The Soul Fragments (霊欠, Reiketsu) is a term coined by Soul Society to refer to the parts of Yhwach's soul that were spread throughout the Human World following his defeat at the end of the Thousand Year Blood War. Distributed in roughly even amounts, the 12th Division of the Gotei 13 has estimated there to be precisely seventeen fragments (thirty-three in actuality) somewhere in the world of the living but there appears to be some form of interference that prevents them from picking up specific locations. These fragments have entered into the bodies of particular humans and merged with their souls, granting certain individuals supernatural powers.

History[]

When Yhwach was defeated by Ichigo Kurosaki, the latter had separated parts of his soul from his body, scattering them throughout The World of the Living calling these separated parts Soul Fragments.

Overview[]

Very little information is known about the fragments other than that once they fall into the body of a random target, the fragment slowly resonates with their soul and eventually merges together with it, enhancing the soul by a significant degree. However, the changes present themselves differently in every individual, but there are certain facts regarding these fragments that Mayuri Kurotsuchi has determined to be crucial information about the fragments.

  • The fragments are pieces of the Quincy King, Yhwach, soul and bestow upon their target new abilities that are completely random and impossible to predict.
  • There are precisely seventeen fragments and all seventeen have found their way into residents of the Human World.
  • Quincy are beings instinctively drawn to reishi, for it is in their spiritual nature to utilize it as a means of survival, and therefore, they are drawn to areas with high concentrations of spiritual energy; hence why many of the prestigious Quincy family survivors, such as the Kurosaki and the Ishida, both took up residence in Karakura Town, which is the Jūreichi. In each individual, due to the origin of the fragments being Quincy, they are bestowed upon with a newly-formed instinct to be drawn toward places of high spiritual power; which factors heavily into Kraven's plans.

Unbeknownst to the Soul Society at the time, who had assumed that there were a total of seventeen fragments, the truth is that there was actually a grand total of thirty-three that made their way into the Human World. However, at the time that they became aware of the situation, only seventeen were still regarded as being active, as sixteen have been found and captured by the Coven.
