The Gotei 13 (護廷十三隊, Goteijūsantai; 13 Division Imperial Guards, 13 Court Guard Squads in the English dub, 13 Court Guard Companies in the English manga) is the primary Military Force in the Seireitei and Rukonagi Soul Society. It is the primary force which Soul Reapers join upon graduating the Shinō Academy.

Upon ten years following the events what is known as the White War, the Ultharon War begins. The resulting battles caused the deaths and near-mortal injuries of countless Soul Reapers, including the Head Captain Genryūsai Yamamoto. In the aftermath of this war, many of the Noble Heads switched duties to take on the void positions left behind those who were KIA and currently absent due to promotion. The new Head Captain that came to pass, is named Furuidenshō Kakkotaru Shin'nen.
