- "Ashido and Gundinger will stay here, though. There's something brewing here in Hueco Mundo, and it might not necessarily be the situation between the Tres Pilares and the remnants of the Wandenreich, and quite frankly that terrifies me. We killed an Adjuchas not long ago whose final words happened to scare me shitless. Want to know the name that slipped past his lips? Teki: one of Averian's many names, if I remember my father's drunken ramblings any. If Averian rears his ugly head in this world, at this exact time, Hotaru will be the least of our worries. I just hope I'm way off the mark here."

Averian (平均者), once known by the titles of "Devourer" and "Pretender", and given the name "Teki" (敵) by Baraggan Louisenbairn, meaning enemy, is an immensely powerful, old, and dangerous Arrancar. He was first alluded to in the journals of Akira Hiroshi during the latter's sixteen-year stay in the Forest of Menos. He is believed by a number of historians, amongst them the vampire Vlad and the enigmatic Archon, to be the first natural Arrancar, as well as one of the first Vasto Lorde-class Hollow alongside Baraggan. Additionally, he has power surpassing the reigning Espada and fought against the fledgling Gotei 13. In the same vein as the Espada who appeared later, Averian has an aspect of death: Greed (欲). Additionally, he has a loyal group of followers, referred to as his Fracción, who likewise command lesser Hollow. Averian is the counterpart of the same Averian who served as the primary nemesis of Akira's own father.
Appearance[]
Averian is described by Ashido and Gundinger as an alpha predator, wiry but powerful, with long white-coloured hair. He appears to prefer to dress in white-coloured clothing, with Ashido describing him as a colour-inverted Shinigami.[1] He is noted by Hotaru Hiroshi to exude an air of confidence and superiority, with an almost regal bearing.[2] He is noted to have a piercing, red-eyed gaze, which turns golden when he exerts his reiatsu.[3] Furthermore, Shiratori observed him to frequently wear a bored expression that shifts to sadistic glee whenever he partakes in battle.[4] His mask remnants consist of a thin circle around his left eye, similar to the fragments of Loly Aivirrne and Menoly Mallia, although not as large, and without obscuring the eye completely. His mask fragments are frequently hidden by his fringe, which usually falls over the left-hand side of his face.[5] Averian's Hollow hole is rarely seen, for it is completely obscured by his pants leg. Its location is on his left leg, specifically his thigh,[Notes 1] a trait he shares with former Espada member Aaroniero Arruruerie.[6]
Personality[]
- "Given that Akira told me that this guy is supposed to be a complete menace who slaughters without hesitation and kills because it's fun, I don't understand why he hasn't just attacked us already? He didn't strike me as the sort to play with his victims. I mean, he killed those Hollow and Quincy quickly and without preamble, seemingly to quench his hunger. Is that what he's doing here? Playing games with us? Or is he window-shopping before he samples the meal?"
