitsugaya's Renkei, further imploring Hitsugaya not to die in a place like that.[138] Kenji's actions ensure that Hitsugaya and Matsumoto survive, though the pair are found by Giselle Gewelle before Kenji can locate them and are subsequently turned into her zombies. Giselle unleashes Hitsugaya in order to combat Mayuri Kurotsutchi and his revived Arrancar, with Mayuri declaring how dangerous this development is.[139] Hitsugaya swiftly defeats both Ikkaku and Yumichika. Mayuri notes that Hitsugaya is moving like he did when he was alive. Hitsugaya attacks him but Mayuri evades with Shunpo.[140] Charlotte Chuhlhourne engages Hitsugaya but is cut down with a single attack, with Mayuri blocking his attempted follow-up with a Kidō barrier.[141] Mayuri suggests that Hitsugaya help him test some medicine as the two Captains clash. Mayuri succeeds in incapacitating Hitsugaya by using a drug which effects one's short-term memory, allowing one to see the future. Every time he kills Mayuri his mind is returned to a set point before. Mayuri paralyses Hitsugaya with his Shikai before administering another drug. The zombified Kensei, Rose and Matsumoto appear behind Mayuri to stop him, with the Arrancar intercepting them. Mayuri devotes his time to Hitsugaya, who screams out in agony.[142] Hitsugaya is present when Kenji finally arrives. Mayuri explains to Kenji that he may be capable of reverting Hitsugaya to his former state, but notes he cannot do the same for the Visored. Incensed by this Kenji departs to find Kensei and Rose and reminds Mayuri to look after Hitsugaya.[143] Mayuri has Hitsugaya and Matsumoto placed within large capsules which Nemu Kurotsuchi takes with her when the remaining Shinigami enter the Soul King Palace. Their survival is revealed to Ikkaku and Yumichika, though at the cost of a reduced lifespan. Hitsugaya quietly thanks Mayuri for his help returning him to normal.[144] When Hiyori, who is joined by her fellow Visored, launch an attack on Gerard Valkyrie, Hitsugaya rushes to the scene, with Kenji niggling him for being worried about Hiyori via their Renkei. Hitsugaya admonishes Kenji, saying that it is his duty to intervene, and demands that he be quiet. Kenji goes on to note however that his reaction just now has sold the farm. He then tells Hitsugaya to hurry up or he will miss his big entrance. In the meantime Gerard emerges from Lisa, Love and Hachigen's joint attack unscathed, and attempts to crush them underhand. When the Quincy raises his gigantic arm to kill the Shinigami by decimating the surrounding area, Hitsugaya arrives in the nick of time to freeze his arm, remarking that Gerard should stay there for all eternity.[145] Kenji states that now he is just showing off, eliciting a smile from Hitsugaya, who sets his sights on the Quincy. Gerard, however, breaks free, forcing Hitsugaya to come up with an alternative method to deal with him. When he is attacked Byakuya Kuchiki intervenes to block the intended strike, who then claims that Hitsugaya stands no hope of defeating Gerard alone. Hitsugaya attempts to joke around with Byakuya though he only half-heartedly responds, which causes Hitsugaya some annoyance. When Gerard attempts another attack he is intercepted by Zaraki Kenpachi, who severs Gerard's arm.[146] Gerard, however, regenerates, leading Byakuya to explain his unique abilities, leading Hitsugaya to remark that Gerard must have been smaller. Zaraki, undeterred, moves to attack him again, only for Hitsugaya to intercept his attack, pointedly reminding Zaraki of the consequences should Gerard fall down to the Soul Society at his current size. The two Captains are nearly crushed beneath Gerard's foot, but Zaraki stops his foot and throws him into a tower, and proceeds to release his Zanpakutō into Shikai. This shocks Hitsugaya, who watches as Zaraki and Gerard clash.[147] As Gerard explains his powers to Zaraki, Hitsugaya claims that reason does not apply to his powers and attempts to attack him again, only for Gerard to effortlessly defend himself. Gerard further states that Zaraki is now his primary opponent. Hitsugaya is then attacked by Zaraki who proceeds to send the younger Captain flying down into the ground, where he tells him to stay out of his fight. Realizing that Gerard is not an opponent even Zaraki can defeat, who has since removed his eye-patch, Hitsugaya tells Byakuya that he will use his full-power to freeze Gerard to the bone, and implores Byakuya to smash him to pieces with his own Zanpakutō afterwards. Just as the duo begin to mobilize Gerard, who has since overpowered Zaraki, sees through their plot and counters them both.[148] The two Captains are saved when Zaraki suddenly unleashes his Bankai, blowing them both away. As Zaraki renews his assault he knocks Gerard off the edge of Wahrwelt, shocking Hitsugaya into action once again. He is however surprised when Gerard grows wings and returns to confront Zaraki again.