Quodrak Verros (クォドラック・ベロス, Kuodorakku Berosu) is a male Arrancar. Formerly a Números and a rank-and-file member of Sōsuke Aizen's Arrancar Army, then a Soldat recruited by the Wandenreich, he now serves as an assassin of the First Sky.

Appearance[]

Quodrak is an exceptionally tall and lean Caucasian male seemingly in his early 30s. While clearly human-like in stature, there is a number of distinct traits that together contribute to his somewhat extraordinary appearance, stemming likely from his status as a low-rank Arrancar. He is unhealthily thin and frail-looking considering his height, and what little body he has consists mostly of sinewy muscles. More importantly, though, his limbs are grossly out of proportion with the rest of his body, elongated to the point that they look almost like stilts. In addition, he possesses ulnar polydactyly: both of his hands exhibit one supernumerary, completely functional finger each.

His short, ash blond hair are styled in a flattop, a type of crew cut where the hair on the top of the head is graduated in length from the front hairline back through the crown, forming a flat deck. The hair on the sides and the back of his head is tapered short. The haircut is slightly unkempt, as several loose strands of hair usually hang above his high, prominent forehead. The hairline is somewhat receded, displaying the initial stages of a widow's peak.

The features of Verros' face are sharp and slightly disproportionate, giving off a feeling of discomfort that is difficult to describe by most of the potential observers. He has a smooth forehead, prominent supraorbital ridges with no eyebrows to speak of, high, protruding cheekbones and a wide, rather squarish jaw. The eyes are relatively large, uniformly pitch black and glossy. His nose is quite large and aquiline, and there is a small mole located on his left cheek. His mouth is unnervingly wide, with rows of pearl white, square teeth hidden behind thin and almost scar-like lips usually extended in a disturbing absent-minded smile. The remnants of his Hollow mask are two mandible-like bone structures framing his face and protruding forward. On the other hand, the location of his Hollow hole is currently unknown.

Quodrak's typical clothing consists of a form-fitting variant of dark purple robes commonly worn by members of the First Sky, complete with a hood and a cape. One notable modification includes a number of changes to its dimensions in order to accomodate the Arrancar's uncommon figure. He tends to wear a pair of sunglasses at virtually all times to conceal his eyes. In addition, he usually dons a pair of white gloves with only five fingers each.

Personality[]

In short, Quodrak might be summed up as a very peculiar person. He is a secretive, socially awkward man who seems to actively avoid the company of others. Taciturn, he speaks very rarely of his own volition, and whenever addressed directly responds in an informative, but succint, austere even, manner. Generally, he treats his superiors and peers in a gentle, polite and respectful way. He does not question orders and skilfully steers clear from expressions and situations that could potentially cause a conflict. In spite of his unusual visage, he is quite adept at avoiding excessive attention, but every time he is drawn into a conversation, he has little trouble withdrawing unnoticed at the closest opportunity. Whilst unwilling to spend time with the Mages when he has a choice, he seems to hang around the few Arrancar in their ranks most of the time. Even though he seldom joins them in their activities, he may be sometimes seen watching or following them at a safe distance, at least when he lets himself be seen.

Verros tends to stay at the sidelines of any significant events. He much prefers to observe things rather than participate actively, allowing him to react in the most logical and efficient manner possible when necessary. He is an expert onlooker and infiltrator, since he is capable of entering normally inaccessible places with little difficulty and no consequences despite his low-level clearance. He traverses the spacious rooms and halls of the Wandenreich Headquarters with a swift, shuffling gait, sticking to badly-lit corners and often disappearing in shadowed places only to reemerge elsewhere without a warning.

His constant wide and absent-minded smile is rather off-putting to most, and helps him discourage people from approaching him. When someone keeps staring at him for a while, he habitually feigns ignorance only to suddenly turn to the individual with an unnerving grin outstretched on his peculiar face. From time to time wrinkles apear on his high forehead, indicating some sort of deep deliberation which topics he does not reveal to anyone, even his Arrancar brethren.

