Bleach: Harbinger (ブリーチ・ハービンジャー, Burīchi: Hābinjā) is an arc in the fanon canon series Bleach: Extinction, Bleach: The Coven War and Bleach Renascence. It is primarily concerned with the Fullbringer organization Xstence as they react to strange spiritual phenomena in Ikeda, Osaka.
Overview[]
Xstence was formed with one goal in mind: to protect and nurture the powers of fellow Fullbringers. But when a misterious rift opens in Ikeda, several members of the organization disappear. Now, with the fate of their comrades hanging in the balance, Xstence must gather new strength and discover a way to stop their inhuman adversary before it's too late.
Xstence was formed with one goal in mind: the protection of fellow humans, from both themselves and Hollows. For this reason, members train diligently in order to master their powers, relying on each other for wisdom and guidance. They are autonomous and secretive, looking out for their own interests and shunning outsiders. Currently, their goal is to seek out Fullbringers who have received soul fragments. Although these fragments were dispersed nine years ago, the powers associated with them are just starting to emerge. It is important that the Fullbringers learn to use this newfound power effectively, although why they are intent on gathering them and training to use them in the first place remains unknown. Although Xstence seems to be unaware of the true nature of the shards and their inherent connection to Yhwach, their actions in seeking out these fragments brings them into direct conflict with a mysterious individual who is after an enigmatic dark power. Whatever the case may be, it will be up to the members of Xstence to stop this adversary... and to survive.
Summary[]
Harbinger[]
A small fishing barge is caught off guard by a strange rift that appears above the skies of Osaka Bay near Ikeda, Osaka. The rift opens, and unidentifiable creatures emerge. They tear the ship apart, sinking it and killing all on board.[4] The same night, Michiyo Tanaka is unable to sleep. She senses a spiritual presence and walks out onto her patio, where she is hit by a strange wall of pressure and witnesses the rift in the sky.[5] Elsewhere, Kōhaku Morimoto finishes up a long day of work at his company's office building in Ikeda. After stopping by the guard station for a bite to eat, he is walking along the streets of Ikeda at midnight when he notices the strange lights dancing across the sky. He senses that something has noticed his presence.[5] Other Fullbringers are spending their evenings in similar ways: Kalyn is working on her motorcycle, Ran Kobayashi is on a night jog, Juro Kageyama is completing his math homework, Amaka Yoshida is practicing a cheerleading routine, and Saki Yonaka is painting. They are all interrupted in their activities when they notice the rift open in the skies above Ikeda.[5] Tetsuo Momohara is on his way back home from the karate dojo when he senses an intense, suffocating spiritual pressure and notices the rift open in the sky above the ocean.[6] He sees the silhouettes of several figures emerge from the rift, and immediately heads to Xstence's headquarters at the abandoned school in Hōnara Town. Once there, he sends a message via pager, summoning all the members of Xstence to an emergency meeting to prepare to engage the mysterious creatures. He warns them not to engage the creatures on their own.[6] Saki, Amaka, and Juro immediately respond to Tetsuo's summons and start off towards headquarters. Meanwhile, Kōhaku prepares to defend himself against a rhinoceros-shaped rift creature. Just as it charges towards him, Emi appears and punches the creature into a wall. The creature shakes off the rubble, but instead of attacking them again, it disappears. At that moment, they receive Tetsuo's message. They are joined by Michiyo, who had first gone to Emi's apartment to make sure she had received the message. Together, the use Michiyo's Fullbring to teleport to the old school.[6] As he waits for the other members of Xstence, Tetsuo makes plans to defend their headquarters and disperse the Fullbringers throughout Ikeda.[7] Ran is the first to arrive, followed by Saki and Juro. Once Michiyo, Kōhaku, and Emi emerge, Tetsuo begins the emergency meeting.