This article, Kensuya Jai, was added by IllNoss Ent who determines its usage on this wiki.

"I couldn't give a damn if I'm not a Captain. I couldn't care less if I don't have Bankai either! I'm still a member of Squad 11 through and through! If I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die with a smile on my face, and laughing in the face of danger! So come and do your worst!"

-Kensuya Jai to Cang Du, prior to his death at the hands of the latter.

Kensuya Jai is a Shinigami who is the former 6th Seat of Squad Eleven. He doesn't contribute too much in the main arcs aside from the Thousand Years Blood War Arc where he is promoted to 4th Seat.. He unfortunately meets his end at the hands of the Sternritter Cang Du.

Appearance

Kensuya is a tall man with tan skin and dark grey hair that goes to his shoulders and is spikey in appearance. He is muscular but not to the point of being overly bulky. His hands are calloused due to constant training with Zanjutsu, Hakuda, and physical training. He has a scar that runs across his nose as a result of a battle with a Hollow. His left eye is shown to be brown in color while his right eye is whited out and has a scar running down his face along with the nose scar, making him half blind as a result. Like most members of Squad 11, he wears these scars with pride. He also has a few scars on his body from the various "training exercises" and battles he's been in over the years.

One of his distinct traits is his sharp canines, helping him to earn the moniker of "the Dog of Squad 11." It is unknown if these are natural or if he had dental work done in order to make his teeth that way.

Like every other Shinigami in the Gotei 13, he wears a black shihakusho uniform. This consists of a black kosode and black hakama, tied together with a white obi. Taking a page from Squad Nine's book, Kensuya wears a kosode without sleeves, mainly to show off his muscles. He wears brown prayer beads around his neck that were given to him by Airi during his time in the Shino Academy. He also has the kanji for "peace" on his shoulder. He has spiked wristbands on his arms as well. He keeps his Zanpakuto on the left hip.

Personality

As expected of any member of Squad 11, Kensuya lives for battle. As a child and all the way up to his graduation from the Academy, Kensuya has desired to fight more than anything else. Many have described him as being like an animal that is constantly wanting to be let off the leash. This has gotten him into trouble more than he cares to admit. Even he doesn't truly know where this drive for battle comes from.

Unlike many in the Gotei 13, he doesn't believe that he's truly fighting for a higher power or a greater cause. He sees his peers as potential opponents and rivals just waiting to be brought to the forefront. As of becoming a member of the Gotei 13, however, he's had to keep this lust for battle within the walls of Squad 11's barracks. This is mainly to avoid having to deal with the higher ups. Since his Squad is full of fighters like him, however, he doesn't ever seem to mind.

One of the things Kensuya hates with a passion, however, is one sided fights. Whether he be the winner or loser of a battle doesn't matter. If he loses a one sided fight, he'll have to train for who knows how long just to be a worthy challenge for the one who beat him, not knowing just how wide the gap could potentially be. If he wins a one sided fight, he risks being complacent in his victory and losing his edge due to how easily he beat his opponent. This is why he seeks to fight those who are around his level of strength and skill. As a result, this gives both him and his opponent have the chance to break their respective limits and surpass each other again and again.

In spite of his battle-hungry attitude, his friend Airi Monoma is one of the few people who can actually make him show off his more sensitive side. Whenever she's around, he makes sure to act more respectful than normal and she even manages to sway his opinions on Squad 4 somewhat as a result. There is some implication that he may be infatuated with her, but he will never speak about it and threatens almost anyone who calls him out on it.

He expresses a desire to attain Bankai someday but doesn't want the responsibilities of being a Captain. While he does respect the power a Captain does possess, he cares little for the various duties that come with them. In his mind, if his Captain doesn't really care, then he sees no reason to care either. One of his hobbies includes reading up on the history of Squad 11, particularly the various Kenpachi's throughout the years. He can also be seen reading books he got from the World of the Living involving various different forms of warfare, showing an interest in the tactical side of it.

History

Dying and being brought up in one of the higher numbered districts in the Rukongai, Kensuya's life was hardly a happy one. He was forced to fend for himself from an early age and desired nothing else but to survive. This resulted in many close calls and him having to shed blood again and again. Many called him an animal for these acts as well as the constant fights he would get into as a result.