[149] Hitsugaya and Byakuya decide to keep their distance as Zaraki releases a guttural roar as he bisects the Quincy, though he soon reforms himself. Gerard hits all three with a blast from the tip of Hoffnung, causing a piece of Wahrwelt to fall to the Soul Society. Hitsugaya successfully uses his Bankai to stop its descent, though he sent flying when Gerard begins overpowering Zaraki. At his limit Hitsugaya is told by Byakuya to reseal his Bankai, though Hitsugaya remarks that the ice-petals are not a countdown as was originally believed, but actually the manner in which he reaches his Bankai's "matured" state. Hitsugaya then emerges as a physically matured man with ice covering various parts of his body, as Byakuya looks on.[150] In response to Byakuya's surprised look Hitsugaya explains that he was required to age himself in order to use his Bankai to its fullest level, and proceeds to reintroduce himself to Gerard when the Quincy asks who he is. He avoids Gerard when he slams his sword into the ground nearby and then freezes his thrown shield, before reprimanding Gerard for casually throwing around things that could fall to the Seireitei below. Hitsugaya then cuts through Gerard's sword, noting its abilities are voided due to its frozen state, which leads the Quincy to summon his bow. Before he can fire however Hitsugaya freezes Gerard solid with Shikai Hyōketsu. He explains that it takes only four seconds for him to freeze anything before him. Gerard, however, breaks free, and grabs Hitsugaya in his large hand, claiming that he cannot be bound by the elements of the world. Gerard is subsequently toppled by Zaraki which frees Hitsugaya, who asks Gerard whether or not he thought there would be consequences for touching him. Gerard's arm is frozen solid and Byakuya, seizing his opportunity, destroys Gerard's head with Ikka Senjinka.[151] As this happens Hitsugaya freezes Gerard's torso, causing him to shatter completely. He then collapses from exhaustion, but is caught by Byakuya, who notes he pushed his body too far. When Gerard begins to regenerate however Hitsugaya reacts angrily.[152] Renji and Rukia reappear however and are quickly overwhelmed by Gerard's new form, with Hitsugaya remarking on their survival. They do not recognize him however, leading Hitsugaya to confirm that he is Hitsugaya's "older brother" when commented upon by Rukia.[153] He then joins Byakuya's attempts to send them to Ichigo's aid, noting that the true duty of a Shinigami is to fight to protect their friends and Humans. He thus surmises they will be of greater use to Ichigo.[154] He proceeds to continue his fight with Gerard though the battle is interrupted by Kenji Hiroshi, who asks if Hitsugaya and Byakuya need assistance, with the three partaking in friendly banter. Byakuya notes it has been many years since he last saw Kenji, whilst Hitsugaya thanks him for his earlier help. Kenji then asks Hitsugaya to "make it storm", which he does by directing his reiatsu towards the heavens. He then watches as Kenji pulls a bolt of lightning from the sky and cycles it through his Shikai to strike Gerard, which paralyses his limbs and buys the trio a momentary breather. Kenji remarks that most would have been reduced to ask by his attack which leads Hitsugaya to remind him that they are facing a true monster. When Gerard begins controlling his limbs with Ransōtengai both Hitsugaya and Kenji respond with groans of annoyance, with Kenji stating Gerard is annoying him, though Hitsugaya claims that Kenji just stole his line. The trio are then dispersed by Gerard slamming his foot onto the ground. Hitsugaya opts to continue to attack Gerard with aid from Byakuya as Kenji relocates Shinji and Momo. He is later informed of Momo's survival, but notes to Kenji that he is swiftly approaching his limit. Hitsugaya then watches as Kenji opts to buy the two Captains a breather and dons his Hollow mask whilst simultaneously releasing his Bankai. He then attacks Gerard under the effects of Shinji's Sakanade, but his battle is cut-short when Kenji selflessly protects the remaining unconscious Visored from a stray arrow fired by Gerard.[155] Hitsugaya screams Kenji's name but is shocked when the light of Yhwach's Auswählen kills Gerard.[156] Hitsugaya deactivates his Bankai and lands lightly in the vicinity of Kenji's body. He then approaches his downed friend and, fearing the worst, says his name. When Kenji weakly responds Hitsugaya grasps his wrist and shares some of his own dwindling reiatsu with him through their Renkei, noting that Kenji cannot die here or his daughter would be upset. Kenji weakly agrees.[155] Hitsugaya is next seen several days later recuperating in the ruined barracks of the 4th Division following the war's conclusion, where he occupies a room close to Kenji and the Visored. He arrives in Kenji's room to hear him state his desire to get beyond drunk, with Hitsugaya noting that he is usually against the consumption of alcohol but will make an exception this time and join him. He subsequently bore witness to Hiyori's awakening and watched her slap Kenji with her sandal and was noticeably perturbed when Kenji suggests she slap Hitsugaya instead. He was then smacked in the head also.