"Jiūkǔndao is a weapon bound to its wielder by fate. It is my weapon. A part of me. You cannot hope to surmount such a bond with a paltry ability." |
Máo Yǒng (毛勇, "Courageous Water Mallow") is a Soul and a member of the ancient Balancers of Souls. He serves as a Major of the Detention Corps under Mamoru Nakatani.
Appearance[]
Máo is a tall and slender middle-aged man of Chinese descent, with toned physique. He has relatively short, jet black hair that are mostly slicked to the right side, whereas the left side is trimmed to a crew cut. He wears a short, well-kept beard. His eyes are dark brown. He has a tan complexion and a tattoo on his left temple: 束 (Shù, "Bind").
Yǒng wears a variant of the standard Balancer uniform that consists of a white tunic, red sash, white baggy trousers and yellow hard-cuffed boots. In addition, he dons two golden bracelets and a pair of earrings, all of them adorned with ruby gems.
Personality[]
Stern, callous and ruthless, Yǒng embodies the Shinigami's outlook on the Balancers. Whereas not ostensibly sadistic or malicious, he is a coldly efficient professional. Consequently, he does not hesitate to accomplish his tasks by any means necessary.
History[]
Máo Yǒng used to be an accomplished mercenary and assassin in the ancient past. He was frequently hired by wealthy people due to his skills, professionalism and pragmatism. However, his targets were often people of noble status, so he had made a number of powerful enemies with his feats. In the end Máo was pursued, cornered and captured. He had borne unspeakable tortures with nary a reaction, thus greatly aggravating his torturers. However, he was only human, so in the end his body succumbed earlier than his mind and ultimately he died, bound in a dark cave.
Plot[]
Powers and Abilities[]
Enhanced Strength: In spite of his relatively slender stature, Máo boasts an increased physical strength. Enhanced Durability: Máo has toughened his body in order to be able to withstand attacks he cannot evade. For instance, with the help of his Jiūkǔndao as an impromptu shield suffered only light damamge after being struck and sent crashing into a building with a powerful bolt shot by Carmen Abandonato[1]. Enhanced Endurance: Yǒng boasts respectable stamina and resistance to pain. Even fairly powerful attacks have limited influence on his capacity to fight[1]. In addition, he can mentally weather the amount of damage required to activate Shìfàng, then wield it in combat with no clear indication of being hindered in a meaningful manner[2]. |
Whip Mastery: As one of the most experienced Balancers still in service, Yǒng wields his chain whip with an indisputably masterly skill. Capable of controlling it with both his hands and his mind, he can perform fast sweeping attacks which are difficult to track and evade. Moreover, he can easily employ the unique properties of his weapon to hamper, incapacitate or disarm his opponents. Hakuda Expert: Whilst not his primary method of combat, he is still a very proficient unarmed combatant. This ability is particularly useful in the event of needing to pacify someone without bloodshed, or when separated from his Jiūkǔndao, for instance. Shunpo Expert: He is uncommonly fast and agile. In the event of being unable to reach an opponent with his chain whip, Yǒng can employ a series of erratic evasive manoeuvres that help him close the distance whilst being shot at all the time[1]. Kadō Expert: Furthermore, he is a capable user of the ancient magic. Knowledgeable in the fields of Underworld and Fire Kadō, he helped his superiors to unleash Black from its massive chains[3]. Unlike most of the Detention Corps troopers, who had to cooperate in teams of six to launch a successful Zunōka Akudō, he was able to do so on his own[4]. Nevertheless, he specialises in binding spells. This proficiency combined with the special ability of his Jiūkǔndao have earned him the moniker "The God of Chains". Great Spiritual Power: As an experienced member of the Balancers, Máo has a very large amount of spiritual energy at his disposal, easily comparable to a Shinigami Captain. The colour of his Reiatsu is maroon. |
Bēngdài (繃帶, "Bandage"): is a long chain whip with a hooked blade on one end and a dark purple hilt on the other. There is a ruby embedded on the pommel of the hilt.
Shìfàng: Guān Zhào (棺罩, "Pall"): Like every Shìfàng, this state may be activated only when the wielder is in a critical condition, usually in a state resembling the moment of their death when applicable. Bēngdài wraps around Máo and fuses with his body. The metal bands envelop him, plug his wounds and form a makeshift armour. At the same time, numerous animate chains wrap around his limbs and torso. The substantially increased Reiatsu emanates an oppressive aura.
