Jojishi is a young looking man with average height and a light physical build; lacking any real muscle or fat across his body. He has pale, sickly looking skin and dark blonde hair that hides the entire right side of his face, his hair is messy and unkempt from lack of care. He has hazel coloured eyes that are somewhat oval-like in shape, constantly half lidded out of tiredness. There are slight depressions in the skin below his eyes, where the skin is shaded purple to further hint at his sleepless lifestyle. He has pronounced cheekbones that have a habit of making him look emaciated. Although long at the bridge, the end of his nose is rather stubbly. His lips are short with a faded red complexion. His chin and jawline are rounded to a degree giving the lower part of his head some egg-like elements as some would say. His left arm is prosthetic and appears to be made of wood, with obvious joints along the fingers, wrist, elbow and shoulder. He dresses up in the standard Shinigami uniform though with an inverted colour scheme, like that of the Arrancar that followed Sōsuke Aizen. He also wears a white labcoat on top of the uniform like others of the 12th Division.
Jojishi is a tireless and yet wholly unmotivated individual, he is sluggish and very rarely ever more than half awake. He has a tendency to only pay the slightest inkling of attention to those around him, often just nodding off in the middle of a conversation. He lacks any kind of social graces nor the effort to feign interest in the problems of others, though he is more than happy to help with something he finds interesting, or on the bargain of using others for experimentation. Even then, he never puts in a full effort to the situation and continues to sluggishly do as he would. Though he is slow and prone to falling asleep mid sentence, he is nonetheless a hard working soul in that he never actually sleeps of his own volition and continues at a task until it reaches completion, for this he is seen as reliable if only as a fallback solution to ones problems.
Few things can properly motivate Jojishi though the most prominent is his desire to experiment on the physical body. Having grown bored of self experimentation with which he believes he has reached the limit of, he seeks to branch out by experimenting on other persons, a notion that doesn't often sit very well with others. Though he doesn't wish to "impose" himself on others over the matter, it is often the only way to deal with him in any way, he joined the 12th Division exclusively for the chance that he might someday be able to dissect the body of its Captain. He claims to work well alongside other members of his division, like Satoru Kyōfu or Hachū Bōkunō because of his desire to conduct tests on their bodies as well. In addition to using it as a positive motivator for himself, he also uses it as a way to threaten his enemies often shouting out that he'll dissect those that get in his way. He happens to have an odd fixation with the 33rd Hadō spell, Shakkahō often taking it to be perfect and occassionally worshipping its "perfect red light". He'll go so far to exemplify its uses and outright ignore its flaws, it is also the only Kidō spell that he refuses to modify, as in his own mind it is already the perfect spell.
In battle Jojishi likes to exaggerate his own traits, alongside a well developed facade based on traits that the public would identify with psycho- or sociopaths. He talks about performing dissections on his opponents in graphic detail, slowly going through each individual process of what he will do to them once he wins, though he promises to allow them to remain alive so that they might experience it themselves. He couples this with a rather indomitable physical endurance, allowing him to shrug off wounds to give off a "nigh unkillable" vibe that would heighten the fear factor he can instill in those he fights. Though he ignores his wounds, he will just as well make use of his blood as a weapon or lick it from the opened wounds to repulse others. Whilst he does it for effect, he ultimately dislikes the practice, citing that "[his] blood tastes like ass". He has a rather vibrant fighting style filled with over enthusiastic sword motions with an unusual amount of showmanship, if only to heighten the obvious fact that he knows how to wield his sword well. He claims that it adds a length of surreality to the fight, in order to make his foe's head spin.
Jojishi speaks using the personal pronoun onore (己, Lit. Oneself), an archaic word that is considered humble when used in the first person but hostile if used in second person, Jojishi tends towards the latter regardless of whether he is in the presence of enemies or those he would consider allies and friends. Aside from the study of spiritual bodies, his field of study is what he considers to be the "science" of the spiritual realms, studying how everything works, from spiritual particles to the barriers that prevent regular travel between places such as Soul Society and Hueco Mundo. He also applies his studies in attempts to get over or manipulate the results towards his own ends. When not studying his specific fields, or attempting to cut open other people, he spends his free time making small candies that he hands off to others to do with as they see fit due to the fact that he is not allowed to leave the Seireitei by order of Central 46, he had run a sweet shop in one of the Southern Rukongai districts that were relatively close to the Seireitei prior to his incarceration in the Maggot's Nest and subsquent joining of the Gotei. His making sweets is a habit that he claims to have trouble letting go, wishing to peddle the few that he makes outside of the Seireitei some day in the future. He also likes to go out fishing, using a large lake near the Ninth Division compound to wax that particular hobby.
Powers & Abilities
Enhanced Strength: Jojishi has well developed physical strength to pull off feats that are typically physically impossible, even for other Shinigami. He casually tosses around insane weights and counters oncoming oversized projectiles by simply pushing against their momentum.
Enhanced Durability: Jojishi is capable of withstanding great punishment, even whilst a simple untrained soul incapable of wielding his spiritual power, it took more than one Shinigami Lieutenant to end his original rampage through the streets of the Rukongai thanks in part to his ability to take the oncoming blows of other Shinigami with little difficulty. He tends to ignore most of the injuries he suffers, allowing them to do little in the way of hampering him, often as a means of psychologically battling his opponents.
