"A Star shines in the shards of a friendship's broken chain.”
Cynthia Lucille Mirin (シンシア • ルシール • 美淋, Shinshia Rushiru Mirin), often called Cece (シシ, Shishi), is a classmate of Yorito Endō at Kazahana Academy in Fubuki City and a member of The Guard. She is in possession of one of Kisuke Urahara's lost Reishi Visualization Charms.
Appearance[]
Cynthia is a teen girl with fair skin, indigo eyes, and long pink hair with blunt bangs. She wears the Kazahana Academy uniform on campus, but typically wears a simple short white dress with black straps and black tights. Her Reishi Visualization Charm is worn as a choker around her neck.
Fifteen months after Aizen's defeat, Cynthia appears the same, but wears a white long-sleeved top with a gray high waisted pleated skirt and black heels.
Twelve years after Yhwach's defeat, Cynthia has her hair in a bun and wears a white knee length dress with black flats.
Personality[]
Cynthia is a serious and straight laced young lady. She is diligent in both her studies and duties. She prefers to be left alone by others, but puts on a slightly more positive persona at school just to maintain her relationship with her school friends. She would prefer to avoid having people worry about her.
She doesn't beat around the bush with her feelings, openly chastising Shuya for being annoying and voicing her honest opinion to Seiji despite him being The Guard's leader.
Cynthia has a more emotional side she prefers to keep hidden. She constantly mourns the loss of her best friend and develops romantic feelings for Yorito Endō. She cries in fear of what consequences she may face when he gets arrested and is openly overjoyed to see Yorito when he succeeds in rescuing her.
Cynthia looks up to Bia Gomasaki as a beautiful and successful grown woman that she aspires to be like. Bia's betrayal of Seiji and The Guard causes Cynthia to lose confidence in not only Bia, but herself as well.
History[]
Cynthia was born to an American teacher and Japanese office worker. Despite not being wealthy, Cynthia was still able to attend Kazahana Academy due to her mother being an English teacher there. She soon became very close friends with one of her classmates, Akina Koinaka. However, when Cynthia was twelve, Akina fell ill and became hospitalized. Cynthia visited her several times a week and they maintained as close of a friendship as before. When Cynthia was fourteen, Akina passed away from her illness and Cynthia has grieved the lose of her friend ever since. Unbeknownst to Cynthia, Akina became chained to her as a Soul and remained by her side.
Cynthia fell into a deep depression following Akina's death. She distanced herself from her other friends, stopped partaking in extracurricular activities, and locked herself in her room upon getting home.
One day when she was sixteen, her mother dragged her out of the house to do some shopping in the hopes it would lift Cynthia's spirits. While at a second hand store, Cynthia took interest in a simple choker. Her mother bought it for her and she took it home. Upon putting it on the following morning and looking at herself in the mirror, Cynthia was in shock to realize Akina was in her room with a chain connecting them. Akina was relieved to finally be able to communicate with Cynthia, but how it was suddenly possible was confusing to both of them. When Cynthia took the choker off Akina disappeared and she realized it was the choker that was somehow letting her see Akina.
From then on, Cynthia became similar to her old self. As she enjoyed the company of her friend again despite Akina being a Soul, she was more cheerful and outgoing. She got along with people again and actually smiled and laughed. However, some people around her began to notice that she seemed to talk to herself in private and so rumors spread that she was cheerful again only because he must have finally lost her sanity.
After several months, Cynthia was walking home from school and chatting with Akina when a Hollow snuck up on them and attacked Akina. Horrified at the sight, Cynthia panicked and tried to run away, but the chain connecting them prevented her from going far. She could hear Akina yelling out for her, but she was too frozen to do anything. The chain disappeared as Akina was devoured by the Hollow and it taunted her for abandoning her friend. Enraged at losing Akina a second time, Cynthia's choker turned itself in a rapier, and as the Hollow tried to attack her, she stabbed it.
With her friend avenged and Cynthia in possession of a means to fight, she chose to take it upon herself to protect other Souls in Fubuki City. She took up fencing classes and began going out late to patrol. With her parents unaware of what she was doing, they believed it was another positive change and that she had more hobbies she was partaking in.