- —Ashido speculates on Averian's intentions.[src]
Averian is a proud and solitary figure who views his opposition as little more than meals to be consumed, or prey, for him to be hunted.[7] Ashido described him as an "alpha predator", one who becomes excited when said prey surprises him or performs beyond his expectations, for he was pleasantly surprised when Gundinger's reiatsu rose sharply in preparation of a Gran Rey Cero.[5] In the same vein, he complimented Muto during their brief battle,[8] and became incensed when he sensed the reiatsu of Hotaru's father Kenji, with Hotaru even remarking that Averian looked like the foodie who'd just found the buffet table.[2] No matter how much praise he heaps on his opposition, however, Averian never views anyone but food for him to consume.[3]
His solitary nature is reinforced by substantial patience, however, which serves to curb his hunger and greed to a certain level, though it still remains a driving force.[9] Despite possessing a strong sense of greed and an almost insatiable hunger, Averian was, at first, content to direct his loyal Hollow from the shadows without revealing himself or becoming directly involved in their individual plots.[10] He did this seemingly over decades, whilst slowly building his power up to what it was prior to his sealing at the hands of the fledgling Gotei 13.[8] This period of isolation gave Averian a chance to build his forces, particularly amongst the ranks of the Adjuchas, as individuals like Clarion eventually became the Arrancar's Fracción.[3]
When he did finally step out of the shadows, however, he butchered a group of Hollow and Quincy in an attempt to sate his growing hunger with little hesitation and with lethal precision.[11] The sheer quickness of his "meal" shocked Gundinger and surprised Ashido, who both preferred to watch and wait rather than attempt to challenge Averian without aid, opting instead to retreat.[1] Shiratori, who witnessed the event first-hand and escaped courtesy of Judah Eli, compared Averian's bloodthirsty display and maniacal laughter as he slaughtered Hollow and Quincy alike to that of Kenpachi Zaraki.[4] In the past, this same brutality led to him being known as the "Devourer",[12] a title which led Judah's son Hikari to claim that it was rather on the nose.[13] He could likewise exercise restraint. When confronted with the Tres Pilares, Averian opted to cut his losses and escape, rather than continue fighting against a six-on-one handicap.[8]
Averian's meeting with Hotaru Hiroshi and his father, Kenji Hiroshi, served to throw the Arrancar into what could best be described as a frenzy. Hotaru insulted him, outright stating his belief that Averian was little more than a distraction for the pursuit of his own goals, whilst Kenji proved his superior in battle. Averian had long planned to invade the Soul Society regardless, but that desire intensified courtesy of Hotaru and Kenji.[2]
History[]
- "Gundinger didn't know what was driving the Hollow into such a frenzy (and I believe him) but he suggested that "two Shinigami who'll remain nameless should stay in their cave for a while". Whether that means what I think it means, I'm not sure -- I just hope it doesn't mean Averian. This is eerily similar to how he appeared in my own world."
- —Akira hoping that Averian wasn't behind an increase in Hollow aggression and unpredictability.[src]
According to accounts chronicled by an unnamed Reikon Kyuuban, whose journals and notes ended up in the keeping of the Elder Vlad, Averian originated in the same era as Baraggan Louisenbairn and Ikomikidomoe, the former of which became the first Vasto Lorde-level Hollow.[14] He fought with Baraggan for control of Hueco Mundo, but failed, and was subsequently named "Teki" by Baraggan, citing their relationship as enemies. This chronicle was confirmed by The Archon, who revealed that Averian was likewise referred to as the "Pretender" and "Devourer" both.[12] Additionally, Averian was familiar with Trillizos, back before he split himself into three, for he served as a member of Baraggan's court.[8]