One day he would come across two Shinigami from Squad 11 and he immediately challenged them to a dual. This man was known as Tenka Saizawa. The only weapon he had at the time was a knife while Tenka had his sword to work with. Kensuya was defeated but managed to cut Tenka a couple times before going down. As a sin of respect, Tenka decided to spare Kensuya, telling him that he has potential to be a decent Shinigami.

Kensuya had nobody but himself to really care for until he entered the Academy. He would, once again, pick fights with other students and get in trouble on more than one occasion. Ironically enough, one of the first real friends he made was someone who abhorred violence and just wanted to keep people from getting hurt. Her name was Airi Monoma. She never seemed intimidated by Kensuya in spite of his reputation and attitude. When he asked her why, all she would really say is that they were both souls looking for a better life at the end of the day.

Mainly due to Airi's influence, Kensuya would get into trouble less often and focus on graduating from the Academy. She even offered to help him with his studies every now and then to make sure he didn't fall behind his peers. Some of the students would suspect they were dating, much to Kensuya's annoyance and Airi's amusement. They would both eventually graduate from the Academy and become full fledged Shinigami. Airi would go to Squad 4 and Kensuya would go to Squad 11, where he would meet Tenka Saizawa once again.

Kensuya challenged Tenka once more, pointing out that he now had a proper sword to use this time around. When he also pulled out his signature knife, Tenka questioned why. All he said was that having a sword was great, but the knife he wielded had personality. Both of them would fight again with many of Squad Eleven's members spectating. Tenka would point out how much Kensuya improved, while Kensuya would express his joy about finally being able to fight in a battle against him again.

The fight between Tenka and Kensuya ended with Kensuya losing once again, but he smiled nonetheless. When pressed as to why he could he so chipper about losing, Kensuya says how much he hates one sided fights and talks about how much he wants to break his limits with his opponent. He vows to beat Tenka the next time they fight and if he can't do it, he'll break his limits again and again until he does. He tells Tenka not to get complacent during that time. Otherwise he'll snatch the 4th Seat rank right from under him. Tenka, of course, has no intention of letting that happen, and vows to keep getting stronger himself.

Plot

Soul Society Arc

Kensuya is one of the many Shinigami from Squad 11 who were hunting down Ichigo and his friends during their mission to save Rukia Kuchiki. Unfortunately, he does end up hospitalized before he can really get a chance to fight properly. During his time in Squad 4, he notices that his friend Airi is healing him. When asked as to how he got hurt, Kensuya simply mutters that she should know already. Both of them have a laugh afterwards and Airi continues to oversee his recovery.

When Captain Unohana scares some of the other Squad 11 members, Kensuya scoffs at their spinelessness. When Airi calls him out and claims he's just as scared of her as the others, Kensuya keeps silent, much to her amusement.

Lost Substitute Shinigami Arc

Sometime before the events involving Kugo Ginjo, Kensuya challenged Tenka for the right to 4th seat. Tenka only agreed if it would be to the death. While he was a bit somber about this, Kensuya ultimately agreed. Kenpachi Zaraki and the rest of Squad 11 observed this battle. The battle was long and hard fought, but Kensuya would eventually win and strike down his rival.

He earned his rank as the new 4th Seat and vowed to bring honor to the position.

Thousand Year Blood War Arc

Kensuya, along with several members of Squad 11, are hit by an attack from the Wandenreich. He orders his men to stand their ground and continue to fight, saying that this is what Squad 11 is known for. He is able to slay various Soldat with his Shikai. He soon comes face to face with Cang Du, Sternritter I, or "The Iron." In spite of him and his Squad members putting up an admiral fight, it ultimately wasn't enough to take down the Sternritter. His Shikai broke under Cang Du's iron skin and the Sternritter threw a punch right through his chest. Kensuya wouldn't make it to Squad 4 before he died. His last moments was wishing he could tell Airi just how much she meant to him.

Equipment

Knife: A weapon Kensuya kept with him since he was a child. He had snatched it from the corpse of a drunkard that tried to kill him. He had kept it with him ever since. It has been useful in case he ever needed to sneak in a stab or do a quick kill. The knife has a wooden handle and the blade has a dull grey color. In spite of it's rather old and worn down appearance, Kensuya has kept the blade sharp and can channel his spiritual energy through it in order to increase its cutting power.

Arm Guards: These arm guards cover his forearms. They are brown in appearance with small metal spikes on them. Their primary purpose is to keep his arms from getting crushed by an opponent with superior physical strength.