[157] After making a full recovery Hitsugaya returns to his duties and complains that Matsumoto, as usual, is nowhere to be found. Before he can do any paperwork however he is interrupted by Kenji, Matsumoto and fellow Captains Kensei and Rose. Hitsugaya asks why Kenji isn't prepairing for his meeting with the Central 46. Kenji, however, ignores him. Whilst Kensei demands to know why Kenji has ordered them all to meet here Rose tells him to be quiet, because they wouldn't be alive had Kenji not intervened in the war. Kenji then reveals that Mayuri's treatment of Hitsugaya and Matsumoto may have been successful, but it was also flawed; he subsequently corrects the flaw by using two of the Kyūtai to return the span of their live to normal. Rose questions how Kenji even obtained the orbs though Kenji only mentions that he and Van Satonaka found them quite some time ago. Kensei, meanwhile, still demands to know why he and Rose have been called. Kenji then reveals that his meeting with the Central 46 is merely a ruse so that the judiciary body can gain access to the Kyūtai in his possession, and further states they they mean to arrest him for what they have deemed to be treasonous actions. Kensei curses Mayuri for outing that Kenji possessed the orbs whilst Rose deduces that Anika Shihōin was responsible for tipping Kenji off. Before Hitsugaya can share an opinion the five are surprised by the arrival of Shunsui Kyōraku, who remarks that their conversation is very dark considering their recent victory. He then assures Kenji that the Gotei 13 view him as an ally, before promptly departing, but not before subtly suggesting that Kenji should not attend the meeting. Hitsugaya suggests the three Visored depart as well else they arouse unwanted suspicion.[158] |

Following Yhwach's defeat by Ichigo Kurosaki an extended period of peace reigns over the Soul Society, though Kenji's growing group of spiritually aware exiles and rogues are deemed to be a rebellious and dangerous future element by the Central 46; especially Kenji himself, who the Central 46 viewed as a criminal.[159] Hitsugaya and the Visored aligned with the Gotei 13 successfully advocate the position that having allies of power stationed in the World of the Living can be a beneficial aid, which becomes the accepted view point. Kenji's group, which came to be known as the Ryū Order, was allied with the Gotei 13 though the alliance did not come easily to either side.[160] Hitsugaya helped the reconstruction effort that lasted for a number of years.[161] Ten years of peace subsequently reign over both the Soul Society and the World of the Living.[162] Hitsugaya then travels with Matsumoto, Kensei and Hisagi to the 1st Division barracks to attend Rukia Kuchiki's promotion to Captaincy of the 13th Division, and meets Captain Tetsuzaemon Iba en-route. He praises Iba's work ethic after witnessing the latter's training, whilst chiding Matsumoto for her lack of work ethic, who then deflects the remarks to Hisagi. She states that Hisagi boasted that he had mastered his Bankai but claims that no one has seen him release it. Even Kensei humorously claims that Hisagi has not achieved his Bankai. Hisagi then counters that he hasn't had the chance to use it on account of the peace. Hitsugaya quickly remarks that this means that nothing has occurred in the past ten years to break the peace they are now enjoying.[163] He is then present at the ceremony alongside Lisa, Byakuya, Isane and Suì-Fēng when Rukia finally arrives.[164] Later Hitsugaya was alerted to strange Hollow activity in Hueco Mundo by Kenji. Apparently the Hollow where acting with greater intelligence and in far greater numbers. In response the Gotei 13 sanctioned a joint mission to investigate the cause which Hisagi was put in command of. Hitsugaya then brought Hisagi's attention to the reports submitted years ago by Rukia regarding Ashido Kanō, and suggested that he start by ascertaining whether or not Ashido was alive. He figured that, if he survived, he may be of some help.[165] |

Equipment[]
- Renkei: Hitsugaya was given one of these bracelets by Kenji in the aftermath of the Fullbringer Incident involving Kūgo Ginjō, which is linked to one worn by Kenji.[117] During the Quincy Blood War he used it to contact Kenji on numerous ocassions;[119] Kenji even used it to funnel spiritual power to Hitsugaya and Matsumoto following the former's victory over Cang Du.[138] Hitsugaya kept it with him throughout the intervening years and still had it in his possession post-Collapse, using it on numerous occasions to keep in touch with Kenji and relay information to him; albeit it was concealed.[Notes 1] Hitsugaya notably contacted Kenji when Averian appeared in the midst of one of the meetings of the Six Directions leadership, allowing Kenji to intervene. The bracelets enabled the two to fight in conjunction without speaking a single word, allowing them both to swiftly overpower even empowered Battle Dolls without much effort.[17]
Powers and Abilities[]