In the same account told by Vlad and confirmed by The Archon, Averian became the first Arrancar, and challenged the fledgling Gotei 13 to quench his insatiable hunger. This was one of the earliest dangers faced by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto's organization, with the event itself occurring roughly one-thousand years prior to the events involving Sōsuke Aizen and his rebellion, around the time Yamamoto first became the Captain-Commander and failed to kill the Quincy King Yhwach.[15] Six Captains fought him, and only two survived, and for a time Averian was said to have been sealed away in what would later be known as the Forest of Menos.[16] Those Captains whom Averian fought, and killed, included high-ranking members of the nobility, and included the Kuchiki, Shiba, and Tsunayashiro families. The only survivors included Yachiru Unohana, who led the assault on Averian, and Anika Shihōin, who led the effort to seal him when it became clear they couldn't kill him.[17] Whilst the battle itself wasn't widely documented, the circumstances of Averian's sealing was known to Vlad, as was the location of his seal.[18]
The area of the Forest of Menos were Averian was ultimately sealed lay beyond what Ashido had explored, and deeper even than what Gundinger considered his own territory, the area being described as "ancient" by Ashido.[11] Unfortunately, not even Kidō lasts forever, as all things created by living creatures eventually dies.[19] The seal confining Averian continued to erode over the centuries, to the point of complete failure.[20] By his own admission, however, he spent a very long time quietly gathering his strength in the Forest, estimated to have been decades.[8] Anika's seal had siphoned a good deal of his stolen reiatsu over the long years, necessitating a long period of recuperation and recovery.[17] This wasn't restricted solely to gathering his own strength, but his number of followers as well. Individual Adjucha, such as Clarion, Gorky, and Nix, were highly loyal, but highly fearful, of Averian, even as they became known as his Fracción.[3][13]
As early as 2015, Averian was subtly directing the resident Hollow within the Forest of Menos, a fact noticed by Akira, but incorrectly attributed to the tensions between the Espada and Wandenreich.[10] After facing him briefly in battle, Muto was also of the opinion that Averian was responsible for the unrest in Hueco Mundo.[12] It wasn't until September 2018 that Averian's existence was first alluded to by Akira, however. The young Visored noted that the various shifts in power Ashido, Gundinger, and himself had witnessed since arriving in the Forest in 2003 were eerily similar to the events that led to Akira's own father learning about and fighting against Averian back in their native world.[21] Only a year later Akira was convinced that an Adjuchas he killed directly referred to Averian, using the name "Teki", with its dying breath, as he recognized the name as one his father had mentioned one night he was drunk.[22] Fortunately, this name was Averian's own title, granted to him by Baraggan, and not The Outsider, who backed Averian in Akira's own world.[16]
The remnants of the Wandenreich sensed his presence as well, long before Akira suspected anything, and sent a number of groups over the years into the Forest to investigate. These incursions contributed to the increased tensions between the Wandenreich and Espada that was witnessed by Ashido and Gundinger, with the Tres Pilares seeing it as a show of aggression.[23] One of these Wandenreich patrols ran afoul of Gundinger in May 2005, resulting in their death.[24] Another group of Soldat, alongside summoned Hollow, were killed by Averian himself in January 2019.[11] One of these Quincy happened to be Judah Eli, father of Hikari Raiotto, who discovered the sight of the massacre in the days following.[25] Judah joined the battle in an effort to save Shiratori and ensure information regarding Averian's abilities made it back to the Wandenreich.[4] Hikari, Judah's son, was the first to confront Averian after Ashido and Gundinger fled Hueco Mundo.[8]

Powers and Abilities[]
Natural powers[]
Greed (欲): Like the current and former Espada, Averian has an aspect of Death that embodies his existence. His aspect was so powerful, and so overriding, that it was able to partially overcome the effects of Muto's Zanpakutō Kachō Fūgetsu.[8] Unlike most, Averian's power ties directly into his aspect: that of Greed. He harbours a near-unending hunger that compels him.[5] The Archon revealed one of his old titles as "Devourer", further stating that he was on an eternal quest to quench his insatiable hunger.[12] In truth, his power is similar to Aaroniero Arruruerie's Glotonería, only Averian can absorb the power of seemingly any race to empower his own.[1]
