Hohō (歩法, Agility; Viz "Fast Movement"; lit. "step method") is the name given to one of the four combat skills of the Shinigami, which relates directly to footwork. Hohō is an important skill for most Shinigami, and is one of their four basic fighting styles. The agility and speed of Hohō can be enhanced and improved through simple mastery, concentration, or training. The foremost practitioners of this technique are those assigned to the Onmitsukidō, though certain individuals may surpass even them, examples being Captain-class combatants.
Enhanced Physical Abilities: Hohō literally translates into "Agility", which requires a combination of balance, coordination, speed, reflexes, strength, endurance and stamina to be employed as efficiently as possible. Henceforth, well-trained masters of high-speed movement techniques like Shunpo, exhibit a natural strengthening within these fields. This was masterfully demonstrated by Shunpo legend Yoruichi Shihōin during her fight against Sōsuke Aizen, where her concentrated blows proved to be highly destructive, capable of destroying an entire city block.
Acrobatics: An art few actual Hohō masters have portrayed, seeing it as useless ostentation, yet one that proves highly advantageous in battle when utilized correctly. It can be used to dodge attacks even when falling or in mid-air or to outmaneuver slower, more clumsy adversaries.
Shunpo (瞬歩, Flash steps) is the greatest expression of the Hohō technique. However, there are variations even within Shunpo that only master Hohō practitioners can use, or even be aware of. It is a movement technique that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. As speed is the main point of the technique the method is best characterized by how fast one can get from point A to point B in the least amount of steps. Training and skill are what determines how fast a user of Shunpo can move; those of little skill in the technique or those who haven't used it an extended amount of time would obviously be out of practice, causing those individuals to be considerably slower, which requires the use of more steps to move the same distance and become winded far easier in a shorter amount of time.
|Gomakashi (ごまかし, "Smoke and Mirrors")||An easily performed Shunpo technique which is usually the first advancement practitioners make in their skills. Gomakashi is taught within the Shinō and Yuengiri Academies as a precursor to more advanced Shunpo skills. Gomakashi involves a basic one-to-three step movement under cover of smoke, which is usually created via Sekienton or, control depending, reiryoku.|
|Senka (閃花, "Flash Blossom")||A special Shunpo technique where one moves behind the opponent to directly attack and seal one's "Saketsu" (鎖結, Chain Binding) and "Hakusui" (鎖結, Soul Sleep) in two rapid stabs. The movement is so fast that an opponent may not be able to tell whether they were attacked from the front or the back and even an outside observer may find it impossible to tell what the movements are.|
|Hikarakuyō (飛花落葉, "Blossoms Fall and Leaves Scatter")||A special Shunpo technique where the user, through manipulation of ones spiritual energy flow, accelerates their speed to the point where their movements cause semi-sentient afterimages to form from behind them and continues to follow the user, mimicking their movements entirely. They then continue this enhanced flow for brief periods of time. The user is then able to deceive the opponent of their true position, assaulting them with several attacks at their nervous system from various angles in order for their opponent to be completely incapacitated.|
|Way of Onmitsu, 1st of the Shihō||Shihō no Saisho - Tonbo (死楓の最初•蜻蛉; "First of the Shihō - Dragonfly, referencing their flying"): This technique allows the user to appear at several places at the same time, generating a set number of "speed-clones" depending on their level of mastery. These are indistinguishable from the user's true self and mimic his movements, but generally do not last very long. It is a basic technique, known by all Onmitsukidō members, and has been portrayed namelessly by both Yoruichi Shihōin and Suì-Fēng during their age.|
|Way of Onmitsu, 3rd of the Shihō||Shihō no San - Utsusemi (空蝉, Cicada, referencing their molting): It allows for a movement at great speed leaving an afterimage behind. The afterimage may even appear to have taken damage. Certain individuals may even be able to apply their elemental reiatsu to the technique, inflicting damage when the afterimage fades.|
|Way of Onmitsu, 5ft of the Shihō||Hanmyōka (死楓の五•ハンミョウ科; "Fifth of the Shihō - Tiger Beetle, referencing their running"): Speeding up the spiritual flow within their bodies drastically, the user enhances their speed to a point where they become invisible to the naked eye. Motions can only be performed in a straight line and when the user comes to a standing-still, their pathway is torn apart. Visibility for the user during the technique is reduced to near zero, requiring running in short bursts to re-orient themselves as they chase down their target.|
|Way of Onmitsu, 10th of the Shihō||Shihō no Jū - Kurumushi (死楓の十•車虫; Tenth of the Shihō - Wheel Bug, referencing their way of killing): A particularly cruel technique, which is advised against within the Onmitsukidō due the possible grievous backlash. It consists of a single long "step" extending way past the opponent, yet performed inches near the latter, with the dominant hand held in tegatana position. The said hand cleaves through the air as the movement is performed, and when the user comes to a hold, causes an enormous shockwave to ripple through the pathway in it's wake. Because the hand is designed to be next to the opponent when the technique is utilized, the latter receives the full brunt of this force, capable of completely ripping open the chest area and exposing the vital organs. However, should the opponent side-step in time or the technique simply be performed to far away from the intended victim's body, the user himself receives the impact, although in his back and thus less lethal, but still enough to render him incapable of fighting for a serious period of time.|
Sonído (響転 (ソニード), Sonīdo; Spanish for "Sound", Japanese for "Sound Ceremony"). An Arrancar's high speed movement technique, which is equivalent to the Shinigami's Shunpo. In terms of speed, they are roughly equal; though Sonído appears to be more instinctual than Hohō, requiring no previous knowledge to perform. It also makes a different sound; rather than the swishing or sometimes silent Shunpo of the Shinigami, Sonído makes a booming or static sound.