Natural Genius: Hitsugaya was a natural genius even as a child who not only graduated the Shinō Academy early,[41] but also heard the voice of his Zanpakutō call out to him in his sleep without any form of specialized training.[31] Shunsui Kyōraku stated that, due to his natural genius, Hitsugaya will likely surpass him in only one-hundred years.[166] Kenji also claimed that Hitsugaya holds vast potential and states that he will eventually enter into a league all of his own, noting that all he needs is time.[28] Hitsugaya was the youngest Shinigami to ever become a Captain, as well as the youngest Shinigami to obtain Bankai.[41] When required to prepare for future threats in a short period of time, Hitsugaya has demonstrated the ability to quickly grasp new concepts and develop his still existent skill-set to meet these challenges, demonstrating an enhanced growth rate in addition to his natural genius.[24]
- Expert Strategist & Tactician: Hitsugaya is an accomplished tactician despite his young age, and is more than capable of quickly determining the strengths and weaknesses an opponent and how to properly counter them.[167] He was frequently trusted by Captain-Commander Yamamoto to undertake dangerous and vital missions on behalf of the Gotei 13.[168] His instincts on the battlefield are also honed despite his relative inexperience. When the 3rd Espada's power increased sharply Hitsugaya's reaction enabled him to survive what would have been a fatal strike.[169] When his Bankai was stolen Hitsugaya quickly devised a method to more effectively utilize the limited quantities of ice Hyōrinmaru can produce whilst in Shikai,[170][171][172] and later did so without Matsumoto's help by integrating Kidō.[13] By the time he defected to Kentaro's side he was swiftly fit to determine the best course of action and act accordingly, enabling him to flawlessly sync his movements and attacks with both Kenji and Lisa to cause far more severe damage to even enhanced Battle Dolls.[17]
- Keen Intellect: Hitsugaya excels at everything he turns his hand and mind towards.[167] He graduated the Shinō Academy at the top of his class with the highest scores in both written and academic tests, with Sōjirō Kusaka as his only rival to speak of.[3] Hitsugaya was the first Captain within the Gotei 13 to suspect Gin Ichimaru, and eventually discovered that he and Sōsuke Aizen where in cahoots all along, with them being responsible for the chaotic nature of the Central 46's recent rulings regarding the execution of Rukia Kuchiki.[51] He quickly deduced the potential damage should Gerard fall to the Soul Society as his size, and promptly stopped Zaraki's charge.[173]
Immense Spiritual Energy: Hitsugaya possesses incredibly high and potent levels of spiritual power, which is represented by the element of ice.[11] The level of spiritual power he possesses is enough for him to competently engage the likes of Kenjiro Hiroshi and Van Satonaka, which is indicative of his level as a combatant beyond the level of a typical Captain-class fighter,[12] though he was ultimately no match for Averian's premier Battle Doll, even whilst in Bankai.[11] Post-Collapse he was easily the strongest Captain in the Gotei Remnant, second only to the Captain-Commander in terms of raw spiritual power.[13] Even before the death of Shunsui Kyōraku he was nominated by the Central 46 to become the new Captain-Commander, though he ultimately refused, and did so again when Shunsui passed away.[29] Gin Ichimaru once labelled Hitsugaya as a "heavenly guardian who was reincarnated every few centuries", which seems to play some part in his massive spiritual power.[174] Hitsugaya is one of the few individuals capable of naturally sensing the presence of Godly beings, chief amongst them Averian and his Battle Dolls.[17]
- Jiseiryū (自制流, Self-Control Method; lit. Art of Controlling One's Self): Hitsugaya learned this technique following the maturation of his Bankai. When Gerard caught him in his large grip, Hitsugaya subsequently flash-froze the Quincy's arm. He pointedly told Gerard that he was foolish for thinking there would be no repercussions for touching him.[175] Byakuya, however, was fit to physically support Hitsugaya, proving he can expertly control who his ice affects.[176]
- Masterful Reiatsu Control: Hitsugaya's reiatsu was initially beyond his ability to control. His mere presence effected his grandmother so much Matsumoto noted that he would eventually kill her.[177] He eventually achieved enough mastery of his reiatsu to gain a reputation for sneaking up on people undetected.[178] Prior to the Fullbringer Incident he trained extensively, both on his own and with Hiyori, to gain more control of both Hyōrinmaru and his own powers.[105][22] A mere exertion of his reiatsu can swiftly freeze his immediate surroundings.[21]
- Storm Summoning: By focusing his icy reiatsu into a column that reaches towards the heavens, Hitsugaya changes the surrounding weather without actually needing to release Hyōrinmaru or use Tensō Jūrin, though the mere release of his Shikai and Bankai can do the same.[179] When in use Hitsugaya could turn conditions stormy, causing lightning storms and freak showers of snow, which he could manipulate for various purposes, or as a means of strengthening his allies, as was the case with Kenji.[155] Hitsugaya eventually learned to create vast quantities of ice without needing to release Hyōrinmaru, by using the colder temperature in conjunction with his reiatsu.[180]
