“The rebellion of a child can crack even the strongest Tower.”
Kūzen Endō (淵藤空善, Endō Kūzen) is the fifth of the Endō children and is spiritually aware just like the rest of his siblings. Unlike them, however, Kūzen is a Fullbringer. Initially living in Karakura Town, he now lives in Fubuki City and has reluctantly teamed up with the Soul Reaper, Kotsuru Kira, to fight Hollows.
Appearance[]

Kūzen's Kazahana Academy uniform and casual outfit
Kūzen is a fair-skinned boy with blue eyes and short, nearly white, light blue hair. He primarily wears a dark purple sleeveless hoodie with a pink pattern and black baggy pants. As well as black boots. He has a small pink earring in his left ear that belonged to his mother and is the focus of his Fullbring. Other times he wears the Kazahana Academy uniform with the jacket always unbuttoned and shirt untucked.
Fifteen months after Aizen's defeat, Kūzen has grown slightly taller and gained notable muscle mass.
Twelve years after Yhwach's defeat, Kūzen is a tall adult with flatter hair. He wears a black sleeveless jacket and several bracelets.
Personality[]
Kūzen was initially a quiet but innocent and pure hearted child. Following the death of his mother, Kūzen matured quickly in order to mentally fend for himself. He is a self-described loner who enjoys staying far away from "idiots".
Due to the nature of his home life, Kūzen has a pessimistic view of the world. He believes everyone has to fend for themselves and those who rely too much on others are simply ignorant. As such, he is quick to push others away and sees himself as weak of he has to accept help.
As the younger trio who aren't involved in the details of family matters, Kūzen is very close with his older sister Shiemi and younger brother Naoe. He is proven to be a bit of a hypocrite in regards to his views in that he will do anything to help his little brother and shows kindness to his older sister. In a similar vein, Kūzen also commonly protects Pluses who are being attacked by Hollows. He seems to turn a blind eye to the fact that this goes against his world view, potentially because deep down he knows his view is actually wrong.
As a thirteen year old boy, Kūzen isn't above being intentionally annoying. He is snarky towards Kotsuru and picks on her when the opportunity arises. He mocks her for her empathetic nature and deep-seated fear of bugs. He also argues with her quite a bit, even about petty and childish things.
History[]
Kūzen was born as the fifth child to Mikado and Hayami Endō in Karakura Town. Growing up as a pampered rich kid, Kūzen lived a peaceful life despite how absent his father was. However, his mother, whom he loved very dearly, had been weak since Kūzen's birth due to being attacked by a Hollow before he was born. His mother eventually passed away when he was only four, just a year after his younger brother, Naoe, was born and Kūzen was left heartbroken without her. From then on he and his siblings were primarily raised by the family's live-in maid, Mei Takahashi.
At six years old, Kūzen finally began noticing he had developed strange powers. He was able to pull small objects towards him, which he showed off to his sister, Shiemi. While being impressed, Shiemi still urged him to not let others see him doing that, especially their father.
When Kūzen was seven he was going through some of his mother's old items that were still in the house. Finding one of her pink earrings, Shiemi urged him to keep it. He was unable to find the other half, but began wearing the one he had.
Getting fed up with the uncaring nature of his father and the constant bickering between Tsuneo and Yorito at home, Kūzen began habitually running away at ten. Mei was always the one to call authorities to have them look for him and eventually she got tired of bothering them and would simply wait for Kūzen to come home on his own several hours later. Occasionally Tsuneo would go out looking for him when it got too dark and he would often yell at Kūzen for causing everyone trouble.
The problem once became so bad that Kūzen's bedroom door and window had to have locks placed on them. Kūzen ended up breaking out through the window and disappeared for a week. He was picked up by police in Naruki City for truancy and his father arrived to retrieve him. Terrified by the presence of Mikado when his father should have been at work, Kūzen begged to officers to be allowed to not go home. He was dragged into the car by his father and the ride home was completely silent.
When they arrived back home in Karakura Town, Mikado's yelling struck pure fear into Kūzen. Mei and Shiemi both cried at seeing him again and knowing he was safe. Seeing how scary his father could truly get and how much he had upset Mei and Shiemi, Kūzen never ran away again.
Plot[]
Welcome to Fubuki City Arc[]
When Kūzen arrives home from school with Naoe, he is met with the rest of the family gathered in the living room. With all six kids present, Mikado announces that due to matters pertaining to the family business, they all will be moving up north to Fubuki City in Hokkaido. Everyone except Shiemi and Naoe complain, but Mikado silences his children.
When he begins attending Kazahana Academy, Kūzen is greeted by his classmate, Wakana Tomie, a girl in the school's music program. He dismisses her offer of friendship, but she refuses to give up and follows him around anyway.
