"They both knew of only one force capable of toppling Averian now, but getting it to cooperate was another matter entirely."
—The musings of Kenji and Kusaka, relayed to Akira, describing the seven Kyūtai.[src]

The Ōin (王印, King's Seal), identified by Hotaru and Akira as one of the seven Kyūtai, is a treasure belonging to the Soul Society's Royal Family. Its acquisition is the primary goal of Hotaru and his Coven, with Akira and his Ryū Order standing in direct opposition to them.[1]

Overview[]

Few people even know of the Ōin's existence, never mind its proper function as something beyond a cherished heirloom. Even fewer are aware of the precise requirements required to actually wield it. Without access to Bankai, or something of equivalent strength, only a portion of the Ōin's power can be accessed.[2] As revealed by Kenji's twin sons, the Ōin is one of seven artefacts, referred to as "Kyūtai", that possess incredible power.[3] Their power, not to mention potential damage in the wrong hands, led Akira's father and his rival Van Satonaka to find and subsequently hide away the artefacts over a century-long crusade.[4]

Whilst the location of the other Kyūtai are unknown, the Ōin is in the keeping of the Royal Family and routinely moved, whilst Fushichō is in the keeping of the Shihōin clan. As is custom, the Ōin is never kept in one location for an extended duration, and is instead moved and hidden periodically every few decades by the Captains of the Gotei 13.[2] According to Hotaru, it is one of a select few artefacts with the power required to return Akira and he to their native world, and of those artefacts, it is the easiest obtained. In fact, the Ōin was used in this exact manner when Kentaro Shiba and Kaien Shiba travelled to Akira's original world from their own world.[5]

Powers[]

  • Dimensional Control: Should one actually manage to control the Ōin, it is capable of granting its wielder complete control over the dimension as they see fit. This extends to the manipulation of time, energy, space, and matter.[2] Garian Shinjo of an alternate world managed to use the Ōin to send Kentaro and Kaien to another alternate universe entirely, described by Kaien as "world jumping".[5]
