Okuyamaru Shutara (修多羅 億脚丸, Shutara Okuyamaru), otherwise known as Tonjikiha's Duo Wen Tian (多聞天, Duō Wén Tiān), is a powerful Shinigami and member of the Royal Guard, acting as the Maintainer of the Seal. Before that she was the Fourth Officer of the Royal Guard (零番隊 第四官, Zerobantai Daiyonkai) and Divine General of the North (北方神将, Hoppō Shinshō). She holds the title "Disciple Bearing Chains" (門人鎖所有, Monjin Tozashoyū), and is considered by many to be the founder of Hakuda, carrying on the teachings of Mikogami Ōtani.

Appearance[]

Okuyamaru is a petite woman possessed of an incredibly lithe figure that lacks even the slightest hint of musculature on her form, a gross deception given her inhuman strength. She has a fair, almost pale, complexion and her skin is marked by singular silver lines running across each of her limbs that terminate into small circles on her elbows, thighs, wrists and ankles. She has long black hair that messily runs down either side of her face, loose strands poking out every which way. The fringe of her hair is styled like that of a typical hime cut but the ends are uneven and a portion on the right side is instead laid out like spikes, giving her a disheveled look. She adorns a headdress of gold, shaped into an ornate but chaotic ring of rectangular rods. Her face is slender and unblemished, and her eyes are ovular in shape, surrounded by a set of light creases that give her a tired and pressured look. Her pupils are a lime-like green, which is given emphasis by the dark eye shadow she wears. Her nose is fairly small but possesses a well-defined bridge and the tip points downward slightly, likewise she has strongly defined lips of which the upper is naturally pressed back, giving her a form of underbite. She dresses in a standard Shinigami Shihakushō apart from the kosode and shitagi which she replaces with a black sleeveless and backless undershirt. As a member of the Royal Guard, she also wears a bulky, white haori which is much too large for her, having sleeves that could cover her arms at least three times over. The haori bears the insignia of the Royal Guard on its back, and below that a zig-zagged diamond emblem. She often foregoes footwear in favour of travelling barefoot, leaving the soles of her feet covered in dirt.

Personality[]

At first glance Okuyamaru might come across as a jolly giant-like figure, she brims with joy and is eternally friendly with everyone around her. She jokes, and enthuses about the smallest of things, laughing heartily at anything that might amuse her. She greets all of her friends by wrapping them up in a bear hug, a mighty display of her vicious strength and her own lack of understanding of just how strong she is, as she often happens to crush those unfortunate enough to end up in her grasp.[1] With boundless energy and enthusiasm, she is easily the life of any party and has been known to turn many atmospheres light just by being present. Others liken her to a doting mother for how affectionate she tends to be with other people, babying them incessantly and ensuring everything is right in their world. She is incredibly carefree, happy to play around in any given situation with an attitude that can easily be misconstrued as naïveté. Not helped by her lack of an indoor voice or personal etiquette. In a word, she is eccentric.

Though she would appear to be absorbed in her own imagination, there is far more to Okuyamaru than one can discern at a glance. In spite of her seeming inattentive outlook, she is actually an incredible listener, which is part of why she is treated as a mother figure. No matter the problems, no matter what they have to say, and no matter just what Okuyamaru is doing, people are able to take solace in the fact that she not only hears what they have to say, but that she is actively listening to them. Internalising it, and doing what she can to help. She offers praise, warmth, acceptance, condolence, and shelter, in such a way that it may be better to say that Okuyamaru is a woman of many faces, but most people have come to accept her treatment as genuine. She has a strong habit of remembering people's names, often as single character pet names, that allow her to keep a grasp of the many people she interacts with in Soul Society, such as Ikiryō Kuragari whom she affectionately refers to as "Ki" (キ), this is often paired with honourifics that she believes sounds cute, resulting in nicknames such as "Wa-kun" (ワ君), which is what she knows Kurokawa Tadayoshi by.

History[]

Bleach: Duality[]

She was the Captain of the 2nd Division until around 112 years ago when she ascended to the ranks of the Royal Guards in recognition of her mastery in the art of Hakuda.

