Izuna Retsugama (激鎌 飯綱, Retsugama Izuna) is the newly instated prodigal Captain of the Eighth Division following the Thousand-Year Blood War with the Quincy. Despite his young age and stature, his capabilities as a genius enabled him to achieve the position most Shinigami can only ever aspire towards. However, the process wasn't as simple as him attaining the position with the Captain Proficiency Test.
After all, with the power vacuum left by the deaths of Captains Ōtoribashi and Muguruma, Lieutenant Hisagi and the permanent loss of Captain Komamura's power, the Gotei 13 were forced to take desperate measures to replace their military's pillars. While Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai had the skill and power necessary to replace two Captains, there was still one Captain-level position open.
Eventually, Shunsui Kyōraku would use a secret training regime designed by Kisuke Urahara — inspired by the Royal Guard — and accelerate the growth of certain seated officers. Among these soldiers was Izuna who, as a 3rd Seat, managed to gain the skill necessary to eventually replace Shunsui's position as the Eighth Division Captain, thus leading him to where he is now.
