Akira Tanaka (田中明, "Intelligent Dweller of the Rice Fields") is a Shinigami and the Captain of the Twelfth Division of Gotei 13. He used to serve under Captain Kaoru Shōki.
Appearance[]
An average-looking man of moderate height and unassuming physique, he has short, unkempt brown hair and green eyes.
As a Lieutenant he wore a standard Shinigami Shihakushō with a lab coat draped over it, with his Lieutenant's badge is placed at his right arm.
He currently wears a long-sleeved Captain's haori, reminescent of a lab coat, over his fairly standard Shinigami Shihakushō.
Personality[]
A responsible and diligent worker, Akira displays great loyalty and devotion to his Captain, Kaoru Shōki. Additionally, he is a very polite and friendly individual, his politeness extends to even to his opponents, apologising as he felled one such opponent[1].
He has a noticeable uncertainty in his abilities, which is especially shown after his promotion. He frequently deems himself unworthy of captaincy and immediately requests Kaoru Shōki to be reinstated as the 12th Division Captain upon her return.

Expert Swordsman: Despite not being cut for combat, Tanaka has been required to become highly proficient in Zanjutsu to attain the rank of a Captain. Hakuda Master: Rather surprisingly, Akira is an extremely adept unarmed combatant. However, this becomes apparent usually only after he releases his Zanpakutō[2]. Kidō Expert: Moreover, he is highly adept at using Kidō, capable of casting mid-level spells without incantation. Shunpo Expert: Similarly to his skill in swordsmanship, Tanaka has to be a competent user of Shunpo in order to be a Captain of Gotei 13[2]. | |

Idenshi Setsugō (遺伝子接合, "Gene Splicer"): When sealed, the Zanpakutō assumes the form of a tantō with an irregular tsuba and a bronze hilt. Tanaka usually carries it in the right sleeve of his uniform[1].