- Devourer of Souls (霊食い, Reikui; Literally meaning "Soul-Food"): Hollow, after reaching the point where Human souls will no longer sustain them, evolve through cannibalizing their own kind.[26] Some, however, are much superior in this regard than their contemporaries. In addition, the atmosphere of Hueco Mundo itself also sustains particularly small Hollows, acting as an alternative to Human souls.[27] Averian can passively absorb the ambient reishi from his surroundings in the same manner as a Quincy and the aforementioned small Hollow, a skill he acquired after killing numerous Soldat,[1] though it wasn't until he killed Gengetsu that he could utilize this ability freely.[8] As hypothesized by Ashido, Averian seemingly combines the two approaches when killing via his Zanpakutō, with the side effect of leaving a victim's body shrivelled,[11] and his own revitalized.[5]
Vast Spiritual Energy: Averian was one of the first Vasto Lorde-level Hollows to exist in Hueco Mundo alongside Baraggan Louisenbairn, and thus his combat ability is beyond that of a typical Captain-class Shinigami.[28] Prior to being sealed away in the Forest of Menos, Averian fought against six Gotei 13 Captains, killing all but two of them.[16] The survivors were Yachiru Unohana and Anika Shihōin, with the group belonging to what Shunsui Kyōraku described as the strongest version of the Gotei 13 ever assembled.[29] His reiatsu has the unique psychological effect of inciting hunger in those nearby, with Gundinger describing the sensation as being similar to how he felt prior to becoming an Arrancar.[11] It left Ashido eager to gather supplies, with him citing his own growing hunger as the cause.[7] Averian's power increases slightly with every kill he makes with his Zanpakutō, and he likewise gains some measure of his victim's abilities.[1] Due to this absorption, Averian displays the traits of multiple races, including Hollow, Shinigami, Quincy, and Reikon Kyuuban.[8] Muto described Averian's reiatsu as chimeric, also stating that his presence was similar to that of The Archon himself, for his power was vast, unique, and ancient.[12] Shiratori, meanwhile, described it as preverse.[4] He has demonstrated such unfathomable power that a Captain-class Shinigami of Ikari's calibre, who himself had undergone Hollowfication, compared Averian to Shigekuni Yamamoto, Yachiru Unohana, Sakaala, Yhwach, and Sōsuke Aizen, further labelling them and Averian himself as monsters.[3] That said, Averian is far from invincible. Hotaru correctly deduced that the Gotei 13, as a collective, could end him. Furthermore, Averian finally met his match in the father of Hotaru and Akira, for Kenji Hiroshi contained him and his followers in Hueco Mundo for an entire week using only his Shikai.[2]
- Masterful reiatsu control: Averian is capable of finely honed control of his own reiatsu. He was capable of sensing Gundinger opening a Garganta and react with sufficient speed and force to collapse the portal, despite being an unspecified distance from Gundinger himself.[7] His reiatsu is golden, with his eyes reflecting this colouration when exerted in sufficient quantity.[5] When he begins to fight seriously, it is next to impossible for Averian to hide his presence, or avoid others noticing it. The Tres Pilares quickly honed in on his reiatsu signature,[8] whilst the likes of Gundinger, Hikari, and Shiratori were capable of tracking him by following the remnants of his powerful reiatsu.[13]
- Hierro: Averian's natural defences are tied directly to his immense reiryoku reserves. He was capable of tanking Gundinger's Gran Rey Cero head-on, emerging from the blast with superficial wounds and scorched clothing, to the point he was mostly unaffected by it.[5] He suffered no damage from a Blut-enhanced strike to his throat from Siegfried Adler in his Lōcuria state, weathered the various assaults of Muto, and shrugged off a Bala assault from the Trillizos brothers.[8] After killing Gengetsu, Averian was able to realize a version of Blut, with the defensive variation enhancing his already formidable Hierro to such levels only Captain-class fighters using Bankai and their equivalents can cause lasting damage to him.[3]
Scythe mastery: Averian, as a former Vasto Lorde-level Hollow, had combat abilities beyond a typical Captain-class Shinigami.[28] That said, Averian's skills lacked the refinement of a Shinigami Captain due to a combination of the lawlessness of Hueco Mundo and lack of institutions teaching such skills, though his instinctual ability to adapt allowed him to correct whatever flaws existed in his form as he fought.[3] He was capable of killing numerous Hollow and Soldat of the Wandenreich with a single strike apiece, all whilst heavily out-numbered.[11] Ashido claimed that there was absolutely no waste in Averian's movements, and that he attacked with the precision of an alpha predator,[1] to the point Shiratori remarked that turning your back to him was effectively a death sentence.[4] When fighting Trillizos he beheaded all but one of the trio in a single strike.[8]
