Kitsune (尾霊 (キツネ), Japanese for "Tailed Spirit") are supernatural beings that came into existence during the fall of the Old World and the creation of the Soul Society. When the fledgling circulation of souls was still unstable, before the world had settled into its current form, Kitsune entered into the cycle. Those who broke away from the circulation found themselves adrift in the chaos between the three worlds before eventually being reborn as canine-like spirits distinctive of foxes, which became their namesake. Similar to the masks of the Hollows and the horns of the Dragons, Kitsune are characterized by their tails. In ancient lore, the Kitsune were known as the manifestations of the emotions of the Soul King.

Overview[]

When the three worlds first came to be, the circulation of souls was still unstable. The world as it is known in the current age had still not taken its proper shape yet. During this time, many souls were prone to pour out of the cracks in the fledgling circulation, losing their stability and becoming Blanks. However, those who managed to hold onto their sense of self amidst the chaos, who possessed deep attachments to the world that they could not abandon, were able to resist losing their memories and instead transformed into something entirely different. These beings came to be known as Kitsune, their tails being reminders of the chains of fate which once tied them to the circulation of souls. It is for this reason that Kitsune become stronger and more adept at using their unique powers with the more tails they grow.

There are two ways for a Kitsune to be born; the first is through reproduction, wherein at least one parent is a Kitsune themselves, and the second is through the original means of their creation. When a person dies in the Soul Society, they return to the circulation of souls to be reincarnated as humans in the Material World. However, those with abnormally strong emotions or attachment find themselves instinctively unable to follow the current of the circulation, and so, whether consciously or not, their soul breaks away from the circulation and becomes reborn elsewhere as a Kitsune. These 'breeding grounds', so to speak, exist in random places throughout the three worlds, as Kitsune can be born anywhere, even in Hueco Mundo or the Valley of Screams.

Sōzōshin are said to be the polar opposites of Kitsune. Whereas Sōzōshin are inherently linked to the world and reinforce its truth, Kitsune broke away from the world and exist as its falsehood. Seireitou Kawahiru is a unique example of a hybrid born of these two contradictory existences. As a result of this, he inherited neither of their characteristic abilities, which seems to suggest that their factors cancel one another out.

When a Kitsune dies, their soul does not return to the circulation and instead breaks apart into Reishi. Because of this, a Kitsune cannot reincarnate, and the soul is lost forever. Due to the fact that they were not a part of the circulation to begin with, a Kitsune's death has no effect on the balance between the three worlds. It is unknown if Kitsune hybrids also experience this upon their deaths.

Abilities[]

It is said that Kitsune are 'beings of lies'. They are contradictions, born as the result of those who broke away from the fledgling circulation of souls but rejoined out of severe longing and attachment. The foundation of their power is called "Void" (無極, Mukyoku; Japanese for "Absolute Nothingness"), which allows them to warp the root of the world similar to that of Fullbring. However, the sheer scope of a Kitsune's Void ability goes far beyond the human technique of Fullbring, enabling them to tear apart 'reality' so as to insert 'falsehoods' into the cracks.

Behind the Scenes[]

The original basis for this article was more focused on a mythological approach to the Kitsune. It was later decided by the author to rework the concept to give it a more unique Bleach feel to it. The author gives special thanks to Njalm who motivated the creation of this article and helped the author to formulate his thoughts in its initial conception.
