Nichiya Dei (出樋虹誓, Dei Nichiya) is a member of The Guard and is in possession of one of Kisuke Urahara's lost Reishi Visualization Charms. He also works as a doctor at Fubuki General Hospital. He seems to be the least invested in Seiji’s goals for The Guard.
Appearance[]
Nichiya is a pale man of a somewhat short stature with short scruffy black green-tinted hair and dark green eyes. He wears a white button up shirt with black slacks and gray shoes. He sometimes wears a green coat. His Reishi Visualization Charm is worn as a ring on his left ring finger.
At work, Nichiya wears a white coat with a green button up shirt, black pencil skirt, and black flats.
As a child he was a girl with long hair in a braid, a white shirt, and green overall dress.
Personality[]
As a result of the incident in his childhood, Nichiya is a very high strung and paranoid person. He is constantly wary of anything bad that could go wrong at any given moment, even if it's something incapable of actually happening. He is very easy to startle, causing him to yelp or scream often. He has been told by Bia Gomasaki that he shakes like a chihuahua due to his constant anxiety.
Despite his anxiety, Nichiya is also rather snarky when he's not too nervous to speak up. He complains often and points out things that annoy him about others, such as Bia's attitude or the lack of work ethic in his coworkers. Constantly frustrated by small things, Nichiya gets fed up easily and "jokes" about putting himself out of his misery.
Often taunted and teased by Shuya, Nichiya feels miserable in Shuya's presence. While he doesn't have the courage to really stand up for himself, he does often snap a bit at Shuya in response and bickers with Shuya as well, who clearly enjoys their back and forth banter, much to Nichiya's dismay.
His relationship with Bia is also on the verge of counting as enemies since she is openly rude to him and annoyed by his rambling, but unlike with Shuya, Nichiya actually has the courage to stand up for himself against her. They often get caught in a cycle of insulting each other until someone breaks them up.
Despite having a terrible relationship with both Shuya and Bia, Nichiya does get along well with Anosuke. Nichiya often hides behind Anosuke when he's scared and Nichiya has never been rude to Anosuke prior to quitting The Guard. Anosuke also makes an effort to help Nichiya calm down after be freaks out. Similarly to the way Anosuke assists Seiji in whatever he needs, Anosuke also tries to assist Nichiya however he can, which he doesn't do for the other three members.
For all his faults, Nichiya still has morals and standards. While he considers killing Mikado Endō when he has the opportunity since it would help Seiji accomplish his goal, Nichiya ultimately can't bring himself to do it. He sees himself as a coward for it at first, but then realizes that being in The Guard has caused him to lose sight of who he is. Once Shuya tries to get Bia, Anosuke, and Nichiya to join him in breaking Cynthia out of jail, Nichiya stands his ground that he's had enough of making himself public enemy number one. While his words are harsh, he refuses to start a direct conflict with the police and finally quits. He also recognizes how Wakana's desire to use his RVC to protect people is more noble than he ever acted with it and he resolves to be more like her going forward.
At work he projects the image of a very serious and quiet woman, keeping his anxieties to himself and preferring to keep all interactions strictly professional.
History[]
When Nichiya was young he was walking home in the afternoon from a friend's house. On the way he stopped to spend time at the park between their houses. Unbeknownst to him, a child Soul was there to try to hide from a Hollow. When the Hollow found the child, Nichiya flet a strong gust of wind as the Hollow attacked and he was blown back. He badly scraped his arm and the Hollow stepped on his leg in the process of grabbing the child. Nichiya's screaming was heard by a neighbor, who came to his aid. Without being able to see what happened, Nichiya had no idea how to explain what occurred. His parents arrived and took him to the hospital upon realizing he had a broken leg.
While everyone believed Nichiya simply had a bad fall that caused his broken leg, Nichiya was positive something else had to be the cause since he knew he didn't simply fall. However, no one listened to him and thought he was overreacting out of fear. His mother spent his time recovering trying to shower him in love in hopes it would help him forget about the incident. Unfortunately it didn't and Nichiya became a paranoid person afraid of something similar happening to him again.
Nichiya's leg eventually healed perfectly and he returned to school. In the following years his parents divorced and he stayed with his mother. After high school he came out to his parents about his identity and his father cut off contact with him. He entered Nagano University and graduated with a medical degree, eventually becoming a doctor at Fubuki General Hospital.
At thirty-two, he went to visit his mother. She gifted him a black ring a friend of hers found, thinking he would like it. Not liking jewelry, Nichiya initially refused the gift, but his mother convinced him to take it by saying he could wearing it as a fake wedding band so people would leave him alone about the topic.
When he arrived at work with the ring on the following day, Nichiya was confused by the high amount of patients wandering the halls and sitting in rooms that didn't belong to them. Asking one of them in the hall what room he belonged in, the patient said no had spoken to him in months. A nurse questioned Nichiya who he was talking to and it dawned on him that she couldn't see the patient. Nichiya immediately freaked out and went to hide in a storage room where he was met with another patient who was missing an arm. Nichiya screamed and ran out of the room, colliding with a cart being pushed down the hall. Nichiya was brought to an empty in-patient room and tried to explain what he was seeing, but no one believed him. Assuming he was under too much stress, he was dismissed from work and told to go home to get some rest.
Frustrated with not being believed, Nichiya left in a hurry, ignoring all the patients he was still seeing. On the way to his car, he heard a roar in the parking garage and a Hollow crept up behind him. Upon turning around, the Hollow lunged at him and he put up his arms to defend himself. The ring on his finger turned into a large shield and blocked the Hollow's attack. Before the Hollow could attack again, Anosuke Delgado showed up and defeated it in a single punch. Too relieved and freaked out at the same time, Nichiya dropped to the ground and profusely thanked Anosuke for saving him. Anosuke pointed behind him to reveal the cowering Soul hiding in the corner behind Nichiya. He freaked out again and hid behind Anosuke.
