First Spiritual War
Kenji vs. Averian's Premier Battle Doll.
Timeline Bleach: War of the Worlds
Result Averian's Premier Battle Doll is defeated and his army destroyed.
Next Event Bleach: War of the Worlds Part II

The First Spiritual War was fought between the allied Gotei 13, Ryū Order and independent groups against Averian's Army, which was led by a Battle Doll masquerading as an ancient enemy of the Soul Society. Many individuals made their name and power known during this period, specifically Kenji Hiroshi, his friends Van Satonaka and Kei Yume, and also Kusaka Kori, who ended up killing Averian's Battle Doll at the war's conclusion. The events that comprise this period are depicted near the end of Part I of Bleach (Kenji Hiroshi), and completely comprise the events of Part II, making up one-half of Bleach: War of the Worlds. However, the events which precede the First Spiritual War by roughly a century, lead directly into the main events of that conflict. As such this article comprises the entirety of the Part I storyline covered in Bleach: Sun and Moon Chronicles. Many thought that Averian was the one who instigated the conflict and this is the accepted story throughout the spiritual realms at large. Only those close to Kenji, however, know who truly started it all. Kenji, in reprisal for the murder of Anika Shihōin, promised to crush Averian under his boot and claimed he didn't care who or what got in his way; this declaration spurred Averian to declare war to test Kenji's resolve.

Rivalries arc[]

Part I.

Kenji, whilst dozing in his Kidō theory class, is told by his instructor to wake up and pay attention, or he will be punished again. Kenji yawns and proceeds to nap. As promised he is made stay behind and recite the incantations of Hadō and Bakudō spells #1. through #30. Annoyed by this Kenji, upon reciting the incantation for Hadō #30. Shakkahō, unleashes the spell within the classroom. The resultant explosion and confusion enables Kenji to run. Outside the Academy grounds he is greeted by Sojiro Kori and Kenji asks him where Kusaka is. Sojiro claims that he was punished for refusing to take part in sparring matches because his partner, who was a newbie who barely knew how to hold a sword, would only end up getting hurt. Kenji remarks that that was just like Kusaka. He asks if they should wait for him. Before Sojiro can answer however the duo are interrupted by Kusaka himself, who states something has come up. Kenji begins to ask what he means but the one who answers isn't Kusaka, but Shigeru Yūdai. The black-haired Shinigami notes that the Gotei 13 have a mission for them.

Part II.

Tadashi Kori welcomes Kenji and Kusaka, and thanks Shigeru for bringing them to him, with Shin Nagakura remarking that things are too tense. Kusaka asks what the Gotei 13 want this time, leading Kenji to recall their last mission together. It amounted to glorified patrol throughout various districts of the outlying Rukongai dispatching teams of Hollow as they encountered them. Kenji states this which causes Tadashi to chuckle. He says neither have seen the implications this causes and further asks if the two have ever heard of Hollow operating in teams before. Kusaka, intrigued, says he hasn't. Kenji asks if Tadashi or Shin have. The Captains do not respond immediately and when they do the news they reveal does not bode well: the only times in history when Hollow have worked in groups is when a sufficiently powerful force has rose in Hueco Mundo that could direct their base instinct towards a goal. Shaken, the duo ask what the mission is, causing Tadashi to grin. Shin tells them they need someone they can trust implacably, outside the Gotei 13, with the necessary skills to infiltrate Hueco Mundo and confirm their suspicions. With this in-mind Tadashi orders the duo to locate Maki Zhijun.

Part III.

Kenji and Kusaka travel to Nishiendo which is the tenth district of Western Rukongai, which is where Tadashi and Shin claim Maki to be living. After questioning the residents the two travel into the wooded area near the town by following the river, and eventually come upon a small shack at the base of a large waterfall. An older man with a scar through his eye notes the pair aren't Shinigami yet and ponders aloud why they are here. Kusaka asks his name and once his identity has been established as Maki the pair bring him up to speed regarding Tadashi and Shin's observations. Maki ponders this, muttering something about ancient foes neither Kenji or Kusaka understand, and notes things could become dangerous. He asks if a time-limit has been imposed on this mission. Kenji says that there isn't which causes Maki to smile. He informs the duo that their studies at the Shinō Academy are on-hold because, for the next week, he is going to ensure the pair have the skills necessary to travel to Hueco Mundo and survive. Kusaka claims that such advancement is impossible in only one week but Maki only laughs. Maki tells the pair to prepare themselves as he retrieves an assortment of knives from his shack bound together by ropes. When Kenji asks what this training will entail Maki reveals his plan to them: he's going to take them into the Dangai, but notes that he needs to visit someone first.

Part IV.

Within the Dangai Maki stabilizes the current with the knives he took with him, and orders Kenji and Kusaka to initiate Jinzen. He further states that forging a bond with one's Zanpakutō is the swiftest means of gaining strength, and reminds them to be quick because stabilizing the current will quickly exhaust even him. Elsewhere, in the barracks of the 11th Division, Tadashi converses with Shigeru. The latter reveals that the two outermost districts of Eastern Rukongai have been completely razed. Tadashi asks if he knows who or what is responsible. Shigeru responds in the positive: according to the S.R.D.I it was a Shinigami who was responsible. This news surprises Tadashi who asks Shigeru to investigate further. This prompts the latter to remind Tadashi that he is a member of the Onmitsukidō and thus does not take orders from him. He further states however that that was his mission anyhow and Tadashi should count himself lucky he has decided to make his reports to him as well.

Part V.

Kenji and Kusaka emerge from the Dangai with far more confidence than they had going in, with Maki remarking that the pair seemed to have advanced considerably. He ponders if their rivalry has something to do with this. Kusaka, however, asks why they weren't chased by the Kōtotsu. Maki reveals that the person he visited beforehand was a friend in the S.R.D.I who owed him a favour and that this individual ensured the defences in the Dangai where turned off for the duration of their visit. Maki then claims he is done explaining things and proceeds to open a shimmering black portal, leading Kenji to ask what it is. Maki does not answer and instead tells them to hurry up and step inside. Shigeru, meanwhile, arrives in the outermost district of Eastern Rukongai, and speaks aloud to a colleague. This man notes that the chaotic reiatsu he felt before still permeates the area, further claiming he feels like he's being watched. Shigeru, calling the man Ryan, says he worries too much. He then reminds him that they have a job to do and should get back to it. Elsewhere, Maki, Kenji and Kusaka step out onto the sandy plains of Hueco Mundo.

Part VI.

Maki leads Kenji and Kusaka on a covert sweep of Hueco Mundo, remarking to them that he has never seen the realm so quiet. Kenji asks if this is proof of what Tadashi and Shin feared with Maki claiming they need to investigate some more. Meanwhile, in Eastern Rukongai, Shigeru and Ryan dispatch a group of Hollow. The duo come to the conclusion that the chaotic reiatsu that still permeates the area is what is attracting the Hollow. Another group of Hollow emerge and Ryan swiftly defeats them, with Shigeru noting they need to intensify patrols. Back in Hueco Mundo Maki leaves Kenji and Kusaka behind as he scouts ahead. The duo discuss the possibility of something arising in Hueco Mundo capable of commanding the lesser Hollow and shudder at the thought. When several hours pass and Maki still does not return the pair decide it best to go after him.

Part VII.

Before Kenji and Kusaka can take more than a few steps Maki appears before the pair with blood-spattered clothing. He re-opens the portal and tells both to move and the three disappear as multiple powerful spiritual pressures sweep through the area. Once back in Soul Society Kenji asks what the hell just happened, leading Maki to bring the pair up-to-speed. He acknowledges that a power has indeed risen in Hueco Mundo and that this group of individuals are calling themselves the Espada. Kusaka notes that the power he felt was far stronger than anything he had felt from Hollow up until now, and asks if they are even the same species. Maki reveals that what Kusaka felt was the spiritual power of an Arrancar: Hollow who have evolved by achieving Shinigami-like power by removing their mask. Maki tells both to return to their studies because he has matters to discuss with Tadashi and Shin. As Maki leaves Kenji asks Kusaka how they can be expected to go back to normality now, knowing what they know. Kusaka says they don't have to and resolves to grow stronger in order to aid his father. Kenji agrees.

Days of Carnage arc[]

Main article -- Days Of Carnage Arc.

An unspecified time following the Hollowfication of a number of high-level Shinigami, Shiro Kujo becomes the new Captain of the 9th Division in the Gotei 13, with Kaname Tōsen as his Lieutenant. Shiro took it upon himself and decided to "recruit" his younger brother, Van Satonaka, into the ranks of the Shinigami, by enrolling the latter in the Shinō Academy; whether he liked it or not. Van confronted his brother regarding this decision and even though he pleaded otherwise, Van is not given much choice by Shiro and eventually gives in, thus beginning his academy career. Shortly after passing the entrance exam Kagura selects Van to be one of a number of experiments for his new racial project. Van was abducted by Jimi in the dead of night and had a parasitic creature placed within his body by Kagura. Van was then returned to his home and his memories of the event erased. Over the years Van applied himself diligently to his studies and began to flourish; he became famous for his unorthodox tactics in combat scenarios, and did particularly well in Zanjutsu, Hakuda and Kidō, whilst performing poorly in Hohō. Van continued to struggle in his Hohō classes until he befriended Atsuya Tatsumi, whose assistance enabled Van to advance.

Van would eventually form a rivalry with fellow-students Akira Cagali, Luka Kagamine and Atarashi Kaishi. The four disliked one another immediately and their shared animosity turned what was supposed to be a standard Zanjutsu class into a mass brawl on the academy grounds. All those responsible where punished by the draconian Head-Instructor of the academy, who had both groups lashed. Afterwards, impressed by the strength Van displayed in the fight, Kanata Yamato befriends Van and Atsuya. The two groups would continue to clash throughout their respective tenures, even on training missions, and where hated by their classmates as a result who often had to share in their punishments.

One particular training session coincided with an experiment carried out by Kagura and Jimi, which caused a number of Menos Grande to appear close to the class's field exercise in the Rukongai. Van's group once again clashed with Akira's and the resultant fight grew so out-of-hand that the Menos where attracted by the fighters spiritual pressure. Kagura and Jimi retreated to remove any evidence of their presence whilst Shiro, who was watching the situation with the students unfold from afar, decided not to intervene; he wished to see the skill-level of Van and his class and thus decided to leave them to their own devices. This decision had massive repercussions. A great many of the students where killed by the Menos and both Van and Akira realized what Shro had done, and grew disillusioned with the Soul Society as a direct result. The Menos where subdued by Ryōta Hachirō and Koichi Hiroshi, with the latter expressing his disgust at Shiro's actions.

A month later Van approaches Medaka Rosenkrantz with an idea to help the surviving students blow off some steam, proposing a "war game" between his own faction and that led by Akira. Shiro, knowing that the fights between the students had been escalating since the Menos attack, gave his okay for the plan. Little did he know however was the fact Van and Akira where acting in concert: the two rivals had come together to form a plan to break away from Soul Society and escape into the World of the Living, and even had a Senkaimon and Jigokuchō awaiting them -- courtesy of Ryōta and Koichi. Shiro's complete disregard for the safety of the students a month prior had galvanized the survivors resolve; they threw their lot in with Van and Akira, and agreed to help them. Shiro watched over the "war" personally and eventually noted that some students weren't fighting at all; he brushed them off as cowards to scared to fight, and eventually ordered a number of Shinigami from the 9th Division to enter as a third faction. As he returned his attention to the battles taking place below two bright flashes of light streaked into the heavens: the signal had been given, and both factions led by Van and Akira stopped battling each other and threw themselves at the 9th Division. Sheer numbers and surprise worked in the students favour and they cut down Shiro's faction as they bolted towards the Senkaimon.

They where intercepted by Medaka who had slain a number of students who arrived ahead of Van and Akira's group. Akira volunteers to remain behind and buy the others the time they need to escape, leading Van to acknowledge the latter's strength. Akira tackles Medake and the others proceed through the Senkaimon, though Van stops short. He turns in-time to see Medaka prepare the killing blow only for Luka and Atarashi to intercept the strike. Luka assures Van that they'll see each other on the other side, leading Van to leap through. In the wake of this incident Kenji and Kusaka, who have returned from their mission with Maki, ask Ryōta what happened. Ryōta explains the events as he knows them but admits that the whole story is not currently known; he further claims that the Onmitsukidō have been deployed to search for the missing students, but haven't had any luck as of yet. Kusaka wishes the students good luck with Kenji hoping to meet them one day.

Birth of the Bakkōtō: The Kasumiōji Conspiracy[]

Birth of the Bakkōtō Part I.

With Kenji and Kusaka both off in Hueco Mundo with Maki, Anika returns to her own mission, and manages to spy on a shady meeting between two groups in the outlying districts of Northern Rukongai. Her son, Sojiro Kori, asks her who the two groups are, though Anika motions for him to be silent, whilst disguising her shock and surprise that he managed to sneak up on her. The pair observe the group for a time, noticing an exchange taking place, before deciding to put some distance between themselves so they can speak. Anika asks Sojiro why he is here, noting that things where much too dangerous, and that this mission is not a game. She further asks why he is not with training with Yoichi. Sojiro counters by claiming that she did not see or sense his approach, meaning he was just as qualified as she was, before starting that Yoichi was "running around again". Suppressing a laugh Anika tells her youngest son to accompany her back to the Seireitei's north gate, noting that she has another lead to follow up. Overjoyed Sojiro flash-steps after his mother who playfully tells him not to lag behind. Sojiro flippantly remarks that she is the Flash Goddess and that he can hardly be expected to match her speed, but does so anyway. Anika shakes her head and claims that he is just like his father.

Birth of the Bakkōtō Part II.

Anika and her son bunker down in a run-down safe-house near the northern gate leading into the Seireitei. Sojiro asks her who their contact is before noting that roughly three hours have passed since they arrived, and that he is getting a little concerned. Anika reassures him that there is no need to be because their contact will not fail. Shortly after Anika pulls her son to the floor near the window, whilst she peers out. She points to three figures approaching the gate and whispers to Sojiro that they are the same people they observed before. Sojiro, looking through a small gap, states that they are nobles. He then asks which family they belong to. Anika motions for her son to leave by way of the back entrance. Once outside she swiftly relocates him and herself to another safe-house several streets over, which Sojiro does not recognize. He then asks what they are doing here. Stepping out from the shadows Ryan Kuchiki answers that they are here to see him. He then asks why Anika has brought a mere child along on such a dangerous mission. She replies that Sojiro is no mere child, but her child, and asks him what he has learned. Ryan, letting the matter of Sojiro slide with a nonchalant shrug, claims that the old man's hunch was right on the money, eliciting a groan from Anika. Sojiro asks what is wrong. Ryan explains that the nobles they saw belong to the Kasumiōji Clan and that they have been involved in something suspect for quite some time. When Ryan turns to speak to Anika both he and Sojiro find her gone. Ryan swears and takes this as his queue to leave and suggests that Sojiro come with him.

Birth of the Bakkōtō Part III.
Ryanandsojiro

Ryan decides to pass the time by sparring with Sojiro as Anika makes her report to Yamamoto and Shin'etsu.

