Grigori (保護者 (グリゴリ), Gurigori; Japanese for "Guardian") are Quincy with Shinigami powers. Within Quincy lore, they were obscurely known as the "Fallen Quincy" (落伍滅却師, Rakugo Kuinshī); heritics who turned their backs on the pride of the Quincy and sided with the treacherous Shinigami in exchange for power.

Zanpakutō: Like all souls that possess Shinigami powers, Grigori are capable of materializing their inner self into Zanpakutō. However, there are three significant factors which make their Zanpakutō unique when compared to Shinigami. The first is that they do not require an Asauchi with which to channel their Zanpakutō spirit. In place of that, they utilize their Quincy powers to create a physical form where the Zanpakutō can be imprinted upon. As a result, the Zanpakutō created by a Grigori are incapable of being detected by Ōetsu Nimaiya, for they did not originally use one of his forged Asauchi. The second is that, whereas Shinigami often wield their Zanpakutō in the form of a sword, the Grigori are far more broad and diverse in the shape they choose for their Zanpakutō; some opting for obscure forms, such as a necklace or a set of rings, while others may even decide to mold their Zanpakutō into armor. The third factor is that, whereas Shinigami must always carry their Zanpakutō with them, Grigori can wield their Zanpakutō no different than a conventional Quincy wields their Spirit Weapon. In other words, they are able to materialize their Zanpakutō at any time. Similar to Shinigami, Grigori can also learn how to harness their Zanpakutō's powers through Shikai and Bankai.
- Konsō: Despite wielding Quincy powers, a Grigori does not destroy the souls that are slain by their weapons. Rather, like the Shinigami, they are able to purify souls that are cut down by their Zanpakutō. This is due to the fact that their weapons, despite being forged by Quincy powers, are imbued with Shinigami powers as well, permitting them the unconscious use of Konsō. Similarly, this allows them to slay Hollows without fear of disrupting the balance.

Behind the Scenes[]
The name, Grigori, originates from the Books of Enoch which describe the fall of the angels known as Watchers. It is said that they fell from heaven after succumbing to their lust for humans. This is intended to tie directly into the origin of how the Grigori first came about in this rendition within the Bleach universe. According to the author, the Grigori can materialize their Zanpakutō similar in principle to how a Blazer can materialize their Device in the light novel series, Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry.
