Shunpo (瞬歩, Flash Steps) is a movement technique that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow. The art is exclusive to Shinigami and Visored.
Overview[]
For a Shinigami and Visored, Shunpo is the greatest expression of the Hohō technique. However, there are variations even within Shunpo that only master Hohō practitioners can use, or even be aware of. It is a movement technique that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. As speed is the main point of the technique the method is best characterized by how fast one can get from point A to point B in the least amount of steps. Training and skill are what determines how fast a user of Shunpo can move; those of little skill in the technique or those who haven't used it an extended amount of time would obviously be out of practice, causing those individuals to be considerably slower, which requires the use of more steps to move the same distance and become winded far easier in a shorter amount of time.
The Shunpo technique, and by extension the art of Hohō itself, is ingrained within the bones of the Onmitsukidō. Most (if not all) the operatives within the organization itself are Shunpo masters who command tremendous speed and knowledge in the art form, with such individuals as Hissori Hogosha and Blake Shihōin holding both tremendous reflexes and incredible raw speed. Within the Onmitsukidō exists two differing forms of Hohō technique: Onmitsudō (隠密道, Way of Stealth) and Shihōpo (死楓歩, Step of the Dead Maple). The former deals with speed-related techniques that require tremendous aptitude in the Shunpo art, while the latter deals with enhancing the neural synapses of the individual to increase their physical performance greatly for battle. However, although secretive, some have become knowledgeable on these particular techniques.

Shunpo Techniques | ||||||
Gomakashi (ごまかし, "Smoke and Mirrors") | An easily performed Shunpo technique which is usually the first advancement practitioners make in their skills. Gomakashi is taught within the Shinō and Yuengiri Academies as a precursor to more advanced Shunpo skills. Gomakashi involves a basic one-to-three step movement under cover of smoke, which is usually created via Sekienton or, control depending, reiryoku.
Senka (閃花, "Flash Blossom") | A special Shunpo technique where one moves behind the opponent to directly attack and seal one's "Saketsu" (鎖結, Chain Binding) and "Hakusui" (鎖結, Soul Sleep) in two rapid stabs. The movement is so fast that an opponent may not be able to tell whether they were attacked from the front or the back and even an outside observer may find it impossible to tell what the movements are.
Hikarakuyō (飛花落葉, "Blossoms Fall and Leaves Scatter") | A special Shunpo technique where the user, through manipulation of ones spiritual energy flow, accelerates their speed to the point where their movements cause semi-sentient afterimages to form from behind them and continues to follow the user, mimicking their movements entirely. They then continue this enhanced flow for brief periods of time. The user is then able to deceive the opponent of their true position, assaulting them with several attacks at their nervous system from various angles in order for their opponent to be completely incapacitated. |
Onmitsukidō[]
Onmitsudō[]
Onmitsudō is the branch-term for techniques created by and used exclusively by members of the Onmitsukidō, though exceptions do exist. These particular techniques where created by Anīka Shihōin and the Taira Clan, and deal with techniques relating to advanced Shunpo applications beyond the scope of normal Shinigami.

Onmitsudō Techniques | ||||||
Way of Onmitsu, 1st of the Shihō | Shihō no Saisho - Tonbo (死楓の最初•蜻蛉; "First of the Shihō - Dragonfly, referencing their flying"): This technique allows the user to appear at several places at the same time, generating a set number of "speed-clones" depending on their level of mastery. These are indistinguishable from the user's true self and mimic his movements, but generally do not last very long. It is a basic technique, known by all Onmitsukidō members, and has been portrayed namelessly by both Yoruichi Shihōin and Suì-Fēng during their age.
Way of Onmitsu, 3rd of the Shihō | Shihō no San - Utsusemi (空蝉, Cicada, referencing their molting): It allows for a movement at great speed leaving an afterimage behind. The afterimage may even appear to have taken damage. Certain individuals may even be able to apply their elemental reiatsu to the technique, inflicting damage when the afterimage fades.
Way of Onmitsu, 5ft of the Shihō | Hanmyōka (死楓の五•ハンミョウ科; "Fifth of the Shihō - Tiger Beetle, referencing their running"): Speeding up the spiritual flow within their bodies drastically, the user enhances their speed to a point where they become invisible to the naked eye. Motions can only be performed in a straight line and when the user comes to a standing-still, their pathway is torn apart. Visibility for the user during the technique is reduced to near zero, requiring running in short bursts to re-orient themselves as they chase down their target.
Way of Onmitsu, 10th of the Shihō | Shihō no Jū - Kurumushi (死楓の十•車虫; Tenth of the Shihō - Wheel Bug, referencing their way of killing): A particularly cruel technique, which is advised against within the Onmitsukidō due the possible grievous backlash. It consists of a single long "step" extending way past the opponent, yet performed inches near the latter, with the dominant hand held in tegatana position. The said hand cleaves through the air as the movement is performed, and when the user comes to a hold, causes an enormous shockwave to ripple through the pathway in it's wake. Because the hand is designed to be next to the opponent when the technique is utilized, the latter receives the full brunt of this force, capable of completely ripping open the chest area and exposing the vital organs. However, should the opponent side-step in time or the technique simply be performed to far away from the intended victim's body, the user himself receives the impact, although in his back and thus less lethal, but still enough to render him incapable of fighting for a serious period of time. |
Shihōpo[]
Shihōpo is the signature trait of the higher-ranked Onmitsukidō operatives, and is an art of Hohō that is exclusively used within battle; and is remarked by some as the "Art of Assassination" (暗殺術, Ansatsujutsu). It utilizes not simple channeling of reiryoku to the legs, but flow throughout the entire body to enhance the neural synapses of the individual, increasing their entire physical ability tenfold. However; this isn't a sudden burst of spiritual energy, but it is a constant and gradual flow of reiryoku throughout their entire being, and the longer a battle progresses, the greater level of physical ability the practitioner gains. However, the sole detrimental aspect of this is that only beings with truly high levels of spiritual power are capable of utilizing this method of combat for extended periods of time. However; this isn't the core aspect of Shihōpo, but rather, it is meant to shorten the length of a battle as it lengthens, through the various techniques associated with Shihōpo. These techniques are, in fact, those known as the Onmitsudō. This is the case because through every consecutive Onmitsudō technique, there is a need for a higher level of speed and agility, which not every operative of the Onmitsukidō possesses. However; through the use of Shihōpo and the gradual passing of time, there is a lack of necessity for such fast movement, though skill is always necessary.