Sojiro follows Ryan with the latter taking him to the Kuchiki manor. Once inside he tells Sojiro that his mother likely went ahead to report to the Captain-Commander, and states that it would be best that the old man not know that Sojiro was personally involved in this hunt. Sojiro agrees. He then wonders aloud how dangerous the Kasumiōji are. Ryan answers, revealing that the Clan are suspected of dealing in the creation of illegal weaponry, and that is the reason for their investigation. Sojiro remarks that the Kasumiōji Clan must have immunity or they wouldn't be watching them from the shadows. Ryan grins, remarking that Sojiro catches on quick, before motioning him into an adjoining room. As they enter what is obviously a room Ryan uses for sparring he throws Sojiro a wooden weapon and tells him that they may as well pass the time until Anika returns. Elsewhere, in Yamamoto's office, Anika relays what she and Ryan discovered to Yamamoto and Shin'etsu Kisaragi, remarking that it warrants a closer inspection. Yamamoto tells her to leave it to him.

Birth of the Bakkōtō Part IV.

When Anika arrives at the Kuchiki manor she finds Ryan drilling her son in advanced techniques usually restricted to the Onmitsukidō, and opts to watch the proceedings. Her vigil is interrupted by Sōritsu Kuchiki who informs her that Sojiro has remarkable potential in matters of espionage, stating that Anika has taught him well. Anika thanks her old friend for his kind words and asks Sōritsu how he has been faring, noting that she heard he had become something of a recluse in recent years. Sōritsu states that he was old when they once travelled with Garian Shinjo and that the years have not been kind to him. He tells Anika to visit more often before politely excusing himself. When Anika approaches Ryan and her son the former asks how the meeting with Yamamoto went, though Sojiro deduces from his mother's demeanour that it could have gone better and states as much. She agrees and explains that Yamamoto wishes to handle things by himself from here. Ryan chuckles at this, claiming the old man only needed them for the sensitive work, and places a wager with Anika that he'll end up botching it somehow. Meanwhile, in the barracks of the 1st Division, Shin'etsu informs his son, Shūsuke Kisaragi, that he will be away on assignment for a time, and that he is to be good in his absence. Shūsuke wishes his father good luck. Elsewhere, within the Shihōin family manor, Ryan speaks to Sojiro's father, Tadashi Kori, and asks for his permission to take Sojiro under his wing. Tadashi agrees.

Birth of the Bakkōtō Part V.

Shortly after Shin'etsu leaves on his mission, Shūsuke discovers his father grievously injured, and runs to his side. As he holds his father in his arms Shin'etsu tells him to "Beware the Bakkōtō", before passing away. It is then that Yamamoto appears and reveals to the grieving Shūsuke that he was the one responsible for Shin'etsu's death, and proceeds to explain the reasons for his death and the existence of the Bakkōtō and what they have learned regarding them. Realizing that his father's last words mesh with Yamamoto's story, Shūsuke declares his intention to become a Shinigami and bring those responsible for his father's death to justice. He requests that Yamamoto train him for this eventuality, which the Captain-Commander agrees to do, as both disappear into the night. From the shadows Anika and Ryan, who seen the entire scene, shake their heads. Anika sadly comments that Ryan won their wager, though Ryan claims he takes no joy in that news. He asks her what their plan is now. She tells him to back away from the Kasumiōji for now and leave things up to Yamamoto as he wished. The two then leave the scene via Shunpo.

Birth of the Bakkōtō Part VI.

In the immediate aftermath Shūsuke changes his name to Shūsuke Amagai and asks Yamamoto to destroy anything linking him to the Kisaragi name as a safeguard until he is ready. Yamamoto then introduces Shūsuke to a woman around his own age called Madoka Mizuki, whom Yamamoto states to be another student of his. Shūsuke remarks that this makes them "sibling students", leading Madoka to immediately claim that this would make her the "eldest sibling", and further notes that this means that Amagai should defer to her. Amagai is surprised by Madoka's childish attitude, which appears to vex her teacher, and claims he did not expect a student of Yamamoto's to be that way. Yamamoto looks on as his new students begin to bicker. Elsewhere, Ryan leads Sojiro through the halls of the Kuchiki family manor. Sojiro follows in silence until they enter an underground room with scorched walls and a blackened ceiling. Ryan reveals that he spent many long hours sequestered away inside this room with Blake Shihōin and Miria Fujibayashi learning how to fight. As he steps to the side three silhouetted figures step forward with masked faces, seemingly out of thin air. Sojiro worriedly asks what this means. Ryan, smiling, suggests that Sojiro prepare himself. As Ryan turns his back to leave he tells Sojiro that he will return in thirty minutes.

Birth of the Bakkōtō Part VII.

Amagai is gifted an Asauchi by Yamamoto and spends the following week training with Madoka. As they spar she asks him how he came to be one of Yamamoto's students, noting that he does not accept just anyone. He decides to tell her a version of the truth, explaining that he seeks justice for the death of his father whilst omitting mention of the Kasumiōji and Bakkōtō. He then asks her the same thing, prompting Madoka to explain the unique quality of her reiatsu, which is seemingly linked to the forces of nature. Meanwhile Sojiro, having survived his initial training session with Ryan, is inducted into the Onmitsukidō. He is told by Ryan that his real training begins now and implores him to take the tenants of the Onmitsukidō to heart. Yamamoto, meanwhile, sends his students to battle Hollow throughout the Rukongai after briefly instructing them in the art Zanjutsu as an exercise. Madoka correctly deduces that he is likely using this test to determine their strengths and weaknesses. She reveals her thoughts to Amagai who merely claims that this will not get in his way.

Trickster arc[]

The Trickster Strikes Part I.

Three months after the incident with Van's class Kenji, walking through the Rukongai, complains bitterly about being assigned an understudy when he himself hasn't even graduated the academy yet, leading the young man at his side to apologize. Kenji, calling the young man Kazuma, reminds him that it isn't his fault. He then claims they may as well make the best of the situation and inquires after Kazuma's studies. Kazuma claims he isn't good or bad at anything, which leads Kenji to ask him what the problem is then. He answers, noting he does better with a demonstration of things, rather than a lengthy description, and notes that his teachers don't always have the time to do this. Kenji proceeds to draw his Zanpakutō and advises Kazuma to do the same before swiftly attacking the young man, stating that he will learn through observation. Kenji, however, senses something amiss and twists in-place. Kazuma gasps in surprise as his new teacher intercepts the blade of a white-robed man. Kenji shunts the blade to the side and attempts to strike his would-be-killer only for the latter to move to Kenji's back via Shunpo and attack, which Kenji blocks by drawing his wakizashi. Kenji proceeds to release his reiatsu. Elsewhere Kusaka senses Kenji's spiritual energy and decides to see what is wrong.

The Trickster Strikes Part II.

Ryan enters the barracks of the 4th Division and is greeted by Ryōta, who explains what has transpired: Kenji, alongside Kazuma, where attacked by a mysterious man clad in white-coloured robes and left on the verge of death. Ryan asks after Kusaka, claiming Sojiro told him that Kusaka was extensively injured as well, but would recover quickly. Ryōta reveals Kusaka is the only reason Kenji and Kazuma are alive. He further states that Kusaka fought tooth-and-nail to ensure the pair's survival. Ryan remarks that the man responsible must have been incredibly skilled to have done so much damage to Kenji and Kusaka, noting that not even he (Ryan) managed to do the same to them when he beat them both in sparring sessions. He asks where their attacker is now. At this Shigeru interjects himself into the conversation and remarks the man has vanished without a trace. Ryan volunteers to remain close-by encase the man returns, with Shigeru opting to remain behind as well as an added precaution.

The Trickster Strikes Part III.
Kyoakufull

Kyoaku appears to Kenji in his Inner World after his crushing defeat at the hands of the white-robed man.

As Kenji lies on a hospital bed his conciousness is drawn into his Inner World, where he meets a being who refers to himself as Kyoaku. Kenji asks where Aoi Inazuma is. Kyoaku responds that she has opted to leave them alone for now. Kyoaku then asks Kenji what he thinks he is doing, leading Kenji to ask what he means. Kyoaku tells Kenji that the white-robed man who defeated him will return sooner or later. He further states that he can help Kenji grow stronger and asks Kenji if he wants to stand on his own two feet, without over-reliance on Kusaka. Kenji asks him what the catch is which causes Kyoaku to laugh. He asks Kenji if he has ever heard of the Yuengiri, pointedly telling him to "wake up". In the waking world Kenji snaps awake to find his wounds completely healed. In his mind he hears the voice of Kyoaku imploring him to stand.

The Trickster Strikes Part IV.

In Western Rukongai Kenji, whose confidence has been bolstered by Kyoaku's words, begins to train in the arts of the Yuengiri. Kyoaku offers to take possession of Kenji's body so he can observe the forms, with Aoi Inazuma assuring Kenji that the possession will only be temporary. He thus agrees and Kyoaku takes control. Elsewhere Ryan and Shigeru agree to investigate the white-robed man on Kenji's behalf, with the former remarking on the oddity of the attack. Shigeru agrees: Kenji was the only target and Kazuma and Kusaka where only injured because they attempted to come to his aid. That evening Kenji is joined by Maki after slumping to the floor in exhaustion, who asks what it is he is doing. Kenji reveals the existence of Kyoaku and his words regarding the Yuengiri and asks Maki what this means. Maki claims that this is the first time he has encountered such a phenomenon, but claims to have heard of the Yuengiri, noting them to have been wiped out long ago. Maki agrees to help Kenji as a sparring partner but notes he will do so only if Kyoaku teaches him the forms as well. Kyoaku agrees and once again possesses Kenji's body.

The Trickster Strikes Part V.

Kusaka awakens to discover a large, wrinkled, white-haired man sitting by his bedside. When Kusaka notes his wounds have been completely healed his visitor notes he can say thanks any time. He then introduces himself as Garian Shinjo and informs Kusaka of his intent to train him. Kusaka, noting Garian to be one of the Seireitei's founders and an original Captain in the Gotei 13, asks what brought this on. Garian maintains Kusaka isn't "mature" enough to know his reasons yet but notes that, in the very near future, a terrible evil will emerge. Garian states that he wants Kusaka to be the ray of light against the coming darkness. Kusaka, however, claims he fights not for personal gain or even justice. He fights only to protect his friends. Meanwhile, in Western Rukongai, Kenji successfully communicates with the spirits in nature, who tell him that Anika Shihōin is approaching. Maki asks him what is wrong. Kenji notes they have company and greets Anika who is surprised he sensed her approach. Kenji claims he wasn't the one who sensed her leading Anika to remark on Kenji's growing familiarity with the Wan'nesu.

The Trickster Strikes Part VI.

Kenji asks Anika what has brought her out here, hastily adding that Maki is his sparring partner, noting with fear she doesn't need to offer her help. Maki warns the boy not to drag him into this. Anika waves his concern aside and claims that she heard about Kenji's run-in with the white-robed man and is here only to talk. She tells Kenji to sit down. She proceeds to reveal Kenji's true parentage and status as a member of the noble Shiba clan, referring to him by his birth name Rōnin. Anika claims she was good friends with Kenji's mother, Aiko Shiba, and that the latter made her (Anika) his godmother. Kenji, after being silent for a time, asks after his father. Anika, sighing, says they have already met: the white-robed man. Shocked and enraged Kenji demands to know why his father wants him dead. Anika admits she does not know the reasons as-of-yet but implores Kenji to train harder: his father, Dastan, was once a Captain in the Gotei 13, and was one of the few who came close to the strength of the original Captains. Kenji notes he will get answers from Dastan himself. Before departing Anika also tells Kenji he has three siblings: two brothers, Meian and Rosuto, and a sister, Kireina. After being left alone Maki notes Kenji's high spiritual power suddenly makes sense, further stating if he wants to best Dastan Shiba, who was formerly feared as The Trickster in battle, then he needs to do what Anika says and train like there's no tomorrow. Kenji asks Maki if he will help him, with Maki agreeing. Meanwhile, in the World of the Living, Kusaka begins his own training under Garian, who tells him there will be no slacking.

The Trickster Strikes Part VII.

Shigeru and Ryan eschew traditional avenues and report directly to Tadashi and Anika, who ask them what they had discovered. Ryan claims that Dastan left little in the way of a path to follow, and further states that they currently have very little information regarding his connections or his goals; Kenji's death aside, of course. Shigeru notes that Maki, who was the first to arrive on-the-scene following Kusaka's intervention and eventual defeat, could not sense Dastan's spiritual energy and that he only knew who he was based on his appearance. Anika, in agreement, claims this information was in-line with what her sources had also reported. Tadashi then interjects himself and states that Shin managed to track Dastan's movements. He concedes however that the best way to lure him out is to use Kenji as bait. Ryan, against this, claims that Kenji has faced enough danger. Elsewhere, in the World of the Living, Kusaka shocks Garian by how quickly he grasps advanced applications of Shinigami combat. He tells Garian to give him the toughest task he has because time is short. Garian, in amazement, notes internally that Kusaka may just be the one with the required ability to best Averian.

The Trickster Strikes Part VIII.

Kenji, in a meditative pose, visits his Inner World at the direction of Aoi Inazuma. There he is greeted by Kyoaku who notes that it is now time to teach Kenji an advanced technique of the Yuengiri: the Battle Aura. Kenji asks what this technique involves which elicits a smile from his teacher. Elsewhere, in the World of the Living, Kusaka reads some of Garian's old papers. He confronts the old Shinigami regarding two figures that feature prominently in his writings: Shinzō and Averian. Garian claims that Kusaka should have left his papers alone but ultimately explains their origins: Shinzō was an old friend who ended up turning against The Philosophers, whilst Averian was the original Arrancar and a long-time enemy of the Gotei 13. When Kusaka asks if they are still alive Garian responds by saying that it is time for Kusaka to stop asking questions and get back to his training. Kusaka then realizes that Garian isn't training him to help Kenji stop the white-robed man but for something else altogether. In the Seireitei Anika asks Maki if Kenji is truly capable of defeating Dastan and, more importantly, facing Averian. Maki claims that, with time and guidance, he will be. He states that the revelation of his lineage lit an even bigger fire under Kenji's ass and that he is now committed beyond his initial desire for answers, but doubts his commitment against Averian. Anika wonders what kind of push he will need.

The Trickster Strikes Part IX.

Near the northernmost edge of the Rukongai Shin and Tadashi manage to not only sneak up on Dastan's location, but eavesdrop on a conversation The Trickster is having with a hooded figure. The hooded man asks Dastan how he could allow his target to escape given the differences in their skills. Dastan notes it wasn't Kenji who stopped him but his friend Kusaka. Shin, meanwhile, takes note of the surroundings, telling Tadashi that something is not right. Tadashi claims to have sensed it as well and further states that they are likely surrounded and should beat a hasty retreat. Shin suggests "Formation Four", which Tadashi agrees with. Shin releases his Zanpakutō. Dastan and his contact witness a flash of white light before Shin leaps at them from concealment, only to be deftly subdued by the hooded figure, who looses his hood in the process. Shin is subsequently stabbed through the chest by Dastan but his body disappears in a puff of smoke, leaving the two alone. Dastan is left fuming whilst the hooded man demands that this loose end be tied up immediately. Elsewhere, Shin and Tadashi emerge in Anika's safe-house, who greets them with a playful punch to Tadashi's arm. She then asks what Shin has learned. The latter concentrates for a time before declaring that Dastan's benefactor is none other than Shinzō. The name causes Anika noticeable concern who admits that he had completely slipped her information net. She further wonders why Shinzō would want Kenji dead. Tadashi claims that this isn't their only problem and says that Dastan is likely on his way even as they speak, and suggests that they warn Kenji and Maki.