Powers & Abilities[]

Natural Abilities

Monstrous Strength: Duo Wen Tian has a short physical stature and a lithe accompanying physique, in spite of this she is incredibly strong to the point of being recognized by this single fact alone across a great deal of Soul Society. Enemies and allies alike fear her legendary strength and even the Captains of the Gotei 13 cower at the idea of being caught in her grip. She carries physical power on the level of extremes such that it is considered an extraordinary feat for anyone to be able to take the full force of her attacks and survive. She effortlessly goes up against opponents many times her size and comes out on top with startling regularity. Part of the reason her strength is feared is that she lacks control over it. Attributed to being a bit scatterbrained, she commonly forgets just how tough she is resulting in common displays of unintentional brutality and destruction, such as her favoured greeting among comrades and friends; a powerful bear hug that crushes the backs and strangles the air out of her victims.

Shinigami Powers & Abilities

Hakuda Grandmaster: As the final student of Mikogami Ōtani, a man widely believed to have been the creator of Hakuda, Wen Tian was left with the task of further developing the man's final lessons. As she had viewed the man as her saviour, she took this to heart and devoted a large portion of her life to study of the martial arts as a means to bring out those lessons he had taught her. Since then she has become known as the greatest master of Hakuda among all in Soul Society. She stands on a level far above even her closest peer such that it wouldn't even be seen as competition for her to fight that individual. What sets her apart is not who taught her or how deeply she studied the martial arts but her approach, initially necessary for her own survival Hakuda is an intrinsic part of how Wen Tian grew as a person, it is intertwined with who she is and could almost be said to be ingrained in her very being. The difference between her and others is one of relation rather than learning. Her free-flowing grasp on Hakuda has allowed her to encompass most of its various teachings, avoiding such things as "styles" and "schools" in favour of abiding by the lessons of the arts themselves which is often a collective lesson on peace and balance for oneself and others.

  • General Prowess: Despite her lithe frame and childish personality, Duo Wen Tian is undeniably skilled and extremely powerful with her usage of Hakuda. Her mastery of the art is such that she generally relies on it over anything else, keeping her Zanpakutō is a matter of her bond with it rather than her reliance on its power. In a matter of moments she can unleash an incredibly complex array of attacks using only her hands and feet with such speed and ferocity to leave even someone as skilled as Satō Shingen on the defensive. Her skill became public knowledge after the tale spread that she had defeated a Vasto Lorde with only her bare hands, breaking down the creature's incredible defenses with only her skill in the martial arts. She does not rely on any particular school of Hakuda in order to utilize her abilities, instead she uses a wide range of techniques and teachings from all the different schools of the art. These are even combined with mundane maneuvers that she makes up on the spot or techniques taken from other schools to create a style that is wholly unpredictable with no discernible patterns to form a proper counter towards it. Through her skill she has been able to go toe-to-toe wipe out the better part of a Hollow army by herself without taking a scratch and could repel armed opponents such as Captains with no weapon of her own, having even once caught a blade just with her toes.
  • Niku Yūdaku (肉熊抱, Naked Bearhug): A very simple technique that consists of catching an opponent in her grasp and then squeezing them within her arms with all of her strength. What is essentially a hug, or simple hold, is turned into a crushingly powerful technique by the sheer strength Wen Tian exudes. Easily crushing the bones and organs of Captain-level beings if they are unlucky enough to be caught in her grasp.
  • Hyakubaikotsu (百倍骨, Centuple/Hundredfold Bone): A further development of the Ikkotsu technique, Wen Tian delivers a series of ninety-eight punches, each one delivered with more power and speed than the last, such that her arms seem to simply disappear during the assault. Following the ninety-eight strikes she then follows it up with Sōkotsu to finish the technique. It is ninety-eight times stronger than it would be on its own and the resulting impact generates a powerful shockwave in the process that ripples through the sound barrier.[2]
  • Miru'in Bosatsu (観音菩薩, Guanshiyin): Self-styled as the "ultimate kick", Wen Tian manifests all of her innumerable Kōgeishi arms through her sleeves and proceeds flatten the landscape in a bombardment of powerful hammering strikes. The distance it covers is enormous and each strike is extraordinarily powerful, allowing Wen Tian to eradicate an entire enemy force in a single swift motion. Needless to say, such a technique, no matter how simple it might appear requires immense quantities of energy to perform and summoning so many of her arms is an exhausting effort.
  • Nimaru Atama (睨むを頭, Lower the Head): Okuyamaru delivers a lightning-fast hammer kick with perfect accuracy and precision, intentionally missing her opponent with only the very tip of her foot managing to brush against them during the motion. This fleeting contact allows her to wrest control of her target's Reiryoku from them, and instill a command that causes it all to pull downward, inducing a crushing weight in her target that propels them flat to the ground with immediate and devastating result as they are hammered by their own power with such ferocity as to shatter the ground beneath themselves. The attack is distinguished from an ordinary kick by the violet plumes of electricity that course around her leg as she moves.[3] Okuyamaru affectionately refers to the technique as her "Wen Tian Chop" (聞天・チョップ, Wén Tiān Choppu).
  • Satsuka (殺火, Slaying-Fire): Okuyamaru delivers precise jabs at two points on the wrists of her target, in a deliberate motion aimed at sealing off a pair of Reiatsu vents located within the wrists. Sealing both of them off simultaneously causes the victim's Reiatsu to flow back into itself and essentially cook them from the inside out with their own Reiatsu. Okuyamaru achieves this feat by injecting a small amount of her spiritual power into the wrists as she strikes, creating a blockage through which the energy can no longer flow. The technique only works if both vents are sealed, and thus serves to be difficult to pull off against anyone who is aware enough to evade her.[3]

