Katsurō Ueno (上野勝郎, Victorious Son from the Upper Field) was a Shinigami and the Captain of the Tenth Division of Gotei 13. His Lieutenant was Saburō Watanabe.
Appearance[]
Katsurō is a fairly tall elderly man. He has long, braided grey hair, a trimmed beard and short eyebrows which indicate his descent from high nobility. The colour of his eyes is blue.
He wears long-sleeved variants of the standard Shinigami Shihakushō and Captain's haori.
Personality[]
A proud and elegant man, Katsurō is popular amongst his subordinates due to his warm-hearted disposition. He treats his men well, and is greatly distraught if one of them dies[1].
Plot[]
The Spectre of the Past Arc[]
Katsurō is present during the emergency Captain meeting organised after the unexpected arrival of a particularly dangerous Ryoka. He remains silent throughout its entire duration and does not comment upon Captain Kaoru Shōki's explanation of the Sōzōshin history, despite the fact that as a member of a Noble Family, he is distantly related to the aforementioned race[2].
The following morning he observes his subordinates as they inspect his Division's barracks in the search of the Ryoka. Lieutenant Watanabe approaches him to report that the intruder has not been found, to which a disemobodied voice promptly denies. Both of the Shinigami are surprised to find that Hikari Maebure has silently appeared nearby.
Subsequently, Watanabe is swiftly struck down, and Maebure challenges Katsurō whilst casually incapacitating the Tenth Division troops with his overwhelming Reiatsu. Enraged at his adjutant's death, Ueno promptly activates Shikai and attacks. Nevertheless, Hikari proves too strong even without releasing his Zanpakutō, and Katsurō's throat is mercilessly pierced when the Captain attempts to use Bankai. Choking on his own blood, he dies as his murderer mourns silently over him[1].
Powers and Abilities[]
Master Swordsman: Being one of the most seasoned Captains after Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto and Retsu Unohana, Katsurō is highly experienced in Zanjutsu. Shunpo Expert: Despite being on the average Captain level in terms of speed, Ueno was completely unable to keep up with Hikari Maebure[1]. Kidō Expert: Moreover, he is well-versed in the art of Kidō. |
High Intellect: Ueno is a literate and bright person. Great Spiritual Power: As an experienced Captain hailing from one of the Four Noble Families, Katsurō possesses a large amount of spiritual energy at his disposal. Nevertheless, he was momentarily overwhelmed when Hikari Maebure unleashed his Reiatsu[1]. |
Unmei no Ito (運命の糸, Threads of Fate): In its sealed form the Zanpakutō appears as a katana with an embellished, circular tsuba and a yellow hilt with a tassel attached to its pommel.