Not long after she began her patrols, Cynthia was approached by a man who witnessed her defeat a Hollow. He introduced himself as Seiji Kanajo and showed her the glove he wore, revealing it was the same as Cynthia's choker. He invited her to join his group known as The Guard so that they could work together in defending Fubuki City. Cynthia agreed.
Plot[]
Welcome to Fubuki City Arc[]
Cynthia is among Yorito Endō's classmates during his first day at Kazahana Academy. He notes to himself that her expression seems to stern for how pretty she is, but the two ignore each other throughout the school day. After school, Cynthia and Yorito are the only ones walking a specific path to the school entrance. When Yorito senses a Hollow nearby, he warns Cynthia that she should hurry home since it's not safe right now. Assuming he meant because she's a girl intending to walk home alone, she assures him she can take care of herself and that he shouldn't assume she's weak. Yorito corrects her that there's something seriously dangerous nearby and neither of them will be able to do anything about it if they're caught up with it. Cynthia begins to grow suspicious of Yorito, wondering if he can tell there's a Hollow somewhere.
Cynthia walks home on her own, but takes a detour to patrol the area for Hollows. Sure enough, she encounters one eating a Soul. Yorito, sensing the Hollow is in the direction Cynthia headed in, arrives on the scene to witness her defeating the Hollow with her RVC. Yorito is shocked to find she has a means to defend herself and Cynthia asks if he has an RVC as well. Yorito denies so and says he just has the ability to see and sense things like that. Cynthia wonders if he would make a good ally.
A few days later, Cynthia invites Yorito to come with her to meet some people she knows who have charms just like her. Yorito hesitates, but ultimately agrees. They head to the antique store, Eden Treasures, together and Cynthia introduces Yorito to Bia Gomasaki and Anosuke Delgado, people who also have RVCs like her. Shuya Yoruhisa introduces himself and says their leader, Seiji, is out right now so Shuya is in charge.
Mother Arc[]
When Iyori calls Yorito to tell him their father is in the hospital after an accident, Cynthia is shocked that Yorito refuses to visit him. Yorito informs her that he hates his father and doesn't care if anything happens to that man. Cynthia is a bit shaken as it reminds her of when she would visit Akina in the hospital. She suggests to Yorito that he might regret it if his father dies and he doesn't take the chance to tell his father how he feels. Yorito refuses and claims he intends to let his father die never knowing who his son really is.
After the Endō siblings defeat the Hollow, Mother, together, Yorito calls Cynthia. He tells her that his father was attacked by a Hollow and didn't survive. He expresses that now that it really happened, he does regret not letting his true thoughts be known. Cynthia promises to be there for him if he wants her to be and he thanks her before hanging up. Cynthia hesitates before calling Seiji and delivering the news of Mikado Endō's death to him. He gathers The Guard together at Eden Treasures for a meeting.
With their primary target taken care of, Seiji intends to move to the next step of the plan and go public with The Guard. Despite Cynthia's reservations, she stands with everyone before the camera as Seiji announces on the city's news network that The Guard is taking over Fubuki City for everyone's own good.
The Guard Arc[]
Cynthia moves into the second floor of Eden Treasures with the rest of The Guard and shares a room with Bia. She skips school since she is now a wanted criminal. Yorito calls her during school hours questioning where she is as he wants to talk to her about the news announcement. She agrees to meet him at a secret spot nearby.
Cynthia explains to Yorito that Seiji's plan was always to take control of Fubuki City from the local government and corporations, and his father was the last obstacle in their way. She says he only intends to protect the city in a way no ordinary person could and they all have good intentions despite the look of things. Frustrated at the absurdity of what he's hearing, Yorito decides he wants nothing to do with it and cuts his ties with The Guard. Cynthia is upset, but lets Yorito leave anyway.
When Cynthia is fighting a Hollow on the city streets, she is recognized and the police arrive to detain her. Not wanting to hurt people, Cynthia is cornered and taken into custody. From the police station she considers calling Seiji, but he might not come get her since he's wanted by the police as well. Instead, Cynthia calls Yorito and begs him to do something to get her out. Yorito doesn't hesitate to help and swears he'll figure something out.
When Yorito arrives with Kūzen and the members of Squad 3, she remains silent so as to not alert the cops to anything happening. The plan is interrupted by the arrival of Shuya, Anosuke, and Bia. In all the chaos, Yorito manages to find the key to her cell and get her out. They escape together unnoticed.
