The Gotei 13 (護廷十三隊, Goteijūsantai) is the primary military branch of Soul Society, founded by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto after the extinction of the former Balancers of Souls, the Sōzōshin.

It is closely associated with the Kidō Corps. The most experienced and powerful of Gotei 13 Captains are promoted to Royal Guard.

• Protection of the Seireitei.
• Combat operations on behalf of the Central 46.
• Defence of the World of the Living.
• Maintenance of the balance of Souls.

History

Long before the Gotei 13 was established, the ancient Sōzōshin maintained the balance of souls among the spiritual realms. However, due to their gradual decline and eventual extinction 2,100 years ago, decisive actions had to be undertaken by the Shinigami, their human-derived successors.

Consequently, the Shin'ō Academy was established in order to train regular Souls to succeed their supernatural predecessors. Over 1,200 years ago Shigekuni Yamamoto founded the Gotei 13 in order to gather its students and accomplish this mission in an organised manner.