Cero: An ability utilized mainly by Menos-class Hollows, Arrancar, and the Visored, with virtually no difference between practitioners.[30] Like Coyote Starrk, Averian fires his Cero with no fighting pose and the same charge time as Bala. Furthermore, its destructive potential is high, striking with extreme concussive force before exploding violently.[3]
- Ola Azul: Yet another of Averian's instinctually improvised attacks, originally used by Tier Harribel as both projectile,[31] and as a means of enhanced swordplay.[32] In his hands, it allows Averian to apply Cero to his Zanpakutō, greatly enhancing his basic attacks. Additionally, he can apply his Gran Rey Cero in the same manner, producing a strike capable of contending with Ikari's Bankai.[3]
- Gran Rey Cero: Although he is not an Espada, or even a former affiliate of the group, Averian is capable of using the stronger Gran Rey Cero, seemingly through instinct, in the same manner he uses advanced Sonído techniques. This particular Cero, coloured golden, spins like a razor and possesses the requisite power to disturb the very fabric of space when fired.[33] When clashing with Ikari's Shikai, Ikari noted the exchange to be far from even, and soon after unleashed his Bankai, noting he had just about managed to repulse the worst of the damage to avoid crippling injuries.[3]
Bala: Due to the speed with which he charges and fires his ordinary Cero, Averian rarely uses Bala at all. When he does, however, he has demonstrated rapid-firing capabilities, to the point he was described as a machine gun firing on full-auto.[3]
Pesquisa: A sensory technique requiring heightened awareness.[34] Averian's sense seemingly extends to an area encompassing the entirety of the Forest of Menos, as Ashido noted that Gundinger couldn't open a Garganta anywhere in the Forest without Averian swiftly collapsing it with his reiatsu.[7] It took Kidō, coupled with a flashy distraction from Gundinger, to dampen the effectiveness of Averian's Pesquisa to allow for Ashido and Gundinger to retreat.[5] Averian appears to have a very developed Pesquisa, to the point he can differentiate between species, and track incoming targets over long distances.[8] Against opponents of Muto and Ikari's calibre, Averian's Pesquisa has been shown to allow him to follow their movements even when he physically loses sight of them.[3] Additionally, he was able to pinpoint Kenji's general location when he caused a storm to sweep through Hueco Mundo and continued to do so when Kenji intensified the storm with his Shikai.[2]
Sonído Mastery: Gundinger and Ashido were equally shocked by Averian's sheer speed, with Shiratori noting his tendency to "pounce" on his opposition without warning.[4] Even with basic movements, which Ashido noted were akin to an alpha predator, Gundinger's Pesquisa could barely follow him.[1] Gundinger later claimed that his own Pesquisa was pushed to the absolute limit, simply for the latter to track Averian's movements.[5] He overwhelmed the Trillizos brothers to such a degree that he killed two of the three in one attack, with the third following shortly thereafter.[8] Furhtermore, he overwhelmed the Hollowfied Hotaru, himself a Captain-class fighter, to such an extent that it necessitated Hotaru's father intervening to save him.[2]
- Gemelos Sonído: A variant of Sonído created by Zommari Rureaux and instinctively utilized by Averian.[35][36] Gundinger identified Averian's use of the technique to create numerous after-images as being the same technique used by Zommari, something Ashido compared to the speed of the Shihōin.[1] His skill is noticeably high, to the point his created clones can attack his foes independent of Averian himself.[8] He has been shown creating clones, who number in the teens, whilst producing confusing after-images to distract his opposition in close-quarters combat.[3]
Immense Strength: Averian's attacks were capable of bypassing the defences of numerous Soldat employing Blut Vene, to the point Ashido noted the defensive strength afforded them may as well have been a silk sheen.[11] He was capable of shattering Ashido's restraining Kidō through a combination of reiatsu and muscle strength, with little actual effort.[5] Additionally, he could cut through the Hierro of a Privaron Espada with casual ease.[8] Perhaps the most notewrothy indication of his strength-level was his battle with Ikari. Averian was able to contend with the Visored, who fought most of the battle empowered by his Hollowfication, to the point Ikari delcared him a monster.[3] He could shatter the earth with a mere casual swing of his sealed Zanpakutō, quickly laying an area to waste.[2]