Quodrak does not talk about himself and is prone to swiftly changing the subject when questioned about personal matters. During the rare occasions he is directly engaged in a prolonged conversation, some of his other, typically hidden traits might emerge. In fact, he is a smug and cynical person with a sour sense of humour. Deceptive and manipulative, he deliberately maintains his somewhat unassuming image in order to facilitate his scheming. Unknown to most of his comrades and especially superiors, he is extremely ambitious and plans to gradually increase both his power and status. He acts in a stealthy, very careful manner and frequently achieves his goals under the pretense of loyally serving whoever is his supposed master at the moment. The truth is, he does not respect any authority but his own, but acts the way he does in order to escape notice. Those few who have managed to expose his true motifs, one way or another, all disappeared under unclear circumstances shortly afterward, keeping his schemes secret for the time being.

Amongst the plethora of more or less ordinary personality traits and habits, Verros has a distinct speech quirk: he tends to end many of his utterances with quick clicking of his tongue, sometimes followed by what appears to be an involuntary twitch of the right eye. The habit may not show up when he speaks only one word or sometimes even a full sentence, but otherwise persists throughout extended conversations as well. While bewildering to his interlocutors, Quodrak himself is ostensibly unaware of the quirk and refuses to speak about it when questioned.

Plot[]

Powers and Abilities[]

Natural Abilities

Master Swordsman: Quodrak displays an atypical and highly unconventional style of sword fighting, seemingly one of his own design. He fights primarily with the use of two standard katana with expert dexterity. His technique consists mostly of rapid jabs and sallies intended to impale the enemy whilst rendering the efforts to defend from them more difficult than a more standard style of combat. Moreover, he is also prone to push the opponents with a series of swift, broad and ostensibly chaotic slashes, weaving a metaphorical "web" with the tips of the swords that simultaneously constitutes his means of protection. In general, the technique relies heavily upon abrupt precision strikes and attacks incessantly conducted from erratic, unpredictable angles. As a result, Verros is often able to circumvent conventional defences and decrease the influence of the enemy's potentially greater strength. More than that, he has adapted this peculiar form of combat to exploit the increased amount of blades he can wield in Resurrección as well.

Enhanced Strength: Even though he appears to be physically frail, his thin, sinewy muscles grant him a deceptive degree of physical strength. Noticeably stronger than an average Shinigami, he might incapacitate or even kill weaker enemies just with his physical might alone.

Enhanced Endurance: While far from being inexhaustible Quodrak does display an above-average level of endurance nevertheless. Combined with his energy efficient approach to battle that also incorporates elements of stealth and deception, he is capable of fighting for a long period of time. In the rare event he is forced to go all out he may still keep up a high performance for some time before the sheer ferocity of his swordsmanship depletes his stamina.

Highly Perceptive Combatant: He possesses an extremely acute eyesight, which helps him notice minor details that would normally escape the notice of many other beings. In addition, he can use it in conjuction with his exceptional awareness of the surroundings to exploit and turn them against a potential adversary. As a result, it is very hard to ambush him or set up a trap in which he would fall, unless done willingly to trick the opponent.

Immense Speed & Reflexes: Presumably thanks to the many traits of arachnids he has assumed after becoming a Hollow, Quodrak possesses a degree of awareness and reaction time bordering on precognition. Consequently, it is very difficult to successfully ambush him or connect an abrupt attack, because for as long as he is physically capable of outpacing the attacker, he will detect and evade the attempt with ostensible nonchalance.

Expert Infiltrator: He has easy time staying unnoticed and accessing normally forbidden or unreachable places. In spite of his abnormal appearance, he is skilled at avoiding attention and using the surroundings to his advantage, keeping himself hidden whenever he wishes to. Thanks to his sickeningly flexible body and the ability to thoroughly supress his spiritual pressure, he can stay undetected even right under someone's very nose. Still, he may be found out by particularly perceptive individuals, and as such tends to stay away from them.

Wall-Walking: In addition, he has a habit of casually traversing vertical and upside-down surfaces, simply walking on them in the exact same manner one would on flat ground. This ability does not seem to require much focus or effort from him, seeing as he is able to easily utilise it even in the thick of battle. While virtually useless outdoors under most circumstances, it provides a slight edge when fighting in confined spaces, where he might use his greater mobility to outmanoeuvre or surprise his opponents.

