"The serpent who ate the fruit will face Death as punishment."
Shuya Yoruhisa (夜久国見, Yoruhisa Shuya) is a member of The Guard and is in possession of one of Kisuke Urahara's lost Reishi Visualization Charms. He is second-in-command behind Seiji Kanajo, but appears to act as if he's the one actually calling the shots. No one really seems to trust him.
Appearance[]
Shuya is a pale young man with brown eyes and short brown hair dyed blond that spikes outward at the bottom. He wears a white shirt with mid-length sleeves, an orange neckerchief, and brown vest. He also has tan pants tucked into brown boots with a loose belt. His Reishi Visualization Charm is worn as crossed bracelets on his right wrist.
Personality[]
Shuya initially appears as a quirky man with a sense of humor, immediately joking with Yorito upon meeting him. He is incredibly casual, but Yorito notes that he doesn't come off as very approachable. Cynthia even states he's constantly obnoxious. He tends to single out fellow Guard member, Nichiya Dei, as his target to tease and mess with the most due to Nichiya's exaggerated reactions. Despite that, his position as second-in-command and Seiji's supposed right hand man means he has Seiji's full trust and is apparently highly competent despite his flaws.
However, the truth about Shuya is that he is a master manipulator. He made it to second-in-command by winning over Seiji with his words. Shuya can even sway Seiji into taking his preferred course of acting, ultimately making him a bit of a shadow leader for The Guard. Shuya even urges Tsuneo into kidnapping Itsuki and making the Arrancar, Hojan Unomunna, loyal to him instead of Aizen with words alone.
The real Shuya is fascinated with human behavior, especially since he believes he's never been normal. However, he has little actual care or interest in individuals. He finds other people confusing in a way he doesn't believe he could ever understand, but the effort to try anyway is what motivates him. It is also what encouraged him to try to become an anthropologist before dropping out of college.
Despite claiming that he was only using and manipulating Hojan, there is evidence to suggest Shuya did, even if briefly, appear to have some form of genuine care for Hojan.
History[]
Shuya was born to a poor family in Nagoya. He was upfront about his spiritual awareness from a young age, but no one ever believed him. His mother thought something was wrong with him and wanted to get him help, but the family couldn't afford it. His father, on the other hand, urged him to be quiet and acted as if nothing was wrong. Due to his openness, Shuya was treated as an outcast by his peers. He was gossiped about, teased, and bullied, but Shuya never appeared to pay any mind to his mistreatment. Instead, he threw himself into studying and proved to be a brilliant child.
With his mother's encouragement, Shuya applied for a scholarship to attend Kazahana Academy in Hokkaido. She hoped a new location and further focus on studies would help Shuya. While Shuya was successfully able to attend Kazahana Academy, his parents couldn't afford to uproot themselves and move all the way to Hokkaido, so Shuya was sent on his own and got a part-time job at an antique store to help pay for his expenses.
With a fresh start in a new city, Shuya decided to reinvent himself. He put on an act of a friendly, casual boy and was immediately accepted by his new peers. He was silent about the things he could see and tried his best to ignore it. With life finally appearing to become normal for Shuya, he graduated from the academy with the best grades in his class and many friends to celebrate with him.
At the start of his adulthood, Shuya got accepted into Nagano University and intended to become an anthropologist. About halfway into his first year, a Plus was chased onto campus by a Hollow trying to eat them. Shuya, having seen many sights like it before, ignored it. When the Plus ran through a crowd of students, the Hollow simply chose to kill them to get to its prey. While everyone reacted with horror and fled the area, Shuya simply stood there with a blank look on his face. Noticing Shuya was aware of what was really happening, the Plus ran to him for help, but they were attacked by the Hollow in front of him and Shuya simply turned away to leave. When the Hollow turned its attention to Shuya, it was finally defeated by the sudden appearance of a Soul Reaper. As Shuya continued to walk away, the Soul Reaper asked if he could see what happened and Shuya replied with a "no".
The incident was left a mystery to everyone but Shuya, and word was quickly spread by those who witnessed it that Shuya was unfazed by everything that happened in front of him. Rumors spread that maybe he had something to do with it and his reaction, or lack thereof, left people deeply distrubed by him. The opinion of Shuya quickly returned to that of his younger days and he was once again shunned by his peers. Shuya dropped the friendly act he had kept up for many years now and became his old self again. Eventually he was talked to by authorities, who were still looking into the incident, and Shuya momentarily considered saying it was a monster chasing a ghost, but he only said it looked like he had no reaction because he simply froze in fear. Content with his answer, Shuya was left alone by authorities. However, the rumors persisted and ultimately Shuya decided it was best that he drop out.
Instead of returning home to Nagoya, Shuya remained in Fubuki City and became a full time employee at the antique store. He stopped accepting the money his parents sent him and cut off contact with them. When he was twenty-two, he arrived at work to find his boss setting up a new item she had acquired. She showed him the bracelet and said it was claimed to be cursed. Not believing her, Shuya put it on and when nothing happened, he tossed it back to her. Convinced she got tricked, his boss assumed it was worthless and let Shuya have it since she claimed it looked nice on him.
