Emi Tenka (天下 恵美, Tenka Emi) is a human born with the power of Fullbring who resides in Osaka. Having seemingly lost her memories, she lives with her adopted sister, Omi Tenka while studying to be an engineer. She works part-time as a florist in the Yamahana Ikebana shop.

Appearance[]

Emi is a young woman of average stature and roughly muscular figure with a complexion that could be described as sun soaked; a deep and prominent tan. She has fiery red hair which is long and messy, flowing outwards, it hangs down either side of her face with a large part of it obscuring the right side of her face from view with a lighter portion hanging out over her cheek on the left. It is tied into a messy ponytail at the back using a golden tube-like decoration, the ponytail is raised upward only to fall a great way down her back. She has sharp, angular eyes with prominent lashes and a pair of short eyebrows that are only half as wide as her eyes. Her nose is relatively small though the bridge is lined with freckles that spread out to both of her cheeks. Her lips are fairly small with a raised tubercle and a slight overbite. Her lips are craggy and torn from excessive biting though its hidden somewhat by a layer of applied gloss. She wears a black plain t-shirt coupled with a black and red striped hooded jacket with long sleeves. On her hands rest a pair of fingerless black leather gloves and a silver bangle sits on the wrist of her right arm. She covers her legs with a pair of camouflage-styled trousers in various black and grey tones and topped off with a pair of black sneakers to cover her feet.

She likes wearing other forms of loose fitting clothing from time-to-time.

Personality[]

A caustic firebrand, Emi has as many rough edges as she does stripes on her jacket. With a knack for ignoring social graces and a mouth that could make a saint blush, the young redhead is prompt to speak her mind, caring little for who she might offend in the process. Brutally honest and blunt to a fault, it is very rare for Emi to tell a lie, in fact, she quite values truth and honesty in people and prefers this open ideal to the reserved nature that is prominent around her. While completely capable, she prefers not to be dishonest, unless its a matter of serious importance, even going so far as to admit guilt in the face of a crime should she need to. Not to be entirely stand-offish, despite her usually wearing some sort of scowl, Emi can be quite amiable, so long as you don't immediately irritate her. Depending on her mood or intent she is easygoing enough that she can tone down her bluntness if she feels the need, though she instinctively becomes more cold and dismissive when she tries to cover for people; intentionally pushing them away for their benefit (in her mind).[1][2]

Due to her red mane of hair and rough outlook, Emi is often considered to be a yankī (ヤンキー), and to others' credit, she doesn't do much to dissuade the assumption. Frighteningly strong and very self-aware of that fact, Emi is all too happy to pick and get into fights with just about anyone, should the opportunity present itself.[3] While she is not innately antagonistic, she is easily provoked, and likewise, prone to being provocative herself, which compounds the issue, leading to a great deal of friction between her and other hot headed individuals, even if her intent isn't to start a fight. Proud of her skill in hand-to-hand combat, taught to her by her sister, she is almost ecstatic when she gets to show it off, becoming very loud and eager in a fight, this is only furthered in drawn out battles and those fights that require use of her Fullbring, All in the Wrist. Her pride in her fighting ability is only belied by her temerity and stubbornness. Supremely confident in herself and utterly unwilling to back down, she will very rarely ever leave a fight unless she is well and truly beaten. She has very little scruples, and while she is generally harmless, committing petty crime isn't above her if she feels like its worth it. While she doesn't do so often, she has shown herself to be a capable lockpick. These traits, especially her talent for fighting, have given her a small fanbase among the delinquent groups of Ikeda, some even following her around trying to make her their sukeban (助番, delinquent girl; "girl gang leader"). She has a very passive nature when it comes to fighting, while she can be aggressive, she doesn't tend to view a fight as a negative, and is often more positive with those she's fought in the past, as if it was merely some form of ice breaker for her. She rarely holds grudges as a result.

Having been able to see and interact with spirits for as long as she can remember, Emi was taught by Omi to treat them with kindness and respect, for it was the only way to treat them as human. Having taken those lessons to heart, Emi does her best to be good to those lost souls that she happens to encounter. While she'll rarely let them send her on wild goose chases, she is more than happy to accept easily doable tasks and has more than once spent hours letting a spirit ramble on when all they needed was a shoulder and listening ear. Among people, she rarely courts people to her good side, or theirs for that matter, and holds only a very small number of people in high regard. Her elder sister Omi is the most immediate, of course, and no one holds a candle to how much admiration she has for her sibling. With unconditional love and a burning desire to find her after her disappearance, she happily dropped just about everything in her life to try looking for her. Second to Omi is the elderly shopkeep Michiyo Yamahana, Emi's current employer. The pair share a mutual relationship of barbed jabs and teasing, but they appear to have earned a fond understanding of one another in the process. She has a begrudging respect for Tetsuo Momohara, both as wielders of lightning-type Fullbrings, and for his general skills. She has much less care for Kōhaku Morimoto, finding him grating. While she doesn't tend to use much in the way of honorifics, she does refer to Kōhaku by the less than stellar suffix "-shippo" (尻尾, shithead).