Shunpo Master:

  • Shihō no Saisho - Suari (死楓の最初•巣蟻, First of the Shihō - Ant; referencing their hive): (Under Construction)

Unique Spiritual Power: All Spiritual beings, and Humans, have some degree of Reiryoku within themselves. When that degree is over a certain limit the possessor is granted all kinds of abilities of supernatural nature which are generally more powerful the higher that degree is. One thing available to all spiritual beings is the ability to emit Reiatsu (霊圧, Spiritual Pressure) and is how others most often quantify the power of others when compared to the pressure they can emit. Battles between spiritual beings are decided purely by the strength of ones spiritual power, with a large enough gap between them making one side practically invulnerable whilst the other would be easily wiped out by simple attacks, if not the side effects of spiritual pressure alone. As a member of the Royal Guard, Duo Wen Tian has power surpassing that of Captains in the Gotei 13, even still it appears to be on a level of its own. It has tangible and very intense weight, akin to high levels of gravity in its crushing power, it operates differently from other spiritual power to the point that it is normally imperceptible to others around her regardless of whether she hides it or not, but it can be quantified by spiritual senses like normal spiritual pressure. It is also "corruptive" in nature when interacting with the spiritual energy of others, it quickly overtakes the opposing force and makes it like itself. These traits are why things such as healing Kidō are locked off from Wen Tian but also grants her unnatural strength and endurance being able to bear the strain with little issue day-in and day-out. These traits also form the basis of her personal fighting style. Her spiritual energy is green in colour.

Zanpakutō

Kumojiki (雲食鬼, Cloud Eating Demon) takes the form of a large sewing needle made primarily out of gold with the tip being a blackened colour. The eye of the needle is quite long, running down about half the needle's length, and the butt of the needle stretches out into a butterfly adornment, with a golden frame that holds a set of glass wings in a variety of colours, though primarily purple and green. Before being charged with maintaining Yoritaē's seal, she used to disguise her Zanpakutō as a jitte with a smooth steel boshin, two kagi and a hexagonal tsuba. It had a blackened tsuka wrapped up in gold ribbons that streamed off in the end instead of a more simple tassel. Kumojiki's koshirae was black and bordered with gold, the Royal Guard symbol emblazoned on one side. It was also wrapped in a gold ribbon of similar length. Since taking her charge, however, she instead leaves it in its original form, where it rests in her hair, acting as an ornamental hairpin. Kumojiki is one of the few Zanpakutō to possess a spirit of opposite gender to its wielder, though he is said to closely resemble her. Though it is a Melee-type Zanpakutō, the ability it possesses also lead it being called a cursed sword.

