First Appearance

Hachū Bōkunō (暴君王爬虫, Bōkunō Hachū) is a Shinigami and officer of the Twelfth Division, holding the Sixth Seat. His Captain is Jaromira Hizakura.

Appearance[]

Hachū is an anthropomorphic reptile, with resemblance to the Tuatara species of rhynchocephalia, he is incredibly tall and considered the tallest man in the Seireitei barring the Gatekeepers. The general shape of his head is that of an arrowhead, with his face narrowing in the further it stretches. He has a long snout with a pair of rounded nostrils on the front, only a few centimeteres above his mouth. His mouth lacks lips, leaving his sharp pointed rows of teeth visible at all times. Hachū's tongue is forked. His eyes rest beneath a set of pronounced ridges that run across the upper part of his head, taking an impromptu role as brows. His eyes are yellow in colouration and posses slitted pupils. A pair of horns rest on the highest point at the back of his head and form a crown that leads down the back of his head and neck. His body is covered in tightly knit blue scales with the scales on his jaw, the front of his neck and chest being a lighter shade than the rest. He has large hands with elongated digits numbering four in total, taking the general shape of a human hand. His legs generally stand in a digitigrade posture with three claws on either foot. He has a long tail that, like his face, narrows in the further out it stretches. He adorns the typical Shinigami uniform, though the sleeves are larger on account of the size of his hands. He lacks footwear that can properly fit his reptillian feet and tops the uniform off with a white laboratory coat.

Personality[]

Hachū is very polite to those around him, speaking formally at almost all times, though with a deliberate slowness in part due to his unfamiliarity with those outside of his clan. He refers to others either with -Jō (上, Superior), or -Ko (公, Subordinate), a common trait of those from the 41st Western Rukongai he claims. Those he is familiar with, or has high respect for, garner more normal forms of honorific from him, such is the case with Jaromira Hizakura whom he refers to as "Jaromira-taichō" (隊長, Captain). He is generally distant to those around him, preferring to be off on his own as despite his great size and reptilian form, he is rather shy. He prefers to work on his own and remain away from the attention of others, if he can help it he'd also remain uninvolved in other's personal matters, though he doesn't shy away if the matter is important or he feels that it is otherwise necessary that he step in.

The Bōkunō clan are very naturally aggressive, something that Hachū rails against in attempting to live out his life as a pacifist. He realizes the futility in attempting to practice such a philosophy while a part of a military organization where combat is an almost guaranteed role that he would take part in. Thus he attempts to avoid battle where he can and for the situations where it becomes unavoidable he makes use of less directly lethal forms of combat such as Hakuda or the Bakudō line of Kidō spells. Attempting to restrain opponents rather than outright kill them. In this way he is more of a pacificist. The natural aggression that the rest of his people are known to exhibit still lingers within him, taking conscious effort on his behalf to keep contained. On the occassions that he loses his self control he becomes increasingly beastial, foregoing all caution and restraint to act on instinct. He is incensed by violence, particularly harm against himself, in this state which only eggs him on further to continue rampaging.

He has a love of science and originally left the safety of his clan's territory in order to seek out and learn more about it. His field of study is that of Pharmacy, a field of science mixing both Chemistry and Health science together. His role in such a field is not only the proper use of medication and other drugs, but also the development of effective drugs for use by the Gotei 13.

Powers & Abilities[]

Natural Abilities

Enhanced Durability: All those with a high level of spiritual energy exhibit endurance that would appear unnatural to humans, capable of shrugging off all but the most devastating of attacks. Shinigami in particular are known to be able to withstand insane amounts of punishment without their bodies giving out, and in most cases their only weakness would appear to be decapitation. Hachū is no exception to this, though in addition to the strength granted to him through a spiritual body he also has the natural benefit of armoured plate-like scales covering his entire body. With his particular brand of endurance he can easily shrug off the attacks of swords and other weapons without so much as a scratch.

Expert Chemist: Hachū is an able chemist, devising numerous drugs and concoctions for use by members of the Gotei 13, he has a direct hand in a lot of the drugs used by the 4th Division.

Animal Communication: He is known to be able to talk to animals, often claiming that horses are a "pain in the arse to deal with".