- Ice Generation: Hitsugaya was always capable of producing limited quantities of ice without releasing Hyōrinmaru, for he was fit to freeze the Zanpakutō of the fire-wielding Arrancar during the Ōin crisis when he crossed blades with her.[53] After specialized training on his own and with Hiyori he was capable of swiftly freezing the interior of a cave without even using any of Hyōrinmaru's released stages.[21] Once his Bankai was stolen by Cang Du he worked alongside Rangiku (using the ash of her Shikai) to greatly refine this ability, enabling him to produce a number of additional abilities whilst in Shikai to counteract the small quantities of ice he can use with Hyōrinmaru released.[181] He would then refine it further through Kidō, thus removing the necessary additive of Rangiku's Zanpakutō.[13] This refinement enabled him to produce enough quantities of ice to completely encase Gerard Valkyrie's arm when he grew to gigantic proportions, whilst creating a separate ice-structure on which Hitsugaya himself stood upon.[180] By the time of his defection to Kentaro's side he was fit to instantly create complex ice formations to trap his enemies as well as bolster his allies.[17]
Zanjutsu Mastery: Hitsugaya primarily favours the use of his Zanpakutō in battle over other forms of combat, relying predominately upon his Shikai and Bankai.[11] He has shown himself fit to engage masterful swordsman such as Kenjiro and Van for extended periods of time without succumbing to their advanced application, or even receiving more than superficial wounds from the exchange.[12] After the theft of his Bankai by Cang Du he enlisted the aid of Kenji and Kusaka to help him build on his foundation, learning how to fight high-level opposition without needing to constantly rely on his Bankai.[119] In a short period of time Hitsugaya rebuilt his fighting style, to the point he was swiftly fit to incapacitate Ikkaku Madarame, Yumichika Ayasegawa and the revived Charlotte Chuhlhourne, without much effort.[182] Following the Collapse his skills have seemingly improved. He was capable of following and reacting to the unpredictable Zanjutsu of Hisagi when the latter used his Shikai, demonstrating advanced speed and reflexes, despite the considerable improvement of Hisagi across-the-board since their last battle.[13]
Hakuda Expertise: Although he prefers to use his Zanpakutō in battle, Hitsugaya is nevertheless a skilled bare-handed fighter, who possesses remarkable speed and reflexes.[183] He was capable of knocking Momo out with a single blow whilst in mid-air.[184] As a zombie under the control of Giselle Gewelle, Hitsugaya demonstrated complete ruthlessness and relentlessness in his attacks, attacking swiftly and without mercy, often combining his Hakuda skills with his greater Zanjutsu abilities.[185] He showed the requisite skill to combine his ice generation abilities with his Hakuda prowess and defeated Yumichika with a single ice-coated knee-strike, which punctured the latter's body, before head-butting him.[186] This new fighting-style was the result of Kenji and Kusaka helping him achieve a stronger foundation following the theft of his Bankai.[119]
Enhanced Durability: Despite his lean-built physique and small size, Hitsugaya is a remarkably durable combatant. During his battle with Shawlong he was injured extensively but managed to fight back and win the battle when his limiter was released.[187] During the Blood War he received grievous injuries from Bazz-B, which he was able to ignore for a time.[188] He managed to retain consciousness long enough to reclaim his stolen Bankai and defeat Cang Du, though he eventually succumbed to his wounds and only survived due to Kenji's intervention via Renkei.[138] Following the war Hitsugaya reapplied himself to self-improvement. When he fought against Averian during the First Spiritual War he survived almost being cut cleanly in two, retaining consciousness long enough to aid Amagai in deflecting Averian's Reīssen.[11] When The Collapse occurred Hitsugaya was capable of ignoring the wounds inflicted upon him by the Hollowfied Shūhei Hisagi.[13]
Kidō Expertise: Although not his preferred method of combat by any means, for he relies primarily on Zanjutsu whilst in battle, Hitsugaya possesses ample skills with Kidō. His most notable achievement was using Hadō #17. Haiton and an advanced Kidō technique to replicate the ash of Matsumoto's Zanpakutō for his own ends.[13] His favourite spells appear to be Sajō Sabaku and Shakkahō.
Hohō Expertise: Hitsugaya possesses advanced skill in Shunpo, demonstrated when he skilfully switched places with Amagai during his battle with Kenjiro and Van, catching the latter completely off-guard.[12] He was also fast enough to intercept an attack from Averian against Amagai, freezing the former's arm in close-quarters.[11] Following the Collapse his speed has seemingly improved. He was fit to react to Hisagi's Black Tornado swiftly enough to escape bisection, though he was momentarily caught off-guard by the latter's Hollow mask enhancement.[13] His speed whilst in Bankai is notably higher due to the addition of the ice wings, which enables Hitsugaya to make precision movements even when twisting and turning through the air.