The Trickster Strikes Part X.

Shin and Tadashi mobilize to forewarn Kenji and Maki but the pair already know what has transpired, having learned of it by communing with the spirits in nature. Kenji then states that Dastan is close. Shin and Tadashi prepare to do battle but Kenji tells them to put away their swords because this is his fight, with Maki assuring them that all will be well. Kenji leaves the scene via Shunpo and appears before his father, who is surprised that Kenji has come alone to face him. He notes however that he is not here for him this time: it is Shin and Tadashi that he is after. Kenji, however, reveals that he too knows about Shinzō's involvement, and demands that Dastan try to fulfil his original contract. Dastan remarks that Kenji has learned much and draws his Zanpakutō. Kenji counters by declaring that he has learned far more than that and addresses Dastan as "Father", shocking him. Dastan asks what Kenji means. Kusaka, meanwhile, is presented with a violet-coloured haori by Garian, who tells him to wear it with pride. Kusaka asks him what it is. Garian reveals it is the haori that he wore prior to the formation of the Gotei 13. He then says that the battle between Dastan and Kenji has begun. Kusaka prepares to leave immediately but before he can do so Garian teleports him to the Seireitei using forbidden Kidō. On the battlefield Kenji and Dastan finally clash, with Kenji remarking that he hopes his father can do better. Dastan, however, appears noticeably shaken by this news, and appears distracted and confused. Seizing the initiative Kenji slashes him across the back.

The Trickster Strikes Part XI.

Kenji and Dastan engage in a blistering display of Zanjutsu-based swordplay, whilst Maki, Tadashi and Shin watch from below. As Dastan cuts Kenji's left shoulder lightly Tadashi notes that Kenji has incorporated much of Maki's own rough style into his own, but states that Dastan is still the superior swordsman. Shin replies that appearances can be deceptive and reckons that Kenji hasn't shown the full fruits of his training yet, and asks Maki if he is correct. Maki remains silent and only smiles. As the three speak Kenji feints to the right as he draws his wakizashi to strike, but Dastan moves to his back using Shunpo, and pierces his right shoulder with Byakurai. He then notes that Kenji is beaten. Kenji, however, releases his Zanpakutō, which sends Dastan trailing backwards from a surge of lightning, though the burns fade immediately. Maki's grin deepens as he declares the beginning of round two. Kyoaku then speaks to Kenji, advising him to "unleash Suzaku".

In the Seireitei Kusaka is approached by his mother, Anika, who says it is good to see him again and that she thought he'd be arriving soon. Kusaka agrees and asks where Kenji is. She reveals that he is in Western Rukongai and that he has begun to fight. Kusaka asks her why the Gotei 13 hasn't mobilized, for they must surely be aware of the situation. Anika admits that they are and have been since the very beginning but where content to leave the matter in her hands, as Yamamoto owed her a favour or two from the old days. When Kusaka points out that Anika more-or-less just admitted to being old she punches her son in the stomach, before snidely remarking that he is nothing at all like his brother Sojiro, who is a polite and respectful boy. Kusaka laughs and requests that she lend him a hand getting to where Kenji is currently fighting. She agrees to do so only if Kusaka apologize to her.

Tadashi notes that the air is becoming hot and wonders aloud as to why. Maki tells him to watch whilst Shin notes that the heat is coming off of Kenji. Kenji successfully parries another strike and launches into a speedy display of his own, which catches Dastan off-guard, and he manages to land three successive strikes to Dastan's torso. These wounds close up however like before, causing Kenji some distress. Kyoaku reveals that Dastan uses a form of time-based restoration and further notes that it is time-sensitive; it can only be used for a limited time period before losing its effectiveness, and states that Kenji needs to hit Dastan with something that will cause severe and sustained injury. Kenji asks how Kyoaku could have learned this from mere observation, leading Kyoaku to admit that he crossed blades with Dastan in the past. Kenji thanks him for the information and prepares himself for Dastan's counterstrike.

The Trickster Strikes Part XII.
Kenjisuzaku

Kenji unveils Suzaku which results in Dastan's defeat.

Dastan admonishes Kenji, claiming that he cannot harm him, though Kenji refutes this. Dastan orders him to prove it then, though both men are surprised when a wave of spiritual power separates the pair. Kusaka steps into the fray and forestalls Kenji's complaint by engaging Dastan, telling Kenji to ready whatever it is he is preparing. Kusaka, however, admits that he isn't fighting to win. He readily acknowledges that this is Kenji's affair and thus does little but parry Dastan's strikes whilst offering basic counters of his own. Tadashi and Anika are left to remark on their son's foolhardiness, though Shin and Maki agree that his heart is in the right place. In the meantime Kenji declares that it is time to fully unveil Suzaku. Kusaka holds Dastan's attention long enough for Suzaku -- a massive phoenix-shaped silhouette of flames -- to strike him head-on, which burns through his body repeatedly as Dastan's Zanpakutō continually voids the damage. Anika states that it is over as Dastan, heavily burned and dazed, staggers forward. Kenji further attacks his father with a new Kidō spell dubbed Jitsugen, invoked with a full incantation.

Tadashi moves to bind Dastan with Kidō, his intention to take him into custody. The following day Anika asks Kenji and Kusaka what they intend to do now. Kenji claims that his time in the Soul Society has come to an end and states his desire to travel the World of the Living to further refine his skills. With Kusaka in agreement the two prepare to set off, though Anika points out that they are forgetting something. Kenji asks her what she means. She informs him that his understudy, Kazuma Nishiki, has fully recovered and is asking where his teacher is. Later that evening the two, joined by young Kazuma, are spirited off to the World of the Living by Anika, with Kazuma thanking the pair for taking him with them. Kenji and Kusaka resolve to teach him everything they known whilst developing their own abilities further. As they look to the horizon Kenji wonders aloud what adventures will await them now and eagerly sets out.

Mastering One's Inner Demons[]

Part I.

Kenji wakes up sore and exhausted despite a full night's sleep and complains about the state of his body to Kazuma Nishiki, who responds by claiming that he isn't the only one in agony. Kenji is suddenly smacked across the face by Hiyori Sarugaki who tells him if he has time to complain then he has time to be training, and proceeds to draw her Zanpakutō. Kenji grabs his own and blocks, with Kazuma noting that Hiyori is more frustrated than usual this morning. Kensei Muguruma remarks that she is simply frustrated by Kenji's progress and intends to knock things up a notch. He then orders Kazuma to get ready too and claims that his training will be in his hands today, which causes Kazuma to run away. Kensei steps after him and casually punches Kazuma in the gut, causing him to buckle. Seeing this distracts Kenji and Hiyori smacks him with her sandal once more, eliciting an angry growl from the latter. Kenji dons his Hollow mask and proceeds to attack Kensei. The latter twists around and grabs Kenji by the face before slamming him into the floor. He then admits that Shinji's plan worked. Kenji asks him what he means by this and Shinji, appearing to Kenji's right, reveals that Hollowfication is tied to one's emotions, with Kenji's reacting specifically to the strong feelings he has towards his friends coupled with the hatred felt towards those who do him -- or his friends -- harm. He suggests that Kenji continue his training with this in-mind.

Part II.

That evening Kazuma, having finished his training with Kensei, remarks that Kenji is still going at it. Lisa Yadōmaru has since taken Hiyori's place as Kenji's sparring partner, though she claims she's doing it only because Shinji and Kei told her to. As the two fight across the wasteland beneath the Visored's warehouse Kazuma asks Shinji about Kusaka Kori, wondering when he will rejoin them. Shinji correctly deduces Kazuma's worry and claims that Love and Rose will look after him, though Kazuma then states that this isn't what he's worried about. He explains to Shinji that before Anika Shihōin directed them to the Visored there had been another in their group called Eri Kurosaki, and that she and Kenji had been in a relationship. Hiyori asked what happened to her. Kazuma reveals that she had been killed by a man known as Kagura and that was who Kusaka was looking for and that if he finds him, Love and Rose may not be able to stop him. Shinji betrays nothing but Hiyori's growl and Kensei's clenched fists speak volumes and Kazuma realizes the Visored know who Kagura is. Shinji explains that Sōsuke Aizen didn't always plot alone and that Kagura was partly responsible for their current state. This topic causes Kensei to rise from his seat in clear anger. He tells Mashiro to come with him and the two leave the scene. Shinji, meanwhile, tells Hachi that training's over for today, with the large Visored exhaling in gratitude. Hiyori subsequently smacks Kenji across the face with her sandal, shattering his mask, and tells him that they've had enough for one night. Shinji then tells an annoyed Kenji that he can take it easy tomorrow to. Kenji, noting if that's the case, then he'll spend the night getting happily drunk, with Lisa saying she'll join him. Shinji claps his hands together and declares they'll make it a party.

Part III.

Kenji wakes up the next morning severely hungover and says aloud that his head feels like someone used it as drum. Lisa stirs beside him, stating that her heads hurts too, which soon catches Kenji's attention. He asks her what she's doing in his bed as flash-backs of the night before come back to him. Elsewhere, Kusaka, alongside Love and Rose, meet with Anika. She claims that Kagura is definitely up to something and warns Kusaka to be wary because he will likely show his hand very soon. Love compares their situation to a manga he read recently, noting things are getting interesting, though Rose admonishes him for spoiling said manga for him. Anika asks the two to be serious for a bit though Kusaka claims that he's serious enough at the moment for all four of them and tells Anika to hurry up and tell him what she knows. Anika states she would have usually struck him for his tone but will let it slide this once because they are pressed for time. She reveals that Kagura has been dedicating much of his time to racial research and that he may be targeting the Visored because of this. Love, seemingly serious, claims that Kagura will have trouble finding them. Rose interjects, saying they should return and tell Shinji, though Kusaka says that he's going to speak with his uncle first and that he'll meet them later. Although she claims that this is not a good idea Anika decides to sneak Kusaka into the Seireitei, but notes that he will owe her.

Kusaka vs. Kagura[]

Part I.

After being successfully smuggled into the Seireitei by way of a reiatsu concealing cloak, Kusaka knocks Anika unconscious and leaves her in the grounds of the 2nd Division barracks. He apologizes to her and disappears into the night. He is soon joined by two cloaked individuals who flank him on either side, bringing forth a smile from Kusaka, who senses a third watching from some distance away. He says he didn't think Kagura would pass up an opportunity like this and proceeds to draw his Zanpakutō. He further states that he suspected Kagura had been watching his earlier meeting with Anika and that was why he needed an excuse to get into the Seireitei. The two cloaked figures are swiftly defeated and Kusaka, pretending not to notice the third in-hiding, turns his back. As the third turns to leave Kusaka trails them at a distance and follows them right back to Kagura's base of operations. The person begins to speak but is soon silenced as Kusaka pierces their back through with his Zanpakutō. He then greets Kagura, who is hidden in the shadows, and Jimi, who is Kagura's right-hand man. He tells both that it is time to die. Kusaka charges into the room and quickly sends Jimi flying through the far wall with a vicious two-handed slash, and then turns his attention towards Kagura. The latter deflects Kusaka's initial attack and lunges at his head, but Kusaka side-steps in-time and brings his considerable Form II skills to bear in a blistering offensive march. He manages to disarm Kagura but before he can cleave him in two Jimi intervenes, blocking his Zanpakutō. Kusaka warns Jimi that he should have stayed down and releases his Zanpakutō into Shikai. As he prepares his Reīssen the roof is destroyed and a woman kicks him in the jaw, distracting him. Jimi pounces and stabs Kusaka through his right side before flash-stepping away. Kagura advances on Kusaka and proceeds to blast him with sustained bouts of electricity though he remains pinned only temporarily. Kusaka releases his Reīssen as an omni-directional wave of silver energy and successfully knocks back all three of his opponents and when the dust clears he has vanished. Kagura orders him to be watched but Jimi notes that his cloak prevents them from sensing his location and since they've lost a visual, they cannot give chase.

Part II.

Jimi's words proved only to be partially true; he may have lost sight of the fleeing Kusaka, but Rosa had not, and Kagura ordered him to be silenced. Meanwhile, in the 2nd Division barracks, Anika finally awakens. Guessing at Kusaka's intentions and claiming that he is a fool, she proceeds to the barracks of the 11th Division and swiftly secures the aid of Tadashi. The latter tells her to inform Shin Nagakura of events, with Anika asking after his intentions. Tadashi claims he's going to save their son and pulls on a rugged pale-blue haori with the kanji for "Kenpachi" emblazoned on the back, and advises Anika to tell Shin to "watch for the light-show". On the battlefield Kusaka is swiftly caught up by his pursuers and Jimi, releasing his Zanpakutō into Shikai, shrouds the area in a purplish mist which Kusaka correctly deduces to be poisonous. He attempts to disperse the mist before inhalation by utilizing brute force; he swings Shagetsu by its chain in wide-looping arcs, but Jimi just reapplies the effect, and Kusaka is soon coughing blood. From a distance Rosa notes that superior prey like Kusaka requires an underhanded approach. She fires blind into the mist with various binding spells and manages to bind Shagetsu to Kusaka's body, which also results in Kusaka being stabbed by the scythe-blade of his own Zanpakutō. Jimi seals his Zanpakutō and flash-steps towards Kusaka, intending to completely bisect him. His blade never hits its mark. Tadashi diverts his blade and paralyses him with a simple glare.

Part III.

Rosa attempts to slash at Kusaka's head whilst Tadashi is seemingly distracted, but Tadashi pulls his son out of the way without taking his eyes off Jimi and blocks Rosa's blade one-handed without even turning to face her, and asks if she truly wants to die here tonight. She cockily notes that it will take more than him to kill her though he repels her with a blinding flash of spiritual power. Blood suddenly bursts from Rosa's back however as a voice notes that, for an assassin, she is incredibly blind to her surroundings. The voice further notes that he normally doesn't get involved in such matters, especially when beautiful woman are involved, but claims Tadashi would be upset with him if he didn't arrive quickly. He then states that the so-called "light-show" was pathetic and that Tadashi wasn't even serious. Tadashi identifies the voice as Shin Nagakura and informs his old friend that his timing was impeccable, but then notes that Shin's blade-work was sloppy. Shin offers to test it out on Tadashi himself and then uses Kidō to transport Kusaka away. As Jimi moves to prevent this Shin casually kicks Jimi hard in the jaw, whilst Tadashi turns swiftly to send the injured Rosa trailing backwards with a casual one-handed blow. The two assassins, noting that the two oldest Captains in the Gotei 13 can't be beaten without an established plan, advices Rosa to retreat. She begrudgingly agrees but claims she'll be back. Tadashi merely laughs in their faces and tells them that they're a thousand years too early to be challenging even one of them alone, let alone both together. Shin suggests they beat a very hasty retreat or he'll demonstrate to them why he's known as the "Demon in the Moonlight". He states the following: "Tadashi's restraining himself tonight and so am I. You see... I'm usually a very lazy fellow. I prefer catching forty winks whenever I can to fighting. But harm my friends family and even this lazy bum will get off his futon and hound your steps till you're dead at my feet." Jimi and Rosa disappear into the night and the two Captains burst into uncontrolled laughter.

Party Crashers[]

Part I.