A week into living in Fubuki City, Kūzen comes across a Hollow chasing a Plus. He jumps in with his Fullbring to protect the Plus and begins fighting the Hollow. However, it proves to be stronger than he expected and Kūzen iss knocked to the ground. Before the Hollow can kill him, it is dispatched by Kotsuru Kira, who comes to Kūzen's rescue. Kotsuru suspects Kūzen of being a Hollow due to his powers and she tries to interrogate him, but he refuses to answer her and leaves, not even thanking her for saving him.
The next day at school, Kotsuru is introduced as a new student in Kūzen's class. He is shocked to see her and tries to avoid her, but she corners him outside class. Kotsuru proclaims she will follow him around everywhere to learn about him and his powers and he runs away from her. After school, Kūzen is leaving campus with Wakana when Wakana notices Kotsuru tailing them. Kūzen tells her to leave the matter alone, but Wakana invites Kotsuru to walk with them, to which Kotsuru agrees.
Upon learning that Kūzen and Kotsuru are not in after-school clubs yet, Wakana invites both of them to the music club, to which Kūzen refuses and Kotsuru claims she has no musical talent. Despite their protests, Wakana forces them both to join the music club. Assuming it will be easy to learn, Kūzen picks the keyboard to practice.
After Kūzen and Kotsuru rescue fellow classmate, Ino Kuishi, from an attempted Hollow possession Wakana asks him to join the music club with them upon learning he can play the drums. Together, they form a band that Wakana names "vive▪︎le▪︎vide".
Mother Arc[]
While out in town with Wakana and Kotsuru, Kūzen gets a call from Iyori telling him their father was in an accident and is at the hospital. Wakana offers to have her chauffer take him there, but he turns down the offer as Iyori intends to pick him up. Wakana and Kotsuru are left behind to worry about him as he leaves. Kūzen arrives at the hospital with Iyori and Naoe. Shiemi is already there, telling him Tsuneo just left and Yorito refused to come. While Iyori takes Naoe in the room to see Mikado, Kūzen hesitates to go in, unsure if he really wants to see his father. He asks Shiemi what condition he's in and she informs him their father should recover just fine. Kūzen then decides to wait for Iyori to take him home instead.
After Mikado fully recovers and is released from the hospital, the whole family goes out together with Kūzen being forced to join them. While out, he is met by Kotsuru, who is searching for a strong Hollow in the area. Kūzen offers to join her just so he can get away from his family but Kotsuru refuses his help, claiming spending time with his family should be more important and talks a bit about her own family. Annoyed at hearing about such a nice family from Kotsuru, Kūzen leaves her be to go back to his family.
Naoe approaches Kūzen and tells his brother that he feels like something bad is going to happen. Knowing Naoe's premonitions are always right, Kūzen takes Naoe with him to go look for Kotsuru. Hearing Shiemi scream, Kūzen tells Naoe to keep looking for Kotsuru while he goes back to their siblings. He returns to find a large Hollow holding up Mikado by the throat and Iyori trying to attack it. Kūzen blocks an attack meant for Iyori and the Hollow releases Mikado. Kūzen demands his siblings stay back while he fights it and Tsuneo and Shiemi try to help their father. The Hollow slips past Kūzen and pierces Mikado, releasing his Soul from his body. Not strong enough to stop it, the Hollow devours Mikado's Soul in front of them.
Naoe returns with Kotsuru and she prevents the Hollow from hurting Tsuneo and Shiemi. Satied by Mikado's Soul, the Hollow introduces herself as Mother and thanks her children for being present to watch her enact revenge on their father. Realizing Mother is their actual mother, Hayami, as a Hollow, Kūzen falls into a despair at seeing what she's become. She reveals to her children that following her worsening health, Mikado shoved her into a hospital and neglected her needs, barely giving the doctors permission to do what work was needed to keep her alive, ultimately resulting in her death. Having become a Hollow when he took the children away from Karakura Town, she followed them to Fubuki City with the intent of getting revenge on Mikado.
Distraught at what his own mother has become, Kūzen is unable to bring himself to fight her. Kotsuru protects him and yells at him to get it together--that the two of them are the only ones who can fight her, but Kūzen still can't bring himself to hurt his mother. Iyori drags him aside and tries to convince him that defeating her is the only way to save her. Naoe begs Kūzen to save their mother and Kūzen finally regains his will to fight. He comes to Kotsuru's aid and unlocks Shifting Abyss' shuriken form to defeat Mother. With a final strike from Kotsuru, Mother is killed and Hayami's Soul passes on to Soul Society.
However, Mikado is confirmed dead and nothing can be done for him. Hours after his body is taken away, the family and Kotsuru watch all televisions in the city show the same broadcast of The Guard announcing to the whole city that they are taking full control of it for everyone's own good.