Zanpakutō[]
Hyōrinmaru (氷輪丸, Ice Ring). Hitsugaya's Zanpakutō is considered the strongest ice-type Zanpakutō in the whole Reikai.[189] It is sealed in the form of a katana which is slightly longer than the normal variety, which possesses a guard in the shape of a four-pointed bronze-coloured star and has a dark blue sheath.[190] The blade was once as long as Hitsugaya was tall, though as he is now taller, this no longer is the case. Due to his mastery of Hyōrinmaru and the deep bond the two share, Hitsugaya can manifest Hyōrinmaru in a humanoid form. Hyōrinmaru can even manifest himself without his master's express command to protect him from harm, shown as Hyōrinmaru exerting control over the ice created by his Shikai or Bankai to intercept attacks.[191][192] He can even manifest his Bankai form independently from Hitsugaya, which causes him to take the form of a serpentine ice dragon with large wings and crimson-coloured eyes.[193]
- Shikai: Hitsugaya releases Hyōrinmaru with the command "Sit Upon the Frozen Heavens" (霜天に坐せ, Sōten ni Zase).[194] When released in Soul Society and later the Reikai, where Hitsugaya is not placed under the effects of a limiter, Hyōrinmaru effects a large area of roughly seven-square-miles and turns conditions stormy, creating a blizzard.[179] The release lengthens Hyōrinmaru further and gains a length of chain attached to a crescent-shaped blade which can, through will, extend greatly in length. Anything entangled by this chain or blade can be frozen solid.[195]
- Shikai Special Ability: Hyōrinmaru possesses the ability to control the weather over potentially seven-square-miles,[179] not to mention the basic ability to manipulate water and ice for a variety of effects,[196] and is considered the strongest amongst ice-type Zanpakutō.[189] A mere swing of his Zanpakutō can create vast quantities of ice which overflow from the blade in the form of an immense serpentine dragon constructed entirely of ice,[197] or as an overwhelming wave of ice that travels along the ground to freeze anything in its path.[3]
- Tensō Jūrin (天相従臨, Subjugation of the Heavens): the aspect of Hyōrinmaru's power that deals with controlling the weather, specifically the water in the surrounding atmosphere.[198] It is this power that extends over the seven-square-mile radius, though during the events of the Winter War it was not yet mature. Hitsugaya felt he could not control who or what he killed if he should use it whilst in Bankai.[179] It essentially provides Hitsugaya with an endless supply of water to utilize his more advanced abilities, though the quantity is reduced whilst in Shikai, being comparatively small compared to the quantity available whilst in Bankai.[199]
- Hyōten Hyakkasō (氷天百華葬, Frozen Heaven Hundred Flower Funeral): an extension of Hitsugaya's Tensō Jūrin, usable during Bankai, that opens a hole in the sky which rains snow down upon an opponent. Anyone touched by the snow is encased in a towering pillar of ice, with numerous flowers sprouting all over their bodies. Hitsugaya claims that, with the blooming of one-hundred flowers, the victims life is forfeit.[200]
- Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki (真空多層氷壁, Multilayer Vacuum Ice Wall): Hitsugaya, by introducing ash between the layers of ice, creates a multi-layer ice wall with several empty layers, using only the bare minimum of ice.[201] This technique proved powerful enough to resist a three-fold attack from Akane, Hinata and Kasumi, completely protecting Akiye and Hitsugaya from harm.[14]
- Shinkū no Kōri no Yaiba (真空の氷の刃, Vacuum Ice Blade): Hitsugaya manipulates Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki into the form of a sword, which is expelled from the tip of his Zanpakutō.[202]
- Ryōjin Hyōheki (綾陣氷壁, Woven-Ice Wall): Hitsugaya generates a protective wall of ice by finely weaving threads of ice together,[203] which was capable of protecting him from Hisagi's Black Tornado.[13]
- Rokui Hyōketsujin (六衣氷結陣, Six-Clothed Ice Binding-Array): Hitsugaya lays down five snowflake-shaped crystals in a pentagonal shape, which produces an immense pillar of ice once an opponent steps within its confines, completely encasing them.[204] During the First Spiritual War he demonstrated the ability to utilize this particular ability whilst in Bankai, which greatly enhanced its effectiveness.[11]
- Bankai: Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (大紅蓮 氷輪丸, Grand Crimson Lotus Ice Ring). Hitsugaya trained extensively following Aizen's defeat and managed to master his Bankai after an eighteen-month time-frame.[205] Due to the manner in which this so-called "completed" form manifests itself, Hitsugaya possesses two Bankai forms. The first covers his shoulders, feet and right-arm with ice, with large ice-wings sprouting from his back.[206] Three large ice-flowers also float in the air behind him which,[207] according to false information, indicated how long he could maintain his Bankai state.[208] In actuality the flowers function as the countdown before Hitsugaya can use his completed Bankai.[209]