Having suffered amnesia, Emi often ponders what she was like before then, almost certain that she was completely different. She seems to realise nothing about her past and despite the years she's spent in Osaka, nothing has been able to jog her memory in any sense. This has led her to believe that she was originally from elsewhere. Despite her lacking memory, she is a highly skilled mechanic, to an almost instinctual degree, and both her and her sister agree that its likely to be something from before she lost her memories. She easily got into Osaka University's engineering programme, and has taken on her fair share of odd jobs in repairing a variety of vehicles at a local mechanics shop. She has even worked on Tetsuo's customised Yamaha motorcycle. Aside from maintaining vehicles, she is quite an adept driver herself, particularly when it comes to scooters, as her employer can attest. She enjoys rainy days and long showers, and she is particular towards spicy food, going so far as to teach herself to make, in her words, "a mean curry". On free days she can be found playing baseball, or partaking in wrestling, even following professional matches whenever she can catch them. She is quite knowledgeable on flower culture, thanks to Michiyo.

History[]

An amnesiac, much of Emi's past is currently unknown to even herself. The first thing she can remember is the sound of lightning and fire within a bottomless dark.

On a rainy day, 7 years ago, amidst a heavy storm, Emi awoke in the arms of Omi Tenka, on the outskirts of Ikeda. With her memories apparently missing, Omi took her in, and when her memories failed to resurface even months after their meeting, Omi decided to adopt the young teenager.

Integrated into a new life in Ikeda, Emi lived the past few years of her life with her sister in relative comfort. During her time at Ikeda High, she earned a reputation of being a bit of a delinquent, in stark contrast to Omi, who was seen as an angel among their local community. Getting into fights wasn't uncommon, whether she wanted them or not, and she eventually dug into this reputation, making it her own. She had no small amount of enemies, and fans, as a teenager, but this was never at the forefront of her mind.

Roughly four years after meeting Omi, Emi was part of a small group scoping out the old Ikeda High school grounds, looking for ghosts. Though Emi had been able to see spirits for as long as she could remember, she kept this a secret, though what they found at the school wasn't rumours; it was a jibakurei that was just about to become a Hollow. As the only one who could even see the horrible creature, Emi took charge of making sure the other kids escaped, though they were much confused until they were being attacked by mysterious forces that caused invisible injuries and miraculously destroyed parts of the school.

Having seen her friends to relative safety, Emi ended up trapped with the Hollow, and just as she thought she had reached the end of her rope, her powers awoke. A harmless, futile punch turned into a resounding explosion that annihilated the hollow in front of her, completely shattering its mask, and ushering in its death in the process.

Getting home that day covered in injuries, it wasn't hard for Omi to piece things together, especially when she revealed to her younger sister that she possessed similar powers. She explained that they were both Fullbringers, that they both possessed spiritual power and it was this very fact that allowed her to find Emi that fateful day. She had kept this knowledge secret until such time as Emi was ready, though she admits that a Hollow attack isn't what she expected to open her eyes.

From that day forward, Omi took it upon herself to train Emi to control her new power, leading to the manifestation of her Fullbring, All in the Wrist. During this training, the sisters were also introduced to Sima, a Hollow that seemed to manifest from Emi's very own shadows. Though Omi could handily dispatch the creature, it would just return later, unable to be killed.

Plot[]

Bleach: Call of the Fullbringer[]

Emi is referred to as Fiona Archer here, a previous iteration of her character.

In the Senkaimon courtyard, Arthur Callaghan asks Fiona how things are going, only for her to playfully rebuff him. They joke about his inability to sense the spiritual energies of others, before she divulges information regarding a variety of fights in the Seireitei, as members of Xodus face off against the Gotei 13.

Sensing their targets nearby, Fiona tells Arthur, who asks her to go and fetch them. Using her Fullbringer abilities, she obliges, disappearing just as captain Iwao Fujioka makes his presence known, resulting in a fight between him and Arthur.

During their battle, Fiona returns, calling forth her Fullbring All in the Wrist, which she uses to usher in a powerful explosion rippling across the earth, that sends Iwao flying, incapacitating the Shinigami. As the armament disappears, she mocks Arthur for struggling with him, who simply remarks that he was "surprisingly spry".

Arthur points out Fiona's charges, Masato Fujiwara and Kumiko Fujimoto, asking if they're the correct individuals. Fiona gives him an emphatic "duh", asking who else would they be.

Complaining, Arthur asks her to call the rest of their team back, which Fiona does with another use of All in the Wrist, firing a blast of energy into the air, that explodes like a beacon.[4]

As the group gathers together, attempting to assuage the worries of the two young Fullbringers, Eva Kelly points out that Fiona's blast is likely to alert the Shinigami to their location, and that they should leave quickly.

Ewan Dineen states that it has already been taken care of, as the Senkaimon is shown to have been wrenched open by a sea of hair, directly from Ewen's own locks. Masato asks if they'll be chased by the Kōtotsu only for Fiona to reply that they have that covered too.

Not a moment later, the amassed Fullbringers pull on the soul of the air, and with a united manifestation of Bringer Light, they leap through the spiritual gateway, into the Dangai.[5]

Back in the Human World, on the outskirts of Karakura Town, as the group discuss their exploits, Fiona complains about not getting to fight.[6]

Fiona is out on a delivery for her job, working for "Yamata Deliveries". As she leaves from her latest delivery, she crosses paths with Masato, only to pull down her hat in order to obscure her face. The young Fullbringer fails to notice her as she enters a nearby truck, driving off with a coworker.[7]

Bleach: Extinction[]

In the middle of a meeting at the Morimoto plaza in Ikeda, Kōhaku Morimoto is pulled away by someone arriving to see him.