A week later, Shuya was approached by a man taking interest in his bracelet. Shuya said he got it from an antique store and wondered if the man was the original owner. The man denied being so, but said he was looking for it, and whoever currently had it, which would be Shuya. Shuya immediately grew suspicious and the man introduced himself as Seiji Kanajo. Seiji questioned Shuya if he suddenly started seeing strange things since putting on the bracelet. Catching on to what Seiji was implying, Shuya revealed he could always see things, with or without the bracelet. Surprised, Seiji revealed the bracelet, like his own glove, could make that possible for anyone wearing them. He asked that if Shuya didn't need the bracelet, then maybe he'd be interested in simply handing it over. Shuya denied Seiji's offer and questioned what Seiji would even need it for anyway. Seiji explained that the bracelet had another form that could be used to protect people, which was Seiji's intention for all the items like it.
Shuya offered Seiji to follow him into an alley where they could talk more in private. Agreeing to do so, Seiji was immediately by Shuya using the bracelet's lasso form. Questioning what Shuya was doing, he simply explained he was testing it out. Shuya tightened the lasso around Seiji's neck, causing the man to collapse to the ground as he tried to breathe. Shuya questioned what his real goal was and Seiji tried to explain that he was telling the truth--he intended to use the items as a means to protect people from Hollows, the monsters Shuya could see. Shuya wondered why Seiji would want to do something so selfless unless their was something in it for him as well. Seiji then admitted he also wanted to overthrow the corrupt people running Fubuki City, such as the mayor, the cops, and the CEO of Endō Enterprises. Content with that answer, Shuya released Seiji. He refused to hand over the bracelet, but offered to "tag along for the ride". As a means of keeping someone so dangerous in his eyesight, Seiji chose to let Shuya into The Guard.
After the group was barred from using Anosuke's workplace as a headquarters, Shuya suggested moving operations to the backroom of Eden Treasures since the owner trusted him so much.

Tsuneo's Decision Arc[]

When Shuya returns to the World of the Living with Hojan's help a month later, he approaches Tsuneo, knowing the new head of the Endō family needs to be dealt with first. When Tsuneo discovers that the family maid, Mei's, son is actually the illegitimate child of his father and therefore his siblings' little half brother, Tsuneo flies into a rage. Shuya encourages him to take action against the sins of his father, resulting in Tsuneo kidnapping Itsuki.
As everyone tries to save Itsuki from Tsuneo, Shuya reveals that he has managed to return and that he has Hojan under his command.
Shuya and Hojan Arc[]
Growing desperate after Tsuneo is freed from Shuya's manipulation and Itsuki is now safe, Shuya berates Hojan for being useless and claims to Hojan that he was just being manipulated so that Shuya could get what he wanted. The idea that Hojan was lied to and treated like a tool causes the Arrancar to break down and turn on Shuya, stabbing him in the chest. He then collapses from his wound.
Shuya manages to hold on long enough to wake up near the end of the battle against Hojan. He forces himself to get up and find a way to draw Hojan's attention. From the roof of a building, Shuya calls out to Hojan and attempts to apologize, realizing he didn't mean what he said. As Hojan finally hears and believes Shuya, he is stabbed by Kūzen and Kotsuru, who kill him. Distraught, Shuya refuses Chūji's attempts to heal him and wishes to die instead. Izuru Kira complies with his wishes, finishing off the final remains of The Guard.
Echoing Jaws of Hell Arc[]
Shuya was put on trial by Central 46 for his crimes in the World of the Living and, despite not being a Soul Reaper, he was still sentenced to 200 years in the Central Great Underground Prison due to his involvement with an Arrancar. Shuya is seen in his cell completely motionless. When the Beasts of Hell attack Soul Society, Shuya finally looks up at the ceiling, as if sensing something serious is happening above.
Equipment[]
Reishi Visualization Charm: Created by Kisuke Urahara and still in a prototype stage, this device allows anyone in possession of it to become spiritually aware and be able to see Pluses, Hollows, and Soul Reapers. However, it does not allow the owner to detect spiritual pressure. Since it is still a prototype, it does not actually kill Hollows, but simply destabilizes their bodies so they are turned to pure Reishi and then reform later. Shuya's charm takes the form of a black double banded bracelet that forms an X pattern. Its weapon form is that of a lasso, which he uses to hold targets still for his allies to attack. More rarely, Shuya will use it simply to strangle a target to death instead.
Powers & Abilities[]
Spiritual Awareness: Shuya is the only member of The Guard who is naturally spiritually aware and doesn't require a RVC to see Pluses, Hollows, or Soul Reapers. However, his natural awareness is very base level as he can only see things and not sense them.