Reishi Web: Yet another unique ability at Verros' disposal is to produce and control webs composed of Reishi. Usually excreted through his fingertips, he may extend and direct their strings in order to slow down or even ensnare an enemy during combat, or prepare a trap beforehand, just like a real spider would. The threads are surprisingly durable and rather difficult to remove, even more so due to their acidic properties which cause more harm as the entangled victim attempts to escape. Furthermore, as long as Quodrak maintains direct contact with the web, he might utilise it to syphon spiritual energy from the enemy.

High Spiritual Power: Quodrak has never been a remarkably strong spiritual entity, beginning his existence as a Hollow with a very modest amount of spiritual power. However, due to his ability to syphon Reiryoku from other beings, he is capable of permanently increasing his own power. Throughout the entirety of his relatively short life as a Hollow he has been slowly, but methodically augmenting his reservoir of spiritual energy. At present, he boasts a high amount of internal spiritual power, comparable to that of an average Lieutenant of the Gotei 13. His Reiatsu feels "stinging" to others when exerted, and may envelop his body with a "stringy" aura. It has a distinct mantis green hue.

  • Expert Reiatsu Control: Having to cope with modest spiritual power in comparison to Espada, as well as being a cunning combat pragmatist, Quodrak has trained the ability to mould and suppress his spiritual pressure with remarkable precision. There are many ways in which he may conceal or project his Reiatsu in order to confuse and trick his enemies. More than that, with skilful application he can augment his physical strikes or even generate blades of highly condensed Reishi.
Arrancar Powers and Abilities

Hierro: This is a passive property of the Arrancar that does not need conscious effort to be maintained. The individual's Reiryoku is relatively condensed, resulting in a kind of a "force field" that hampers many means of dealing damage, both physical and Reiatsu-based. As such, Quodrak may confront low-level opponents without the need to actively protect himself from harm. Still, the magnitude of the defence depends on the individual, and as his Hierro does not particularly stand out for someone of his level, he must avoid taking direct damage from stronger enemies.

Pesquisa: A peculiar perception technique exclusive to Arrancar. Quodrak uses it by concentrating and sending out a radiating pulse through his Reiatsu, which then reacts to other sources of Reiatsu within a certain proximity. The ability allows the practitioner to determine an approximate location of any sensed individuals and provide some insight as to their level of power. Verros often utilises Pesquisa from a safe location before he engages an opponent.

Bala: This relatively simple technique is used as a means of ranged offence. Quodrak condenses his Reiatsu around any of his hands and then launches it in the form of an energy projectile by propelling it with a rapid motion of the arm. The ensuing blast, while not really powerful, is very swift and abrupt, allowing him to strike his enemies without giving them time to block or dodge. Verros most often uses the technique with both of his hands, firing long, rapid bursts to overwhelm the adversary with sheer numbers and ferocity.

Cero: Much more potent, beam variant of the Bala blast. Quodrak lifts both of his arms outstretched and holds them to the front, parallel to each other. Then, he focuses his spiritual energy in-between his palms. After a few moments of charging, the energy is subsequently discharged forward in a column of green Reiatsu that explodes violently on impact. Due to the nature of the attack, Verros seldom uses it as it is not compatible with his preferred fighting style. Nevertheless, he will resort to fire a Cero if the current enemy cannot be dispatched through his usual methods.

Garganta: Even lowly Hollows can summon special gateways in order to travel between Hueco Mundo and other realms at will. The Garganta, as it is known, requires a rudimentary skill in controlling the flow of Reishi to maintain and stabilise the portal whilst in transit. Verros is a competent user of the technique, using it adeptly to retreat from an inconvenient situation or even to ambush an unsuspecting victim, since he is capable of opening the Garganta in a nearly inaudible manner. However, due to the focus required to utilise the ability with such precision, he cannot use it too often within a short frame of time or under high stress.

High-Speed Regeneration: This is one of the signature traits of low- and mid-level Hollows that greatly increases their survivability. Should one inflict a wound to a Hollow, they might soon find, much to their chagrin, that the damage regenerates on its own within a period as short as several seconds. Most light and moderate injuries, including abrasions, lacerations, stab wounds, and burns, can be healed with little difficulty. Even severe blunt trauma can be quickly negated, however, such grievous wounds like lost limbs take considerably longer to regenerate. Quodrak has retained this ability after his conversion into an Arrancar, a rarity. Whenever he is heavily injured, white, liquid-like growth emerges from the wound to cover and heal it at short notice, whilst removed appendages sprout from large, swollen blisters.