Emi chides him for referring to her as "-chan", threatening to break his neck. Kōhaku responds nervously, using "-kun" instead, before inquiring why Emi wanted to meet him. Emi explains that she had brought a package, containing an item Kōhaku was looking for, on orders from Michiyo Yamahana, her employer.

Casually she threw the package, and realising whatever was inside would likely smash on contact with the nearby table, Kōhaku stretches out to catch it, pulling on the item's soul in order to pull it into his grasp. The item is revealed to be an arrangement of lily-of-the-valley, contained in a glass case as the flowers are poisonous.

Emi waves off the beaming business man, jokingly referring to the flowers as a peace lily. Kōhaku corrects her, but she simply shrugs as she leaves.

Not long after, as a serious of spiritual presences make themselves known in the city, Tetsuo Momohara phones Kōhaku, and they both remark upon each other being able to sense them. Tetsuo tells Kōhaku to have Michiyo and Emi meet them at HQ before hanging up. Kōhaku relays the call to Emi, who doesn't respond before hanging up, though he's confident, if in need of reassurance, that she'll fulfill the order.[8]

Having been summoned along with the other members of Xstence, Emi arrives onto the battlefield only to coincidentally catch a falling Kōhaku in her arms, amidst a Fullbring-assisted leap in the air. Briefly they fall together, before Emi rights herself in the air. She is clearly ready to fight, her arm and leg clad in All in the Wrist, and a massive sword, longer than she is tall, strapped to her back.

A delirious Kōhaku remarks that Tetsuo's boobs are oddly soft, pretending to confuse Emi for their fellow teammate. Emi flatly replies that she's going to drop him, immediately letting go, causing the poor man to plummet to the earth once again.

Michiyo warns her to be more careful, having witnessed the ordeals Kōhaku had been through that day. Emi responds with a huff, saying that he was trying to cop a feel as justification for dropping him. Noting that Michiyo had mispronounced her name, Emi corrects her, warning her not to go senile.[9]

Bleach: Harbinger[]

Michiyo Yamahana arrives in a deserted street with the power of her Fullbring, World we Belong, looking for Emi. Assuming her to be asleep at this time of night, she approaches her apartment while considering a message they had both likely received from Tetsuo Momohara, and several spiritual powers headed towards the city. With another application of Fullbring, she floats up to the redhead's window, tapping the glass in hopes that she'll respond. Michiyo expresses some irritation as she waits.

Elsewhere in the city, Emi appears suddenly to rescue Kōhaku Morimoto as he is beset by a strange rhino-like creature. With her Fullbring, All in the Wrist, she collides with the lumbering beast during its charge, and manages to knock it off course, sending it careening into a nearby wall.

As the two Fullbringers prepare to fight, the rhino fades away, leaving Emi disappointed as she expresses her desire to fight a rhino. Ignoring Kōhaku, Emi remarks that their boss is looking for them.

As a worried Kōhaku wonders whether Tetsuo might know more, Emi rebukes him, declaring that all they need to know is that "you punch them, and they die".

Back at her apartment, Michiyo rifles through Emi's belongings, bemused by the state of her home. Sensing Kōhaku readying for battle, and supposing Emi might be with him, the elderly Fullbringer uses her powers to move to his location, where she finds exactly what she was looking for.

Interrogating the pair as to their intentions, Emi proudly responds before Kōhaku intercedes with an explanation that she saved his life.[3]

As Tetsuo asks if anyone had seen Michiyo, she miraculously appears, with Kōhaku and Emi in tow, brought to the middle of the meeting in Xstence's headquarters, a classroom. Emi perches herself on a desk as the others discuss their findings and settle on a set of patrols, fanning out in the four directions.

Emi elects to go West, fanning off any potential teammates before she leaves.[1]

Ten minutes away from the old high school building, Emi finds herself perplexed. Excited to fight the mysterious creatures, but likewise perturbed by the threat they posed to regular humans, she can't decide whether she should be happy or annoyed.

Meandering into a nearby "M" convenience store, she picks up some taiyaki, and with no immediate direction, elects to remain in the store keeping the late shift clerk company, if he gives her the treat for free. Remarking that he shouldn't, the man relents, glad to not be alone in the dead of night.

One of the creatures makes itself present at the store, and a fight ensues. Unleashing her reiatsu, Emi knocks out the clerk, and amasses her Fullbring, Second Skin to fight with. The creature reacts to her spiritual pressure, forming tentacles that lunge for her, while simultaneously trying to entrap her so that she can't escape to the sides. Instead she lunges toward its attack, only to feint at the last second by using the taiyaki stand to propel herself out its reach, landing in the next aisle.

Using Fullbring as she lands, she turns a series of soda cans into missiles, launching them at her opponent who absorbs the blow, taking no real damage, but losing its balance and collapsing in its wake. It immediately retaliates by plunging its appendages through the aisles, attempting to perforate Emi, using the rest of them to grab the aisle behind her, yanking it back in order to crush her.

