Ren Nakatani (中谷蓮, "Water Lily of the Central Valley") is a Sōzōshin and a member of the ancient Balancers of Souls. She serves as the Colonel of the Detention Corps under Mamoru Nakatani, her older brother.
Appearance[]
Ren is a relatively tall woman of slender but toned build, who appears to be in her late twenties. She has long and spiky light blond hair which she styles in a ponytail, and bright, emerald eyes. Her face features are attractive and well-proportioned, but somewhat firm.
She wears a white tank top, red vest, white baggy trousers and yellow hard-cuffed boots. Similarly to her brother, she also dons a set of jewellery, but with emerald gems.
Personality[]
In stark contrast to Mamoru, Ren is a rather conceited and easily irritable person. The pride she has in being descended from a noble family results in her outward arrogance, and she is quick to lose temper whenever something happens against her wishes. Still, she can interact with her allies fairly well most of the time, as she reserves the majority of her negative behaviour for potential enemies. Unlike her brother, who habitually conceals his contempt under the guise of purely verbal politeness, Ren is much more explicit in her displays of condescension.

Enhanced Strength: Ren is a very strong person who uses her Reiatsu to boost her already adequate musculature. She is powerful enough to block attacks with just a single arm. Enhanced Durability: In addition, her resistance to damage is also above the average even for a trained spiritual being. Keen Tactician: Although only the deputy commander of the Detention Corps, Ren is an astute military leader. Thanks to her above average intellect and experience from putting down numerous prisoner rebellions she has remarkable knowledge about defensive tactics. Whilst usually the one to defend, she is skilled sufficiently to swiftly assume the role of the attacker during the Balancer invasion on the Wandenreich. As a result, Nakatani was able to methodically destroy an organised line of defence and sow disorder amongst the enemy ranks[1]. | |

Master Swordsman: Nakatani's skill in sword-fighting is on an inarguably masterful level. Well-trained and experienced in fighting with a pair of the unusual chicken sickles, she is more than capable of wielding those awkward weapons with lethal proficiency. Most frequently, she employs relentless sallies and jabs with the pointy ends and inflicts deep, debilitating cut wounds with the sharp hooks of the sickles. Whenever she confronts an opponent who wields bladed weapons, she can use her Jiūkǔndao to force them aside with one sickle and immediately strike with the second one[1]. Furthermore, she seems to favour a wide variety of broad slashes and spinning attacks often conducted with the support of her Jiūkǔndao's special ability that distorts the enemy's perception[2]. Hakuda Expert: She is a very proficient unarmed combatant. Her fighting style involves numerous throws, sallies and broad kicks and punches whose main function is to quickly incapacitate the enemy. She is skilled enough to employ such manoeuvres in the middle of a sword fight. Shunpo Master: With a toned and lithe frame, Ren is a very agile and fast fighter. Her speed is noticeably higher than that of an average Shinigami Captain. As such, she may swiftly perform acrobatic manoeuvres in the thick of battle[2]. Kadō Expert: Nakatani has an ample knowledge of the ancient Kadō spells. Similarly to her elder brother, she specialises in Fire and Underworld fields. Together with Máo Yǒng she helped him release Black from its gargantuan shackles[3], and during the Balancer incursion on the Soul Society she contributed to the barrage of fireballs with her own spells[1]. Great Spiritual Power: Because she is a Sōzōshin, Ren was born with a naturally high level of energy, far surpassing that of most Shinigami. In fact, her Reiryoku reservoir is noticeably larger than that of an average Shinigami Captain. Her Reiatsu colour is royal blue. | |

Hyeongi (현기, "Vertigo"): takes the appearance of a pair of chicken sickles with golden blades and dark red hilts. Emeralds are embedded in the bases of each blade.
Shìfàng: Mujilseo (무질서, "Disorder"): Like every Shìfàng, this state may be activated only when the wielder is in a critical condition, usually in a state resembling the moment of their death when applicable. The Balancer uniform that Ren normally wears is replaced with elegant dress-like clothing with golden and royal blue spiral patterns. Her chicken sickles undergo a considerable change as well. Their blades become elongated, curved and serrated so that they resemble actual sickles to a much greater extent. Her enhanced spiritual pressure assumes the form of a tempest of violently swirling energy.