[7] He explains that the rift seems to be similar to a Garganta, but that its spiritual pressure is different. Michiyo puts forward the idea that the creatures could be Yōkai, recalling a time she and her husband had encountered a weakened specimen decades earlier. The Fullbringers decide to split up: Tetsuo and Michiyo will investigate the rift in the east, Saki will head north, accompanied by Ran, Emi will take the west sector, and Juro will go south. They are interrupted by the late arrival of Otoya Kurogane, who shows up carrying a bouquet of lilacs. Otoya volunteers to go with Saki and offers Tetsuo the flowers, who refuses his gift. Michiyo points out that the flowers can both symbolize the springtime of love and also be an omen of death. Tetsuo becomes uneasy as there were so few members present at the meeting. They all leave to engage with the rift creatures.[7] Ran and Saki arrive in the north of Ikeda and prepare to train their Fullbring as they patroll for rift creatures.[8][9] At the same time, Juro runs into two muggers in an alleyway in south Ikeda.[10] The muggers try to beat him up, but he attacks them and intimidates them before walking off. He is followed by a humanoid rift creature who appears from the shadows. Juro tries to speak to it, but the creature attacks him from the air, materializing black orbs to fire at him at the same time dark chains emerge from the ground to ensnare him. Juro defends himself and makes a counter-attack. The creature takes a direct hit, but quickly regenerates itself. Switching tactics, Juro envelops the creature with streams of shadows to eliminate it all at once. At the last instant, the creature switches places with an explosive orb of energy. Juro then sends a needle of shadows through the creature's heart, but it slips along the thread to attack him. Juro uses Fullbring to leap off the ground and fire another attack. In the west sector, Emi heads walks from the old high school until she reaches a suburban section of Hōnara.[11] She enters an "M" convenience store and tries to make conversation with the store clerk: offering to stick around and keep him company during his graveyard shift if he'll give her a taiyaki for free. At that moment, a rift creature who is puppeteering the body of a businessman it decapitated approaches the store. When it enters, Emi reacts with a burst of reiatsu that knocks the store clerk unconscious. The creature expands in size in reaction to her spiritual outburst, using flesh from the human body to create a "net" of muscle and tendons. It attempts to entangle Emi, who flips backwards over a metal shelf with the use of Fullbring. Landing behind a rack of soda, she she fires a volley of cans at the creature, turning them into exploding missiles. The cans of soda knock into the human body the creature is controlling, causing it to lose its balance on the slippery floor and fall. In rage, it forms a spear of flesh and bone and attempts to impale Emi while simultaneously reaching around Emi to pull an aisle shelf towards her and crush her. Emi deflects by using her Fullbring's gauntlet to punch the floor with enough force to send the aisle shelves backwards in all directions, one of which flies towards the monster itself.[11] |
Bleach: Extinction[]
Blood and Steel[]
Bang arrives to spar at a local fencing school in Macau.[12] Elsewhere, Kyang-jae Maeno wins a game of Mahjong at a gambling parlor, but in the process he attracts the ire of the gangster he was playing against.[13] Kyang-jae leaves the casino and is followed by the gangster's two assistants. He shakes them by slipping into a crowded restaurant, where he meets Bang. Recognizing each other as a fellow Fullbringer, they have a brief conversation before Kyang-jae leaves Bang with the tab. However, the gangsters who had been following him had been waiting for him outside. They pursue Kyang-jae across the city and manage to corner him. At last, Kyang-jae reveals the object they're after: the ring he had pickpocketed from their leader at the casino. He then leaps onto the top of a speeding train and finally escapes them.[13] As the train speeds across the sea bridge, Bang appears on the top of the train, having followed Kyang-jae since the restaurant. Bang activates his Fullbring and attacks Kyang-jae with his sword; the latter defends himself with a switchblade. Kyang-jae manages to throw Bang from the roof of the train with the use of his Fullbring, but he is caught off guard by low-hung wires above the train and is also flung off. Now on the roadway, the two face each other once more. Kyang-jae is confused, having assumed that Bang was another lackey hired by the gangster he had angered. But Bang shows that he is treating their confrontation as a sparring session to kill his boredom.