Māipō (間合い歩, "Interval Steps"; meaning "stepping within a space") is a Hohō technique used by humans whom have rigorously practiced martial arts in order to greatly develop their speed. It is likened to the Shinigami art of Shunpō due to the form of "swishing" sound the Māipō technique generates when used to move from one point to another, but resembles Hirenkyaku due to Māipō's very fluid motions and due to the fact that it possesses the same limitations as it is being utilized by those with a physical body. Because it is a byproduct of advanced martial arts, training and skill are what determines how fast a user of Māipō can move. Those who possess little skill and have never truly advanced beyond the novice stage of training (such as those who would not be awarded black belt status in their respective martial arts) would obviously be out of practice and unable to invoke the true speed of the Māipō, causing those individuals to be considerably slower and quickly find themselves exhausted after attempting even a few steps. Some expert-level martial artists typically use the Māipō without ever realizing they were using it, such was the case when Ryō noted that Minato was starting to learn how to use his Māipō more effectively, despite the latter having never heard the term prior to their confrontation.
It is considered to be slightly unique in terms of other Hohō techniques because of the fact that it does not make use of surrounding reishi in order to "stand" on the air but rather uses internal reiryoku to propel the user into a high-speed movement. Spiritual energy literally gathers in the legs of the martial artist and produced a smooth flow that runs down the legs and down to the feet, pushing the user off their starting position and causes them to engage in a continuous movement, like that of Hirenkyaku, which can either be slowed down or sped up by additional steps, like that of Shunpō.