|Gemelos Sonído (双児響転 (ヘメロス・ソニード), Hemerosu Sonīdo; Spanish for "Sound Twins", Japanese for "Twins Sound Ceremony")||Zommari Rureaux is the only Arrancar shown to have been able to use this technique, though in later years it became more widespread. It allows the user to create clone-like afterimages of himself. Up to five clones can be created using this technique, with more depending on individual skill. Because of this, Zommari claims that he was the fastest Espada.|
Hirenkyaku (飛廉脚; lit: "Flying Screen Step/God Step", Viz: "Flying Bamboo-Blind Leg") is a method which Quincy use to travel quickly over short distances. Essentially, it is the Quincy equivalent to the Shinigami's Shunpo, or the Arrancar's Sonído. Uryū Ishida implied that its speed is superior to Shunpo or Sonido, though Mayuri Kurotsuchi's superior speed suggests that this is just a generalization.
|Platform Manifestation||Upon entering Hueco Mundo through the Garganta, Ichigo Kurosaki and Chad noticed that Uryū apparently had a platform of reishi under his feet. Ichigo and Sado had trouble controlling their reiatsu on the path they were given, while he used an instance of Hirenkyaku in order to make his own individual platform. Later on Uryū used the technique to elevate himself and Orihime Inoue through the hole Ulquiorra Cifer created in the artificial sky, and above the dome of Las Noches. He reveals that he only recently realized he could use the technique outside Garganta, and in Hueco Mundo itself, halfway to Las Noches. He also laments the fact that if he had known sooner, he might have been of some use on the battlefield. It is known that particularly knowledgeable Quincy (or those who like experimenting with their powers), can use this variation of Hirenkyaku; though whether it can be used outside of Hueco Mundo, within Soul Society, or the Human World is unknown.|
Fullbring-Induced High-Speed Movement: The flickering of Bringer Light (完現光 (ブリンガーライト), "Kangen Hikari (Buringā Raito)"; lit. "Full Manifestation Light"): From Fullbring-Induced High-Speed Movement is, the preliminary action for the next High-Speed Movement. It signifies that one is beginning to master Fullbring. Fullbring can allow a user to perform an amplified jump by fullbringing the concrete. It also allows a user to Fullbring the "Air" mid-jump and use it to accelerate. To be capable of such uses of Fullbring is to be in the beginning of mastery of Fullbring. Bringer Light is a light green form of spiritual energy.
Mueishō (無影翔, Shadowless Flight) is a method which Onmyouji use to achieve feats of high-speed movement comparable to the likes of Shunpo and Sonído. By guiding the reiatsu flow to the soles of their feet, Onmyouji are able to reduce the friction between two physical elements, allowing them to slide against any surface and thus increase their movement speed.
Kassō (滑走, Glide) is the Tsuji equivalent to Shunpo, Hirenkyaku and Sonído, enabling for high-speed movement to be performed. It is generally believed to surpass the latter techniques though this could merely be a generalization.
Accelero (??, Latin for Accelerate): A ShugoTenshi's high speed movement technique, which is equivalent to an Arrancar's Sonido. In terms of speed, they are both pretty much equal; though Accelero is more of an instinctual technique, it requires curtain knowledge to fully grasp and understand the technique. The technique can be accidentally confused for an Arrancar's Sonido being, that the Accelero sounds more like a high-pitched boom almost slightly like firing a Cero. Another would be that when they use this technique they seem to fade into a white version of shunpo.