[13] Kyang-jae ends their conversation by puncturing the tires of an oncoming car with two knives of blood, causing it to swerve towards Bang. Bang slows the car to a safe stop by Fullbringing the pavement into the consistency of mud. As Bang searches for Kyang-jae near the surface of the river, the latter pulls the bridge cable like a giant bow and fires bullets of blood towards Bang. Bang uses his Fullbring to evade the attack. As he continues to lunge towards Kyang-jae, Kyang-jae is at last able to envelope both of them in a net formed from the blood of his Fullbring.[13] Earlier that day, Tetsuo Momohara and Kōhaku Morimoto arrive in Macau.[14] Tetsuo accompanied Kōhaku, assuming it was a business trip, but Kōhaku quotes the businessman's version of Sun Tzu to him, revealing it had been a "test" of "friendship." The reality, however, is that Kōhaku can't gamble and so brought Tetsuo along for support. They enter the Niú Niú Zhìguài casino, and emerge several antics and a few hours later. Tetsuo managed to turn a profit thanks to the distractions Kōhaku had caused at the table games, but the latter left with nothing, having lost every yuan. Then, they detect a reiatsu signature belonging to Bang and Kyang-jae in the distance and go to investigate.[14] Back on the bridge, Bang ducks and dodges out of the way of Kyang-jae's wires.[15] He positions his sword behind Kyang-jae, intending to impale him through the back. At that moment, Tetsuo and Kōhaku appear, and Tetsuo catches Bang's sword. However, the instant he recognizes Kyang-jae, he charges the sword with electricity and kicks the pommel so that it flies towards Kyang-jae. Kyang-jae narrowly dodges by having his wires pull him back. All three men know each other from their past involvements with either Xstence or the Morimoto Conglomerate, which leaves Bang confused. Bang cuts towards Tetsuo's neck, but Kōhaku stops the attack with the bones of his Fullbring. Tetsuo then turns to question Bang about why he was attacking the other Fullbringer.[15] |
Descending Despairs[]
Members of the Coven: Arata Kogo, Megumi, and Jurō Henkō emerge in the skies above Ikeda, Osaka. They are carrying out the will of the Masked Man in search of Soul King Fragments, specifically the ones carried by Tetsuo Momohara and Kōhaku Morimoto.[16] In the meantime, Kōhaku Morimoto is going about his normal day-to-day business when he pulled away from a board meeting by the announcement that someone is there to see him.[16] He finds Emi Tenka waiting for him outside, who was sent by Michiyo Tanaka to deliver an orb shaped vase of lily-of-the-valley flowers. Elsewhere, Tetsuo Momohara is at work, searching for an electrical short at a gas plant. Tetsuo uses his Fullbring to find the exact point of the short while his colleague isn't looking. In the process, he detects powerful reiatsu signatures to the north of Ikeda. He tells his coworker he has a migraine and uses the excuse to leave. Once on the road, he calls Kōhaku and tells him to call a meeting with Michiyo and Emi at Xstence's headquarters.[16] Unbeknownst to the Xstence members, the mages from the Coven are joined by a zombified Renji Abarai and Rukia Kuchiki, whom they are using as bait to draw out the Fullbringers. To avoid interference from the Gotei 13, the mages seal Ikeda within a sensing barrier. They prepare to engage the Fullbringers in battle, and Jurō casts Kakushitsuijaku to track the movement of their targets.[16] Back at his office, Kōhaku notices the reiatsu presence of the mages the same moment he receives Tetsuo's call. He calls Emi, but receives no response. Kōhaku descends the outside of his skyscraper office building using Fullbring. He then heads towards the old school in Ikeda.[16] A few minutes later, Tetsuo arrives at Xstence headquarters, taking measures to avoid detection. He notices the two zombified Shinigami in the sky above the abandoned high school and does his best to stay out of their sight. Arata attacks him with Hainawa while the Shinigami remain on standby, preparing to strike. Megumi observes Arata while Jurō contemplates his next action. In the meantime, Kōhaku approaches Xstence's headquarters in Hōnara, sending a page to the other members of Xstence on his way to tell them to remain on standby.[16] Tetsuo diverts the Hainawa by throwing up a dust screen and using high-speed Fullbring to dodge the attack.[17] Noticing the Shinigami's lieutenant badges, he questions why they are attacking him. They demand he surrenders in response, and Tetsuo stalls, trying to buy time for Kōhaku to arrive.[17] Arata threatens to harm his friends if he doesn't comply, and the Shinigami arm their Zanpakutō with Tanma Otoshi. From this, Tetsuo is able to deduce that his true adversary is puppeteering the Shinigami, is likely close by and concealing themselves so that their presence can't be detected via reikaku. In response, he uses Fullbring to pull on the air around them to physically detect the presence of the mage, after which he seemingly retreats towards the school.