The Eighth Division (八番隊, hachibantai), also known as Squad 8, is one of the thirteen divisions of the Gotei 13, headed by Captain Erika Fujibayashi. Her Lieutenant is Haruka Inori.

Organization

Much like the standard Gotei 13 Division, the Eighth Division is structured like a traditional unit. The reigning Captain is supported in his or her duty by a single Lieutenant. There are also the standard twenty Seated Officers.

Special Duties

Under Captain Erika, the 8th Division has become the rapid-response team of the Gotei 13. This is shown most strong in the organization Erika founded -- the Hayaiōtōtai, which is allowed to use lethal force against anyone seeking to attack the Soul Society. This particular duty was emphasized strongly during the initial Engelhaft Gewitter attack on Soul Society. The Falcon Brothers where capable of organizing the division effectively to mitigate the damage, going as far as to disrupt the attacks of the fearsome Sturm Kavallerist so that the others could focus on establishing a firm defensive foundation on which to build on.

Barracks

Eighth Division Barracks.

Like all the other barracks, the Eighth Division Barracks house the offices and living quarters of the Shinigami of the Eighth. During the Ryoka Invasion, Chad and Kyōraku fought on the barrack grounds. Chad damaged part of the barracks greatly during the fight, though the buildings where quickly repaired. Under Erika the barracks where expanded on and greatly revised. There are now various open spaces designed to double as places of training and contemplation. She also had a multitude of cherry blossom trees planted to "liven the place up a bit".