The Guard Arc[]
A public battle results in Cynthia's arrest and Yorito coming to Kūzen, Kotsuru, and the others for assistance in saving her.
They head to the police station where Kūzen and Yorito leave Cynthia's rescue to the Soul Reapers. However, they are interrupted by the abrupt arrival of The Guard. Kūzen is cornered by Bia Gomasaki, who he recognizes as a local news reporter. Realizing that Bia has no intention of letting him walking away with his life, Kūzen battles Bia. He only intends to subdue her, but she nearly manages to kill him, resulting in Kūzen unlocking Shifting Abyss' scythe form for the first time. Finally bringing Bia to her knees, Kūzen chains her to the building so she can be arrested later. He takes her RVC as well so it won't end up in police custody.
While Kūzen battled Bia Gomasaki, Kotsuru is fighting Anosuke Delgado, and later they defeat Shuya Yoruhisa together. Their battle results in Shuya being inadvertently sent to Hueco Mundo.
Tsuneo's Decision Arc[]
Kūzen approaches Yorito with Bia's RVC, telling his brother that he took it from her back at the police station, but he doesn't really know what to do with it. He suggests possibly giving it Cynthia. Yorito thinks that would be an acceptable idea so Kūzen hands it over to Yorito for him to give to Cynthia later.
After Tsuneo discovers that Itsuki is their younger half-brother and subsequently snaps, he is goaded into taking action by Shuya. After Tsuneo kidnaps Itsuki and Shuya reveals he has returned from Hueco Mundo with the Arrancar, Hojan Unomunna, under his command, Kūzen, Kotsuru, and the others attempt to defeat the trio.
Shuya and Hojan Arc[]
With Tsuneo subdued and Itsuki rescued, Kūzen plays a large role in preventing Hojan from destroying all of Fubuki City after Shuya admitted he was only being used as a tool.
Tenko is ultimately killed by Hojan and Izuru arrives with Momo Hinamori and Shūhei Hisagi to assist them in the battle.
Hunger Arc[]
Kūzen wakes up one day fifteen months later to find himself incredibly hungry. He eats a large breakfast, but finds that it does nothing for his hunger. Wakana gives him half her lunch at school in the hopes it'll help him. That night, Kūzen joins Kotsuru to track down a Hollow and when Kūzen defeats, he suddenly feels full. Unsure of the correlation, Kūzen chooses not to mention it to Kotsuru.
Realizing Hollows are the only thing that can resolve his growing hunger, Kūzen begins sneaking out at night to fight and absorb Hollows, not recognizing the harm it's doing to his body. Once Kūzen absorbs too many, he starts to lose control of himself as the Hollows he absorbed try to take over his body. He keeps it a secret from everyone else, but the others notice something is off about him anyway.
As Kūzen finally starts to Hollowfy, his siblings, Kotsuru, Mona, Ritsu, Wakana, and Cynthia all try to subdue him. He is finally freed from the control of the Hollows by Kotsuru stabbing him and he loses his Fullbring as a result.
The Thousand-Year Blood War Arc[]
When Kotsuru receives word of the Wandenreich Invasion in Soul Society, Kūzen asks her if she wants to return home.
When the war ends, Kūzen suggests Kotsuru take as long of a break from her guardianship as she needs and he'll ask Cynthia to take care of keeping Fubuki City safe while she's gone.
Echoing Jaws of Hell Arc[]
While enjoying a day out in the city with Wakana, Kūzen suddenly senses something wrong and Wakana asks if he's alright. A few moments later, Shiemi calls him, asking if he sensed it too. Shiemi says she'll call Yorito as well to ask him about it and then hangs up. Kūzen stares up at the sky and hopes for nothing bad to happen soon.
Powers & Abilities[]
Spiritual Awareness: Inherited from his mother, Kūzen is capable of clearly seeing Pluses, Hollows, Soul Reapers, and other supernatural phenomena. He is capable of recognizing the Reiatsu of each of his siblings individually and determining their approximate locations.
High-Speed Movement: As a Fullbringer, Kūzen can use his abilities on both the ground beneath his feet to make it elastic and alter the air around him to increase his own speed.
Hollow Absorption: With each Hollow that Kūzen slays with his Fullbring, he absorbs it through his blade similar to the way Hollows will eventually begin eating each other. As he absorbs more and more Hollows, Kūzen's spiritual power slowly increases.
Great Spiritual Power: Kūzen has enough spiritual power to put up a strong fight against many basic Hollows. Initially, he is easily overwhelmed by the spiritual power of Soul Reapers, such as Kotsuru, but as he absorbs Hollows his spiritual power grows stronger. His Reiatsu color is dark purple.