Expert Scientist/Inventor: Jojishi's primary fields of expertise are what he likes to call the Spiritual Sciences (霊学, Reigaku), a field that focuses on the study and application of developments pertaining to the spiritual worlds such as the issues between Reishi (霊子, Spirit Particles) and atoms that form from Kishi (器子, Holdlet(s)), or how the barriers that keep each realm seperate from one another operate. Application in this particular field are often spent on overcoming the limitations present between the spiritual world and the living world or in order to facilitate another effect, such is the case with Jojishi's device that opens a way into Hueco Mundo for the Gotei 13, a feat considered extremely difficult and impossible by regular means for the Shinigami. His other field of study is that of bio-engineering, working on the body of himself and others in order to modify them to make them better than naturally intended. This is often simply an excuse on his part to dissect and study others, even beings such as Quincy or Hollows, though he is actually quite capable at modification should he choose to make use of it.
Kidō Expert: One of the four arts of Zankensoki, the primary combat fields of the Shinigami, Kidō is a combat form based on the incanting of spells by utilizing ones own Reiryoku. Primarily Kidō spells fall into either of two categories, Hadō (破道, Way of Destruction) which are spells geared towards causing damage to enemies, or Bakudō (縛道, Way of Binding) which is a more broad field focusing on defense, immobilization or other effects with seals and barriers making up a particular subset of these spells. There are spells that fall outside of the typical classifications such as Kaidō (回道, Turn Way) which covers Kidō that are used to heal the wounds of others. Jojishi is primarily skilled in the use of Hadō with spells as high as Hadō #54. maintaining extraordinary power even when used without incantation though he could use Bakudō spells up to Bakudō #39. just as effectively. His primary spell is Hadō #31. Shakkahō which he has mastered to such a degree that its firepower is comparable to spells in the 70 range. Though he refuses to modify it like the other Kidō he wields, he still refers to it by a unique name; Ōrashī Shakkahō (王赤火砲, Kingly Red Fire Cannon). Like his partner in combat, Jojishi uses Kidō as his primary form of offense and defense though in contrast to Hachū, Jojishi prefers to make use of Kaizō Kidō (改造鬼道, Modified Demon/Spirit Way), creating more powerful variations of existing spells in order to push the limit of what each spell is usually capable of.
Expert Swordsman: One of of the four basic schools of Shinigami combat, a part of the Zankensoki. Zanjutsu is the primary field of combat for use of a Zanpakutō and the most likely for any Shinigami to become an expert in outside of those who consciously choose to specialize in something else. Whilst primarily governing over sword combat it also extends to a great number of other fields focusing on weaponry, expanded constantly by Shinigami bringing in new forms of study to keep up with the unique forms of their Zanpakutō, this includes anything from tantōjutsu to sōjutsu and all other number of weapon styles. In addition to styles that cover the use of specific weapons, Zanjutsu also deals with various arts within itself such as Kendō (剣道, Kendo; "Way of The Sword"). Jojishi is no slouch in this field of combat, despite his overall preference for Kidō he has still obtained a great level of skill in its forms. He had self taught himself many of the techniques of Zanjutsu prior to even becoming a Shinigami, having found a hill in the 1st Western Rukongai that overlooked the training ground of the 11th Division in the Seireitei. He further used Zanjutsu in his rampage through the Rukongai and pressured several Shinigami prior to being taken down by a pair of Lieutenants.
Shunpo Practitioner: Hohō is one of the four basic skills of the Shinigami and one of the most often used right behind Zanjutsu. It is the combat skill that covers movement, footwork in particular. It has counterparts in the Quincy Hirenkyaku and Arrancar Sonído. Through training and concentration one can increase the speed that Hohō grants them as well as govern how skilled they are with the techniques within this specific art. The most important of which is Shunpo (瞬歩, Flash Steps), a technique that allows its practitioners to move faster than the eye can follow, appearing akin to teleportation to those not in the know. The foremost masters of Shunpo are often regailed through out the Seireitei for their skill, such was the case with Tenjirō Kirinji who was nicknamed "Lightning-Fast Tenjirō" (雷迅の天示郎, Raijin no Tenjirō) before his ascension to the Royal Guard, and, Nephthys who carries the nickname "Godspeed" (速神, Sokushin). Further still, Shunpo has its own techniques known as the Way of Onmitsu (隠密歩法, Omitsu Shunpo) that provide more specific combat applications to the otherwise supplementary skill. Jojishi is effective at using Shunpo, some say he is actually better than he lets on, but otherwise he can match those capable of utilizing Bringer Light with his current shown capabilities.
High Spiritual Power: All Spiritual beings, and Humans, have some degree of Reiryoku within themselves. When that degree is over a certain limit the possessor is granted all kinds of abilities of supernatural nature which are generally more powerful the higher that degree is. One thing available to all spiritual beings is the ability to emit Reiatsu (霊圧, Spiritual Pressure) and is how others most often quantify the power of others when compared to the pressure they can emit. Battles between spiritual beings are decided purely by the strength of ones spiritual power, with a large enough gap between them making one side practically invulnerable whilst the other would be easily wiped out by simple attacks, if not the side effects of spiritual pressure alone. Even whilst untrained Jojishi's spiritual power was strong enough that he could go toe-to-toe with two Shinigami Lieutenants with no detrimental effects. He has stood in the face of his Captain's fully released spiritual energy and was still capable of moving. His Reiatsu is gray in colour.
Saigo no Gainen (最後の概念, One Last Notion): A regular katana with a four pronged cross guard in the shape of the manji symbol. Both the hilt and sheath are red in colour.
- Jojishi's name can be translated as "Epic" (叙事詩, Jojishi) and "Madman" (狂人, Kyōjin).
- The colour associated with Jojishi is Black Olive, a shade of black, which in Japanese colour culture, represents death, unhappiness, evil, bad luck, and, style.
- His birthday is an obvious reference to his dark nature harkening to Halloween. This makes him a Scorpio.
- The design for Saigo no Gainen's Shikai form is based upon a shotgun skin found in The Secret World, a dark fantasy MMO with a modern day setting, designed by Funcom.