[17] Tetsuo then attacks Arata by electromagnetically charging two coins to create an explosion in midair. Believing that her comrade has the situation under control, Megumi turns her attention to attacking Kōhaku instead. She threatens him by wiping out a city block of Ikeda, instantly killing all the residents in a lightning strike. Kōhaku realizes she's clearly not there to negotiate, and so responds by calmly attempting to bate her ire through witty verbal barbs. Kōhaku then attacks her, using mist as a feint to try and get past the mage to reach Tetsuo.[17] In retaliation, Megumi destroys a greater portion of Ikeda. Jurō finally takes action, attacking Kōhaku with Hainawa, who blocks the Kidō with his Fullbring's rings. Kōhaku arrives at Tetsuo's location just as the Shinigami attack him by redirecting a Sōkatsui and firing a small volley of Shakkahō. Tetsuo deflects with an electromagnetic wave of force, then appears at Kōhaku's side, complaining that the latter is late.[17] Arata attacks both of them with Hyapporanken and summons two additional zombified Shinigami lieutenants to aid him in capturing the Fullbringers.[18] Tetsuo leaps out of the way of the Hyapporanken, but Jurō aid Arata by attacking Kōhaku with Sajō Sabaku. Kōhaku is barely able to escape the Kidō prison by using the bone rings of his Fullbring, and Tetsuo creates a screen of diversion using after images from his high-speed use of Fullbring. The two of them escape to the roof of the high school. From there, Tetsuo sends out a page to the other Xstence members, switching the stand-by to a request for help. In the meantime, Arata has the zombified Rukia freeze the battlefield with Tsugi no mai: Hakuren. Megumi interferes, weakening the attack so she can display her own prowess, which allows Kōhaku to block. Megumi monologues to the two Fullbringers, which allows time for Tetsuo to electrify the ice around them. He uses the vaporized ice as a conduit to try and shock Megumi with an electric discharge.[18] In response to Tetsuo's request for aid, Michiyo, along with a few other Fullbringers, arrive at the location of the battle.[19] Michiyo uses her Fullbring to switch a few pansies she brought with her with a pocket of air within the barrier erected by Jurō. The barrier collapses, allowing the other Xstence members access to the battlegrounds. Michiyo comments on the situation, stating that they've made a mess and that the mages of Coven should wear more respectable garb to set an example for the younger generation.[19] Bang, who had been practicing his fencing at a local gym until he received the summons, follows Michiyo onto the battlefield. Jasei Saito joins them as well. Both Bang and Jasei had witnessed the aftermath of the destruction caused by Megumi earlier. The Fullbringers are all confused by the part the Shinigami had to play in the attack on Ikeda.[19] Seeing the new arrivals, Arata changes tactics to focus on extracting Kōhaku. He directs the Shinigami to use Tenran and has the zombified Rukia attack with her Shikai once more, intending to separate Kōhaku and Tetsuo.[19] At the same moment, Megumi shoots a nine-pronged lightning strike towards Tetsuo. Kōhaku disperses the Tenran with an explosion from his Fullbring, but Arata's use of Hakufuku is effective. Left in a semi-conscious state, he is trapped behind Rukia's sheet of ice. Tetsuo manages to deflect most of Megumi's lightning strike, but one of the bolts brushes across his leg. He redirects the current before it can stop his heart, then uses the ambient electricity to smash through the ice barrier and reach Kōhaku.[19] Elsewhere on the battlefield, Jurō protects his comrades with several barriers before summoning a gate to Hell, which unleashes a horde of Yōkai to attack the Fullbringers.[19] Michiyo traps the Yōkai within orbs created with the use of her Fullbring, which allows Bang an opening to attack the Yōkai's leader, Kanadzuchi. Jurō dissipates Michiyo's orbs, but Bang wounds Kanadzuchi by cutting one of his eyes with his sword.[19] Arata attempts to enclose Tetsuo and Kōhaku in a barrier to paralyze them at the same moment the zombified Renji takes a swing at them.