Fullbring[]
Shifting Abyss (シフティング • アビス, Shifutingu Abisu): Kūzen's Fullbring manifests itself in his mother's earring, which he can transform into multiple different forms. Each form leaves behind a black matter outlined in neon pink and blue for a few seconds when it moves.
- Abyss Jump (アビス • ジャンプ, Abisu Janpu): The primary ability of Shifting Abyss, Abyss Jump, is first used in Kūzen and Kotsuru's fight against Shuya Yoruhisa. The black matter created by Shifting Abyss' movement is formed together to create a Garganta similar to a Gillian's Kūmon but much smaller. Kūzen can use these small Gargantas to warp short distances, allowing him to escape attacks and surprise his opponent from behind. Other people are also able to enter these Gargantas, such as when Shuya was pushed through one. Due to the Hollow nature of a Fullbring, these Gargantas will lead to Hueco Mundo if Kūzen doesn't create an exit. All of Shifting Abyss' forms are capable of using Abyss Jump.
- Knife Form: This is the initial form of Shifting Abyss that Kūzen has access to. His primary fighting style with it is up close and fast movements to quickly slash his opponent.
- Abyss Ribbon (アビス • リボン, Abisu Ribon): The black matter formed by Shifting Abyss' movement can be extended and its formation solidified momentarily to create ribbons with multiple uses. Kūzen can wrap them around parts of his opponent such as the wrist or ankle to trap his opponent and hold them still or pull them closer to him. They can also be propelled by Shifting Abyss' swings to create long range projectile-like attacks to make up for the Knife Form's short reach.
- Shuriken Form: This is the second form of Shifting Abyss and the first form that Kūzen gains after growing stronger through his fight with the Hollow, Mother. His primary fighting style with them is from a distance and utilizing overwhelming numbers.
- Abyss Piercing Crush (アビス • ピアス • クラッシュ, Abisu Piasu Kurasshu): Kūzen summons dozens of shuriken from Shifting Abyss' black matter that all pierce into his target at once and cover it with the black matter. Once the target is fully consumed by it, the shuriken all eject themselves in an explosion of the matter.
- Scythe Form: This is the final form of Shifting Abyss and the second form that Kūzen gains after growing stronger through his fight with Bia Gomasaki. His primary fighting style with it is slow but hard hitting swings and counter attacking.
- Abyss Return Swing (アビス • リターン • スイング, Abisu Ritān Suingu): When an opponent's attack is blocked by the scythe form, the power is absorbed by Shifting Abyss and strengthens Kūzen's next swing. When the attack lands, it results in an explosion of the black matter created by Shifting Abyss’ movement and dissipates after a few seconds.
- Abyss Blast (アビス • ブラスト, Abisu Burasuto): Shifting Abyss' final and strongest ability that Kūzen first accesses during his fight against Hojan Unomunna. Abyss Blast is usable by itself and does not require the use of any of Shifting Abyss' forms. Kūzen uses his hand to gather together black matter and releases it as a single large blast directed at his target. It is comparable to a Cero and its color is black with a neon blue and pink outline.
Weaknesses[]
- As a child, Kūzen can be easily physically overpowered by adults, particularly strong ones, like Anosuke Delgado.
- When Kūzen absorbs the Hollows he kills with his Fullbring it slowly poisons his body due to him being Human. Similar to the way multiple Hollows exist inside the bodies of Gillians and Adjuchas-class Hollows, the Hollows he absorbs still exist in some form inside him. This puts Kūzen at risk of being consumed by them from the inside and potentially turning into a Hollow himself. The more he absorbs, the stronger the Hollow he'll turn into can become, potentially even evolving into at least an Adjuchas.
- Kūzen develops an intense hunger from absorbing too many Hollows. Nothing he eats can saite the hunger and it is only briefly held back by absorbing another Hollow. Eventually weaker Hollows do nothing for his hunger and he must absorb stronger ones.
Fullbring[]
- Being self taught on how to use his Fullbring, Kūzen is very inexperienced and has to figure out his powers by himself. He is prone to not fully understanding what his own powers can do, especially when he uses a new ability for the first time.
- With the exception his Abyss Ribbon attack, Shifting Abyss' Knife Form suffers from a lack of reach. Kūzen must be up close to his target to be the most effective and he struggles against multiple opponents.
- Shifting Abyss' Shuriken Form requires distance to perform optimally, meaning close quarters combat and short range but fast opponents make it difficult for him to fight to the best of his ability.
- With how slow and heavy Shifting Abyss' Scythe Form is, Kūzen is very prone to opposing attacks if he doesn't utilize Abyss Return Swing.
- Abyss Blast requires so much energy and has such a strong knockback for Kūzen that he must rest afterward, leaving him vulnerable while he recovers.