While some of the tentacles managed to cut her, Emi repelled the attack in its entirety with a well timed strike of her Fullbring, slamming it into the ground, which produced a powerful shockwave, destroying and knocking away much of the store from her.[2]

Bleach: The Coven War[]

Emi is found at the end of her shift at the Yamahana Ikebana store, waving off her final customer and their fresh bouquet. Observing a text message flashing across the screen of her phone, she notes that 'today is the day'. Changing into her casual clothes, she leaves the store with a suspiciously light picnic basket in tow, heading off towards the old Ikeda high school grounds.

She arrives at the school not long after, crawling through overgrowth to find herself in front of a fence. Sighing that its typical for her to climb through trouble to end up with more, she uses Fullbring to propel herself over the fence, and through the air. Though she manipulates the ground and air with ease, her attempt to do so with a window that she is fast approaching goes awry.

She barrels right through the glass, spinning into a drop kicking motion that crashes right into Kyang-jae Maeno's back, scraping him through scattered shards as she uses him to break her fall into the busy classroom, where the pair are emphatically greeted by Kōhaku Morimoto.

Before an exasperated Tetsuo Momohara can reprimand Emi, he interrupted by Amaya Isaka, who wishes to give Kyang-jae first aid. After the pair finished bickering and Kyang-jae healed himself with his powers, Tetsuo warned Emi that she would be the one cleaning up the mess in the room. She wasn't given the chance to rebuff him as Tetsuo's mocked showmanship eventually turned into concern for Michiyo's appearance.

Emi dismissed him, remarking that she wasn't Michiyo's keeper. Though, as it turned out, she was actually within the picnic basket, and the older lady used her Fullbring to animate and disperse the apparition of wicker, to reveal herself and a young man she'd brought with her, who she would go on to introduce as Nano Santos.

Emi initially refrained from introducing herself among the gathered Fullbringers until, amidst a speech delivered by Kōhaku, she sensed the presence of a Hollow somewhere. Eagerly interrupting the speech with her introduction, she alerts the group to the presence, kicking Xstence into action.[10]

In battle with a Menos Grande, Tetsuo calls Emi's name as the gargantuan creature unleashes a Cero upon him and Nano. With immaculate swiftness, the red head appears, unleashing All in the Wrist and punching the oncoming beam of energy. It explodes, erased by her Fullbring, the only remnant a green glowing streak of light where the attack used to be.[11]

Bleach Renascence[]

As Ikeda falls quietly into the night, Nano Santos is partaking in solo basketball practice, only to be interrupted by Emi calling out to him from the other side of the court's fence. Wiping his face with his shirt, he approaches her. Without waiting for him to say anything, she leaps over the fence with ease, revealing she has something for him. Before giving it to him, she casually picks up his basketball, throwing it into the hoop in a single shot behind her, causing him to glare at her.

Emi hands Nano his pager, previously damaged in a Hollow attack. As the boy pocketed it, Emi slugs him on the arm, chiding his silence and lack of thanks.

Nano finally gives thanks, with a shrug, as he meanders off to his ball. Emi absently ponders something she was asked to tell him, but can't remember what. Nano surmises it was something to do with his Fullbring training as he manages to make a bank shot into the net. Emi tells him to have fun, with a wave, gesturing to leave.

But before she could do so, a tremendous tremor rips through the air. The sheer strength of an unnatural spiritual pressure knocks the breath out of Nano, followed by the opening of something resembling a Garganta. A multitude of colours emerge from the strange hole followed by alien limbs that reach out to touch the earth. Emi calls out, confused by what she's seeing. A ring of dark energy suffuses through the sky, and a roar reverberates through the sky, rocketing both Fullbringers across the basketball court.

Emi exclaims her confusion a second time, before grabbing Nano by the hand, using her powers to take them both into the air. Moving through the sky, they head towards the mountains where this strange occurrence began, only to be stopped at Nano's urging. From the rooftop of a house, Emi snaps at Nano, as he points out that before them stood a smoking crater where the local nuclear plant once stood.

Emi mutters a shallow expletive, realising the danger. Though she doesn't back down, as if challenging the possibility of a nuclear disaster to a fight.

The two witness the manifestation of Michiyo Yamahana's Fullbring, World we Belong, as the Fullbringer attempts to put a barrier over the blast zone. Taking that as all the sign she needed, Emi and Nano take off to meet up with Michiyo, finding her on a nearby plateau.

The elderly Fullbringer interrogates them as to why they're here, and Emi shrugs back, relaying that they'd seen the explosion themselves. Michiyo warns them that its too dangerous, eyeing a black rift now forming in the crater below.

A rescue helicopter arrives on the scene, only to be caught and plucked out of the sky by a writhing ominous mass from the crater, exploding not long after reaching that decrepit void.

With a grim expression, Emi points out that this new threat is about as dangerous as anything else they've had to face. She manifests All in the Wrist, prepared for whatever might happen next.

Other members of Xstence join them on the plateau while Michiyo redoubles her battle to contain the mass within the breach. A message screens across their pagers, from Tetsuo Momohara, warning them to stay away from the plant. Emi clicks her tongue with annoyance. That was way too late.

Tetsuo and Kōhaku Morimoto arrive not long after Michiyo manages to contain the smoke emanating from the crater, trapping it within a large sphere. Then, Nano disappeared...[12]

A week following the emergence of the rift, Emi as well as much of Xstence's membership have disappeared, claimed by the anomaly that had appeared from the crater.