[20] With no other option available to him, Tetsuo allows Kōhaku to drop so he can deal with the attacks. He miscalculates, losing control of the positive and negative charges in his tonfa the moment he blocks Renji's Zanpakutō. The electrical backlash throws him away from the high school, and he crash-lands near Michiyo. After a brief moment's recuperation, Michiyo uses her Fullbring to teleport Tetsuo back to Arata and Kōhaku's location. Tetsuo directs a lightning strike towards the mage, but the zombified Renji absorbs the attack. Arata has Nanao use Sentan Hakuja to reach Kōhaku's side while the other zombified lieutenants attack Michiyo and Tetsuo to divert them. He then begins the ritual to extract the Soul King fragment from Kōhaku.[20] Chitose Wasuchiru arrives from the Soul Society accompanied by Yoshitsune Kageyoshi, Glacies Fidus, Shiemi Makinami, and Yuji Akui. They were alerted to a disturbance in the area due to the destruction caused by Megumi, and dispatched to the Human World to deal with the perceived threat.[20] Detecting the presence of the Shinigami, Jurō returns the Yōkai he summoned to Hell and instead prepares to summon a more powerful ally. Yuji deals with the last of Yōkai, crushing Kanadzuchi to the point where the daemon is forced to return to Hell.[20] In the meantime, Megumi shifts her focus to Michiyo and attacks the elderly Fullbringer with a Byakurai dragon. Chitose and Shiemi intercept, the latter using Dankū while the former protects the Fullbringers with the use of his Shikai and dual-incantation Kidō.[20] Michiyo, who had been preparing herself to shield Tetsuo from Megumi's attack, is surprised by the arrival of the Shinigami. However, next to her, Tetsuo loses control of his Fullbring. Since the level of his spiritual energy has been drained, his physical energy begins to compensate by tearing off pieces of his skin. He manages to reach the base of the tower of wind Arata created and, putting everything he has left into the attack, splits the cyclone apart by threading lightning up into the column. After he collapses, Michiyo takes charge, directing the Shinigami to deal with Arata's zombified puppets. Fortunately, Tetsuo's attack is enough to wake Kōhaku from his stupor. He throws a stick of dynamite from his Fullbring at Arata, freeing himself from the mages clutches. He falls towards the ground but at the last minute is saved by Emi, who had arrived much later than any of the other Fullbringers. Dazed, he initially confuses her for Tetsuo.[20] However, Arata reveals he successfully extracted the Soul Fragment from Kōhaku, thereby completing the mages' mission.[21] They withdraw to the Coven, but not before a Togabito inadvertently appears in the Hell gate Jurō had summoned. Jurō decides to leave the Shinigami to deal with the threat and departs with his comrades.[21] In the aftermath of the battle, Michiyo prepares to face the Togabito, but is distracted by Emi, whom she reprimands for arriving late and for dropping Kōhaku out of the sky. She then turns her ire on the Shinigami, demanding why there are so many of them in Ikeda. Emi is relatively unaware of the entire situation, while Kōhaku regains consciousness and hides his pain, not wanting to sour the mood.[21] |
A World Beyond[]
A day and a half after the Coven's attack, Tetsuo (who still hasn't fully recovered from his Fullbring's imbalance), calls a meeting to order. He requests that all Xstence members, both past and current, gather at the abandoned high school in Hōnara. One of the Fullbringers who arrives is Kyang-jae Maeno, whom Michiyo immediately distrusts.[22][23] Xstence has an underground bunker under the high school thanks to the funding provided by the Morimoto Conglomerate, which functions as a shelter, home base, and training grounds for the Fullbringers. Once Xstence is gathered there, they discuss the national crisis in Amagasaki where the Coven has set up their headquarters in the human world, wiping out yet another city in the process. Assuming that the Shinigami are busy dealing with the new threat posed by the Coven, Tetsuo states that they can't rely on the Soul Society for help: they are on their own as they prepare to defend their home in Ikeda against a new attack by the Coven. Kōhaku suggests they probe into the Amagasaki castle, as he is eager for revenge after the Coven killed so many innocent bystanders. For her part, Emi feels guilty for having arrived at the battle so late, believing she could have done something more to prevent Kōhaku from becoming so injured.[23] Friendly banter continues until they are interrupted by two Quincy: Abraham Lewinsky and Eleonore Adler, who obtained Xstence pagers and access to the headquarters. They were sent on behalf of the Stunde to discuss the arrival of the Coven and its attempt to capture Kōhaku.[23] After overcoming their initial hostilities, Xstence and the Stunde recognize their common interests and discuss the possibility of an alliance.[24] Despite clearly struggling on account of his physical condition, Kōhaku handles most of the negotiations. Emi makes tea for the unexpected guests, feeling guilty every time she sees Kōhaku in pain.[24] At last, Tetsuo is convinced, realizing Quincy's offer could also provide an opportunity for revenge on the Coven. To everyone's surprise, the voice of reason is Kyang-jae, who points out that it would be folly to attack an enemy powerful enough to wipe out an entire city at their home base. Tetsuo asks him if he has another strategy in mind.[24] |