Hollow Control: Averian has demonstrated the ability to exert control over the various lesser Hollow who reside in the Forest of Menos. He was capable of subtle control, directing those nearby and significantly further away, to avoid threats.[10] His control also extends to the more powerful and intelligent Adjuchas-class Hollow.[22] Gundinger attributes strength as the driving factor behind the effectiveness of such control and admits that Averian's influence runs much deeper than his own, citing the difference in their reiatsu as the reason.[5] When he left the Forest he showed that his control extends to the Hollow population in general, not just those in his domain, for he could summon countless Hollow who had earlier hidden themselves beneath the sands.[8] Furthermore, it took considerable effort on Gundinger's part just to give the Menos in Averian's domain conflicting orders, indicating just how much influence he exerts.[13]
Stolen powers[]
Being in possession of a trait as potent as Devourer of Souls gives Averian an undoubtable advantage. Muto saw first-hand the flexibility Averian's repertoire of stolen abilities grants to him, for he was capable of mimicking Muto's hybrid nature in a mocking display by employing the techniques of a Hollow, Quincy, and Shinigami, simultaneously, expressed through three clones.[8]
- Stolen abilities: Averian's power increases slightly with every kill he makes with his Zanpakutō, and he likewise gains some measure of his victim's abilities.[1] Through trial-and-error, ingenuity, experimentation, and outright mimicry, Averian has managed to re-tool a number of these assimilated abilities, or merge them with his existing skills to create entirely new techniques, even using abilities usually impossible for an Arrancar to perform.[16] He can even combine certain skills to create something new.[8] If a kill takes place that results in healing, rather than empowerment, Averian gains nothing save a reprieve from his hunger.[5] Additionally, his instincts play a role in allowing him to use his stolen abilities with a high degree of skill.[3] Shortly after killing Gengetsu, for example, Averian developed the Blut technique, which usually requires training for an impure Quincy to utilize.[37]
- Lauffeuer (山火事 (やまかじ), German for "Bushfire"): a technique born of Averian's mimicry of an existing Quincy technique,[4] stolen from Quincy he personally killed and modified.[1] Following his acquisition of it, Lauffeuer became one of Averian's preferred techniques.[38] With it, Averian can generate blue flames of varying intensity to attack his opposition, and defend himself by forming the flames into dense pillars.[8] Although useless against Ikari, Averian's usage of Lauffeuer produced heat and power comparable to Ikari's Zanpakutō.[3]
- Emisión (放光 (ほうこう), Spanish for "Emission of Light"): a technique born of Averian's experimentation with the light-generating ability of Judah Eli, which Averian stole when he killed the group of Soldat commanded by the former.[11] This technique involves Averian generating a bright flash of light over a large area to momentarily blind his opposition,[25] used primarily by Averian as a means of surprise or escape.[8]
- Blut Blut (血装 (ブルート), Burūto; German for "Blood", Japanese for "Blood Guise"): an advanced Quincy technique which heightens one's offensive and defensive abilities by flowing reishi into their blood vessels, acquired by Averian when he killed numerous Soldat commanded by Judah Eli.[1] It was only after killing Gengetsu, and assimilating his innate blood control, however, that Averian was able to replicate the technique fully.[8] Just as is the case with any Quincy, Averian cannot employ both forms of Blut simultaneously.[39]
- Blut Arterie: Although he claimed that he hadn't yet adjusted to Blut, Averian's instinctual ability to mimic his opposition resulted in a remarkably fast transitional period. During his battle with Ikari, Averian was able to repulse the effects of the latter's Shikai and, eventually, his Bankai.[3]
- Blut Vene: Although he claimed that he hadn't yet adjusted to Blut, Averian's instinctual ability to mimic his opposition resulted in a remarkably fast transitional period. During his battle with Ikari, Averian not only weathered assaults from Ikari's Shikai and Bankai, but bone-shattering kicks that Averian willingly tanked, just so he could strike the man in close-quarters.[3]