- Bankai Special Abilities: Hitsugaya's Bankai greatly augments his abilities to freeze objects,[210] to the point his tail becomes a potent weapon unto itself.[211] He can instantly freeze the moisture in the air and launch it towards his opponents in the form of ice daggers,[212] or as waves of crescent-shaped icicles,[213] whose direction can be controlled at will even after the initial attack.[213] His wings also double as a potent defensive tool, allowing him to shield himself and allies from dangerous attacks. They also double as a means of heightened mobility.[214] Due to the nature of Daiguren Hyōrinmaru it is one of the few Bankai that can be repaired once broken. All Hitsugaya requires is time to completely restore any damage he sustains, for as long as there is water in the atmosphere he can repair his Bankai indefinitely.[215]
- Zanhyō Ningyō (残氷人形, Lingering Ice Puppet): a clone technique which involves Hitsugaya shaping a large amount of ice into his exact likeness, which even possesses the ability to bleed. It is often only valid for one use.[216]
- Sennen Hyōrō (千年氷牢, Thousand Years' Ice Prison): Hitsugaya creates a large number of ice pillars which slowly encircle his opposition. He then turns his Zanpakutō counter-clockwise, which causes the pillars to encase and crush his opposition. Although considerably powerful it takes a long time to prepare.[218]
- Hollowfied Bankai: Whilst initially believed to be a temporary additive brought about through ingestion of the Shin'eiyaku,[219] Hitsugaya can take on this form at will through usage of his Renkei. He discovered this by accident during a battle with Averian. As the bracelet links to Kenji Hiroshi, who has undergone Hollowfication, Hitsugaya can borrow Kenji's Hollowfied reiatsu in order to enhance Daiguren Hyōrinmaru; as such the Bankai takes on a far darker manifestation.[220] For this very reason he can likewise utilize this form even when his own powers are being held back by way of sealing techniques. The form was powerful enough to completely dominate Cang Du in battle and critically injure him, to such lengths he was forced to retreat.[221] The Hollowfication increases Daiguren Hyōrinmaru's defensive attributes, to such a degree that Cang Du failed to successfully attack Hitsugaya even once.[222] In addition this form is a potent action against any Quincy, as the Hollow reiatsu is like poison to them.[223]
- Hanamoyōjūji (花模様十字, Floral Pattern Cross): Hitsugaya, pointing his Zanpakutō out before him at his foe, encases his opposition in a massive cross-shaped ice-tomb, which he states is Hyōrinmaru's emblem.[224] The power of this technique is enough to defeat and incapacitate Cang Du despite the latter having suffered very few injuries prior to Hitsugaya resorting to the use of this technique.[221] It took the activation of Cang Du's Quincy: Vollständig just to shatter the ice, demonstrating just how powerful it is.[225] Even in light of this the lingering damage caused forced him to retreat to the Wandenreich headquarters, where he was judged to have lost.[226]
- Completed Bankai: Hitsugaya eventually mastered his Bankai through a combination of self-imposed training on his own, and with help from Hiyori Sarugaki,[105] Kenji Hiroshi and Kusaka Kori.[119] When he enters this state he loses his ice wings, instead having ice covering his shoulders, forearms, and knees. When used during the Blood War he took on the appearance of a lanky, older young man.[227] This maturation is no longer necessary and is instead marked by the disappearance of the ice petals and ice wings.[228]
- Flash Freezing: Hitsugaya can flash-freeze incredibly large objects, such as Gerard Valkyrie, with a mere hand-gesture whilst at range. This likewise extends to anything cut by his sword. In addition anything frozen by this effect has its power, including high-speed regeneration, completely negated.[229] Merely touching Hitsugaya whilst he is in this state will result in the person being frozen as well.[230]
- Shikai Hyōketsu (四界氷結, Four World Freeze): After merely four seconds of charge-time, Hitsugaya can forcibly freeze anything before him regardless of form or power.[231] Before the revelation that only celestial beings or objects could kill Averian or his Battle Dolls, this was one of the few techniques at the Ryū Order's disposal that could accomplish the feat during the First Spiritual War. Post-Collapse Hitsugaya was even capable of invoking this technique in a limited fashion without releasing his completed Bankai.[17]
Relationships and affiliations[]
Relationships[]
Sōjirō Kusaka[]
- Main article -- Sōjirō Kusaka.
Hitsugaya and Kusaka formed a lasting friendship in a short period of time; Hitsugaya struggled to make friends all his life, with many his own age shying away from him in fear. His prodigious abilities served to hinder his ability to make lasting friendships as well, though this was not the case with Kusaka, who became Hitsugaya's close friend and only rival of note. The pair ended up being pitted against each other because of an ancient Soul Society law that prevented two individuals wielding the same Zanpakutō. Kusaka attacked his friend and was subsequently slain by the Onmitsukidō.[3]
Hitsugaya later temporarily left the ranks of the Gotei 13 when it became clear that Kusaka had survived, and embarked on a journey to discover his former friends intentions. The two ended up pitted against one another once more when Kusaka made it clear he wanted to destroy the Gotei 13, which went against Hitsugaya's sense of duty. After seemingly killing Kusaka the two former friends forgave one another and reconciled, though Hitsugaya was haunted by his friends supposed death.
Kenji Hiroshi[]
- Main article -- Kenji Hiroshi.
