- "Flames. Fifteen million degrees... There's no way such immense heat would be visible as flames... Is this an illusion? Wait. Perhaps the actual power of his reiatsu is so overwhelming... that the overflowing spiritual energy appears like a flame."
- —Jugram Haschwalth commenting on Yamamoto's Bankai.[1]

Reiki (霊氣, "Spirit Breath"), also known as Aura, is the energy that exists between souls; born of interaction and interconnection. All entities in this world possess some measure of a soul and an energy is given off whenever these souls interact with one another. It can be given off by the actions of living beings, thoughts and emotions, natural processes, or even the movement and presence of inanimate objects. Even Reiatsu itself exudes a Reiki. It is a concept that has fallen out of use in the Soul Society, though many Hakuda masters still utilize it as an inherent principle of their martial arts. It is the mastery and utilization of Reiki that allows Hakuda masters to achieve supernatural feats akin to Kidō.
Overview[]
All things in the world are interconnected. It is not by some mystical presence or otherworldly force, but by the mundane and simple understanding that everything is always in a constant state of interaction with something else. Rocks on the ground interact with the earth below them upon which they sit, the air that blows around them that they resist against, all without intention or action. Muscles within the body move together to perform a joint feat of movement. Spiritual pressure is exerted from the body of a soul and permeates to the surroundings. Simply by coexisting do all these phenomena interact, and the energy given off by their interaction is what is called Reiki. Seireitou Kawahiru has described it as something that is not special by any means; everything has it, everyone can feel it, and it exists everywhere. Because it is not special, it can be anything, because it belongs to everything; even the innately intangible. Thoughts, intentions, and emotions also possess Reiki. The energy given off by thinking or experiencing something is different depending on its nature, and from that energy, one can interpret the sensation associated with it. Its name was said to be based on the most important interaction that is necessary for life; breath. When living beings breathe in the air and exhale, this is an interaction between themselves and the world around them that permits life to exist. There are as many ways to breathe as there are forms of life.
The term Reiki itself was one originating from the Old World. When the Soul Society came to be, it fell out of disuse with the Shinigami, and eventually became nothing but an ancient philosophy. Even in the Human World, the idea of Reiki is defined differently and known by many different names depending on the culture, but all of their interpretations only constitute a small piece of the greater picture. However, some remnants of its original concept still linger in different modern ideas. According to Seireitou, the way Reikaku is used is very reminiscent to the act of detecting Reiki. When you can pick up on emotional fluctuations in someone's reiatsu would be a case of perceiving what is called Reiki. The same goes for when one is able to notice the push and pull of another's reiatsu or when they notice the wavering of their hakudō. Similarly, the view of all things having some measure of a soul, which is inherently tied to the use of Fullbring, is also a foundation of Reiki itself. The idea behind it stems from the belief that because everything possesses some degree of a soul, even inanimate objects, everything has the innate capacity for interaction.
Reiatsu has a unique connection with Reiki. Because Reiki is the energy given off during interaction, when reiatsu is exerted onto something, its Reiki can take on different presences and forms depending on its intention. The fear felt by an intimidating reiatsu is due to the Reiki transmitting the malevolent intent of its wielder. Due to being spiritual in nature rather than physical, changes in the Reiki of reiatsu manifest as tangible changes to its overall nature. When Yhwach fought against Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, it was noted by Jugram Haschwalth that the immense heat generated by the Bankai could not possibly manifest as flames. Instead, he understood this to be the appearance taken by Yamamoto's overwhelming reiatsu in the Bankai state.[1] Similarly, when Ulquiorra Cifer released his Resurrección against Ichigo Kurosaki, his reiatsu took on the form of a downpour of black rain to symbolize the notion of despair; despite it not actually being liquid.[2]

Behind the Scenes[]
This concept is based upon the idea of Ki, though the author has taken personal liberties to create a more unique concept that fits within the Bleach universe. Many of the ideas presented here have been inspired from media franchises such as Black Clover, Hunter x Hunter, and Star Wars. The term for this article is derived from Reiki, an esoteric form of healing originating in the field of alternative medicine.