As Tetsuo despairs over the attack, reliving a waking nightmare of his lost friend, he sees the faces of Emi and others in an ink black void. They disappear from view as he looks away, unable to face his missing charges.[13]

Powers & Abilities[]

Natural Abilities

Expert Hand-to-Hand Combatant: A fairly rough and tumble type girl, Emi is no stranger to fighting, and is very good at it. Even before becoming aware of her powers, she had earned the respect and following of several delinquents for her skill. When her sister learned of her Fullbringer potential, she gave Emi formal training, which has only made her a much more adept combatant. With a mix of street smarts and technical knowledge, she is very much a scrapper, and happily uses anything she can to her advantage. Fighting dirty is the name of the game for her. Any weakness she can find is there to be exploited. With toned muscles and heightened athleticism, Emi's punches and kicks both pack a ton of power, which is only further augmented by her Fullbring, which she even puts to use in evening the playing field against those wielding weapons. With her right arm encased in steel as it is, she is freely able to show off her ability to catch her opponent's sword in her grip, preventing them from hitting her before she delivers a powerful counter. Her fighting style bears no small resemblance to the Shinigami's Hakuda.

Great Speed & Reflexes: Even without making use of Fullbring, Emi is incredibly light on her feet, despite often making herself appear rather languid. She is very quick on the uptake, perhaps because of her heightened spiritual senses, able to react to most things immediately as they happen. Fast, agile and with great reaction time, she is further improved with an acute sense of balance, that allows her to pull off acrobatic feats with relative ease, such as flipping over the aisles of a convenience store without missing a single beat.[2]

Spiritual Awareness: Emi has possessed the capacity to see spirits with perfect clarity for as long as she can remember, and she is particularly sensitive to the presence of them. Able to keenly sense the power and quality of various spiritual beings, she can even accurately point out what direction they might be facing at a given time. She explains that she can "feel" the qualities of a soul. After training with her elder sister, this sensitivity was even further heightened, such that she can accurately gauge the density of spiritual entities and even attacks made up of Reiryoku or Reiatsu, which becomes a pivotal part of her fighting style. She is able to clearly sense other spiritual entities, even amongst large groups, as she was able to distinguish a Hollow in the distance whilst in a room surrounded with other Fullbringers, all of whom possessed Hollow Reiryoku of their own.[10] Despite her sensitivity, she is equally trained to withstand the spiritual presence of others, as the rift opened over Ikeda and its horrific Reiatsu fanned out, it had no visible effect on her whilst it knocked the wind out of Nano Santos.[12]

Immense Spiritual Power: Emi is noted to possess a great deal of spiritual energy, comparable to that of even an above average captain-level Shinigami. This makes her stand out, as, even for a Fullbringer, the amount of spiritual power she possesses is well beyond the norm for humans, making her exceedingly rare. Her Reiryoku is described as a swirling vortex, within which one can hear many disparate voices. Before learning how to control it, Emi's Reiatsu emitted itself at the level of a captain whenever she was emotionally stressed. During their training together, Omi noted that her younger sister's spiritual energy was deep enough that she would be worn out physically well before she'd even make a dent in her Reiryoku's reserves. As an active Fullbringer, she has yet to run into a Hollow that possessed greater spiritual power than her own[11], and even in the face of Lieutenant-level Shinigami she remained completely unperturbed.[9] When her spiritual energy is expressed, it takes a cerulean hue. Under certain conditions, expressing her spiritual energy causes her shadow to morph into Sima's silhouette, and gatherings of shadows appear to claw at her feet.

  • Unruly Reiatsu Control: Emi understands the basics of Reiatsu control, able to keep it from leaking out of her body, which could cause unexpected harm around her. When emitted it fluctuates wildly, expressing a variety of different strengths at random. Her control appears to be emotionally fueled, as her excitement over some fights causes it to flare up, appearing visibly as bursts of energy around her. She has enough know-how to intentionally unleash her Reiatsu as a quick burst to knock out ordinary humans.[2]
Hollow Powers & Abilities

Sima (淵 (セーマ), Sēma; Spanish for "Abyss"; Japanese for "Edge (of a boundary") is a mysterious and powerful Hollow-like entity that appears to be linked to Emi in some way. A tall creature that appears to be made entirely out of a black set of armour, with ribbed plates all across its form, giving it a rather ridged look. This armoured body much resembled Emi's Fullbring, All in the Wrist, and in fact, Sima is missing its right arm, the same one where Emi manifests her Fullbring. Its face, though lacking armour, is covered by a featureless white hollow mask. When it attempts to express itself, a seam appears, running horizontally across the lower half of the mask before opening to reveal a mouth filled with four rows of teeth. It has hair-like tendrils streaming from the back of its skull, reaching down the length of its back. An utterly hostile entity, it is drawn to signs of agitated spiritual pressure, and as such begins to appear whenever Emi is engaged in combat with another supernaturally powered being. It appears by emerging from her shadow, visibly tearing itself out of the shade as it does so. While Sima holds a particular enmity towards Emi, as a creature of pure instinct and aggressive impulse, it will attack just about anything that is in the area when it appears; with the right timing, Emi can even use him as an ally against stronger foes. However, as it is a hollow, the threat of devouring its victims and growing stronger from it is as much a threat as anything else. It isn't clear how intelligent Sima is, as its only form of communicating are screeches and growls, that said, it is immensely skilled in combat, and adapts insanely quickly to whatever it happens to be fighting. As a living creature all its own, Sima isn't strictly an ability of Emi's, but as it only manifests from her, during her battles, it is inexorably linked to her. Its name was given by Omi Tenka, when it first manifested.