Shinji yells at Kenji to kick things up a notch or he really will die. This comment is followed by Kenji almost losing his left arm to Lisa's Zanpakutō, though he manages to flash-step away from Hiyori's attempted stomp. He then releases his Zanpakutō into Shikai and attacks again, though Lisa outmanoeuvres him and connects with multiple spinning kicks, which is finished off by Hiyori knocking him into a boulder. Kenji's mask cracks from this but he soon repairs it and claims that the "snaggle-toothed bitch will need to do better". Love remarks to Shinji that, despite them giving him a hard time, Kenji has managed to keep his mask on for almost an hour now. Rose claims that its impressive but Mashiro merely scoffs, reminding everyone she can Hollowfy for fifteen hours, irritating Kensei who tells her to shut up. Mashiro then throws a temper-tantrum with Hacchi commenting in the background that he wished they would take a break. Kazuma, approaching Kensei, asks if he would be willing to train with him again today. The former Captain of the 9th Division claims Kazuma has finally found his backbone and tosses the watch in his hand to Rose. Kenji's training with Hiyori and Lisa is interrupted however by the arrival of Anika who has the wounded Kusaka in-tow, which Kenji notices immediately. Lisa notices too and stops her attack mid-way through but Hiyori attempts to take advantage of Kenji's distraction by slapping him with her sandal but he seizes her hand without even turning to look at her, and advises she not piss him off any more than he already is. Lisa tells Kenji to let Hiyori go. Kenji removes his Hollow mask and proceeds to Kusaka and demands to know what happened. Kusaka, replying in a weak tone, admits that he was an idiot. Kazuma remarks that that's nothing new but a withering glare from Anika makes the young man scurry behind Kensei for protection, who rolls his eyes in irritation. Shinji calms the room and asks for Anika to explain things, which she does. Mention of Kagura again annoys Shinji and he accompanies this with a deadpan expression, with Kensei remarking that they should pay him a visit since he's looking for them anyway. Shinji sighs and claims they have much to discuss before any action is taken.

Part II.

Hacchi begins to heal Kusaka whilst the other Visored discuss matters with Anika, though Lisa remains behind. Before departing Shinji says that they'll likely be a while and suggests that Kenji and friends stay put for now until they're done. He further states to Hacchi and Lisa to make sure they don't leave. Once alone Kenji addresses Kusaka, claiming that he is a fool. Kusaka says all he wanted to do was ensure that they can travel in peace without having to look over their shoulders. Kenji forgives his old friend but says he isn't to run off on his own like that again, noting that was how they lost Eri. Kazuma tells them both to forget it and move on which leads Hacchi to agree with the young man, claiming that everyone is too excited and that this is not a festival.

Lisa then tells Kenji her reason for staying: they're going to continue with their original goal, which was to ensure Kenji can control his Hollow powers. The pair don their respective masks though Hacchi asks them not to go too wild, claiming that Kusaka's injuries have to be his priority. Kenji, meanwhile, asks Lisa if that was all she wanted to do. She asks him what she meant. He admits he doesn't remember much from their night together and asks where they stand now. Lisa, slashing at his face and producing a blade-lock, claims there is no need for anything to change between them. She states they had fun; nothing more, nothing less. Seemingly content Kenji tells her to come at him with everything she has. Lisa complies and releases her Zanpakutō with Kenji doing the same. Hacchi, meanwhile, reminds them not to go wild, and wonders if they even hear him, especially since the two don their Hollow masks.

Kenji's training continues for the next three months.

Part III.

Three months later Kenji is woken up by Kensei kicking him in the ribs and ordering him to hurry up so they can bring him up to speed regarding their decision about Kagura. Kenji reluctantly follows, complaining all the while about Kensei's harsh treatment of him and how the Visored take an age to decide anything, only to then be smacked upside the head by one of Hiyori's slippers. Before the two can enter into their usual antics Anika intervenes and silences both with a glare. At that point Shinji, flanked by the rest of the Visored, tells Kenji that his training is over. He further states that, at least for now, they won't do anything about Kagura, as Kusaka's attempted assassination of him sent him underground and beyond their reach. Surprisingly Kenji agrees and claims he can use the time to further refine his skills. Rose points out once more however that Shinji just told him that Kenji's time with them is over.

Later that afternoon Kenji is approached by Lisa. She asks him where he'll be going now that he'll be leaving the compound. He informs her that he'll likely start making his way to America, claiming he always wanted to visit New York, but that he isn't sure yet either way. He then tells her that Kei had agreed to act as a go-between should he ever need to get in contact with the Visored, and hesitantly asks whether Lisa would like to stay in touch with him. It's at this point that Lisa gingerly touches her stomach and informs Kenji that she has missed her period, revealing their one-night stand left her pregnant. Kenji is left utterly dumbfounded by the news but manages to say that he's never been as happy as he is now.

Machinations arc[]

For months and possibly years Kagura, aided by Onmitsukidō operative Jimi, kidnapped various prospective students from the Shinō Academy and those individuals in the Rukongai with the potential to become Shinigami, in order to experiment upon them as part of his racial research. He was aided in this endeavour by Bansui and Anko Amatsuki and, albeit through a Battle Doll, Averian. The trio, excluding Bansui and Anko, met in an outer district of the Rukongai one night, with Jimi noting he had accomplished his mission. He proceeded to throw a young woman onto the floor in front of Kagura and Averian, with the former remarking that she was a Quincy. Kagura, however, noted that she was far more important than a mere Quincy, further stating that her body was compatible with "the project" and that Bansui would be ecstatic. Eri asked what they intended to do with her. Jimi told her she had not been given leave to speak and struck her in the back of the head, though Kagura waves him aside. He states no harm is to come to their prize and tells Averian that he will be ready soon. As Averian leaves the scene Eri is hoisted to her feet by Jimi and she whispers a single name in response: Kenji.

In the safety of their primary base in Hueco Mundo Kagura asks Jimi if there are any students who could possibly be of use to them. Jimi claims there are currently two. He claims the first student, known as Shiju Shūdō, was a boy who set himself apart from others and rarely interacted with his peers. Kagura claimed this made him their primary target because his disappearance would go mostly unnoticed. Jimi continued and revealed the second potential student, known as Yoshiro Kazuki, though Kagura was not sure. He noted that Yoshiro was already a formidable combatant who was actively undertaking missions for the 5th Division in the Gotei 13 and that the 5th Division's Captain, Ryōta Hachirō, had taken a personal interest in the boy. They thus determined that it was best they find an alternative encase they cannot have Shiju. Jimi offers Sojiro Kori as a possibility. Kagura asks if the boy is any relation to Kusaka Kori. Jimi responds in the positive: the two are brothers. Kagura, with a devious smile, orders Jimi to watch the two.

Prototype Unleashed![]

ShijuAcademy

Shiju.

Shiju sped through his first year at the Shinō Academy without incident despite being of low-birth and a member of the special accelerated class, which consisted mostly of high-born nobles. He took to observing his surroundings and listened to the conversations taking place around him, and was noted by his instructors to react well to new situations with little surprise. During his second year his class was taken on an expedition to the World of the Living to practice Konsō. He listened and observed his instructors throughout the lesson but soon became distracted, his habit of observing his surroundings alerting him to the sudden danger. The class was subsequently approached by a cloaked figure Shiju deduced to be a Hollow, though its true nature eluded him. Kagura had finally moved on the boy.

Kaguraprototype

The creature uncloaked.

The creature subsequently attacked and the instructors where swiftly incapacitated, as Shiju observed. He was expecting to die there and then -- not knowing he was to be captured -- and closed his eyes, but was shocked instead to hear the sound of scraping steel, and when his eyes snapped open he retreated backwards using Shunpo. His saviour, a tall man with black-coloured hair and a large dragon-like tattoo inscribed on his back, stood firmly between Shiju, the creature, and the class of shocked onlookers. The man introduced himself as Yoshiaki Hiroshi and urged the students to stay back as he fought the creature. During the battle, Yoshiaki noted with confusion that the creature's spiritual power contained traces of not only Hollow, but Shinigami and Quincy reiatsu as well, and was shocked by how hard it was pushing him. Shiju, meanwhile, glimpsed a cloaked being observing events, but avoided eye contact. Shiju's attention was suddenly drawn by a mighty explosion. Yoshiaki had employed a near dance-like motion and ran the creature through the chest before quickly backing away. He noted aloud that the creature had attempted to use a Cero on him which had backfired. He asked if everyone was alright. The instructors, regaining conciousness, demanded Yoshiaki step back, which he does. He proceeds to leave the scene using Shunpo but not before telling Shiju his name once more and telling the young man that he was the only one amongst them with a backbone.

Shiju returned to the Academy and was informed that the man who saved them had done so not out of the goodness of his heart, but because it somehow served his own ends. Shiju did not share this view but there was little he could and life returned to normal. Yoshiaki, meanwhile, suspected Kagura's involvement, and returned to the Soul Society to converse with Anika Shihōin. He confided to her that he had encountered a boy by the name of Shiju whom he suspected might have seen something or someone -- possibly Kagura -- during his battle with the creature, and asked Anika for information. She told him to be patient and wait. Two days later Anika admitted to having a bad feeling regarding the whole situation, prompting Yoshiaki to claim that these feelings of hers where usually right. He left to "watch and observe" and, with Anika's help, entered the Seireitei for the first time since his exile. Shiju's life returned to normal but the boy was beginning to note peculiar events happening within the Academy.

The Trap is Sprung[]

ShijuEscape

Shiju's attempt at escape.

In the subsequent month Shiju began to notice a series of oddities, particularly whilst he was attending his classes. Many of his peers had taken leaves of absence and while some returned, others did not even after their supposed leave had expired, particularly Sojiro Kori. Shiju resolved to take matters directly to the Head Instructor of the Academy but, to his shock, stumbled upon two cloaked men, the former of whom he recognized as the same man who had casually observed events one month prior. The duo took note of his presence and the white-haired man attempted to move towards him, but was cut off by a throng of students as the days classes came to an end. Resolving to continue on with his original intention Shiju was instead surrounded by his fellow students, who had been told that he was the one responsible for the disappearances in the Academy. With no other choice Shiju flees in fear of his life. At the same time Yoshiaki disguises himself as an academy instructor of similar appearance to himself and successfully infiltrates the complex at Anika's direction, his intent to follow up a vague order from Anika which consisted of "just go".

ShijuYoshiaki

Shiju heading out with Yoshiaki to begin their training.

Shiju, meanwhile, failed to shake his pursuers even after ditching them with Sekienton, and was discovered in an old area of the Academy. Before harm could be done to him however Yoshiaki intervened and knocked the students unconscious with a wave of spiritual energy, at which point he reintroduced himself. Shiju introduced himself and thanked Yoshiaki for saving his life twice now. Yoshiaki waved his thanks aside and asked if he was alright, and then declared that it was time they made themselves scarce. Yoshiaki lifted Shiju and proceeded to flee with an impressive Shunpo, taking him to one of Anika's safe-houses. Exhausted from his ordeal Shiju falls asleep and Yoshiaki converses with Anika regarding the boys fate. The next day Shiju makes it known that he wishes to remain with Yoshiaki, who reveals that this was the plan all along. He claims that the Gotei 13 and the Onmitsukidō will be after them now in addition to Kagura's minions and claims he will train Shiju to protect himself. As Shiju's eyes light up Yoshiaki further asks if Shiju has ever heard of the "Yuengiri", thus cementing the basis of their training.

Amagai, Maiko and Akihiko are led into a darkened room with numerous types of weaponry lining the walls. Amagai motions for the twins to take note of the figures standing in the shadows, leading Akihiko to whisper that he does not like this. Maiko agrees. A man with light purple-coloured hair and a prominent scar on his face approaches the trio and claims that they have been singled out for their skills in the recent completion of their missions. Amagai speaks up and asks what he is talking about. The man states that the group he serves have been monitoring Rōjin's team and that their recent missions have been tests. He proceeds to throw weapons at each of the three, with Amagai gaining a tuning-fork-like weapon. Maiko and Akihiko receive weapons with a spiked hilt with identical appearances. As soon as they take them the man tells them to leave, before swiftly vanishing himself. As Amagai leaves he ponders his new "gift" and is reminded of his father's final words.

Patrol Corps arc Part III

Knowing that he has some time before he needs to return to his team, Amagai seeks out Ryan Kuchiki, whom he finds sparring with Miria Fujibayashi in the training grounds just outside of the Kuchiki family manor. As he suspects Ryan is aware of his meeting with the Kasumiōji clan and he is beckoned inside, with Ryan asking Miria if she could send Sojiro to him. Amagai cautiously reveals his new "gift", whilst explaining the circumstances behind it, and asks Ryan if it is what he thinks it is, which Ryan reluctantly confirms. He tells Amagai that he will have Sojiro keep a closer eye on the Kasumiōji in hopes of learning the identities of these mysterious men. Amagai then requests that Ryan also report to Yamamoto, but stresses the need for additional time before they make any move beyond surveillance. Ryan agrees and suggests that Amagai return to his team. Before Amagai leaves Ryan gives Amagai their next assignment and tells him to have fun, for its quite simply a patrol run through the twenty-seventh district of Western Rukongai. Amagai remarks that he'll likely have more to fear from thugs than Hollow and thanks Ryan for his time.

Patrol Corps arc Part IV

Upon his return to his team Amagai informs Rōjin of Ryan's assignment who proceeds to pair him with Maiko and Akihiko, whilst encouraging them to take advantage of their new gifts. Chiharu also suggests that they watch out for the so-called "Scarlet Flash", but also advises that he could have already moved on. In Tsururi Amagai trails behind his companions, who both appear engrossed in their new weapons. He mentally notes that he won't be so easily swayed and thinks of his father. When Akihiko demands to know why Amagai looks like such a sour puss Amagai tells him that it is none of his business and suggests that they continue with their patrol. Maiko, however, claims he has been acting strangely ever since they where called to the Kasumiōji manor. Amagai, however, cuts through the head of a Hollow who successfully sneaked up on Maiko and suggests that she stay alert, rather than running her mouth. He proceeds to release his Zanpakutō into Shikai when several more Hollow appear before them. Akihiko remarks that they are foolish for forcing this confrontation and draws his new weapon, which is a move matched by Maiko. When they two release their reiatsu Amagai is shocked to see the tendrils spreading up their arms from their new weapons. Akihiko and Maiko then effortlessly destroy the surrounding Hollow but when Amagai tells them that their mission is complete, the pair turn slowly towards him, with shining eyes and malicious grins.

Patrol Corps arc Part V

The pair attack Amagai despite his protests and he defends himself with a wave of fire from Raika, as he moves to put space between them. He proceeds to flee the scene with Shunpo but is soon caught by Akihiko, who slashes at him with his Bakkōtō. Amagai defends with Raika but is sent hurtling towards the ground, where Maiko attempts to blindside him. Realizing he is at the disadvantage Amagai collects fire in the crook of Raika before swinging his sword forward to release the ball of fire, creating a massive explosion. In the midst of the smoke he throws several sheets into the air and disappears amidst a green flash of light, which his attack disguised, and he soon appears in the barracks of the 1st Division. As soon as he appears he almost has his head smashed open by Madoka Mizuki, who admonishes him for appearing in her room out of nowhere like that. He apologizes and says he wouldn't have come here had he no other reason and claims he will make it up to her later. With that he leaves whilst resolving to put his and Yamamoto's plan into effect to bring the Kasumiōji clan to justice.