Tsuneo's Decision Arc[]
With The Guard disbanded, Cynthia returns home and apologizes to her parents for the trouble she caused. She returns to school and begins working part-time at Eden Treasures to make up for Shuya no longer being there.
Yorito approaches her at school with Bia's RVC in hand, saying Kūzen took it from her back at the police station. They both decided returning it to Cynthia was the best idea. She initially considers taking it, but then recommends Yorito keep it and use it for himself. He refuses, saying he doesn't have any combat skills. Cynthia offers to teach him and takes him around the block after school is over. She teaches him a few of the basics in wielding a tantō and with her encouragement, he ultimately decides to keep training so he can be useful with it.
Shuya and Hojan Arc[]
Cynthia helps defend Yorito from Hollows as he assists Momo Hinamori in setting up a barrier to protect the people of Fubuki City from the fight against Hojan. She witnesses Izuru Kira mercy kill Shuya following Hojan's defeat. She cries and Yorito comforts her.
Hunger Arc[]
Fifteen months later, Cynthia and Yorito have begun dating and are now attending Nagano University together with Cynthia intending to become a child therapist.
Cynthia hears from Shiemi that Kūzen has apparently been acting weird, such as overeating and leaving the house at night. Yorito admits to being able to sense him leaving as well but had no intention of snooping into Kūzen's business. The girls decide to trail him the next night and stay up late to do so. Yorito suddenly joins them, but denies their assumption that he's doing so out of worry for them. They witness Kūzen leaving the house through his window, but are unable to keep up with him and can only follow his trail from a far distance. They can't confirm exactly what he's doing, but Shiemi and Yorito consistently notice Hollows that they sense suddenly disappearing. Assuming Kūzen is out killing Hollows at night, the trio aren't too worried about it and don't suspect anything is off about it aside from finding it unnecessary of Kūzen to do.
When Kūzen becomes Hollowfied and goes on a rampage, Cynthia aids in trying to stop him. She is one of the ones who believes killing him might be their only option, causing her and Yorito to argue, as Yorito doesn't want his little brother to die.
The Thousand-Year Blood War Arc[]
Echoing Jaws of Hell Arc[]
Cynthia and Yorito are now married with a young daughter they named Akina. The family is out at the park when Yorito suddenly senses something strange and advises they return home. Cynthia tries to ask him what's wrong, but they're interrupted by Yorito getting a call from Shiemi. She questions if he sensed something earlier and he says he did and that they'll be heading home now. Growing worried, Cynthia picks up Akina and begins to leave the park with Yorito.
Equipment[]
Reishi Visualization Charm: Created by Kisuke Urahara and still in a prototype stage, this device allows anyone in possession of it to become spiritually aware and be able to see Pluses, Hollows, and Soul Reapers. However, it does not allow the owner to detect spiritual pressure. Since it is still a prototype, it does not actually kill Hollows, but simply destabilizes their bodies so they are turned to pure Reishi and then reform later. Cynthia's charm takes the form of a black choker. Its weapon form is that of a rapier.
Powers & Abilities[]
Enhanced Endurance: Through sheer force of will Cynthia boasts the ability to continue standing even after incurring multiple injuries that would incapacitate a normal human.
Swordsman: Cynthia has some skill in wielding her rapier thanks to her fencing classes. She is capable of fighting effectively against weak Hollows, but she is obviously outclassed by Soul Reapers in terms of skill.

- As a regular human, Cynthia is physically weak and able to be overpowered by strong Hollows.

Quotes[]
- (About Akina) "Akina was-... She was... my best friend. She understood me in a way no one else ever has. And I understood her better than anyone. She... she had a good sense of humor. Sometimes she'd joke about being sick and it would be such a good joke that you couldn't help but laugh even though it was... kind of morbid, I guess. I think that's how she handled being in that room all day... unable to go outside. She was nice too, no matter what. She always wanted to hear what I was up to first when I visited. And I never saw her cry. We... we talked in a way that I knew the words she said to me were her way of letting those tears out, but... I never saw them in her eyes. Maybe she thought it was pointless. Crying wasn't going to change anything. It wasn't going to get her out of that room, or make her less sick. I think I feel the same way. Crying... isn't going to bring her back."