Sonído Expert: A natural and apparently instinctual ability of all Arrancar, it allows for far faster movement than what would be normally possible. Whilst similar to Hohō, it produces a louder, static-like sound when used and seems to possess some different properties. Quodrak is an adept user, most frequently employing it in an attempt to outmanoeuvre and confuse his enemies by rapidly changing his location with no discernible pattern. He seems to be skilled in the art sufficiently to keep up with combatants such as Shinigami Lieutenants.

Zanpakutō

Araña (アーラニア, Spanish for "Spider"): Quodrak's Zanpakutō is one of the rare type that exist as a set of two separate weapons in the sealed state. His weapons are fairly standard katana with tsuba in the shape of rounded octagons and black hilts adorned with white circles. Unlike most Shinigami and Arrancar, he normally carries the swords in an x-shaped scabbard on his back.

  • Resurrección: The release command is "Ensnare" (陥れる, otoshīreru). Verros crosses both of his arms across his chest and holds the katana vertically. After he recites the command, white fluid begins to secrete from his skin, covering most of his upper body and solidifying into a sort of bone-like light armour. More importantly, a distinct hump forms on his back, which then promptly sprouts two sets of extremely long, thin arms. It is worth noting that their hands sport six fingers each just like his normal ones. The remains of Quodrak's mask grow to cover the top of his head in a helmet-like fashion, his mandibles become slightly larger, and six additional, pitch black eyes form on his forehead.
Resurrección Special Ability: The transformation augments Verros' overall power and endows him with a few new abilities.
  • Enhanced Durability: The armour plates composed of a bone-like substance act as a means of actual protection and let Quodrak completely shrug off light attacks. Whereas they will break under sufficient pressure, any fissures and dents will regenerate as long he has enough energy left for the process to take place. This is an important aspect of Verros' Resurrección that supplements his Hierro, because he is not particularly durable otherwise.
  • Bone Blades: The two katana wielded by Quodrak vanish upon transformation. However, he might quickly produce spear-like bone blades from glands located at his wrists, made from the same material as his armour. They are rather tough and sharp, serving as a functional replacement for his more conventional sealed state weapons. It is worth noting that any and all of the Resurrección's six arms might create those blades, and Verros is capable of fighting with all of them at the same time, using his usual fighting style and the numerous weapons to cut the enemy to ribbons in a tempest of swirling blades. When one of them is broken, he can promptly form a replacement.
    • Reishi Staves: While highly adept at wielding several blades at a time, even with his natural adroitness Quodrak has to admit that there are certain pertinent limitations he cannot overcome. To that effect, he developed a distinct fighting style that may prove significantly more lethal to an unwary opponent. Rather than produce a few separate blades, Verros generates two long staves with thick hilts and two thin spiky blades each. Subsequently, he coalesces Reishi upon the spikes to form humming energy blades. He wields each staff in one pair of his auxiliary arms to exploit their reach and dexterity in a veritable spectacle of whirring death. With a combination of surprisingly strong swings and spinning attacks he may overwhelm the defences of a singular enemy or successfully engage multiple opponents at the same time. The energy reinforces his blades so that they may reliably clash with spiritual weapons.
  • Enhanced Reishi Web: When in the transformed state, he might use an improved variant of his regular Reishi Web. Now produced by the glands located on all of his wrists, the strings of the web are more durable and faster to produce. In addition to their normal properties, the threads can be swiftly hardened as well, enhancing their incapacitating ability.
  • Bala Araña (Spanish for "Spider Bullets"): Since all of his six arms are completely functional, Verros can utilise them to fire a far greater amount of Bala blasts than would be normally possible. Such a sustained barrage is obviously more difficult to block or evade, and the fact that Quodrak is able to move each arm independently further magnifies the effectiveness of the attack.
  • "Super Cero": This is a significantly more powerful version of Quodrak's average Cero. He charges it with the usual gesture, but with the support of the two additional pairs of arms that bend forward and help him focus energy. Subsequently, he launches the fairly wide beam of green energy at a target, causing quite a sizeable explosion on impact. The technique does not seem to have any unique properties aside from its increased raw power output, and Quodrak calls it a "Super Cero" solely because he thinks that "it sounds cool".