The two were approached by Seiji Kanajo, who assured the Soul it was safe now and the Soul ran off inside the hospital. Seiji then pointed to Nichiya's ring and told him it was allowing him to see Souls and Hollows. Nichiya proceeded to take off the ring and try to hand it to Seiji, saying he didn't want something so dangerous. Seiji wondered why he wouldn't want something that could help him protect others, but Nichiya assured him that as a doctor he already did a decent job at keeping people alive. Seiji tried to get through to him by pointing out all the Souls in the hospital and how doctors couldn't always save everyone. And that especially in death doctors were useless to help patients like the Soul that was almost just attacked. With the ring, Nichiya could protect people in ways no normal doctor ever could. Growing swayed by Seiji's words, Seiji asked Nichiya to join him and Anosuke in protecting the whole city.
Nichiya thought back to when no one believed him after he broke his leg as a child, and how no one believed him about seeing ghosts earlier either. Nichiya then agreed to join them and Seiji welcomed him to The Guard.
Plot[]
Welcome to Fubuki City Arc[]
When Cynthia brings Yorito Endō to Eden Treasures to meet The Guard, Nichiya is present alongside Bia, Anosuke, and Shuya.
Mother Arc[]
When Mikado Endō is attacked by the Hollow, Mother, for the first time and sent to the hospital, Nichiya is the doctor assigned to him. Realizing that Mikado is the man Seiji is after, Nichiya briefly considers this the perfect opportunity to kill Mikado with an overdose, but Nichiya ultimately chickens out. However, he does inform Seiji that Mikado has been admitted to the hospital after an unexplained incident.
When Nichiya inspects Mikado's injuries again, he concludes it has to be the results of a Hollow attack.
The Guard Arc[]
Along with the rest of The Guard, Nichiya moves into the second floor of Eden Treasures after they become wanted criminals. He is forced to bunk with Shuya and frets over not being able to go to work. He begins pacing back and forth in their room worrying about getting arrested and having a criminal record. Bia comes in the room and tells him to shut up since she can hear him.
When the group learns that Cynthia has been arrested and is in police custody, Seiji wavers in the face of actual consequences. Shuya decides to take charge and break Cynthia out of jail, but Nichiya decides that would be taking things too far and that he's finally had enough. He snaps and calls out the other three, causing Shuya to call him weak-willed. Nichiya shoves Shuya out of his way as he leaves.
He gives his RVC to Kūzen, who immediately has it taken from him by Wakana. They argue with each other that Wakana shouldn't have something so dangerous but Wakana doesn't want to be useless. Nichiya recognizes that she has far more conviction to do something helpful with the RVC than he ever did and suggests letting her have it is a good idea. Kūzen gives up and lets her have it.
Tsuneo's Decision Arc[]
During the following month, Nichiya drives by Eden Treasures and sees a light on on the second floor. He stops by and the owner greets him before telling him Seiji and Anosuke are upstairs. As he starts heading up the stairs, she asks him if he's seen Shuya lately as he hasn't been to work for a few weeks. Nichiya tells her he hasn't seen him and he wonders what could have happened to Shuya.
Upstairs, Seiji and Anosuke are surprised to see Nichiya actually came back. He asks what happened after he left and they both fill him in, telling him Bia was arrested and no one knows where Shuya is. Cynthia also quit The Guard and is trying to return to a normal life. Seiji says he intends to move back to Nagasaki to hide from authorities there. Anosuke reveals he wants to go with Seiji, but Seiji refuses, saying Anosuke should start living for himself from now on. Seiji then asks Nichiya what he intends to do. Nichiya doesn't know what to say for a while, eventually saying he wants to do the same as Cynthia--return to a normal life. Seiji wishes him all the best before walking out of Eden Treasures.
Left alone with Anosuke, Nichiya asks him where he'll go. Anosuke says he doesn't have anywhere to go, since he was kicked out of the basement of his old workplace. Nichiya hesitates before offering to let Anosuke stay with him for a while. Anosuke is grateful and they leave Eden Treasures together, thanking the owner for all her kindness to them on the way out.
Shuya and Hojan Arc[]
Equipment[]
Reishi Visualization Charm: Created by Kisuke Urahara and still in a prototype stage, this device allows anyone in possession of it to become spiritually aware and be able to see Pluses, Hollows, and Soul Reapers. However, it does not allow the owner to detect spiritual pressure. Since it is still a prototype, it does not actually kill Hollows, but simply destabilizes their bodies so they are turned to pure Reishi and then reform later. It takes the form of a plain black ring. Its weapon form is that of a large shield. Nichiya eventually hands his RVC over to Kūzen Endō, who has it taken from him by Wakana Tomie and she becomes the current owner of the ring.
Powers & Abilities[]
Medical Knowledge: Having been a doctor for several years, Nichiya is very skilled in the medical field. He can assess his companions' injuries in mere moments and quickly and precisely provide first aid. He also serves as The Guard's primary medic.
Weaknesses[]
- Being the only one in The Guard to be a non-combatant, Nichiya lacks any real combat experience.

- Nichiya is voiced by Kengo Kawanishi in Japanese and Mark Whitten in English.
- In Japanese, Nichiya refers to himself as "watashi" at work and uses a higher pitched voice. He uses “ore” outside of work and uses a lower pitched voice. He speaks with a Hokkaido dialect.
