Reii (霊威, "Spirit Class"; lit. "Spiritual Authority") is a system of Reiatsu measurement originally utilized by the nobles. It represents the concentration of Reiatsu within the Reishi that comprises a Shinigami's body. The more powerful an individual's Reii is, the lower the number of classification. For example, lieutenants in the Gotei 13 vary between Reii class 4 or 5, while average division members are typically class 20.
Those with a Reii of rank 3 or higher, such as captains, have Reishi too dense to break down naturally and return to the soil of Soul Society after death. Since it is dangerous to allow class 3 or higher Reishi to remain in the Soul Society, the Konsō Reisai ceremony is performed, which casts the bodies of deceased captains into Hell.[1]
