The Shinrinchitai Family (森林地帯, Shinrinchitai; Japanese for "Woodland") is the only named, as well as the oldest, clan of the Arcanists, a race of Shinigami that possess elemental powers. The history of the Shinrinchitai goes back more than twenty millions of years before the beginning of Bleach. However, all information before Commander-General Yamamoto's founding of the Shinō Academy is very limited. They are, by far, the most secretive of the Arcanists, as they rarely let others know if they are a member of the family. Unlike all other Arcanist clans, the Shinrinchitai do not allow others to learn their special collaboration element, wood. Due to this, the use of this element is impossible for outsiders. While they use to be a very prominent clan within the Soul Society, the entire clan was massacred by their youngest member, Seimei Shinrinchitai. After the massacre, Seimei went underground, causing many to believe that he was dead as well.