- High-speed Regeneration: an ability most Arrancar abandon in favour of heightened power, and Averian was no exception.[40] His healing factor is not natural, instead being a product of his ability to steal the skills and traits of others. Rather than empower himself, Averian can instead opt to heal his injuries, should any exist.[5] Following the assimilation of Gengetsu's powers, namely his control over blood, however, Averian's healing factor became comparable to that of a Reikon Kyuuban, although fuelled by his ability to absorb ambient reishi as a Quincy would, rather than ingesting blood. As such, he no longer had to choose between empowerment or healing following a kill.[8] His newfound healing ability was quite potent, as well. He could rapidly heal injuries as small as cuts and bruises, to broken bones, to burns from Ikari's Zanpakutō, assuming he had the necessary reishi nearby to facilitate it.[3]
- Evolución: a technique which is itself a derivative of the Soul-splitting ability Averian acquired from Trillizos with aspects of a Quincy's reishi control and Gengetsu's innate blood control coming together to create something new.[8] It was an empowering technique Averian could apply to others, as was the case with his Fracción.[3] Unlike Resurrección, which returns an Arrancar to their original Hollow form and unlocks their offensive abilities,[41] Evolución merely enhances what already exists, with no additional powers being granted.[13]
- Kidō Kidō (鬼道, Demon Way): an imitation born of Averian's murder of several Shinigami. During his historic battle with the fledgling Gotei 13, Averian killed four Captains, and gained some measure of the Kuchiki and Shiba clansmen's expertise in the magical field.[17] Fortunately for his opposition, Averian has little actual working Kidō theory, knowing only that the spells require that the user visualize the concept and apply it to reality via one's reiryoku, thus making his usage of Kidō entirely based on the principles of mimicry.[42] Furthermore, Averian's Kidō would never be at full power even when compared against someone of equal strength, for he completely lacks any knowledge of their individual incantations, which reduces their potential power.[43] Thusly, he uses his Kidō with the spell name alone, with no mention of a number or incantation.[44]
- Sajō Sabaku (鎖条鎖縛, Locking Bondage Stripes): Bakudō #63. Ashido used this binding spell against Averian during his and Gundinger's brief battle with Averian.[5]
Zanpakutō[]
Voraz (貪食 (どんしょく) Spanish for "Ravenous"; Japanese for "Ravenousness"). Averian's Zanpakutō takes the form of a scythe.[11] It took the form of a red triple-bladed scythe, each blade growing progressively shorter, and sported a large length of cord attached to the bottom that could be used to enable attacks from range.[1] As identified by Hikari Raiotto, the cord was a potential weakness, which the latter attempted to exploit without success.[8]
- Partial Release: In rare instances, it is possible for an Arrancar to fight whilst only releasing a portion of their full Resurrección, transforming only parts of their body and weapons.[46] Muto was of the opinion that his own Bankai, Jitsugetsu Seishin, would be capable of defeating Averian when the latter's Zanpakutō was sealed. Rather than attempt it, however, Muto refrained, believing Averian's own Voraz would provide a comparable boost.[8] Muto's belief was proven true, as even a partial release of Voraz provided a marked improvement in his combat abilities, as a portion of his sealed away offensive abilities were opened.[47] Averian commonly transforms his Zanpakutō, in a usage not unlike a Shinigami accessing their Shikai. This alters his scythe into a double-bladed spear wreathed in writhing streams of dense black reiatsu, the energy extending down over what would be the handle, forming a guard.
- Partial Resurrección Special Ability: As shown by its partial release, some abilities granted by Voraz have been shown. Voraz is capable of two kinds of cut. The first are simple attacks, which can be enhanced via Ola Azul as they were before, only more powerful, as Averian has begun to tap some of his sealed away offensive abilities.[47] The second, meanwhile, directly applies Devourer of Souls, in a more powerful manner than before. The second type of cut weakens the bonds holding together spiritual beings and objects, producing a phenomenon not unlike the effect of a Seele Schneider. The loosened reishi is then forcibly absorbed through the spear.[48] This has the effect of weakening enemies struck multiple times.