Fullbring

Expert Fullbringer: Though she was born with the potential to use Fullbring, she did not awaken to that power until she was attacked by a Hollow in her late teens. With her sister to teach her how to properly understand and use this ability, Emi has since matured into a highly skilled Fullbringer. They developed a "pick-and-choose" focus for Emi, primarily developing her power on a particular handful of souls so that she could manipulate them with ease and develop a sense of finesse towards them. Two in particular stand out for Emi, the first of which is the air itself for the utility it can provide, which makes it a great asset for most any Fullbringer. By pulling on the soul of the air in just the right way, she can make it solid beneath her feet, allowing her to walk and stand in the air. She can manipulate it in such a way as to even allow herself to breathe at great altitudes, and with enough time and precision she might even be able to choke the air out of someone else. One particular trick that her sister taught her is hardening the air behind an opponent, such that when she strikes them, especially with the power of All in the Wrist, her enemy is flung into the hardened air, and bounced right back into her reach in order to continue her attack. Likewise, creating invisible walls can also prevent her opponent's from escaping, and Emi can even make the air heavier, and thus harder to wade through, as if it were a swamp. In particular with All in the Wrist, she can use the air to help her create a source of friction at just about any point in time, especially if there's nothing readily available in order to activate its ability. The second focus of her Fullbringer powers is her very own body, something Omi recommended. As a human, facing off against spiritual entities is an extremely dangerous affair, no matter how strong Emi might be. With enough practice she has learned to be able to harden her body against attacks, so as to mitigate any potential harm she might suffer by blunting the blow against her. Doing so is fairly intense as she can't just harden her skin, she has to manipulate a variety of body parts in order to ensure safety, which quickly drains her stamina, and even in doing so there is a limit to how much she can resist. However, in addition to making her body more durable, she can also make herself heavier or lighter should she need to, increasing her ability to withstand attacks that would knock her away, or making herself faster. These two particular manifestations of Fullbring aside, she is quite creative with the ability as a whole, such as using it to turn a series of soda cans into a miniature missile barrage, manipulating both the cans themselves and the fizzy drink within.[2] She can also manipulate several souls in tandem, in one instance, manipulating the elasticity of the earth, the air around her, and a nearby window all at once, though she failed to adequately coerce the soul of the window.[10]

  • High-Speed Movement: Being able to manipulate multiple souls in succession in order to achieve an effect is a sign that someone is beginning to master their powers, and this is often best expressed in using the power to move at great speeds.[14] Emi is no exception to this rule, and is highly skilled in doing so. As the area beneath her feet become aglow with Bringer Light, she manipulates the ground, the air, and anything in between in order to leap great heights and move with incredible swiftness, almost appearing to fly when in battle. In particular, she almost always manipulates two articles at once, the first one being the air, in order to lower wind resistance so that she can move faster. She is highly adept at maintaining her momentum with Fullbring, creating springs in the air so that she can seemingly bounce from place-to-place, even keeping up with the instinctive movement techniques of Arrancar. While her manifestations of Bringer Light usually appear as the typical green, when her body and speed is being augmented by Black as Thunder, these manifestations become blue instead, hinting at her increased momentum.

All in the Wrist (アッル・イーン・ザ・リスト, Arru Īn Za Risuto) is a relatively simple bracelet made of silver with little in the way of embellishment, barring a stylistic clasp set as a pair of teardrop-shaped orbs running parallel to one another. A gift from her elder sister, Emi saw it initially as a good luck charm, but as it was present for all of her training to control her power, it became ingrained with those memories and Emi's pride as a Fullbringer. By channeling that pride and connecting her soul with that found in the bracelet, she is able to transform it. The bracelet is engulfed in green light, spinning around Emi's wrist like a buzzsaw as it converts into its empowered state. Initially, it took the shape of a glove emblazoned with a spiked, black, hand guard. After training with Omi, All in the Wrist has matured to its current state. A set of pure black steel plates encapsulate Emi's right arm, a gauntlet with a segmented design, each plate fanning outward like a ribbed guard. A couter and pauldron are likewise adorned as such. Her right leg is covered by similarly designed graves and sabaton. Strangely, this armour appears to resemble the body of the Hollow, Sima. Before she disappeared, Omi remarked that in its current state, All in the Wrist had not yet fully matured. It is a Fighting-type Fullbring.

