Chinen is the current Captain of the First Division, Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13, and the father of his Lieutenant, Aoi Takishima. He first officially appears in Chapter 8 of Bleach: Kaiten (回転, Revolutions).
Appearance[]
Chinen is a tall, and muscular built man with tanned skin. His intimidating stature and golden glance strikes fear in the rest of the Captains. Chinen's hair is a dark brown, slicked back with a few strands falling between his eyes. The hair on his sides blend into a dark gray from age, and a thin beard frames his face.
Chinen wears an ordinary Shihakushō (死覇装, Garment of Dead Souls) with a Captain's haori. His Zanpakutō is not hidden, nor is it worn on his body. Instead he carries it around, acting like a cane, in broad daylight in a dark blue scabbard.

Sensō no Yari (アレス戦争の槍, Ares’ War Spear) is the name of Chinen's Zanpakutō. It is revered as a legendary sword within Soul Society,and has a sealed appearance that tells an honest tale of its wielder's massive spiritual power. It isn't worn on Chinen's body, but rather it is carried around by its master, acting like a cane. The scabbard appears to be in immaculate condition, being a brilliant navy blue in color. The hilt itself is wrapped in a bright red cloth, and a tassel of gold fabric dangles from the pommel. The cross-guard is an ordinary rectangle with the edges cut and curved inward. Etched onto it are flame like designs.
Shikai: The name of Sensō no Yari is a name that has become famous within Soul Society. Hailing as the sword of the Captain-Commander, and strongest Fire-Type sword, it is often seen as a physical symbol of justice. Released with the command, "Pierce the flames, God of War!" (戦争の神、炎を突き刺す, Honō o tsukisasu, shin no sensō), Sensō no Yari's released state takes the form of a brilliant battle spear. The shaft of the spear is a crimson red, while the blade itself is a brilliant silver. The pommel retains the golden tassel its sealed state bears. The blade is about 2ft long, and appears as a curved Chinese scimitar. Like any sword, Sensō no Yari cannot actually be wielded by anyone other than its own master. However, this is especially true as in its Shikai, the surface of Sensō no Yari's entire spear grows hot, rising to temperatures hotter then the sun itself and only Chinen's hands can withstand the heat.