He complains that there is always some fanfare when the Royal Family is concerned, leading Matsumoto to remind him to be careful with what he says. The pair then sense something amiss as a ball of electricity smashes into one of the carriages, and a number of fires erupt all around them. Hitsugaya orders Matsumoto to rally the 10th Division as he flash-steps away. The attackers, revealing themselves to be Arrancar, attack again. The fire-wielding Arrancar is intercepted by Hitsugaya who nearly freezes her sword, though she evades him.

Toshirohistory10

Hitsugaya attempts to remove the man's mask.

Hitsugaya is then stabbed in the stomach by a masked individual and the two proceed to battle each other. Hitsugaya is surprised when the man remarks that this reminds him of old times and attempts to remove his mask, though he fails. Regardless Hitsugaya deduces the man's identity and prepares to give chase when he flees, but is stopped by Matsumoto calling out to him. He offers no explanation and simply vanishes using Shunpo, shocking Matsumoto. Hitsugaya wanders the World of the Living but soon succumbs to his injuries and falls unconscious.

Part II.
Toshirohistory11

Hitsugaya wakes up in the house of Kenji Hiroshi, who treated his wounds and kept him hidden from the Onmitsukidō.

When he next awakens Hitsugaya finds himself in a bed with his wounds bandaged. When he attempts to rise he is told not to overexert himself or he will end up reopening his wound. Hitsugaya thanks this person for treating him and introduces himself. His rescuer introduces himself as Kenji Hiroshi, who claims the Onmitsukidō have been scouring the area. Kenji asks if Hitsugaya would know anything about that but is met only with silence. Kenji scratches his head in exasperation, claiming Captains have always given him trouble. Hitsugaya retorts that he is no longer a Captain, with Kenji replying that he can stay as long as he wants if that is the case. As Kenji leaves, Hitsugaya recalls the reports circulated to the Gotei 13 regarding Kenji, and remarks it was somewhat exaggerated.

Part III.
Toshirohistory13

Hitsugaya departs Kenji's home despite his wounds not being fully healed.

Toshirohistory12

The Arrancar girls return, intent on attacking Hitsugaya.

Later that same evening Hitsugaya, leaving behind a note with the words "Thank you", departs Kenji's residence. Outside he is intercepted by Kenji, who remarks that Hitsugaya isn't really in the condition to be going anywhere. He then forcibly relocates him as a ball of electricity and fire converge on Hitsugaya's former location. Hitsugaya, recognizing the pair, moves to attack, but is stopped by Kenji before he can do so. Hitsugaya asks him what he is doing. Kenji tells Hitsugaya to leave, noting his task must be important, otherwise he wouldn't be attempting to move in such a state or go to such lengths to evade the Onmitsukidō. He claims that he will watch his back and take care of the Arrancar and catch up with him later. Hitsugaya, after a moment of hesitation and a stinging retort that he never asked for Kenji's help, thanks him again and departs with the Arrancar giving chase. Kenji, releasing his Shikai, moves past them both with an accelerated Shunpo and reiterates his earlier words: they'll be facing him and him alone. Hitsugaya leaves the scene as an explosion of fire and electricity obstructs Kenji from view.

Part IV.
Toshirohistory14

Tōshirō Hitsugaya attacks Shūhei Hisagi and Izuru Kira with his Bankai, leaving them critically injured.

Hitsugaya rests in an old shrine on the outskirts of Karakura Town and falls asleep. He is awoken however by the arrival of Lieutenants Shūhei Hisagi and Izuru Kira. Hisagi demands that he surrender himself and allow them to take him back to the Seireitei for questioning. Hitsugaya emerges, declaring he will do no such thing, and rushes to attack. Hisagi and Izuru manage to intercept his attack and, attempting to reason with him, state that this will be considered rebellion. Hitsugaya tells them to back off but Hisagi refuses, leading Hitsugaya to repel them both. Hisagi manages to temporarily paralyse him with Kidō. Hitsugaya releases his Bankai in retaliation. Hisagi and Izuru are left in a critical state, as Hitsugaya flees again.

Sojirohistory4

Sōjirō Kusaka attacks Kenji Hiroshi, warning him not to interfere again, or he will be eliminated.

Kenji senses Hitsugaya's reiatsu. He moves to investigate, fearing the worst. As he does so he is attacked by a wave of ice, which freezes the street. Kenji jumps clear and states it was dangerous and tells his attacker to reveal himself. His attacker tells him not to interfere again or he will be eliminated. Releasing his Zanpakutō, Kenji says he'll need more ice. The masked man releases his Zanpakutō and attacks, but Kenji counters with a surge of electricity. As the smoke clears he notes the man to have vanished. Kenji decides to investigate Hitsugaya's location, but is interrupted by the Arrancar.

Part V.
Toshirohistory15

Hitsugaya finally catches up with Sōjirō.

Toshirohistory16

Sōjirō transports the group to the Soul Society.

Hitsugaya soon tracks Sōjirō down and calls him by his name when the two meet, leading Sōjirō to remove his mask. Sōjirō notes that life has led them on a strange path and reveals himself to be in possession of the stolen Ōin when asked by Hitsugaya where it is. Sōjirō claims he will use the Kyūtai to destroy the Soul Society and fulfil their shared dream, as lightning begins to crackle around them. Hitsugaya asks what a Kyūtai is but at that point Kenji returns, chased by the two Arrancar from before, who move to stand at Sōjirō's side. Hitsugaya reprimands Kenji for not leaving well enough alone, stating this is not his affair, but Kenji disagrees. He tells Hitsugaya that he made it his affair when two Arrancar tried to assault an injured man outside his own home. Kenji then fills Hitsugaya in on the nature of the Kyūtai, calling the Ōin in Sōjirō's possession the "Golden Kyūtai". Sōjirō, stating it is time, uses the Ōin to transport everyone to the Sōkyoku Hill in Soul Society. Hitsugaya asks how this is possible, with Kenji noting that the Golden Kyūtai has the power to manipulate space and time as the wielder wishes.

Part VI.
Toshirohistory18

The Shinigami move to arrest Sōjirō following Anika Shihōin and Kenji Hiroshi's explanation of events.

Toshirohistory17

Hitsugaya attacks Sōjirō himself, claiming that it is his fight and his alone.

Sōjirō, believing that Hitsugaya will help him claim vengeance for the past, tells his old friend to cut the Ōin. Instead Hitsugaya attacks Sōjirō and forces him to block, leading the latter to ask what Hitsugaya is doing. He claims that Sōjirō should leave the Soul Society out of this, that it should be him he is fighting, and pushes Sōjirō back. Kenji intercepts the Arrancar, telling them they won't get past him, as Hitsugaya continues to clash with Sōjirō. They release their respective Zanpakutō and clash in mid-air as the forces of the Gotei 13 arrive. The former Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō, Anika Shihōin, leaps from the assembled group and attacks the Arrancar using Shunkō, as Kenji finishes them off with a full-powered Jitsugen. She then remarks that Kenji and Hitsugaya have done well. Hitsugaya begins to ask what she means but is stopped by Kenji, who whispers that Anika has things well in-hand. Anika reveals that Kenji, following Hitsugaya's departure from his home, contacted her and asked her to do some digging for him regarding a "Sōjirō Kusaka". Hitsugaya asks how Kenji even knew that name, with Kenji claiming Hitsugaya murmured it often in his sleep when he was treating his wound.

Captain-Commander Yamamoto orders the assembled Shinigami to attack Sōjirō.

Part VII.
Toshirohistory19

Hitsugaya and Sōjirō reconcile with one another before the latter's death.

Hitsugaya attacks Sōjirō and the two old friends charge at one another, with Hitsugaya running Sōjirō through the heart. Hitsugaya then pulls him into a rough embrace and tells him that they will always be friends. Sōjirō thanks Hitsugaya for this and bids farewell as his spiritual body vanishes. Following Hitsugaya asks Kenji how this could have happened. Kenji again explains the abilities of the Ōin, but postulates that something else must have been responsible for Sōjirō ending up in Hueco Mundo where he recruited the female Arrancar. He claims however that he has no proof. Hitsugaya asks him what he plans to do now. Kenji claims he will return to his travels around the World of the Living, noting that the Gotei 13 cramp his style, but before departing he notes that Hitsugaya isn't half bad. Hitsugaya bids him farewell and silently thanks him for all his help.

Part VIII.
Sojirohistory3

Sōjirō, revived and fully healed, takes up his broken Zanpakutō with complete amnesia.

Sōjirō, coming to, recognizes the landscape around him as Hueco Mundo. When he weakly asks how he got here he feels his thumping head, stating that he remembers a bright blue light. He is answered by a white-haired Arrancar, who tells him he was lucky. Sōjirō tries to stand but is pushed to the floor. The Arrancar states he does not know what Teki has planned for him, but then laughs, leading Sōjirō to ask what is so funny and who "Teki" is. The Arrancar says he has said too much again and warns Sōjirō to brace himself for doing what he is about to do on a living being is a painful experience for those involved. Sōjirō screams in agony as the Arrancar stabs him in the stomach and channels his reiatsu through him. Several hours later Sōjirō, alone and with no idea who he is, is told by the white-haired Arrancar to come with him. Sōjirō agrees, picks up his broken Zanpakutō and bloodstained cloak, and follows after the Arrancar with Shunpo.

Bount Incident[]

Part I.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya yells at his Lieutenant, Matsumoto, to stop leaving his office in such a state and orders her to clean it up. Before she can reply however Hitsugaya cuts her off and claims that he has important matters to discuss with the Captain-Commander. Before leaving he states that he expects the room to be tidy and the paperwork completed by the time he returns. He soon arrives at the Captain-Commanders office and finds Lieutenant Shūhei Hisagi standing outside the door. He asks Hisagi what brings him here today. Hisagi claims he received word regarding a mission to the World of the Living and was told to wait outside. Hitsugaya reveals that he too was contacted regarding a mission in the World of the Living. The two are then beckoned inside by Yamamoto.

Elsewhere, Anika Shihōin enters the main bedroom of her Kagamino safe-house, where she finds Kenji Hiroshi and Lisa Yadōmaru sleeping. She kicks Kenji in the stomach to wake him though Kenji kicks her in the face reflexively and demands to know what she's doing. Lisa, draped in the bed sheets, calmly greets Anika before casually remarking that Kenji should find something to wear. It is only then that Kenji notices that he's butt-ass nude. He snatches his boxers up from the floor whilst calling Anika a demon.

In the Soul Society Hitsugaya and Hisagi leave Yamamoto's office. Hisagi requests permission to square away some details before the two depart, which Hitsugaya allows. Once back in his own office Hitsugaya in not surprised to see that Matsumoto ignored his order. He yells her name in frustration when he finds a note taped to his desk; he doesn't bother reading it. Hisagi, meanwhile, meets with Captain Komamura. The Captain asks him what was so important that the meeting could not wait, leading Hisagi to reveal their recent mission: Hitsugaya and him are to hunt a rogue Shinigami known as Maki Ichinose who was last sighted near Kagamino City in the World of the Living. Hisagi requests that Komamura take temporary command of the 9th Division due to his participation in the hunt. Komamura accepts and reveals that he already received word from the Captain-Commander regarding this earlier in the day, causing Hisagi to breathe a sigh of relief.

In the World of the Living, however, Kenji and Lisa listen as Anika tells them of the Bount. She informs the pair that her initial investigation turned up evidence suggesting the Bount's involvement but further notes that she has no personnel in Kagamino. Lisa asks if this is why they are being head-hunted which Anika acknowledges. Kenji reminds her however that Aizen is still looking for the Visored and that he won't put them at risk of discovery. He further claims that Kusaka, Ino and Kazuma are currently helping Kei Yume and won't be back for some time. Anika is unperturbed however. She tells Kenji that she's brought him someone who can help. At this a man enters the room who greets Kenji by name whilst claiming its been a while. Lisa inquires after the man's identity with Kenji introducing him as Yoshiro Kazuki.

Part II.

Kenji and Yoshiro flash-step through the skies of Kagamino City in their Shinigami forms. Kenji notes that Yoshiro more-or-less dropped off the grid after his second year in the Academy and asks where he went and what he was doing. Yoshiro says he will explain everything eventually but not now and instead questions Kenji regarding the woman he seen him with, noting that he never pulled anything so attractive in the Academy. Kenji also claims that that story can wait and suggests they instead focus on finding the mansion Anika says the Bount are using. He quickly smacks Yoshiro in the back of the head, leading Yoshiro to claim that he hasn't changed at all.

Elsewhere, Hitsugaya and Hisagi exit the Senkaimon and step out into an alleyway in Kagamino. Hisagi remarks that it has been a while since his last posting in the World of the Living, though Hitsugaya remains silent. He thinks of Sōjirō Kusaka but claims nothing is wrong when Hisagi asks if he is alright. The duo leap into the air where they glimpse two Shinigami in the distance. Hisagi correctly notes that they are currently the only Shinigami who are supposed to be assigned to the area. Hitsugaya flash-steps ahead and quickly overtakes the duo. Before he can draw his sword one of the Shinigami surprisingly calls to him by name, at which point Hitsugaya realises that one of the men is Kenji. He demands to know what he's doing here. Kenji counters by claiming that Hitsugaya stole his line. He then brings Hitsugaya up to speed as Hisagi arrives. Hitsugaya claims afterwards that the Captain-Commander stated their Shinigami target was also seen at this mansion, meaning their target is a shared one. Yoshiro however intervenes and states that they'll go their separate ways from here. Kenji, however, disagrees. He argues that they may as well fight together than continue on alone. Hisagi, agreeing, states that there is safety in numbers. Hitsugaya opts to flash-step ahead regardless whilst noting he will leave them all behind otherwise.

Anika, meanwhile, communicates with Yamamoto, whose image appears on a large screen in her Kagamino safe-house. She asks the Captain-Commander whether or not it was wise to include Kenji and Yoshiro in this mission without alerting the Central 46. Yamamoto remains silent for a time before finally stating that Kenji must work with them if he is to continue to operate in the manner he has up until now. Anika reminds him that neither Kenji, Yoshiro or his friends like to cooperate.

Part III.
Main article -- Bount Conflict.
Part IV.

Kenji finds Anika in her Kagamino safe house and immediately asks her about Maki, whom he believes to be one of her subordinates. Anika admits that he is and asks what Kenji has in mind, though Kenji merely states that she'll see soon enough. At this point Yoshiro enters and states his desire to join Kenji, believing they are thinking along similar lines. Anika, fearful that Kenji is about to do something stupid, suggests he slows down and thinks about his actions. Kenji, however, claims that he is tired of cooperating with the Soul Society, and asks Yoshiro to follow him. Elsewhere Hitsugaya is met with a frosty reception from Yamamoto when he makes his report -- in which he lies regarding Kenji and Yoshiro's involvement -- and is told to quickly hunt down the surviving Bount. Hisagi remains silent unless to fill in additional details, but once outside he asks Hitsugaya quietly why he made it appear to Yamamoto that Kenji and Yoshiro where responsible for the dead Bount, when it was actually Hitsugaya and himself who killed them. Hitsugaya remarks that there are certain politics to consider when Kenji is involved in their missions and admits that he would simply like to take some of the heat off his friend.

