Ayumi Ise (歩 伊勢) is a rogue Shinigami aligned with Hotaru Hiroshi and his followers. As such, she is supportive of his mission to secure the Ōin. She was formerly a member of the secretive Kidō Corps, but defected during an incident involving warring factions sometime prior to an assault on the 9th Division.

Appearance

Ayumi a young girl, described by Hotaru as flat-chested, lithe, with long auburn hair tied up in a ponytail, and sporting inquisitive green-coloured eyes. A short time after her defection from the Kidō Corps, she still wore the regulation shihakushō, and opted to conceal her identity with a long hooded cloak.

Personality

Ayumi is a cheerful, inquisitive, and fun-loving young woman, who works hard even when tired. This stems from her staunch loyalty to Hotaru personally, whom she appears to have feelings for. Her upbringing amongst the Ise clan, however, has led her to conclude that their stars will never align, because if she acts on her feelings, and he reciprocates, the curse of her clan will inevitably result in his death. She identifies strongly with Hotaru's ideals, working herself to the bone for him, and was one of his earliest recruits.

History

Ayumi, having grown up amongst the Ise clan, who descend from a long line of matrilineal Shinto Priests, was exposed to their culture from a very young age. Furthermore, she was extensively familiar with their rituals and rites. Under unknown circumstances, Ayumi grew disillusioned with the Soul Society, the cause being because she learned of the "Original Sin", and joined Hotaru shortly before Sakae, alongside Asuka, Airi, and Xiuying. Prior to defecting from the Soul Society, she participated in an internal conflict between feuding factions of the Kidō Corps in the lead-up to an assault on the 9th Division. Additionally, Hotaru trained Ayumi and her colleagues in the school of Kidō taught in his own world, as well as the advanced Nigendō branch.

Shiragiri

• Shiragiri (白霧, Pale Mist): As members of the Ise clan are unable to imprint their essence upon an Asauchi, Ayumi secured for herself an alternative in the form of a Bakkōtō, specifically Shiragiri. She did this through unknown means, as it had been in the possession of the Kasumiōji clan. In the past, Shiragiri had a fish-like biological component that coiled up the user's arm, and an accompanying katana blade, with an additional blade forming in the opposing hand when provided with more reiatsu. Once it came into Ayumi's possession, however, it was extensively modified by Hotaru, with him stripping out the parasitic qualities as he did with his own Inyū, with the Bakkōtō now existing as two individual katana connected at the base of the hilts by a long cord. Furthermore, Hotaru incorporated the mirror fragments of another Bakkōtō, Saiga (砕我, Ego Breaker), into Shiriagiri, which had been shattered by Ichigo Kurosaki, creating a combination of the two Bakkōtō.

Powers and Abilities

High Spiritual Energy: Ayumi's spiritual power is considered entry-level Lieutenant-class, for she is noted to be weaker than Sakae, whose power upon recruitment was said to sit in the gulf between a Lieutenant and a Captain.

Kidō Expertise: Hotaru's followers are identified both as "witches" and "mages", suggesting significant skill in the magical arts, with spells from two distinct Kidō variations: that taught in their own world, and those taught in Hotaru's world. In addition, she undertook training from Hotaru in the Nigendō branch of Kidō. As a former member of the Kidō Corps, and one who survived an internal conflict between feuding factions immediately prior to her defection, Ayumi's skills are notably high. Ayumi's use of Kidō is further individualized than most, for she can apply the various rituals and rites practised by the Ise clan to her spells, allowing for uses beyond even Hotaru's abilities.

Zanjutsu Expertise: Ayumi wields a Bakkōtō rather than a Zanpakutō, for members of the Ise clan are incapable of imprinting their essence upon an Asauchi.

Behind the scenes

• Ayumi is based on the character of the same name, who exists in the author's primary work. That version of Ayumi was a sibling-student of Kentaro Hiroshi, studying under the latter's mother, and was a member of the Satonaka Clan created by Razo.