  • Spirit Manifestation: Kumojiki is able to manifest outside of his master's Inner World on his own at any time,[4] usually doing so in capacity as a form of protector, given the long periods Okuyamaru spends suspended by her duties. He takes the appearance of a tall man, his body hidden under layers of draped robes in a variety of colours and patterns. The sleeves of his robe are stitched together, and his arms are further bound in front of him by chains. His face is obscured by a hood, though those peering in will find that his face isn't hidden in shadow, but rather covered by a cover of black thread, that appears to be shadows at a glance. His entire body is surrounded, and held down, by chains that manifest between himself and surrounding surfaces. He remains capable of movement, appearing from place to place as he wills.
  • Shikai: Kumojiki's release command is "Thread of All Things" (万物の糸, banbutsu no ito). When activated, Okuyamaru throws her Zanpakutō into the air where it begins to glow brightly before popping as if it were a balloon. In the aftermath a series of threads appear around Okuyamaru, attached to the ground, but otherwise trailing off infinitely to nowhere. As light runs across their length, they shift shape into chains.
Shikai Special Ability: Kumojiki possesses the ability to subjugate the chains of all realms, giving Okuyamaru an understated but rather unfathomable power. In the most basic sense, it allows her to manifest and manipulate chains for a variety of purposes such as striking or subduing her opponents, but she can also link her chains to others, essentially binding them to her control. This capability extends as far as the Chain of Fate that links a Human's soul to its body, and the Saketsu which plays a large part in granting Shinigami their power, she is even able to take control of the chains of Hell, turning them against the sinners with which they bind. This ability makes her essentially inescapable in combat, for the only way to actually escape Okuyamaru is to forfeit your powers or your very life, once she binds these crucial spiritual bonds. The nature of this power, being effective against Humans and Shinigami rather than Hollows, is what earned it its cursed title.
  • Bankai: Yamata Kumojiki: Jōdo'i Musōjō (八岐雲食鬼衣娘, Eight-Branched Cloud Eating Demon: Dress of the Pure Land's Peerless Daughter). When released, Okuyamaru is struck four times incredibly quickly, with enough power to cause her to spit up blood. Three large chains are revealed to have embedded themselves into her back, visibly coiling around parts of her internals before her wounds close up. Her body is wrapped in thousands of chains, laid out in such a way as to resemble an extravagant kimono, though its sleeves and and coat tails feed into chains that bind Okuyamaru in place, sinking into the nearest surfaces. From the belt of chains coiled around her waist, eight tails branch off freely, seemingly autonomous.
Bankai Special Ability: Yamata Kumojiki: Jōdo'i Musōjō greatly augments Okuyumaru's control over chains, perhaps best expressed by the large chains emerging from her back, said to be the tethers that hold the three worlds in place. Though it cannot be seen, Okuyamaru also explains that a chain that connects to Hell is also present. Through her Bankai, Okuyamaru can freely manifest chains anywhere she sees fit, even going so far as to transform surfaces or entire areas into chains should she will it. These chains are nigh unbreakable, resistant to just about anything one might throw at them. Okuyamaru explains that this because she can bind her chains to her target through their Saketsu, and, as such, her chains becomes as strong as her opponent. In cases where this is not true, they inherit their strength from her, and few entities exist that can face a member of the Royal Guard. She can take this ability to its extreme, even forging new Saketsu on entities that would not possess them, such as Hollows. The thing that truly sets her Bankai apart, however, is the ability to sever the chains of all things, allowing her to decimate her foes by severing the links between bodies and their souls, or sealing their abilities permanently.

Trivia[]

  • As stated her name, Okuyamaru can be taken to mean "One Hundred Million Legs" (億 (Oku), Hundred Million; 脚 (Ya), Leg; 丸 (Maru), A whole thing), whilst Shutara can be translated as "Cultivate the Sun Setting Silk" (修 (Shu), Cultivate; 多 (Ta), Sun Set; 羅 (Ra), Silk). In addition her title Duō Wén Tiān (多聞天 (多闻天) is one of the Chinese names for Vaiśravaṇa, the chief of the Four Heavenly Kings in Buddhism. The characters for the name mean "Deity who hears much" or "Much hearing God".
  • The Wen Tian Chop technique was inspired by the Shinigami Chop used by Shinigami in the popular anime/manga series Soul Eater.
