The Third Division (三番隊, sanbantai), also known as Squad 3 in the English dub, is one of the thirteen divisions of the Gotei 13, headed by Kei Yume. His Lieutenant is Ui Kōmoto.

Organization

Much like the standard Gotei 13 Division, the Third Division is structured like a traditional unit. The reigning Captain is supported in his or her duty by a single Lieutenant. There are also the standard twenty Seated Officers.

Barracks

Third Division Barracks.

Like all the other barracks, the Third Division Barracks housed the offices and living quarters of the Shinigami of the Third. Due to the Third Division's colored history, a lot of modifications and changes had been made to the Barracks. This include numerous expansions and additional gates. The Third Division Barrack was widely accepted to be one of the largest Barracks amongst the Gotei Thirteen.

During his captaincy, Gin Ichimaru planted a grove of Persimmon trees in the barrack grounds and dried the fruits himself to create hoshigaki, which he shared with other divisions. Following his death, it was renamed Ichimaru Grove in his honour. Following his defection, the trees were continued to be maintained by Miria Fujibayashi, Lieutenant of the Sixth Division. She also picked and shared them, continuing the tradition even after Gin's death.

Following Rojuro Otoribashi's return to Captaincy, he expanded the Barracks to accommodate additional buildings and facilities. In fact, Rojuro modified one of the Buildings to act as a makeshift Concert Hall, available to use to all the Shinigami. The Hall was later called Rose's Hall.

Upon Kei Yume's ascension to Captaincy after Rojuro's retirement, he modified a number of buildings to suit his needs. This included a new Entertainment Facility filled with the Human World's latest technologies, which mainly consisted of various old and new Arcade Machines. Other modifications included an Exercise Room, a Swimming Pool, a Hot Spring, as well as a large Garden. In Kei's Personal Office, there was a hidden Portal that connected his room to the Yume Family Manor found in Hama Town.

Captain Ichimaru and Captain Hitsugaya also fought on the 3rd Division grounds during the Ryoka Invasion.