- Enhanced Spiritual Abilities: The absorbed reishi stored within the spear doesn't directly empower Averian the way Devourer of Souls does, but acts as an extra reservoir with which he can enhance his various abilities. If the reishi in question had an elemental affinity, as is often the case with Kidō, Averian's own attacks would reflect this.
- Enhanced Spiritual Energy: Averian's reiatsu, whilst not completely transitioning into that of a Hollow as it would if he were to undergo a full release,[49] turns from its prior golden colouration to pitch black, accentuated with purple discharges, and undergoes slight enhancement. This is due to a partial release of his sealed offensive powers.[47]
- Resurrección: Not yet fully revealed. Once released, Averian's Zanpakutō, as seen in his partial release, takes on the form of a double-bladed spear wreathed in writhing streams of black reiatsu, the energy also surrounding the handle to form a guard of sorts.
Fracción[]
Although he is not an Espada, Averian has a number of loyal Hollows at his beck and call,[10] amongst them powerful and intelligent Adjuchas.[22] Whilst he can summon lesser Hollow and command them via his strong reiatsu,[5] these Hollow are quite different to those who dwelt in the depths of the Forest and followed Averian willingly, with those he summons during battle amounting to little more than cannon fodder.[8] The distinction is made by Averian himself, for he likened his loyal Hollow to the Fracción commonly seen amongst the Espada. The reigning Espada could hand-pick their subordinates, with some picking many and others choosing none.[50] Furthermore, except for one, who was killed by Akira, all of Averian's Fracción have been enhanced by way of Evolución.[3][13]
- Clarion -- a humanoid Adjucha with insectoid traits who loyally follows Averian as his Fracción. He holds seniority amongst Averian's followers,[3] and exercises a great degree of operational freedom.[13]
- Unnamed Adjucha -- an unnamed Adjucha fought with and was killed by Akira Hiroshi in early January 2019. This Hollow was particularly old, calling Averian by the title Baraggan had given him, which was "Teki". This Adjucha was the sole member of Averian's Fracción not to be enhanced through Evolución, as he died before Averian gained the technique.[22]
- Gorky -- an animalistic male Adjucha, who resides in the area surrounding the Negal Ruins of Hueco Mundo.[3]
- Nix -- a humanoid female Adjucha, who resides in the area surrounding the Negal Ruins of Hueco Mundo.[3]
Author's notes[]
Behind the scenes[]
- Averian was never intended to appear in the Fanon Canon. References to him were limited to Akira as a means of tying the work to the author's primary setting. With the FC effectively dead, however, Averian was brought forward to create a chaotic disturbance, effectively replacing The Coven as the main antagonistic force for Bleach: War for the King's Seal.
- Averian's use of Kidō is based on the use of Blue Magic in various entries in the Final Fantasy series. In Final Fantasy, Blue Mages learn their spells only after being hit by them in battle, rather than finding them as treasure or purchasing them in shops.
- The intent with Averian is for him to appear in a trilogy of community RPs, with individual stories between linking the events. The planned trilogy looks like this:
- Hunger and Greed: Predation -- complete. Documents Averian leaving the Forest of Menos and the chaos that ensues. He faces a coalition, some curious, others vengeful, and some just because he was an oddity. The RP concludes with the arrival of the Tres Pilares. The aftermath informs the direction of subsequent chapters.
- Soul Society invasion -- ongoing. Averian's invasion of Soul Society. Intended to shift the focus towards Soul Society, and create a chaotic event for Hotaru Hiroshi to exploit.
- Conclusion -- the concluding RP. At the moment, this will deal with Akira's attempt to spearhead Averian's ultimate defeat.
Trivia[]
- This was the first occurrence of Averian's Aspect of Death being named: Greed. Before, it had only ever been implied.
- Additionally, this was also the first cited instance of Averian's Hollow hole location. It being in his leg is a play on the old saying of someone having a "hollow leg". This means that someone is capable of consuming large quantities of food or drink, and is used to humorously suggest that someone has further capacity elsewhere in their body, akin to having a second stomach.
