Bakudō #86. Hakōaki (爬行空き, lit. "Crawling Gap") is a relatively recent addition to the Central 198, it was developed by the Jishōka division of the Kidō Corps. Its classified as being an anti-teleportation spell, and was specifically designed for that purpose.

Overview

Teleportation is a potent effect that often, but not always, is achieved through the use of magic. It allows an individual to cross great distances without occupying the space inbetween, and in most cases it also resolves instantaneously, leaving very little room for a foe to react. Assassins, Sorcerers and certain users of peculiar techniques have the ability to Teleport, and this has caused pursuing Shinigami much trouble.

Likewise, such abilities have a tendency of allowing an opponent easy infiltration into enemy ranks to take care of key officers quickly; to ensure that a scenario such as that wouldn't, the spell Hakōaki was devised by the Kidō Corps. When cast, Hakōaki disrupts teleportation within a specified area by delaying the point of entry or by corrupting its destination to be somewhere farther away than intended. Such that, rather than appear behind the Kido User as intended, the subject might appear several yards away in a random direction.

Although its aim is quite specific, the spell has proven itself invaluable for its ability to not only prevent Shinigami officials from being assassinated by adversaries in possession of unusual powers. But its also ensured that many a runaway user of magic has been apprehended successfully, whereas it once might've been difficult to do so. Its also useful in ensuring that attacks land on foes who have grown accustomed to use teleportation to evade attacks. Because while within the spells borders and attempting to move out, the spell delays the effect by several seconds, which usually leads to the subjects untimely death and transports their remains instead.