Meanwhile Kenji and Yoshiro track down Maki using Anika's network of agents and defends himself when attacked, with Yoshiro looking on. Maki notes that he was almost ready to deliver his report to Anika when Kenji and his team appeared out of nowhere and places the blame squarely at Kenji's feet for Jin escaping. Kenji tells him that he should blame the Soul Society and explains his own status as a "convenient ally", and asks him if he truly thinks he can return to the Soul Society considering Yamamoto has already ordered his death once. Maki ceases his attack and sheathes his Zanpakutō and asks Kenji what he has in mind. Kenji extends his hand in friendship and implores Maki to set aside his former loyalty to the Soul Society and join him in exile. Maki, taking Kenji's hand, agrees, and asks what he intends to do now. It is Yoshiro who tells Maki that they will do the Soul Society one last favour though Kenji claims that he and Maki will go on alone. In the meantime he tasks Yoshiro with a message for Kusaka in order to bring him, Kazuma and Ino up-to-date. Kenji and Maki then ask Anika to arrange for travel to the Soul Society, which she reluctantly agrees to. She warns Kenji however that she won't be able to help as openly as she has until now should he continue down this path.

Part V.

Using technology developed specially by the S.R.D.I to track Bount based on Hitsugaya's report, Hitsugaya and Hisagi proceed to track down Jin and his underlings, whom they discover in Northern Rukongai. As the two prepare for battle Kenji and Maki appear and immediately release their respective Zanpakutō. Kenji apologises to Hitsugaya for being late and immediately attacks Jin's Bount alongside Hisagi, with Hitsugaya and Maki staring Jin down. Maki quietly and quickly explains his Zanpakutō's abilities, which he claims Jin has no knowledge of, prompting Hitsugaya to go full-out and release his Bankai. As the Shinigami battle the Bount Maki releases his Zanpakutō, causing the Bount to fall into disarray as they strike illusions, with the real Kenji, Hitsugaya and Hisagi being rendered invisible by Nijigasumi. Hitsugaya proceeds to freeze Jin's Bount with Kenji shattering them to pieces with a surging blast of electricity from Aoi Inazuma. Jin, evading Hitsugaya's ice, is instead attacked from behind by Maki, who thanks Jin for his help in the past. He is subsequently attacked by Maki byt not before inflicting a serious wound on Maki in-turn, prompting Kenji to shield his newfound ally. He insists that he will heal Maki. Hitsugaya, meanwhile, turns on Jin and rushes him, before forcibly freezing the Bount leader. Seizing the initiative Hisagi strikes at Jin with his Shikai, killing him instantly.

Now back on his feet Maki joins Kenji as the latter approaches Hitsugaya and Hisagi. Hitsugaya mentions that, in the chaos of the fight, he lost sight of Kenji and is very sorry for this, claiming that this is what his report will detail at any rate. Hisagi makes the same promise and distances himself as Hitsugaya and Kenji regard one another coolly. Kenji thanks Hitsugaya for his help and encourages him to reach out if he ever needs help in the future, stating that he'll be there regardless of what the Soul Society think of his decision to sever all ties. Hitsugaya, however, hopes he doesn't see Kenji again, because if he does it will likely be as enemies. Kenji agrees with this assessment and the two friends part company. Maki asks Kenji if he is truly alright leaving things as they are but Kenji states that he has no choice at the moment.

Kenji returns to Kagamino to meet up with friends and finds Kusaka, Ino, Kazuma and Yoshiro waiting for him alongside Lisa and Arisa, who runs to hug her father. She asks him where he was and Kenji informs her that he made some new friends and introduces everyone to Maki. Lisa, however, asks how things went with his old ones, and explains that Kusaka told her everything. Kenji admits that things will likely be complicated for a while, especially with the Gotei 13, which leads Arisa to complain that he disappears for long periods every time he uses the word "complicated". Kenji apologises and is then taken to the side by Kusaka. He asks Kenji just what he has gotten them into now. Kenji admits that he doesn't know but suggests they not worry about it now.

Kasumiōji Conspiracy[]

Preparations arc[]

Part I.

Once back in the Soul Society Hitsugaya approaches Anika and asks her to get in contact with Kenji for him. Anika asks him why he needs Kenji's help though Hitsugaya assures her he is not attempting to arrest him or bring him before the Gotei 13, claiming that he instead needs a favour. Anika agrees to make the arrangements but requests they keep things discreet as Kenji is still viewed as a criminal. He meets Kenji in the outskirts of Northern Rukongai with Kenji remarking on the suddenness of Hitsugaya's request. Hitsugaya asks Kenji to return to the Gotei 13, saying his strength and experience fighting Arrancar is sorely needed, though Kenji refutes this. Kenji claims that Hitsugaya will surpass them all, though Hitsugaya counters this statement, saying Kenji was every bit the prodigy he was. Kenji refuses to help the Gotei 13 but agrees to help Hitsugaya, telling him he will help him to make his preparations for the war.

Part II.

The pair meet the following day in Kisuke Urahara's underground training room. Kenji asks Hitsugaya how many Arrancar he has fought. He recounts his experiences with Shawlong, Yammy and Luppi, with Kenji recounting his experiences with Averian and his forces. Kenji proceeds to don his Hollow mask and attacks Hitsugaya. Hitsugaya demands to know what Kenji is doing as he blocks his strike. Kenji repels him and claims experience is the only way to deal with Arrancar and their kind. Kenji explains that he is a Visored: a Shinigami who has illegally gained the powers of a Hollow, and that he is the antithesis to an Arrancar. Kenji further states that if Hitsugaya wants experience he need only spar with him and he will get all the experience he needs. The duo spend several hours sparring, with Ino Choyo healing their injuries as and when they require it.

Part III.

Hitsugaya finishes his sparring with Kenji and thanks him again for his assistance, noting he has learned a lot. He asks again if Kenji would be willing to help the Gotei 13. Kenji states that Hitsugaya and the Gotei 13 will have his help indirectly, which leads Hitsugaya to ask what he means. Kenji reveals that Anika has been busy putting together a vanguard of sorts that will be waiting in reserve. Hitsugaya asks why a reserve force would be needed. Kenji then reveals the existence of the Privaron Espada: former Espada who have lost their position, but are still far stronger than any Arrancar sans the reigning Espada themselves. Kenji states the group put together by Anika will be there encase the Privaron Espada make a move. The pair wish one another luck as they go their separate ways once more.

Pre-Fullbringer Incident[]

Part I.

As part of his training to refine his control over Hyōrinmaru, Hitsugaya obtains leave from the Captain-Commander to travel to the World of the Living, citing his desire to speak with the Visored, where he visits Kenji's home. Kenji is surprised to find a Captain on his doorstep and asks Hitsugaya what brings him all the way out here. Hitsugaya states his desire to control his Zanpakutō with more ease and requests Kenji's aid in doing so. Kenji asks if Hitsugaya has anywhere to stay at the moment. When told no Kenji invites him inside and introduces Hitsugaya to Kusaka Kori and Kazuma Nishiki. Ino welcomes Hitsugaya to their home and tells him to get comfortable, with Kenji telling Kazuma to roll out his futon in Kusaka's room until Hitsugaya's business is resolved. Ino claims she was in the middle of dishing out some stew and puts out a plate for Hitsugaya, who thanks her. He finishes his first mouthful when Kusaka makes a jibe about free-loaders eating his food, with Kenji telling him to shut up. Kenji then states that they'll strike whilst the irons hot first thing in the morning and see what their options are from there. Hitsugaya agrees.

Part II.

The next morning Kenji takes Hitsugaya to the underground training room of the Visored, where he and Hitsugaya are admonished by Hiyori Sarugaki. She demands to know why Kenji brought the perverted midget Captain with him. Hitsugaya quickly reminds her that she is shorter than he is, though Hiyori remarks that it's funny that he doesn't deny being a pervert and launches into a successive spree of curse-ridden admonishments. Hitsugaya tells her to cooperate or go away, claiming he is busy, reiterating that she is the midget. Hiyori then whacks him with one of her sandals before turning to admonish Kenji further, though he is nowhere to be found. Hitsugaya remarks that she likely scared him off and demands that she be his sparring partner, because she cost him his original one. She screams that she won't help but when Hitsugaya draws his Zanpakutō, Hiyori retaliates herself, blocking his strike. On the sidelines, behind a rock formation, Kenji claims that he got away just in-time. He silently apologizes to Hitsugaya before flash-stepping away.

Part III.

A month later Hitsugaya plans to return to the Soul Society to continue his solitary training, content that what he has learned will help him bring his control of Hyōrinmaru to the next level. Kenji asks if he's sure he doesn't want to stick around for a while longer. Hitsugaya claims he has probably stayed too long, citing Hiyori's argumentative nature as a serious waste of his time, but he admits that her help was greatly appreciated. Kenji asks him if he would say that if she where here, with Hitsugaya saying no. He is then struck from behind with a slipper and called a stupid baldy by Hiyori, who had just arrived, seemingly having heard the whole conversation. He asks her why she bothered to come. Kenji takes the opportunity to chide Hiyori about having a crush on Hitsugaya, who blushes, whilst Hiyori stutters over her words trying to refute what Kenji says. Kenji then vanishes, achieving a rare victory over her, as Hiyori curses him. Before Hitsugaya leaves he thanks Hiyori for her help. She snorts dismissively at him and turns her back to leave as she says "Later, then". Hitsugaya notes he would like that and steps through the waiting Senkaimon, telling her to be sure and visit.

Part IV.

A week later Hitsugaya returns to the seclusion of his cave and swiftly freezes its interior with his reiatsu. He then conjures an icy-mist by releasing Hyōrinmaru into Shikai, noting that he can do this more easily now. A voice then rings out through the cave, claiming she'd like to hope he was doing it easier now, referring to him as a baldy. Hitsugaya fails to hide his irritation and demands to know why Hiyori has come. She angrily states that she owes Kenji a favour that he is now collecting on, noting quickly that she's not here to help him or any Shinigami, especially him. Hitsugaya says she is a poor liar before the pair begin sparring once more. Outside the cave Matsumoto claims the two make an interesting pair and asks Kenji, who is standing off to the side, if this was his plan from the start. Kenji claims that Lisa informed him of their bickering during the battle with Aizen and that he had a gut feeling they'd get along, nothing more. They turn to leave as Hiyori's voice, calling Hitsugaya a pervert, echoes in the cave depths, with Hitsugaya roaring at her to shut her snaggle-toothed mouth.

Post-Fullbringer Incident[]

Post-Fullbringer Incident Part I.

Kenji comments on the quietness of the Visored's old compound now that Shinji, Kensei, Rose and Mashiro have rejoined the Gotei 13. Ino asks him what he expects, reminding him the Visored aren't considered enemies of the state any more. Kenji, however, notes that the Soul Society are still treating him and Van like they are pariahs, despite their exploits in Kagamino City. Ino reminds Kenji that he put entire squadrons of the Onmitsukidō to the sword in the past to preserve his freedom, and Van helped kill a great many of the 9th Division during his flight many years ago. Kenji scoffs, saying those are little things, but admits that she has a point.

The following day Kenji is joined by Hitsugaya, who came on the latter's request. Hitsugaya notes that it has been a while and asks what all the urgency was about. Kenji claims it was the only way to drag him out here, noting that he's so serious he wouldn't respond to a social call. Hitsugaya cuts in claiming that, as a Captain, he has certain responsibilities, and fears leaving things in Matsumoto's hands for too long. Kenji decides to cut right to the heart of the matter then and hands Hitsugaya a segmented bracelet, with the latter asking what it is. Kenji explains that, should Hitsugaya wear it and need to, he will be able to contact him telepathically from any location and at any time without arousing suspicion. Hitsugaya, accepting the gift and clasping it to his right-wrist, says he has overstayed his welcome. Before he leaves however Kenji tells him to visit Hiyori, noting that Shinji would probably like to know how she's holding up. Hitsugaya groans in response.

Post-Fullbringer Incident Part II.

Quincy Blood War saga[]

Inquel I.

At a Captain's Meeting Captain-Commander Yamamoto reveals the existence of the Wandenreich to the assembled Captains, who are told to prepare for war. Hitsugaya, using his Renkei, contacts Kenji, asking if he has any relevant knowledge regarding the Quincy. Kenji provided Hitsugaya with a brief explanation of their skills, drawing particular attention towards Blut. After the Wandenreich retreat and the Royal Guard depart Soul Society, Hitsugaya again contacts Kenji, who remarks that it is odd for him to contacted so often. Hitsugaya tells Kenji that he needs a favour and explains what has been happening in the Soul Society. Kenji surmises that Hitsugaya, who relies on his Zanpakutō predominately, wants to learn to fight without a Bankai and asks if he is correct with his assessment. Hitsugaya agrees realizing he needs to build a more solid swordsmanship foundation. Shortly after Kenji arrives in the Seireitei alongside Kusaka Kori. Kusaka tells Hitsugaya that he is going to be put through hell, as Kenji and Kusaka draw their Zanpakutō. They advise Hitsugaya to take a ready stance because he'll be facing them both.

Inquel II.

Hitsugaya, after being grievously injured through his battles with Bazz-B and Cang Du, collapses as he approaches the heavily injured Matsumoto. In his desperation Hitsugaya contacts Kenji via Renkei and explains the situation, as well as the state that he and Rangiku are in. Kenji, fearing the worst, assures Hitsugaya that he is on his way. He instructs him to grab hold of Matsumoto and proceeds to channel his spiritual power to the pair through Hitsugaya's Renkei, further imploring Hitsugaya not to die in a place like that. Kenji sets out alone, noting that Kusaka always picks the best times to be absent, and notes that Hitsugaya is running out of time.

Inquel III.

Kenji arrives on-scene in the aftermath of Mayuri's battle with Hitsugaya and demands to know what the hell has been happening. Mayuri, admonishing Kenji for not addressing him properly, tells him to keep quiet for he has no authority here. Kenji takes in the scene, noting Hitsugaya's state, and quietly asks who was responsible. Mayuri orders Kenji to vent his frustration against the invading Quincy for the one who did this to Hitsugaya has been dealt with already. Kenji asks what has happened to Hitsugaya. Mayuri explains that he has been "zombified" but because he was alive when he was converted, then he may be capable of returning him to normal. Mayuri then notes as an afterthought that the Visored aren't so fortunate. Kenji, incensed, demands to know what he means. Mayuri says that both Kensei and Rose where killed and turned into zombies, and that there state is permanent because they had died before conversion. Kenji, locating their reiatsu, departs the scene, but leaves Mayuri with a warning that he is to look after Hitsugaya and Matsumoto.

Kenji arrives as the zombified Kensei smacks PePe Waccabrada into a nearby building. Mayuri, having finished up with Hitsugaya and Matsumoto, appears to explain events to Byakuya. As this occurs Kenji releases his Zanpakutō and paralyses both Kensei and Rose. Mayuri demands to know what Kenji is doing, noting he has control of them. Kenji admonishes Mayuri, citing the Visored as his friends and allies, and claims he possesses the means to restore them. Kenji brandishes both Asataiyō and Semaiumi, remarking that he was glad that he took the precuation. Mayuri correctly identifies the orbs as two of the legendary Kyūtai, claiming Semaiumi can remove blood impurities, whilst Asataiyō can rearrange and restore a persons body. Using both in conjunction Kenji returns the pair to normal, who slump to the floor unconscious. Kenji, hoisting the two onto his shoulders, reminds Mayuri to look after Hitsugaya and disappears using Shunpo.