Bleach: The Coven War[]
Kōhaku Morimoto is attending a yakuza meeting at a bar in downtown Ikeda, Osaka when he receives a hard-sided case from Amaya Isaka containing old medical pagers. He leaves the meeting to drive to the abandoned Ikeda high school. Once there, he calls Tetsuo Momohara while the latter is at the gym to tell him that he's found the perfect place for Xstence. Tetsuo agrees to meet him there. After they both arrive, they enter the dilapidated school and explore the building. They agree that the school would make a perfect headquarters for the group, and Kōhaku informs Tetsuo that's he's already called all the Fullbringers in the area to gather there.[25] Amaya is the first to arrive, which stirs up old memories for Tetsuo. She is followed by Garrett Sheppard, Otoya Kurogane, Yasuke, and Ulysse Tournier. Kyang-jae Maeno is also there, although he stays outside the building, thinking it could be an ambush. As a former yakuza member, he had been invited by Kōhaku in exchange for wiping out the debt Kyang-jae owed to the Morimoto family. As he waits, Emi Tenka, who had just finished her shift at Michiyo Yamahana's flower shop, arrives by using Fullbring. She crashes into the side of the school at high speed, which sends Kyang-jae flying through the window, breaking the glass and his nose in the process. Kyang-jae uses his Fullbring to stop his injuries from bleeding, but he is more or less ignored by the other Fullbringers. Tetsuo is more preoccupied by the broken window and the fact that Michiyo is running late. At last, the elderly florist arrives with Nano Santos, the youngest Fullbringer present, in-tow. She uses her teleportation Fullbring to transport a picnic, complete with sandwiches and tea, to the old school, then encourages everyone to introduce themselves to break the ice. Tetsuo addresses the Fullbringers who are there and delivers a speech about how Xstence will become a second family to those who decide to join. Otoya is nearly moved to tears at his words. Otoya, Ulysse, Yasuke, and Garrett all agree to join Xstence. Kōhaku is about to offer to provide Xstence with much-needed funding, but he is interrupted by Emi's introduction, who is also interrupted by the nearby emergence of a Menos-level Hollow reiatsu. Before they leave to deal with the threat, Amaya gives them all the pagers Kōhaku had brought with him so they can communicate. Tetsuo quickly divides everyone into teams, but before they can leave they notice that Nano has disappeared. Now with greater urgency, they set out to track down the Hollow and Nano before the latter runs into trouble.[25] Since Nano couldn't understand what the Xstence Fullbringers had been discussing, he decided to face the Hollow on his own in order to prove his worth to Michiyo and the others. Alone, he stands in front of the unique Menos Grande that has appeared in the center of Ikeda. It fires a Cero and several Bala at him. Relying on the speed of his Fullbring, he expertly dodges but is caught by the backlash of one of the Bala's explosions and thrown off his feet.[26] Just as he is about to be crushed by the Menos' giant foot, Michiyo intervenes by placing a forcefield around him. At the same time, Tetsuo emerges to carry him away from the scene while Emi winds up for a punch that rips through the Menos' Cero and counters it. [27] Meanwhile, Yasuke charges to attack but the Menos slips behind him using Kūmon. Yasuke manages to deliver an uppercut to the Menos and redirect one of its Cero into the sky, but he is caught by the Hollow's giant hand. When the Menos fails to crush him it readies a point blank Cero, which Amaya, who had ignored Tetsuo's orders and instead gone to the front lines, intercepts at the last moment. She disperses the Cero with her Naginata and cuts into the Menos' arm so that it drops Yasuke. It responds by whipping its arms towards her.[27] Elsewhere, Michiyo prepares to teleport the Menos Grande away from the city center. To do so, she needs the help of the other Fullbringers with her, including Garrett, Ulysse, and Ide Yugoro. They sit in a circle, and Michiyo places a marble in the center. Then, they hold hands to pool the power of their Fullbring together.[28] |