Hitsugaya shares a notable bond with Kenji that is reciprocated fully on both sides. The pair first met during the incident involving the Ōin and the reappearance of Sōjirō Kusaka, where Kenji found Hitsugaya in a critically injured state and treated his wounds.[54] Kenji stuck by Hitsugaya throughout this incident once it became clear that he wasn't going to relent, and even protected Hitsugaya from Sōjirō's Arrancar underlings.[55] Kenji went so far as to enlist the aid of Anika Shihōin to clear Hitsugaya's name and enable him to return to the Gotei 13, which Hitsugaya acknowledged before crossing blades with Sōjirō personally.[58] Hitsugaya silently thanks Kenji for his assistance and puts in a word with the Captain-Commander, which results in Kenji no longer being hunted by the Gotei 13.[59]
Over the years the pair continued to have meetings. Hitsugaya came to Kenji for assistance prior to the war with Aizen's Arrancar to enlist Kenji's experience fighting Arrancar, and asked if Kenji would consider returning to the Gotei 13. Kenji refuses to help the Gotei 13 but agrees to help Hitsugaya himself.[28] Kenji proceeds to spar with Hitsugaya using his Hollow mask, revealing himself as a Visored to the young Captain in the process.[81] Before they part ways once more Kenji reveals Hitsugaya to have eroded his earlier refusal, and states that he will be leading a reserve force to support the Gotei 13 in the coming war.[81]
Throughout the war with Averian, Hitsugaya actually left his post in the Gotei 13 to fight at Kenji's side. He became a lasting member of the Ryū Guard and was one of only two people -- the other being Van Satonaka -- who was aware of Kenji's plan to fake his death and then finalise his Yuengiri training.[11] Following The Collapse he was one of only two individuals to possess a Renkei which enabled one to communicate with Kenji,[17] which was the same bracelet given to him by Kenji just months prior to the Quincy Blood War.[117] During the Blood War Kenji initially showed little interest, but later took a direct hand in the battles when members of the Visored and Hitsugaya where endangered.[119] He kept Hitsugaya alive after his battle with Cang Du,[138] and then directly aided him in the battle against Gerard Valkyrie. Throughout the two demonstrated practised back-and-forth banter.[155]

Naoko Izuru[]

Although he rarely interacted with Naoko personally, Hitsugaya remained interested in her development and well-being, especially true following Momo's sudden death. Hitsugaya is very protective of Naoko as a result; it is no exaggeration to say that swift reprisal awaits any who harm her when Hitsugaya happens to be nearby.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya appears as a minor character in the historic opening segment of Bleach: The 3rd Phantom and as a supporting character during the events of Bleach: Resurgent Phantom, which is set one-hundred years on from his appearance in Bleach: The 3rd Phantom. In the former he appeared as a child living in the Rukongai with Momo Hinamori prior to his acceptance into the Shinō Academy. In the latter he appears as the Captain of the 10th Division with Rangiku Matsumoto as his Lieutenant. The events of Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion are alluded to during the post-game thirty-floor Tower segment in Bleach: The 3rd Phantom, and are thus accepted as canon for this version of Hitsugaya.
Behind the Scenes[]
- This version of Tōshirō Hitsugaya uses a modified history that blends canon events with a number of non-canon events, whilst staying true to the events of the former. It borrows elements from The DiamondDust Rebellion film, the 3rd Phantom video-game, as well as purely fanon-elements to provide a more expansive back-story. Hitsugaya, alongside the Visored, essentially serve as the vocal point between established canon and Kenji-Taichō's fanon storyline. This is achieved through several "inquels" -- a story that takes place during a gap in some other story's narrative -- which runs alongside both canon and fanon, essentially tying the events together.
- An example of the above is when Hitsugaya is found by Ichigo Kurosaki in DiamondDust Rebellion. He is instead treated by Kenji Hiroshi, who proceeds to help him resolve his personal matter, with this event serving as an origin-story of sorts to explain how the two met. It also sets up Sōjirō Kusaka as a recurring antagonist. Another example are a series of shorts -- dubbed inquels -- which run throughout the Quincy Blood War, showing Kenji working behind the scenes to aid Hitsugaya and others, before intervening directly near the end of the battle with Gerard Valkyrie. These shorts run in parallel to already released chapters of the canon manga.
- Hitsugaya, according to Gin Ichimaru, is the embodiment of a heavenly guardian that would be reincarnated every few centuries. This statement was tied into the Tenjin concept created by APS and is used partly as a means of explaining Hitsugaya's prodigious abilities.
- The version of Hitsugaya depicted in Bleach: Resurgent Phantom is slightly different to the Hitsugaya depicted in the main segments above. This mostly boils down to powers and abilities however, though certain aspects of their history are different. Hitsugaya's role in the events surrounding Sōjirō Kusaka remain identical to the events depicted in the film; the Hitsugaya above uses a modified re-telling of the story that includes not only Kenji Hiroshi replacing Ichigo Kurosaki but also the Kyūtai.