Inquel IV.

Kenji arrives on-scene following the departure of Renji and Rukia and notes that both Hitsugaya and Byakuya have seen better days, and asks if they'd like his assistance. He then acknowledges Zaraki and asks aloud how he got into such a state, leading to an expletive response. Kenji moves to Hitsugaya's side with a comment about children growing up too fast. Hitsugaya greets him with a smile before thanking him, whilst Byakuya states that it has been many years since their last meeting. Kenji acknowledges this but says they can catch up later. He takes note of the surroundings and asks Hitsugaya to "make it stormy". Hitsugaya directs his reiatsu towards the heavens as Kenji raises his Shikai aloft. Byakuya suggests they do whatever they plan to do quickly as Gerard attempts another attack, only to be foiled by Byakuya's Bankai. As this occurs Kenji pulls a bolt of lightning from the heavens and cycles it through his Shikai before directing it straight towards Gerard, who staggers backwards. Kenji remarks on the Quincy's durability, noting most things would have been reduced to ash by an attack like that, but claims he'll take the side-effect instead. Hitsugaya reminds Kenji that they are facing a monster in every sense of the word and reveals even freezing him solid did not work. Gerard, however, finds he cannot fully control his body when he attempts to counterattack, and instead stumbles and falls into a building. Kenji reveals the intent behind his attack was never to defeat Gerard, noting that that was well beyond his current power, but rather to cause paralysis through electric shock and prevent him fighting back.

Byakuya notes that all it does is buy them time however and that they still have a rather large problem to deal with, causing Kenji to jokingly remark that Byakuya is capable of joking after all. Gerard, however, overrides his paralysis by using Ransōtengai to control his paralysed limbs, eliciting a groan of annoyance from both Kenji and Hitsugaya. Kenji remarks that Gerard is beginning to annoy him, with Hitsugaya claiming Kenji stole his line. The trio are dispersed when Gerard slams his foot down on their former position, with Kenji proceeding towards the bodies of Shinji and Momo, who had earlier been slammed into the earth and who are now in danger once more. He runs the two clear of the resultant shock-wave whilst jibbing the now-conscious Shinji about his current state, with Shinji remarking that Kenji shouldn't be so cock-sure of himself. Kenji asks how they managed to survive. Shinji claims that they owe Hachi one and asks Kenji to tell Hitsugaya that Momo will live. Kenji sets the pair down atop some stone a reasonable distance away before looking out across the battlefield. He consciously pinpoints the locations of the fallen Visored and breaths a sigh of relieve when he finds them unconscious, but alive. He tells Shinji this who then asks after Rose, Kensei and Mashiro. Kenji states the two Captains are alive but out of action and that they owe him big time, but has no information on Mashiro, though he notes that she was not with Kensei. Kenji then asks if Shinji can lay down some cover, causing the latter to smile broadly as he releases his Zanpakutō into Shikai.

Hitsugaya, meanwhile, jumps clear as Byakuya slams numerous blades into Gerard's midsection, though the younger Captain doubts such tactics will work anymore and relays such to Kenji through their Renkei. He further states that he is at his limit and won't be able to help for much longer. Realising that Byakuya is in similar shape, Kenji flash-steps to Hitsugaya's side and notes that he will buy the two a breather, before donning his Hollow mask. He then proceeds to unleash his Bankai, Aoi Inazuma Kasō, before stating that there is a nice aroma. Kenji proceeds to battle Gerard under the effects of Sakanade, all-the-while noting that a single mistake would spell the end. His spirited effort is cut-short when Gerard fires an arrow towards Byakuya and Hitsugaya which the two successfully avoid. Kenji deduces that the arrow will hit the unconscious Visored and moves at maximum speed to intercept it, causing a massive explosion. Hitsugaya screams Kenji's name as he falls towards the floor but Shinji, despite his injuries, catches him. He admonishes Kenji, calling him an idiot, but thanks him all the same. Kenji weakly grins in response and wonders why he couldn't have been caught by a gorgeous woman like Lisa instead. Everyone present is then surprised when a bright flash of light surrounds Gerard. Immediately afterwards his skin is stripped from his bones and he collapses. Kenji laughs, stating that its typical he gets battered just as their enemy finally dies, though Shinji claims he should just be happy that he's alive. Kenji's eyes begin to close but he is jolted awake when Hitsugaya shares some of his own dwindling reiatsu. Hitsugaya then tells Kenji that he is not allowed to die here because his daughter would be upset.

Blood War Inquel V

Kenji wakes up a few days later in the ruins of the 4th Division barracks. He cautiously inspects his wounds and notes comically that his arms are still attached, which is a good start. He then inspects his legs and heaves a sigh of relief as he comes to the conclusion that he's fine, if a little sore. It's only then that he realizes that the Visored, including Kensei, Rose and Mashiro, are laid out in beds nearby in various states of injury. He asks a nearby nurse how they are all doing, with the woman noting that they will all pull through. Kenji is then thanked and turns to see Shinji sitting up in his bed as he removes a set of headphones which are attached to an ipod. Kenji nonchalantly asks what he's being thanked for which leads Shinji to grin, though he offers to further comment. Kenji then notes that all he did was stand by those who had stood by him during the darkest moment of his life and boldly declares that he'd happily do it again, though he further states that he hopes he doesn't have to intercept anymore colossal spirit arrows.

Shinji then asks him what he plans to do now. Kenji claims he is going to get beyond drunk and then sleep for about a week. He is then told by a familiar voice that he doesn't normally approve of alcohol, appearing to be underage to Human eyes and all, but would make an exception this time. Kenji welcomes Hitsugaya, claiming he knows a good spot in the Rukongai, but admits to being unsure whether it survived the war or not. Lisa, rousing, says she would very much like to find out, claiming she could do with a drink herself. Before she can say anything further however she is kissed by Kenji, who then reprimands her for worrying him, but is soon sent flying by the now-awake Hiyori. Kenji, reacting by throwing his pillow at her, demands she slap Hitsugaya instead, which earns him another slap. Hiyori then rounds on Hitsugaya whom she smacks on the head. Shinji looks on with his usual dead-pan expression and complains about no one showing him any attention.

Blood War Inquel VI

Hitsugaya, having returned to his duties, groans in annoyance at the workload left to him by his Lieutenant. Before he can make any progress however he is interrupted by Kenji, who tells him he's not right in the head for being back to work so soon. He reminds Hitsugaya that they nearly died and that no one would be surprised if he took it easy for a while. Hitsugaya, however, states that work keeps him focused. He then notes that Kenji was supposed to be getting ready for his meeting with the Central 46. Kenji avoids the question and claims that he has more important business to attend to, and is then joined by Matsumoto, Kensei and Rose. Kensei angrily claims that Kenji better have good reasons for ordering them about but is promptly told to be quiet by Rose, who reminds Kensei that he's only alive because of Kenji. Kenji then reveals that Mayuri's follow-up treatment of Hitsugaya and Matsumoto had the effect of shortening their life-spans. He claims that he's here to rectify that problem and subsequently brandishes two orbs -- one blue and one brown. Rose correctly identifies both orbs to be Kyūtai and asks how Kenji came to possess them. He replies that he secured them alongside Van Satonaka some time ago, but does not give details. He subsequently uses the orbs to fully revitalise Hitsugaya and Matsumoto, doing away with any lingering after-effects of Mayuri's treatment.

Kensei, meanwhile, repeats his earlier question, noting that Kenji could have done this without their presence. Kenji admits this but notes that the Central 46 aren't going to leave him o his friends alone, especially since he kept the Kyūtai out of their hands. He confides to his audience that his "meeting" with the Central 46 is simply a means to arrest him, for Mayuri revealed to them that he was in possession of some of the orbs. Rose remarks that Anika was likely responsible for revealing this information to Kenji, with Kensei cursing Mayuri. The five are however shocked when Shunsui himself enters the room, whilst remarking that the conversations is rather dark considering their recent victory. He fixes Kenji with a smile and informs him that it is solely the Central 46 who wish to arrest him. He then tells Kenji that, as far as the Gotei 13 is concerned, he is their ally. He then leaves. Hitsugaya suggests that they all get back to work otherwise they'll arouse suspicion.

Birth of an Epic Rivalry: Kenji vs. Van![]

"Friends should be skilled enough to keep each other sharp. Besides, I can't exactly let you beat me, can I?"
"Beat you? I'll do more than that. I'll leave you in the dust if you aren't careful."
"Oh ho, is that a challenge I'm hearing?
"
—Kenji and Van whilst battling Averian.
KenjiandVan1

Kenji and Van meet again.

Kenji Hiroshi encounters Van Satonaka by chance on a dusty path near a forested area in the World of the Living as the sun begins to set, leading the two acquaintances to strike up a conversation, with Van asking Kenji what he has been up to since their last encounter. Kenji explains some of his encounters with numerous Arrancar, claiming he pissed one off in particular when he killed his younger brother, with Van saying he is enjoying his vacation. In a similar vein to their first meeting Kenji suggests they kill their collective boredom with a sparring match, further noting they never actually finished their last fight. Van, remarking that he should have known this would happen, readily agrees, noting that he has been working on something new that Kenji won't expect.

This event served to reinforce the growing rivalry between the two men; a relationship that would run deep.

Vanclone

Van pressures Kenji with various crystal-based techniques, including clones.

Kenji began matters by launching a wave of lightning to which Van, mimicking his Inner Hollow who had fought Kenji previously, released his Zanpakutō and crystallized the attack, causing Kenji to state he hoped Van hadn't remembered. Van subsequently threw Kenji onto the defensive with an assortment of crystal constructs, crystal clones, lures, and taunts, which culminated in Kenji, donning his Hollow mask, barely defending against a three-fold Cero with a hastily fired Cero of his own. Van states he didn't think Kenji would fall for such cheap lures. Kenji fired a Gran Rey Cero which Van successfully avoided by diving into the forest, countering with a variation of his own. This attack tore through Kenji's subsequent Cero and revealed that the one Van struck was a lightning clone, with the real Kenji flash-stepping in-front of Van to grasp him by the throat. He proceeded to throw Van to the ground followed by two Bala whilst echoing Van's earlier words. This Van, however, proves to be a clone also, leading to a lull.

Kenji tells Van of the assassin currently hounding his steps, unknowing that this man is, in fact, his amnesiac father Dastan Shiba. Van, after being told he would be powerful enough to best him, remarks that he'd enjoy the challenge. The duo prepare to continue their fight when Van, lapsing into a trace-like state, begins to recall his past. Van mistakes Kenji for Luka Kagamine and moves to attack his supposed enemy but rather than defend himself Kenji, much like he did in their previous encounter, leaves himself completely defenceless, whilst urging Van to come back to his senses. Kenji then seizes Van's crystal spear and shatters it, urging his new friend to sense his spiritual power whilst grasping him by the shoulder, which causes Van to calm down. Van apologizes and the two take a break from their battle.

Battle Beyond all Limits! Kenji & Van Join Forces[]

Meanwhile, overhead, a Garganta parts the sky, which is quickly followed by a Cero which impacts a farm house in the distance, causing a massive crater. Van casually remarks that the newly arrived is no ally of theirs, with Kenji remarking that they must be an Arrancar, further asking if Van had ever fought one before. Before Van can even repond Kenji has his shoulder pierced by the Arrancar's Zanpakutō and barely defends against the follow-up attack. The Arrancar then proceeds to surprise Van by slashing him down the chest with the latter noting internally that he's never faced anything of this level before. Kenji stops Van from falling via a Kidō net. He claims they must work together to survive, admitting that he could barely follow his opponents movements.

Van's Rin'ne.

Their shared foe addresses himself as Averian and further states that he will kill Kenji and Van in order to make them a part of himself, leading Van to remark that this wouldn't be a good idea. He claims that their shared personality would likely prove too much for him and proceeds to unleash his Zanpakutō, with Kenji following suit, as the duo launch a combination attack. Averian emerges from this attack relatively unscathed, which leads Van to request that Kenji buy him some time. Kenji, agreeing, releases the power sealed within, and proceeds to engage Averian in close-quarters Zanjutsu. Despite his power-up and lightning-enhancement Kenji is put almost entirely on the defensive, but eventually manages to seize an opportunity and attempts to use Senka. Averian blocks the strike though Kenji claims that this means Averian considered it dangerous, leading the Arrancar to seize Kenji's wrist and, by proximity, his Zanpakutō. He barks at Kenji for grouping him with the likes of themselves and proceeds to charge a Cero at point-blank range. Van, meanwhile, utters a release command which causes him to undertake a transformation. The resultant spiritual power released by Van dispels the Cero before it even reaches Kenji, with the latter marvelling at his friends power. Kenji backs away and Van moves to his side as both resolve to finish things together.

The duo move to attack Averian; Kenji using Gran Rey Cero and Van using Geirdriful, though Averian disperses both attacks with two Gran Rey Cero of his own and proceeds to bind the two in-place using specialized Caja Negacion. He then cuts through both with his Zanpakutō. Kenji's Hollow powers begin to repair his injuries whilst Van utilized Skuld to completely heal his body, and then returns to the offensive. With Kenji sidelined for the time-being he observes Van stabbing at Averian with his tails, noting that Van's strength in his new-form is quite good, and attempts to use Senka once more. As if in response Averian assumes a monstrous one-tailed form of massive proportions and swats Kenji aside casually with his tail, followed quickly by a Cero. Van, noticing this, erects a barrier around Kenji but is struck in the side by Averian's second Cero, and notes afterwards that he hopes Kenji has something up his sleeve. Kenji, asking why Averian just doesn't die, utilizes a fully-powered Kurohitsugi, though Averian breaks free effortlessly. Van asks aloud just what it will take to put this guy away. Averian then assumed a new, octopus-like form with eight arms, though before he can do anything more he is attacked by Anna Satonaka using the powers of Kenji's Zanpakutō, momentarily stunning their foe. As this occurs both Kenji and Van have their strength restored by Kazuma Nishiki's Zanpakutō, leading Kenji to state towards Van that it's time they put Averian down. Kenji and Van synchronized their Gran Rey Cero and Reginleif perfectly which Van then sent directly at Averian through Kami Masune, resulting in a tremendous explosion. Averian, bloodied and with extensive injuries, opts instead to flee, opening a Garganta. Kenji and Van collapse with the duo expressing their shared belief that they make one hell of a team.

In the Wake of Disaster[]

After recovering from their battle with Averian and recuperating overnight, Kenji and Van greet one another the following morning, with Van suggesting Kenji take a dip in the lake to wake himself up. When he does so he lets out a shriek and admonishes Van for his suggestion, but admits he was right: he's certainly awake now. Van responds, claiming he though everyone was familiar with the coldness of lake water, before then suggesting everyone grab something to eat. After this Kenji proceeds to tutor Van in the forms of the Wan'nesu favoured by the ancient Yuengiri, thus beginning the latter's road to eventual mastery of the style. Before going their separate ways Kenji thanks Van again for his help, noting that without him he wouldn't be alive now. Van claims Kenji and friends are no more than danger magnets leading Kenji to remark that its time to start pushing for his Bankai, with Van agreeing. Unknown to Van however is that Kenji had already possessed his Bankai for some time.