Shinigami Powers & Abilities

Kidō Expert: One of the four arts of Zankensoki, the primary combat fields of the Shinigami, Kidō is a combat form based on the incanting of spells by utilizing ones own Reiryoku. Primarily Kidō spells fall into either of two categories, Hadō (破道, Way of Destruction) which are spells geared towards causing damage to enemies, or Bakudō (縛道, Way of Binding) which is a more broad field focusing on defense, immobilization or other effects with seals and barriers making up a particular subset of these spells. There are spells that fall outside of the typical classifications such as Kaidō (回道, Turn Way) which covers Kidō that are used to heal the wounds of others. Hachū is particularly skilled in the art of Kidō, with knowledge in all three of the noted fields. He can wield spells as high as Hadō #63. without incantation to great effect and just as easily wield Bakudō of the same tier. Though yet to rank alongside other masters of the craft, Hachū has actually contributed greatly to the further advancement of Kidō by inventing his own spells for use.

  • Senkoe: One of the first spells devised by Hachū, it is a Hadō spell with a large level of power behind it but at the cost of a very slim chance of hitting the opponent. Reciting the incantation the user then lets out a powerful roar that can temporarily stun anyone capable of hearing it. Focusing a large amount of spiritual energy in the throat, the user fires it out as a small but fast moving bolt that delivers a high impact explosion on contact. The incapacitation caused is extremely short and the miniscule size of the projectile, althought difficult to keep track of, is easy to avoid.
  • Tora Toge: Recognized officially as Hadō #21, Tora Toge is another of Hachū's personally devised Kidō spells. The user recites the incantation before stomping the earth with their foot, creating a small fracture in the ground beneath them. Then they place their palms on the ground and flood the cracked earth with spiritual energy. A trail of stone spikes burst from the earth ahead of them culminating in a large pool of spikes a short distance away. The spears have enough strength to pierce through bones, flesh, and even armour. With a rising motion, the user can launch the accumulated spikes into the air at a target.
  • Butakawa Kōyaku: Reciting the incantation, the user generates an oval shaped orb of spiritual energy in their palm before launching it at a target. When it reaches the target, the orb expands rapidly to cover the target within a similiarly oval shaped prison of purple energy. The barrier is very powerful and reacts as if almost elastic, bouncing most attacks straight back at the attackers.
  • Donryoku: The user focuses a larger amount of spiritual energy through their Zanpakutō, utilizing any possible reflections on the blade to generate beams of light that are fired with each swing of the weapon. Each individual beam packs the same punch as a Shakkahō spell and can be fired indefinitely as long as a certain amount of light continues to reflect from the Zanpakutō in use. In addition to being deadly, they can also hone in on targets at the user's discretion. Though Hachū created the spell he has yet to actually use it himself, instead having developed it for use by Jojishi Kyōjin.

Swordsman: Another of the arts of Zankensoki, Zanjutsu is the field pertaining to swordfighting, in most cases with a Zanpakutō, and the form that most Shinigami show expertise in. Whilst a member of an active military force, learning the art of Zanjutsu is a requirement and though Hachū attempts a pacifist ideal, he is capable of fighting with the sword if necessary. He is no master of the art but is able to deal with opponents considered experts by human standards.

Hakuda Practitioner: One of the arts of Zankensoki, Hakuda is the field of unarmed combat, with abilities that favour use of the hands but make use of the legs and other limbs to a degree as well. Hachū uses the fighting style as a way of giving himself a form of combat that can be used whilst in close range where his Kidō would be unviable, so that he doesn't have to kill an opponent as using his sword would most often lead to. His animalistic side prefers unarmed combat as well, making ferocious use of his claws and teeth as a way of ripping enemies to shreds

Shunpo Practitioner: The Shinigami combat form that covers movement techniques, Hohō is the ability that allows Shinigami to move through the air as if they were still walking on the ground, and gives them access to Shunpo, the ability to move at speeds that almost reach the level of true teleportation. Having only recently taken to studying the art indepth, Hachū is still very much an amateur though he has enough skill to keep up with users of Bringer Light.

High Spiritual Power: Though Sixth Seat in rank, Hachū boasts spiritual power comparable to Shinigami of Lieutenant quality, allowing him to fight on even terms with the likes of Satoru Kyōfu with little to no disadvantages. When exerted his spiritual energy takes on an alloy orange shade.
