Kaoru Shōki (瘴気おる, Miasma's Fragrance) is a Shinigami, the Captain of the Eighth Division and formerly the Captain of the Twelfth Division and the head of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. Her previous Lieutenant was Akira Tanaka and her current Lieutenant is Junko Ogasawara.
Appearance[]
Kaoru is an attractive woman in her 30s. She has long red hair, but she usually wears them in a bun. Her eyes are emerald and lively, but piercing.
As the 12th Division Captain, her Shihakushō was highly customised to serve as a lab coat. She wore her Captain's haori on it.
She now wears simple, non-descript clothing after her exile, foregoing her Shinigami shihakshō.
Personality[]
Shōki is a very curious and driven person. She is surprisingly energetic and friendly for her image and rank, but her behaviour usually has some unsettling vibe to it. She tends to obfuscate her undeniable intellect with silly manners[1][2], though she ocassionally becomes unexpectedly serious[1][2][3].
It appears she is very interested in the male Captains of the Gotei 13[4], and it is rumoured that they do not fascinate her only from a scientific point of view.
Thanks to her Zanpakutō powers and vividly red hair, she has earned the nickname "Lady Poinsettia".

Expert Swordsman: As a requirement to become a Captain, Kaoru has trained her sword-fighting skills to achieve expert level. Even though she is quite adept at this, she prefers other means of combat. Kidō Master: She can effectively use mid-level spells without incantations to support her Zanpakutō techniques. Every once in a while she utilises 60s-level Bakudō spells to bind her opponents, only to mock them afterward. Over time, she has advanced and expanded her knowledge in the usage of Kidō to a masterly level. Shunpo Expert: Kaoru possesses skill in Shunpo on par with average Captains. She often complains about the necessity of using it in combat, despite the fact she is quite adept at this. | |

Genius Intellect: As the Head of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, Shōki is an accomplished scientist who has made a plethora of useful inventions. During combat she is basically impervious to most kinds of tricks, and she usually can determine the secrets behind the enemy's special techniques after seeing them just once[2][3]. Great Spiritual Power: Her spiritual pressure used to be relatively low for a Captain-level combatant, but she has since brought it to a more appropriate level. It has a khaki colour[3], and becomes gaseous and poisonous in Bankai. | |