Powers and Abilities

Strategic Mind: While Kensuya is known for facing his enemies head on in combat, he has shown a strategic and calculative mind in the midst of battle. He will use his environment to his advantage if his opponent is significantly more powerful than him. This can include kicking up dust, using his Zanpakuto's power to blind the enemy, or destroying large structures to make them collapse on top of them. He doesn't employ these strategies often, however, as he does prefer a straightforward and honest to goodness battle.

Strong Reiatsu Level: As the Sixth Seat of Squad Eleven, Kensuya boasts impressive spiritual power. While obviously not at the level of a Liutenant or Captain, many have noted that his power is like a large body of water held back behind a dam just waiting to be released. After attaining his Shikai, Kensuya's energy would show visual similarities to sparks of electricity. These sparks would surround his whole body whenever he was fighting all out. Many of the non-seated members of Squad Eleven have made references to the God of Thunder Raijin when describing Kensuya's reiatsu. His reiatsu is bright red in color.

Impressive Strength: As a testament to his many years of physical training, Kensuya boasts incredible physical might for someone of his rank. Kensuya is able to lift over six tons when enhancing himself with reiatsu. This strength is more emphasized with his striking power rather than his lifting ability, however.

Zanjutsu Expert: As a member of Squad 11, Kensuya prioritizes Zanjutsu above his other skills. He is able to overwhelm dozens of unseated officers without breaking a sweat with just his sealed blade alone. While his style more or less falls more in line with instinctual rather than formal techniques, he does show actual Zanjutsu techniques as a testament to his dedication to the art.

--Ryodan (Bisection): A powerful Kendo technique where the user holds the sword with two hands and brings the sword down with a mighty swing, severely injuring the enemy as a result. This is one of Kensuya's favorite techniques to use as a finisher.

--Suikawari (Watermelon Splitting): A two-headed, overhead slash which cleanly and precisely cleaves an opponent's head in two. To compliment his agility, Kensuya made it a priority to train in the use of this technique day and night. He has had to alter his movements to a degree due to his height, however.

Shunpo Practitioner: Since Kensuya prioritizes Zanjutsu and, to a lesser extent, Hakuda before the other forms of combat, his skills in the use of Shunpo are average at best. At best, he can close the distance between himself and an opponent with short bursts for a surprise strike. He doesn't use Shunpo very often, otherwise.

Hakuda Expert: Kensuya's skill in Hakuda is almost as good as his level of skill in Zanjutsu. He's no master by any means, but he makes up for it with misdirection and grappling techniques similar to that of Judo.If this doesn't work, he'll adopt a fighting stance similar to that of boxers. In fact, he only really shows proficiency in two techniques that are closely related to each other.

--Ikkotsu (Single Bone): Using his reiatsu, Kensuya channels his attack with an electrical charge that can stun his opponent while severely injuring them at the same time.

--Sokotsu (Double Bone): With Sokotsu, the same application for Ikkotsu applies here. Due to using two fists instead of just one, the impact of the attack is doubled. With this attack, he can take down a Hollow with a single strike.

Kido Practitioner: Due to lacking an affinity and a desire to learn it on any level other than being a graduation requirement, Kensuya's skill in the use of Kido is almost laughable in comparison to some of his contemporaries. He has only shown any real proficiency in Hado and Bakudo ranging from one to ten. Like with Shunpo, he only uses it in quick instances in order to get him out of a tight spot.

Zanpakuto

Kaminari no shinjitsu (雷の真実 ,Thunderous Truth) is the name of Kensuya's Zanpakutō. In it's sealed state, it takes the form of the standard Shinigami sword with a rectangular guard and a red hilt.

Shikai: With the release command "Twist," Kensuya's sword takes the form of a double handed battle axe with a large brown hilt. The blades of the axe are white in color and the kanji for "Thunder" is on both sides. The kanji glows red whenever Kensuya uses his Shikai's special ability in battle.

Shikai Special Ability: Kaminari no Shinjitsu's ability revolves around thunder and lightning. He can channel his reiatsu into the blade, allowing the kanji to glow and, with a swing of the axe, can generate lightning with various levels of intensity. This can range from stunning hordes of enemies to severely damaging them with critical burns. He can swing his axe and discharge bolts of lightning for long range combat. He can use the lightning to enhance his melee strikes and do more damage than he would normally.

Bankai: Not achieved.
