Overview

Story Premise

Over ten years have passed since the Wandenreich conflict and the subsequent rebellion perpetrated by Tokinada Tsunayashiro. The Soul Society has enjoyed an overall peaceful decade as they rebuild from their losses in the aforementioned battles. While the Gotei 13 continues their work in protecting the balance, their loss of numbers is heavily reflected in the quality of their work. Many regions in the human world once protected by the Shinigami have been abandoned and spiritually enriched zones have been prioritized in order to maintain a fragile balance restored by the sealing of Yhwach as the current Soul King. As such, under the direction of Captain-Commander Shunsui Kyōraku and inspired by the efforts of the hero, Ichigo Kurosaki, humans with spiritual awareness have been recruited to help compensate for the decline in Shinigami presence, leading to the creation of organizations which are centered in helping to cultivate their abilities in fighting Hollows. Truly, even in the face of loss, the Shinigami continue to strike in protecting the balance between the worlds. However, not everybody sees it that way.

"They have proven themselves to be incompetent. Plain and simple. Their era has come to an end."

During routine missions, in which Shinigami have been hunting Hollows, mysterious strangers appear to enter the fray and slay the Hollow before the Shinigami ever manage. This has been happening quite too often for it to simply be a coincidence. The news reaches the Gotei 13 Captains who intend to bring up the matter to the Captain-Commander. However, Kyōraku is absent at the moment; having been called to the Soul King Royal Palace. There, standing before the leader of the Royal Guard, Ichibē Hyōsube, Kyōraku and a second individual are conversing with him. This person is the current Commander-in-Chief of the Kidō Corps, who is apparently the one responsible for this meeting; having requested this audience personally. He makes the bold accusation that the Gotei 13 can no longer be trusted with the protection of the three worlds, and thus, demands that the 'Mandate of Gotei' be passed on to the Kidō Corps.

Behind the Scenes

The title of the project was inspired by the famous phrase, El Imperio donde nunca se pone el Sol, which is translated from Spanish as "The empire on which the sun never sets." This is a phrase which has been used throughout history to describe empires that were so vast that at least some portion of their territory was always within daylight.