  • Strike Augmentation: Emi boasts a great deal of spiritual power for a human, and though she has some control over it, that level of power is incredibly difficult to manage without an outlet of some kind. All in the Wrist functions almost exclusively with this purpose in mind, though whether it was a conscious choice on Emi's part is unlikely. Whenever Emi clenches her fist, All in the Wrist begins siphoning off her reiryoku, incorporating it into itself over time. It is unclear just how much of Emi's power it can absorb, but the limit is clearly high, as it has never reached that point, if it has one. At the moment of a strike, as Emi's armour-clad fist, elbow, or foot, makes contact with another object, All in the Wrist unleashes all of the energy it has accumulated to that point as a powerful and explosive burst.[2] While the strength of each strike varies, on average, they tend to be shockingly powerful, easily capable of pulverising the average Hollow, and the surrounding environment.[3] With reckless abandon, Emi can tear straight through solid rock and metal. The process by which All in the Wrist draws out and releases Emi's power is typically automatic, however, with enough control, Emi can affect both sides of that process allowing her to draw out techniques and abilities by ramping up or slowing down the absorption of energy and its subsequent explosive detonation.
  • Counterstrike (カウンターストライク, Kauntāsutoraiku): By regulating how much energy All in the Wrist releases, Emi is capable of negating her opponents attacks. Having a keen sense of the spiritual energy around her, she is very skilled at judging the power and make up of her enemies moves, and by matching that energy perfectly, she is able to use her Fullbring to completely cancel those attacks out, preventing them from causing her harm. At the point of impact, she strikes the enemy attack with an identical, but opposing force, that completely obliterates both attacks as they fail to beat over each other.[11] This defense isn't without its drawbacks of course, as Emi still has to directly strike her opponent's ability to dispel it, and while her ability to gauge the strength of attacks, it is not infallible. This makes her Counterstrike a high risk; high reward maneuver.
  • Flying Heel Drop (フライング・ヒール・ドロップ, Furaingu Hīru Doroppu): Though All in the Wrist requires an opposing surface to trigger its effect, with enough knowhow Emi is able to trick her Fullbring into activating by making it think its coming into contact with something. Using her Fullbringer abilities, she manipulates the air around her to create just enough friction to activate All in the Wrist as she moves, and finely controlling its emission, she uses miniscule releases of her Fullbring to generate a great deal of momentum for herself. In particular she does so by leaping in to what can only be described as an aerial, vertical pirouette, triggering the boot of her Fullbring to unleash miniscule pulses that allow her to spin faster until she reaches her target and unleashes a fully powered heel drop into their face, to a resounding, earth shattering explosion.
  • Overhit (オーバーヒット, Ōbāhitto): By focusing more of her reiryoku into All in the Wrist, Emi can greatly concentrate her power for a much stronger, more prepared strike. In addition to empowering her following attack, this direct "charging" of her Fullbring creates a visual phenomenon as the gaps in between the segments of her gauntlet begin to emit plumes of violet reiatsu. The more she charges, the more vents express this emission, and the larger the plume as a result. Following a great charge of energy, and, applying the same principle as her Flying Heel Drop, Emi creates friction in the air behind her as she thrusts her arm back, causing her couter to trigger its effect, and using the resulting explosion to propel herself forward, manipulating the air or earth beneath her feet to allow her to jet forward with incredible speed and momentum. As she reaches her target, she unleashes a truly monstrous punch that has enough force that when used on a hollow, not only instantly shattered its mask, killing it instantly, but sent the hulking monster flying through an entire street, and into the walls of a nearby building, utterly destroying all the windows and glass as the blow reverberated throughout the area. The blow of such a strike has incredible blow back on Emi, though, almost assuredly breaking her arm in the process.
  • Helm Crush (ヘルム・クラッシュ, Herumu Kurasshu): By gripping something in her Fullbring-clad hand, and concentrating all of her accumulated power into it, Emi is capable of greatly condensing the power of All in the Wrist to transform it to a shockwave-generating strike, to an immensely lethal crushing pressure. Trapping something in her grip, she pulls all of her power to the palm of her hand, where the resulting friction causes the effect of her Fullbring to activate, essentially pulverising her victim in her grasp. It is an incredibly powerful attack that works almost like an implosion, opposite the normal effects of her attacks. As with most of her techniques, it was devised, and is highly useful, in eliminating hollows, as she can almost instantly crush their heads in the palm of her hand. The attack is especially indicative, as the gaps in her finger guards vent energy much like her Overhit technique.

Black as Thunder (ブラック・アズ・サンダー, Burakku azu Sandā) is a necklace that belongs to Emi's older sister, Omi. Until the day of her disappearance, it was always seen around her neck. Now, Emi keeps it on her person at all times she she searches for her. It is a golden necklace, made out of two bands, the lower band has a ring attached, that feeds into a sapphire and gold amulet. Emi shares a great deal of affection for her elder sister, and by tapping into that love, she is able to transform the necklace in order to empower it. With a flash of green light, it leaps out of its original form and manifests in her left hand as a tantō in the kubikiri (首切り, head cutter) style, which means the blade has the traditional curve similar to other Japanese swords, a rare trait among tantō. Sitting at 23.8 inches long, it is twice as long as the average tantō. The tsuba is ringed, with points pushing in on each of its four sides, resembling a clover in effect. It possesses a cream white hilt, and a basic steel pommel that is fitted with a pair of lacquered tassels that terminate into two metal points. The sheath is black, emblazoned with the iconography of a wolf at rest across the end of its width. Initially, the blade could not be drawn from its scabbard, as if held in place by some otherworldly force. Though Emi has since become able to draw it in the days since obtaining it, she can only do so by using All in the Wrist, and only very briefly before the blade is pulled back towards its hilt by an ethereal power. Despite her growing maturity over this Fullbring, it has yet to change form from its initial appearance. Emi also notes that its soul doesn't feel like anything else she's ever used her power on before, though she's unsure as to why. Owing to its elemental powers, it is a Natural-type Fullbring.

