"This world has always teetered on the edge of balance and chaos. Yet, can it not be said that a state of constant cycling from balance to chaos to balance... is not itself a form of balance? In every era, the one who holds the world changes, and with the instability that accompanies a shift in power dynamics, a new peace arises from the ashes of the old peace. The... 'ordinary peace'... as the Monk has called it before. It was the mission of the Balancers — nay, the Shinigami, they no longer deserve to be called Balancers — the mission of Shinigami to maintain balance during these times of change yet they instead took the reigns and became a part of that cycle by seizing the world for themselves. They fell to their base instincts of conquest, and so, without someone to defend the balance during times of chaos, the world risks being lost for good. It falls upon me then, and no other, to fight against any who disturb the cycle of balance. I fight alone." |

Nagayoshi Ooka (大鹿 長可, Ooka Nagayoshi) is a male Shikonjin that once served the Soul Society several millennia ago. If his name were to be recorded within Soul Society's history, it would be said that he was the true first Substitute Shinigami instead of Kūgo Ginjō, for he was originally a Human that gained Shinigami powers. In truth, he was actually a Quincy, belonging to one of several active families at the time, who became disillusioned with the mission of eradicating Hollows. After crossing paths with the Shinigami, called Balancers at the time, who was responsible for his acquiring of Shinigami powers, he had chosen to side with them, believing more in the ideal of maintaining balance more so than execution of harmful entities at the cost of balance. Nagayoshi, however, was betrayed once again by his ideals as he was attacked by a powerful Vasto Lorde and became tainted by its influence; the Quincy in him causing the Hollow reiatsu to course through his body as a poison while the Shinigami powers within him provided a resistance to it. The end result was a Hollowfication that corrupted his once-black hair into white, and in the process, he became what would eventually be known as a four-way hybrid of souls. Betrayed by the viewpoints of both Shinigami and Quincy, Nagayoshi took it upon himself to seek out his own definition of balance, even referring to himself as the "Last Balancer" (最後の調整者 (ラスト·バランサ), Rasuto Baransa; Japanese for "Last Regulator").
