Nezumi Hanabi Yamamoto (山本花火ねずみ, Yamamoto Hanabi Nezumi) is a former high-profile criminal of Soul Society, prominent member of the Circle of Nezumi and the aunt of the late Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto. She was active during the era before the establishment of the Gotei 13. While she encouraged her nephew in his founding of the organisation at first, seeing it as a way to chip away at the power of the Noble Houses, she became disillusioned when it turned out that the Gotei 13 didn't seek to challenge the might of the Noble Houses at all and even forged an alliance with them.

Nezumi and the eponymous Circle distanced themselves from the Gotei and began running counteroperations. Though they were focused on spreading propaganda and protest through non-violent means at first, they eventually turned to violent methods and decided to take out the Captain-Commander himself. Nezumi determined that she should do it, not only because it was her family, but also because she had the most chance of standing up to Yamamoto.

Nezumi failed in her attempt and was sentenced for 2000 years in the Central Great Underground Prison. For some reason, either because her nephew showed mercy or he could make use of her talents, she was granted her freedom after only 700. Nezumi returned to the Rukongai where her home became a popular meeting spot for rebellious Souls, including the members of the Heiminjūtai.

History[]

Alongside Ichibē Hyōsube, the ancestors of the five Noble Houses and the Soul King, Nezumi was born during the primordial and chaotic stage of the world. When the Five Ancestors used the Soul King to split the three worlds and create life and death, she protested against it and was banished by Ichibē from the Soul King Palace. Though she was no particularly fond of the Soul King, she saw the move as only motivated by the Ancestors' greed and lust for power. Her concern was with the suffering of the common people and the eternal torture of Souls within the cycle of reincarnation.

Nezumi saw the great potential in her nephew and wanted to influence him to become a great and compassionate protector of Soul Society. She feared the accumulation of power by the Noble Houses, how they consolidated power by forming the Central 46 as the sole judicial organ of Soul Society and how they were strattifying the Rukongai districts for their own benefit. Knowing first-hand to what length the Noble Houses were willing to go to in order to protect their status quo, she urged Genryūsai to seek out a new future of Soul Society that would be in service of the uncountable Souls passing through the three worlds.

She believed that the rampant violence during this time period was not just a consequence of the chaotic age but that it was secretly encouraged by the Noble Houses so they could justify increasing their own power on society. Even with all this, she didn't dare to act directly against the Noble Houses on her own, fearing the wrath of Ichibē Hyōsube who had sworn to protect their interests.

When Genryūsai set out to form the Gotei 13 and the Shin'ō Academy, she was initially supportive, believing that this would finally be the opportunity to challenge the Noble Houses. However, in order for these institutions to be allowed Genryūsai had to concede that the Gotei would hold no power to act against a noble family. Eventually the Shin'ō Academy fell under the influence of the Noble Houses as well.

Nezumi lost all faith in Genryūsai and began to see him as nothing but a puppet to the Noble Houses, willful or not. In addition, the brutal nature of the Gotei's first generation did not translate in furthering the well-being of the Rukongai residents as she had hoped. No longer believing that the system could be changed from within, she abandoned the Seireitei and moved to the Rukongai to look for allies in her beliefs.