  • Electricity Manipulation: Perhaps due to their similar disposition, or Emi's focus on their relationship, the power of Black as Thunder, much like her elder sister's Fullbring, is possessed of the ability to manipulate electrical energy from a multitude of naturally occurring sources; most particularly from her own body. As Emi is still learning to use this Fullbring, and its power is still maturing, she remains in process of discovering just how to use its power in various ways.
  • Raibu (雷舞, Lightning Dance): Initially, the only ability Emi could bring out of Black as Thunder. Drawing on its power, she is able to fortify her nerves in a sense, greatly increasing the electrical impulses being projected throughout her body. By "processing" actions quicker, she is essentially able to increase her reaction time to be much greater than any regular human is physically capable. In addition to improving her reactions, it also increases her speed, even altering the luminescent effect of Bringer Light, as it becomes a deep blue while Raibu is active. Besides this, the effect of its power on her body isn't strictly apparent to her opponents as it is a primarily internal reaction. However, if Emi stresses her usage of this ability, it begins to make itself visible outside as sparks start to appear around her body. This is, of course, dangerous for Emi to do, as increasing the pressure on her nerves can damage, if not, outright destroy them, crippling herself in the process.
  • Ifuku Raiden (衣服雷電, Raiment of Thunder and Lightning): By combining her reiryoku with the bio-electrical processes of her body, she is capable of empowering and projecting that electrical energy outside of herself to create a defensive layer of "armour" to protect against incoming attacks. As a human, she is more susceptible to harm than a Shinigami or Quincy, especially against the corrosive nature of Hollow attacks, as such she devised this method to better protect herself as All in the Wrist is a purely offensive Fullbring. By cloaking herself in what is essentially electrified reiatsu, Emi projects a wall that won't outright negate damage inflicted against her so much as it is meant to intercept attacks and prevent them from happening altogether. As an opponent reaches in to strike at her, the lightning flowing around her lashes outward, striking at their extremities in an attempt to deaden the nerves and prevent the action from taking place. In the case of abilities thrown her way, the electrical charge lunges in much the same way, though it attempts to disrupt the gathering of spiritual energy in order to cause these attacks to disperse. Particularly concentrated, or otherwise dense, techniques make this quite difficult, though Ifuku Raiden may still greatly neuter what these attacks will ultimately accomplish when they hit their mark.
  • Raīssen (雷一閃, Flash Bolt): Using Fullbring, Emi is able to draw on the souls of electrical devices, absorbing the energy created by these electronics into the scabbard of Black as Thunder. This energy is not only maintained, but amplified by the Fullbring, increasing its power while contained within the scabbard. Emi can continuously build this energy up, which remains contained within even if she deactivates Black as Thunder, giving her the ability to build up "stock" of electricity in a sense. While the built up energy is never particularly visible while the Fullbring is active, in its inert state, the sapphire of her necklace will begin to glow after a certain amount of energy has been gathered. With enough focus, Emi can concentrate this energy along the blade of Black as Thunder, condensing it in the process. Then, as she draws the blade from its scabbard, she is able to unleash a potent blade of violet lightning that slices apart whatever is in front of her. The slash doesn't appear in the form of electricity, rather a hyper-thin blur of light as it becomes so condensed as to fully envelop the blade. The strike possesses incredible cutting power, even easily slicing through the Hierro of an Arrancar.
  • Iroaisai Tosasaku (紫色合土裂割, Violet-Tinged Earth Rending Cleaver): Ordinarily the Raīssen technique, as with most of Emi's abilities, is restricted to close range, merely constituting a slash, albeit, a powerful one. By projecting the amassed lightning in the blade outward at the moment of a slash, in combination with her usage of Fullbring, she can manipulate the lightning as a separate entity, unleashing it on her opponents as a large slashing projectile. As it leaps from the blade and into the air, the projectile rapidly begins to lose power and dissipate, making it weaker the further it has to travel. To escape this flaw, Emi can "ground" the projectile by manipulating the earth with her powers, in order to make it more conducive for the blade, this creates a visual phenomenon of bolts leaping out of the earth, continuously fueling the blade as it travels across the air, or so it would seem. Regardless, it is a prohibitive technique, requiring intense concentration from Emi to use, making it impractical more often than not.

Trivia[]

  • Her theme song as chosen by her author is "Devour the past" by KAF.
  • Emi Tenka can be translated as "Blessed Beauty, Descent from Heaven" (恵 (E, Bless); 美 (Mi, Beauty); 天 (Ten, Heaven); 下 (Ka, Down).
  • Emi originally possessed a Fullbring called Second Skin (セカンド・スキン, Sekando Sukin). Formed out of bone, clad on her left arm, it had the power to emit and control sonic reverberations, and together with All in the Wrist could allow the latter to turn its shockwave strikes into long range projectiles.
  • Emi's design is based upon the appearance of one of the author's characters in the MMORPG The Secret World.
  • Each of her Fullbrings are named after sayings or idioms; "All in the wrist" is a saying implying mastery over something, such that they can accomplish whatever they're referring to with a simple flick of their wrist. "Black as thunder" is a saying that refers to someone being in a foul mood or excessively angry, referencing the black clouds that come before a thunderstorm.
  • Before revelations changed the scope of the setting, Emi was previously known as Fiona Archer.