Bleach Renascence[]
On the outskirts of Ikeda, Osaka, Nano Santos is practicing on an outdoor basketball court when Emi Tenka finds him to give him the pager that Tetsuo Momohara had repaired. While there, they witness something that resembles a Garganta open in the sky. Strange lights and unearthly creatures pour out from the rift. As the creatures descend, there is an earthquake and a distant explosion. Emi grabs Nano and starts off towards the direction of the explosion, but he reminds her that it came from the direction of an old nuclear power plant near Ikeda. Fortunately, Michiyo has contained the clouds of toxic smoke with her Fullbring. A chasm has opened where the power plant once stood, and a strange membrane of pulsating multi-colored energy covers the floor of the valley. A helicopter responding the the explosion is pulled into the membrane by the tentacles of an unknown creature and explodes. Michiyo tells the two younger Fullbringers to turn back, as it's too dangerous. Just then, they are joined by Tetsuo and Kōhaku Morimoto. Before anyone can react, a torrent of dark energy tears through Michiyo's barrier and envelopes the valley. In the aftermath, Nano feels strange as he stumbles towards the edge of the rift. Without warning, he disappears.[29] Elsewhere, in New York City, Ezekiel Silver dispatches a Hollow. When he arrives at the hotel where he works as the night shift manager, one his coworkers informs him that there's been an explosion in Japan and asks if his family is ok since they live there. Ezekiel assures her they're fine since they're on vacation, but afterwards he looks at news stories related to the event and sees several Hollows caught on video at the site of the explosion. Because of a premonitory dream he had earlier, Ezekiel decides to leave New York in order to investigate the incident.[30] Also in New York, Hikari Momohara, Tetsuo's younger sister, scrolls through her news feed on her phone while she waits for the subway. She sees headlines related to an explosion and several disappearances in Ikeda and is shocked to discover that Kōhaku's name is on the list of missing persons. Almost immediately, she decides to leave for Ikeda so she can be near her brother and the other Fullbringers.[31] Back in Ikeda, a week after the rift opened, all Fullbringers of Xstence have disappeared except for Tetsuo and Michiyo. Tetsuo suffers from flashbacks and nightmares after losing all his friends, especially Kōhaku. He goes back to the abandoned high school Xstence once used as their headquarters to gain a sense of closure, but to no avail. While there, Amaya Isaka finds him and tells him she went to Karakura Town and asked for advice from Kisuke Urahara. Amaya then tells him she felt that she was "called" back to Ikeda due to feeling drawn in by the rift, and that she's sure other Fullbringers feel the same way. Furthermore, Hollows are appearing in greater numbers in the aftermath of the rift, and Amaya tells Tetsuo that he needs to accept her and Michiyo's help. They decide to contact former members of Xstence who weren't in Ikeda at the time the rift opened, such as Kyang-jae Maeno, and also to investigate the source of the rift's magnetic power.[32] Meanwhile, Soren Tanikaze, after stealing some food from a local convenience store using his Fullbring, sees news of the explosion in Ikeda and decides to investigate to satisfy his curiosity. He opens a portal to effortlessly travel to Ikeda. Another Fullbringer, Ragyō Niratoge, is on her way to attend an optometry conference when she sees news of the disaster in Ikeda and instead decides to go offer her support. Also at the same time, Ezekiel lands in Japan and is welcomed by a fellow member of the hospitality industry named Otoya, who hosts him at a hotel in Kyoto. Ezekiel decides to investigate several spiritual anomalies that he senses nearby.[33] |

- A harbinger is a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another.
- Bleach: Harbinger had four iterations as a series. Its first role-play began in 2015 and its last RP ended in 2019.
- Harbinger was originally meant to be a separate fanon canon. It was later integrated into the events of Bleach: Extinction.
- In 2022, the original series creator, ShonenChicoBoy, recreated the Harbinger role-play series as a stand-alone fanfic while retaining many of the same story elements and featuring many characters who are homages to the original participants.