Once on their own Kenji asks Kazuma if he recalls an incident in the academy where several students broke out by assaulting the 9th Division and fleeing through a Senkaimon. Kazuma admits it was a big scandal, even after it went all hush-hush, with Ino asking what made Kenji think of this. Kenji reveals that Van was one of the students who orchestrated the escape, further noting that that was one more thing the two had in common. He then states that he and Van will continue to gain strength together to satisfy their shared desire to best the other, reciting what he said to Van: "Friends should be skilled enough to keep each other sharp. Besides, I can't exactly let him beat me, can I?" Kazuma asks how Kenji came to this conclusion, saying neither he nor Van said anything of the sort this morning, though Kenji disagrees. He claims he felt Van's will when they clashed swords and again when they fought side-by-side, telling Kazuma he will understand when he's more in-control of his powers.

Kazuma then leaves Kenji and Ino alone in order to track down Kusaka, who earlier claimed he was off hunting Hollow for bounty points. Taking this opportunity to speak to Kenji alone, Ino tells him she has something important to say. Kenji, noting her seriousness, asks what's wrong. Ino remarks that she was waiting for a better time to tell him but considering how close he just came to be killed, it would be best to let him know now. Kenji notes that she's beginning to scare him a bit. Ino reveals that she is pregnant and will soon give birth to their child. Upon hearing this Kenji explodes into joyous laughter, claiming it to be the best news he's had in a while.

Desperate Rescue[]

Kenji's Survival Against the Odds[]

"Still such thought right now! Find your centre: just like I taught you, underneath the waterfall. Breathe in your fears... and then remove them! This fight is far from over! NOW STAND!!"
—Kyoaku to Kenji.[src]

In the Soul Society Tadashi and Shin discuss the fight Kenji and Van had against Averian, noting that the pair had struck a blow to Averian's pride: for this reason Averian has sought Kenji out for vengeance. Tadashi notes that Kusaka and Ino are both off on another job and can't come to Kenji's aid, with Shin noting the odds aren't good for Kenji. Tadashi notes that the Central 46 have also moved on this: there is to be no aid for Kenji. Shin, however, claims he never received this directive when asked by Tadashi. He cites administrative difficulties, business as a Captain, and his own laziness; he even claims he was probably sleeping. Both Captains secure their Zanpakutō as they set out, noting the things they do for those kids.

In the World of the Living Kenji is driven onto the defensive. Kazuma has long since been knocked unconscious and is slung over Kenji's shoulder as he attempts to flee, though Averian remains implacable. Kenji goads Averian, realizing that insults to his pride result in a hasty reaction, which Kenji resolves to take advantage of. He decides to wait Averian out and utilize a single devastating attack using all his power: all he needs is one opening. Kyoaku assures Kenji he will have his aid but advises his host to commit himself to a hasty retreat afterwards.

Elsewhere, Tadashi and Shin arrive in the World of the Living, with both Captain's taking note of the battle nearby. Shin remarks he had to knock the local Shinigami unconscious. He reassures Tadashi that they will not remember having seen them. Tadashi states they are running out of time.

Kenji, on his knees and beginning to doubt, is ready to be finished off. Kyoaku reprimands his host, ordering him to stand, and claims that this battle is far from over. Kenji manages to block Averian's strike and seizes the opening he had been waiting for: he activates Shunkō, dons his Hollow mask and access Kyoaku's power.

Tadashi & Shin gallery 3

Tadashi and Shin arrive.

Kenji directs everything into a single Jitsugen which successfully knocks Averian back, though it fails to kill him. Kenji commits himself to a retreat but is surprised by the sudden intervention of Tadashi and Shin, with the former sending Kenji away through Kidō. The Captain of the 7th and 11th Division's stand before Averian, with Shin declaring he is pissed off.

Tadashi and Shin vs. Averian[]

Shin asks Tadashi if "Formation Four" sounds good, which Tadashi agrees with. Shin's Zanpakutō suddenly glows as a multitude of solid clones of the 7th Division Captain appear all around. Shin asks if Averian could possibly destroy them all before being swamped and suggests he find the original. Averian, unimpressed, snaps his fingers, stating such cheap illusions will not work on him. A stream of blue flame passes from clone-to-clone, but before they can all be destroyed the remaining five attack Averian directly, who blasts them away with a Cero. Shin notes he never said the clones where illusions and further declares that the flames will not work on him again. Averian, however, internally notes the disappearance of Tadashi, whose spiritual energy has completely vanished. He asks Shin where his friend ran off to, eliciting a laugh from Shin. He suggests once more that Averian should find the original. Elsewhere, Shin and Tadashi note that Averian has barely broken a sweat, with Shin worriedly noting that his clones are falling faster than he thought they would. He wonders aloud how Garian managed to stand against Averian by himself. Tadashi admits his own worry. He further states that they'll have to be very careful, and asks Shin to cover him. Shin nods as his Zanpakutō glows once more.

Averian easily dispatches the Shin-clones through superior movement and swordsmanship, before claiming he expected more of a Captain. As soon as he says this however one of the Shin-clones shimmers, revealing Tadashi. Tadashi presses his advantage, avoids Averian's strike, and follows up with a point-blank sword-slash down Averian's body before releasing his Reīssen. As he flash-steps away Shin encases the Arrancar with Kidō, which contains the explosion. Tadashi states that the battle is far from over and tells Shin that they're going to go with "Formation One", which prompts Shin to disappear and disguise his spiritual energy with Kidō. Tadashi, meanwhile, addresses Averian, and asks how long he's going to keep faking. Tadashi is subsequently thrown completely onto the defensive. He receives a deep gash to his side but manages to twist around and strike at Averian's sword-arm, but Averian dodges. He sends Tadashi flying with a swift kick before moving after him, where he slashes him down the back. Tadashi, however, notes that "she" is finally waking up. He subsequently halts Averian's Zanpakutō with his bare-hand before severing his sword-arm. As Averian backs away he is attacked from behind by Shin, who tuts in annoyance. He reveals he intended to cut Averian cleanly in half, noting that his Hierro is incredibly tough. He further states that he is disappointed with the result: a deep cut in Averian's side.

Averian swiftly heals himself, including his severed arm, to perfect condition. This prompts a groan of irritation from Shin who claims he hates working so hard. Tadashi wonders aloud if Averian can survive a beheading and claims that Shirenya wants to find out. Averian asks if that is the name of Tadashi's Zanpakutō, which Tadashi acknowledges. Shin butts in, saying Shirenya is mean compared to his Amaterasu, whom he claims is beautiful and kind because she does not mind his laziness. Tadashi suggests they utilize "Formation Six", but the two Captains are interrupted by Averian firing two Bala blasts towards them, which is followed up by him cutting Shin across the back. He then kicks him into Tadashi before hitting both with his Cero. Bloodied, Tadashi declares "Pool", which causes him and Shin to be healed of their injuries. Tadashi suggests plan b with Shin launching a Shakkahō skywards.

Shinjishikai1

Shinji arrives.

Averian proudly states however that their annoying "formations" will no longer work. As his reiatsu begins to increase he declares that he will finish things up right now, claiming the two will make a nice "meal". Tadashi admits that he would be worried had they not come prepared. The duo proceed to goad Averian, who launches an attack against them. Unexpectedly blood erupts from Averian's shoulder who demands to know what just happened. Shin, grinning, notes that there is a pleasant aroma hanging in the air. Averian suddenly holds his breathe but a voice calls out telling him that it is to late. Tadashi welcomes Shinji and thanks him for his perfect timing. Shinji notes he hates getting involved in fights like this, further stating that Kenji is a pain in the ass. He then welcomes Averian to the "Inverted World".

March of the Visored[]

Unperturbed by this interruption Averian claims that it does not matter how many join the battle, as they are all inferior to him. He further states that "one of Kagura's failures" won't stop him. Shinji, arching an eyebrow, asks Averian what he knows about Aizen's one-time partner. Averian refuses to talk and instead moves to Shinji's back, though his sword-arm is stopped by a long golden whip. Rose soon emerges, suggesting that Averian look up, which he does. Love Aikawa crashes down atop the Arrancar with his Shikai, producing a massive fiery explosion. Shinji momentarily Hollowfies and states that he will show Averian how much their "failed powers" have progressed, before launching a crimson-coloured Cero from his closed fist. When Averian emerges, bloodied and enraged, Love and Rose both engage him, with Love claiming that its fun to play the "superhero".

Shin, meanwhile, whispers to Tadashi that their old comrades have become frightening, though Tadashi merely furrows his forehead. Kensei approaches the duo however and claims that he, at least, was always frightening. Tadashi agrees before approaching Shinji. He asks where the others are, noting that their plan called for all of the Visored to be present in order to tip the balance of power in their favour. Shinji reveals that Hachigen is maintaining the barrier they are fighting in, so that the Gotei 13 cannot trace them. This visibly annoys Shin who responds that they have no intention of turning them in. Shinji, uncaring, continues by saying that Lisa, Hiyori and Mashiro are ensuring that Kenji is secured and Kazuma receives medical treatment. Tadashi reiterates that this was not part of the plan and that Anika was supposed to secure Kenji. Kensei, growing cross, reminds Tadashi that they do not answer to him or Anika, before acknowledging Kenji as their ally. Shinji follows up by saying that this is the only reason they need to alter the plan. He then suggests that they stop bickering and return their attention to Averian.

In this moment Love is launched through the air and into the side of a building, which topples to the floor below, drawing Shinji's attention. Rose worriedly calls out his comrades name only for Averian to capitalise and cut him deeply across the back. The Arrancar scornfully admonishes Rose for allowing his concern to distract him. Before he can finish the fallen Visored off however Shinji, Tadashi, Shin and Kensei flash-step in-front of their comrade, with Shin remarking that he cannot sit idly by and allow Averian to destroy a city bit-by-bit. He claims they'll just have to stop dodging and finish this quickly.

Kenji, meanwhile, is slapped across the face by one of Hiyori's sandals, who proceeds to call him a baldy and a dummy. Kenji launches into a tirade of his own, referring to Hiyori as a "snaggle-toothed bitch", only to once more receive a slap from her sandal, which launches him into the floor. Lisa approaches Kenji, who is still shouting insults at Hiyori, and notes that he is in a surprisingly good state considering his opposition. Becoming serious Kenji asks Lisa to look after Kazuma for him. As he stands up he is struck hard in the stomach by Mashiro, who remarks that Kensei would yell at her if she allowed him to return to the fight. Kenji curses her as he falls to his knees. Lisa meanwhile hauls Kenji to his feet and reminds him that he gave just about everything he had and still failed to kill Averian. She further suggests that he leave things to Shinji and the others for now. They are, however, shocked when not only Love's spiritual power dips, but Rose's as well. Kenji asks if they are going to stand by and do nothing, while imploring Kyoaku internally to help him. Kyoaku agrees and Kenji, rising, binds the surprised Visored with Kidō. He apologises to them before vanishing on a flow of reishi.

Kenji, joined by Kusaka and Kensei, run an unsanctioned patrol through the outer districts of Rukongai, with Kusaka noting that Kenji doesn't like pissing off the Gotei 13. Kenji remarks that Kusaka loves reading his mind, with Kensei telling them to cut the chatter. Kusaka, muttering, remarks Kensei thinks he founded the Order, though Kenji claims that Kensei is correct, noting they've got trouble. The trio sense a Hollowfied presence and Kenji runs ahead, finding a young boy undergoing advanced Hollowfication. Kensei states that he is going to put the boy down but Kenji intervenes and binds the child using various Kidō spells. Kusaka asks him if he is sure about this, inferring the Central 46 will find out eventually, leading Kenji to note that they've already exiled him. He claims they can't do anything more to him at this point and utilizes forbidden Kidō to transport himself and the child back to his laboratory in Horiwari, where Kenji successfully treats his Hollowfication. In the wake of this Kenji, seized by a niggling instinct, runs a DNA test on the child. He discovers, to his immediate shock, that the child before him is his son, born of the union between himself and Eri Kurosaki. Kenji wakes the child and informs him of the news, further stating that he will look after the child. When the child reveals he has no name Kenji subsequently names him Shinrei Hiroshi.

Sanadavskenji

Kenji, flanked by his son Shinrei, is asked by the latter if he is sure about this course of action. Kenji responds in the positive, whilst noting that Shinrei finally realizes why he has come here. As the sounds of battle become known to the duo Shinrei remarks that he has his father's back, which Kenji acknowledges. Sanada Shirono corners a number of Shiki Shirono's allies and proceeds to engage them in battle, with the intent to question them regarding Shiki's whereabouts. However the group are bound by various Kidō spells as Kenji appears. He demands Sanada fight him but the latter refuses, claiming he owes Kenji nothing, even when Kenji reveals the existence of Averian. Kenji stated that he would help Sanada if only Sanada trusted in him, claiming he would return that trust ten-fold, which leads Sanada to accept Kenji's offer. The two proceed to engage one another in a contest of Zanjutsu as a test of their claims. Their first skirmish resulted in victory for Kenji when he implemented various applications of the Wan'nesu into his sequences, disarming Sanada and holding his Zanpakutō to the latter's throat. Sanada, reclaiming his blade, asks to try again. Sanada wins the second skirmish by utilizing a riposte, shocking Kenji with the rate he adapted, leaving Kenji staring down the point of the latter's Zanpakutō. The third and final skirmish resulted in a stalemate; Kenji had his blade pointed at Sanada's throat, whilst the latter had stopped short of puncturing Kenji's ribcage. Sanada agreed to join Kenji in his mission and Shinrei observed the two joining forces to slaughter Shiki's associates. Kenji remarks that should Sanada fall he will avenge the Shirono clan with Sanada remarking that, should Kenji fall in battle against Averian, he will do his best to stop him in his stead. Shinrei, observing, internally notes that an unbreakable bond had just been forged. Shinrei was subsequently sick after seeing the sheer brutality with which Kenji and Sanada slaughtered their opponents.

Kaimenandkenji

Kaimen agrees to join Kenji.

Main article -- Test of Resolve.

Shinrei, alongside Naibu Shizuka, tells the latter to hurry up and move on. Naibu correctly deduces that the sight of the district has caused Shinrei to recall his abandonment, which Shinrei denies. He asks Naibu to drop the subject but Naibu states that should Shinrei ever need to talk then his door is always open.

Elsewhere, Kenji and Kusaka, on the same mission as Shinrei and Naibu, begin arguing. Kenji tells Kusaka to fuck off but Kusaka then saves Kenji by pushing him out of harms way, leading the two friends to attack their mysterious attacker together. Kusaka claims that the man made a very bad move and fires a Reīssen at him point-blank, noting that if he wants to kill Kenji then he needs to get past him first.

Meanwhile Shinrei, sensing the disturbance brought forth by the mysterious attackers spiritual power, rushes to his father's aid followed by Naibu.

Kusaka continues the battle with the man now known as Kaimen Kazuki, though Kenji eventually grows annoyed by standing on the sidelines. He proceeds to enter the fray and unleashes his Bankai, whilst explaining his intentions to Kaimen. Kaimen reveals he knows why they are here and tells the duo that he wished to test their resolve, further stating that he finds it sorely lacking. Kenji proceeds to attack using his full power.

As Shinrei and Naibu arrive they see Kenji's defeat and bear witness to Kaimen declaring that Kenji was a demon in battle and that he would gladly help him destroy Averian.
